Twitch bans Adults Only games

Thomper

Member
I wonder how much thought went into this RoC update and its wording before it was published because before hastily put together update they kinda banned Europeans from streaming very popular games like Witcher 3 and GTA V, because PEGI has given them AO/18+ rating. Twitch just forgot that ESRB doesn't give global ratings for games and things like PEGI do exist?

Their service and their rules, but I can't but think that this RoC update will affect only Hatred. If even that considering how unenforced whole "cleavage rule" is.
The update is pretty clear, it's just PC Gamer misunderstanding the original text.
Update: we received clarification from Twitch regarding potential restrictions in Europe and Australia. Looks like bans will only apply to AO games in the US, as below:

"if the game is AO in the US, then it is not allowed. If the game is not AO in the US, but has a different rating abroad, like The Witcher 3, it is permitted."
So only the ESRB's rating matters. Which basically means only the tiniest amount of odd sex games is actually banned, and Witcher 3 and GTA V are fine.

People lie with their age anyway, so making it 18+ wouldn't do anything. In fact, they already have this option for the stream/chat and you can just click continue anyways. Actually, I saw people getting (IP) banned for admitting that they are under age in 18+ channels.

Adults Only games are verbotent, but borderline prostitution is still perfectly cool with Twitch:

gx9BYmc.png

When was this screenshot taken, because I'm pretty sure you won't find these things anymore? And if you do, they will get banned pretty fast. They changed their policy about clothing and content that could be sexual some months ago. There was a channel, where a guy was twerking and his stream got shut down in like 10 seconds. It was all over Twitch and Twitter and I'm glad I didn't have to see it.

That being said... I think Twitch should go a step further and ban all the donation alerts, goals and top donater stuff on stream. Ever since Stream-Tip got released (or whatever else the add ons for OBS and X-Split are called) it has gotten absurd. If you want to give them money do it, but having your whole screen covered with that bullshit is terrible.

Hatred doesn't have an ESRB rating.

Doesn't matter what's on their Steam page, since developrs can enter info there themselves, the ESRB website does not have the game at all.

Not sure what I think about this, if people want to stream AO games I think they should be able to do that. But I see why there might be a problem when minors are watching, I dont think its the right decision though

Its their service so its their rules. They don't want to have to worry about age gating twitch for a few games. They obviously see a liability and are getting rid of it. The internet is not lacking places for AO content.

Sounds fair. They needed a clear cut rule instead of just banning games as they came up.

This is where I'm at. San Andreas seems an oddity, but for actual adult games, they should be banned for sure.

Absolutely ridiculous. People should be able to stream any game they want.

No, because anyone can watch them. It's not appropriate in my view, just like it wouldn't, or shouldn't in reality, be acceptable on Youtube or any other non-age restricted site that can be viewed from any device.

so wait. if a game is AO in the US, but is only 18 rated in the UK (in the case of manhunt 2), is it still banned from being streamed? surely the rules should be region specific, no?

Here's the update from the PC Gamer article on that:
Update: we received clarification from Twitch regarding potential restrictions in Europe and Australia. Looks like bans will only apply to AO games in the US, as below:

"if the game is AO in the US, then it is not allowed. If the game is not AO in the US, but has a different rating abroad, like The Witcher 3, it is permitted."

Additionally, Twitch has clarified its position on specific titles, including GTA: San Andreas.

"If a game's US version is rated Adults Only by the ESRB, you should not broadcast that game on Twitch. However, ESRB rated Mature versions of Adults Only titles are permitted for streaming, such as Mature versions of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Fahrenheit: Indigo Prophecy."
http://www.pcgamer.com/twitch-bans-adults-only-games/

There's also a handful of non-porn games on the AO list including a game who's sole content advisory listing is "Gambling"

Shit makes no sense, man

Edit:
A site using censorship that thanks it's entire success/existence to the streamers. Just stupid.

It's filtering, actually.

It's not really censorship since it's the company exercising their right to deny content on THEIR servers.

This.

I am and Twitch said several times, that they won't ban people for cleavage. It has to be something more sexual, in order to get banned. Topless male streamers are also not allowed anymore, but I'm well aware that they don't ban everyone for it. Especially, if they are partnered.

No, because regions are easily circumvented.

This is probably mostly just a statement to please advertisers. Twitch bans all Adult Only games, realizing full well that there are few if any games actually affected by it. Advertisers just see the message, don't realizes it means very little, and are just pleased Twitch is doing stuff to prevent their ads being in front of improper wins.

Everyone wins, nobody loses, except if you're somehow a fan of Playboy The Mansion and always streaming that game.

Fair enough. Probably don't want to leave themselves open to the inevitable lawsuit when some bairn gets caught by their Mother watching a virtual and bloody gangland shootout.

The games are rated, and it leaves them wide open if they allow unfettered streaming.

By that logic they should directly ban "mass murder" games like GTA franchise that doesn't have AO rating in US, but are 18+ according PEGI in EU. This RoC update banned handful of sex games that I have never even heard of.

The update is pretty clear, it's just PC Gamer misunderstanding the original text.

So only the ESRB's rating matters. Which basically means only the tiniest amount of odd sex games is actually banned, and Witcher 3 and GTA V are fine.

From original Twitch RoC update, before added commentary;
Today, we’re updating the RoC with regard to Adult Only (AO) games. Simply put, AO games are not welcome on Twitch. Please refer to the ESRB’s Ratings Guide and list of Adults Only games for more information.

