Tencent about to acquire Take Two Interactive (Rockstar and 2K)

Can someone remind me again how tencent became so rich?
Mobile domination in a country with 6-7 times the population of the US. They don't just make games. I believe Wechat, and all its companion services, might be their biggest earner. It's like Messenger on steroids, because it's basically a mini-commerce hub. Tencent banks hard.

Wechat is a great app, but no one I know uses it. It is used throughout SEA, but I've only used it when dating Chinese expats.

You do know Chinese businessmen get taken on a long, long vacation until they are reeducated if they say anything against the CCP, right? There's nothing sensationalist about kidnapping.
No I don't rem such things. Calling it as kidnapping is already sensationalism. I guess in China, you do the crime you do the time. No money hats will get you out of it 🤷‍♀️

If ever there was an opportunity for MS to deliver a KO blow to Sony this is it. Do it Phil! :messenger_sunglasses:
i think ms would have to pay $25bn for T2

on the other hand

Edit; or it might be standard agreement for any publisher that wants to sell their games on Xbox

Good, we need more Chinese propaganda.

When will Tencent buy NeoGAF? I would really appreciate it if they put a damper on the discussions here, this is getting out of control.

They should also open some reeducation camps through out the world.

I don't see this happening. Would be awful if it did. Tencent already has their hands in multiple cookie jars. They don't need to own the majority of video game developers and publishers. That'd be gross AF.

Pay no attention to the takes saying something like "Nothing of value would be lost." Ridiculous.

For those that maybe be a bit ......... to believe this.

I have to ask you a question, if Take-Two was up for potential sale, and was put out into the market looking for a buyer, why would you think Microsoft, EA, Activision, Sony, Google, or other major tech companies in gaming or exploring ways to enter the industry allow Tencent to outbid them?

We are talking about some of the biggest IP in gaming that under a competent company would be able to gain extraordinary return on investment, and wouldn't be bleeding cash like Take-Two current does, who continues to amaze me with how poorly it's operated.

Well, he was wrong, most of the time they don't come back at all, or they come back in such a state that you can't help bu wish for them they had died 😐.

Hope it's not true but you can't blame Tencent for doing what others fail to do when the opportunity presents itself.

Trump passed a law on it I believe (specifically targeting Tencent and others) so I don't think this will be an issue.

Edit: Did it actually pass or get shelved?

The rumor talks about a hostile takeover. TT is not in the market looking for a buyer

That's not how a hostile takeover works. They didn't have a for sale sign in the front yard.

Take 2 is owned by it's shareholders, it's "publicly traded." They don't own themselves.

They have a board of directors that represents their top shareholders, like all public companies. Those shareholders combined is typically > %50 of shares, so if a board all votes to sell, that's how a "public company" is usually "Sold" (really it's the controlling stake that is sold.)

A hostile takeover is when a company subverts that, and goes to other shareholders, or gets a minority of the board + other shareholders to sell. It takes a lot, because you have to contact a ton of different people as opposed to a small board.. but if you can get 1 big board member to sell + dozens of the people just below "board" who might still own a lot of stock, you can buy a company that way.

It's usually done by offering these people way over the normal price per share.

I don't like R* or 2K sports games, but I absolutely HATE the idea of Tencent owning them.

How about CDPR? Perfect timing too.. when down and out. Less expensive, less laws. Japan doesn't allow their giants to be bought. Poland on the other hand...

T2 is a pipedream imo.

Sure. Acquire cdpr too. But gamers hate that scummy company. I said I wanted a meltdown

CCP + CDPR would've been a much better combination. This would be very consumer friendly too.

Cdpr founders were born poor in communist Poland. Capitalism saved them and allowed them to create their company and be who they are today. They don't like socialism very much.
I'd say any American company is better. They seem to hate capitalism more and more each year.

I doubt it would be in full as they like to be minority owners a lot of things like Activision and epic. I don't see them being any different with take-two.

Why are they so fond of a monopolistic corporation then? Monopolies are as anti-capitalist as one can get.