While the ESRB ratings apply exclusively to US titles, our policy extends to versions of these games in all territories. Generally, if the US version is rated for Adults Only (18+) or has an equivalent rating in your territory, you should not broadcast that game on Twitch.
http://blog.twitch.tv/2015/05/rules-of-conduct-update-adult-oriented-games/

It could have been misunderstanding and most likely was, but I think wording of that snippet should be more spelled out and clearer. Especially part I bolded is super awkwardly worded imo as it, at least to me, implies that if game is e.g. 18+ under PEGI I'm not allowed to stream it.

ESRB has rated GTA: San Andreas 4 times. 3 of them are M and 1 is AO, PC is under all 4 ratings. So what is rating for PC version and which is one Twitch looks at? "...such as Mature versions of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Fahrenheit: Indigo Prophecy." is said in their update, but what is mature version of GTA: SA? Latest patched version I assume, or?

Wait--what about this directors cut made this game AO?
The director's cut includes the content that was removed when localizing the game to the US.

The cut content is described here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fahrenheit_(2005_video_game)#Release
The title of Fahrenheit was changed to Indigo Prophecy in the United States and Canada. The change was made to avoid confusion with the film Fahrenheit 9/11, which was released around the same time.[13] Sony and Microsoft had policies that they will never allow AO games on consoles. To earn a M rating from the ESRB, most of the scenes depicting sex (one of which is interactive) and other adult content were removed from the North American versions. An exception is the final sex scene between Carla and Lucas, which was not completely cut from the game due to its important role in the story, but was shortened by removing the more graphic shots and most of the visible nudity. Though one shot of nudity remains, in the edited version the angle that should have revealed Carla's fully naked breasts, the nipples were removed from her model skin, giving the appearance that the nipples were merely obscured from view, and thus avoiding any identifiable depictions of frontal female nudity.[14]

I can't wait for Hatred to come out and be forgotten so it can stop being a rallying point for a bunch of assholes. I keep seeing buzz everywhere that Twitch did this just to stop people from steaming Hatred, which I seriously doubt.

Hatred doesn't have an ESRB rating.

Doesn't matter what's on their Steam page, since developrs can enter info there themselves, the ESRB website does not have the game at all.

It used to though. My guess is that they retracted the rating and went unrated so they could publish on Steam.

Does this change anything? I wasn't aware people ever streamed those games anyway.

Not really. In all likelihood this is to get in line with policies of the platforms they want to use. Console platform owners don't allow AO games on their systems so likely want this extended to streaming of games.

This is a dumb post. Twitch manually polices their streams. Just last week Grandgrant was banned for streaming topless and he's a guy. He was only discovered because he was mocking other streamers on his stream.

I pity the horny lonely men that donate so much money just to get their name recognized by some moderately attractive girl.

Can't blame the girls, though. Such easy money.

They already banned explicit sexual content, so the only real change here is no GTA SA (which is stupid, ban people for showing the explicit content that REQUIRES MODDING to even access) and no Manhunt 2. Crazy few games get AO and most of them are sexual in nature, and most games that know they'll get an AO just don't submit to ratings boards because there really is no point at all (the only places that absolutely require ESRB ratings also don't allow AO so it's a waste of your time)

Much more reasonable than when that temporarily banned Senran Kagura Estival Versus without even knowing what it is (they called it a visual novel).

Bad journalism, much like every site's report on Halo Online. The current version of SA isn't AO and the only AO MH2 is the PC version. You could stream the console versions.

Oh I know, just didn't think it was worth mentioning. But I and a LOT of people own the original PS2 version of SA and I can't imagine that many of us traded in our PS2 copies to get an M rated one. I doubt you can even tell just by looking at the game which one it is.

Surprise... Here comes the censoring. :(

How can Twitch censor a game? They are a private entity and decide what they service covers, that isn't censorship...

Also, you are aware AO games have always been barred from being on consoles, right?

Oh wow, that is hilariously sad if they don't have a rating, but know their 13 year old audience will lap that shit up.

That's what I don't get. The only way to know which version it is would be if they actually modded it and streamed Hot Coffee. So it's really dumb.

Mind you as much as I have tried to clarify SA and how I feel it's being addressed is stupid, I have no issue with twitch having a no AO policy. I don't consider private company's having policies to be censorship or wrong, same as free speech laws exsist to keep the government from censoring, blocking , or prosecuting free speech, not to force private companies to allow people to do whatever they want.

I've seen several other people being banned for this and somebody slipping through the system can happen. They don't exactly have admins on 24h watch, but if you see it and find it inappropiate, then report it and an admin will show up. I think things like that are just awful for a game focused platform and you might think about start streaming on sites dedicated to that.

I don't know why they allow partners a little more room for things like that, but it's probably money and that's really sad.

Twitch staff do not close down channels with reasonable sub counts because it makes them money, so this stuff still happens here and there.

Hell, twitch allow you to sit in front of a green screen and eat dinner before proposing to your loved one if you have subs, which is nothing to do with gaming or music at all.

And speaking of music only the other month they had a weekend of streaming some live concert with girls in bikinis bouncing everywhere and flashing tits, three or so admins were even in the chat user listing.

I'd rather bans be discussed on a game to game basis but I guess there are enough banned AO games already and they decided to go all the way with the ban.

There are still rules against oversexualized clothing on stream, but there's no draconian dress code saying girls can't have cleavage or anything (nor should there be, this isn't school.) Banning adults-only games for streaming isn't any worse than Microsoft or Sony not allowing AO games on their platforms at all and that is a well-accepted practice, so I'm not sure what the problem is here.
