Sakurai considers there to be 39 characters in Brawl, so he counts the Pokemon separate.

That settles that, then. Good to know.

I also find it weird at the idea of

Mario = 7 reps (up 3 from Brawl)
Pokemon = 5 reps (down 1 from Brawl)
Zelda = 5 reps
Fire Emblem = 4 reps (up 2 from Brawl)
Kid Icarus = 3 reps (up 2 from Brawl)

It just seems really lopsided, if any one franchise should have 6-7 reps it should be Pokemon over Mario.

Mario was down 1 rep in Brawl from Melee. Just think of it as Mario getting the one new comer it was due in Brawl and one for Smash 4. It doesn't sound that crazy.

Well, it's not odd when you consider that it's sakurai.

We know he's a huge fire emblem fan, and he made KI:U.

I think he really likes pokemon, too, so that's weird.

I get that he likes FE and revived KI:U with a lot of ideas for Smash in mind, I don't mind either of those franchises getting a bump like that, I just find it weird that he'd give the Mario franchise such a large amount of reps, they have almost enough characters to fill an entire row by themselves.

That would be an awful solution, imagine if you just wanted to do the basic FD and kept randomly getting a back ground and music set you didn't want? I'm pretty sure the idea of giving most stages a FD variant was so that the core smash people who don't like gimmick stages have more freedom to try different environments/music.

I dunno, people overlook how important the Mario franchise is to Nintendo. It really is the flagship franchise and it's not that big of a deal to me if it has the biggest representation.

Pokemon is a tricky one too because with the Pokeball items there's actually a ton of representation. I'd like to see them get more creative with the Pokemon choices by letting you actually play as Red or a Gym Leader or something, using Pokemon as B moves.

I'm not denying how huge Mario is for Nintendo, but Pokemon is just as big, and I find it weird that they'd only add 1 newcomer for Pokemon and not bring back Mewtwo, Ivysaur, Squirtle, or Pichu while they add 2 newcomers for Mario AND bring back Dr Mario. Yes I realize that odds are Dr Mario was an alt costume that got promoted due to time (if the leak is true) but it still just looks weird.

We're never getting a pokemon trainer that will fight and summon pokemon for specials, the whole point of PT in Brawl was that "he doesn't fight himself he uses his pokemon to battle while giving them commands from a distance"

You're right, it's at the bottom but it says "normal."

Look how detailed their render is. The reason the Ice Climbers aren't on the roster is because the "leaker" couldn't shade their fur coat properly. I guarantee it. The Duck Hunt Dog model isn't even that good, considering it has no fur or detail outside of decent shadows. People are justifying the lack of detail by claiming that the character is retro, yet if that were the case, why do the Ice Climbers look so detailed in comparison? Why would they cut the Ice Climbers after making such a big effort to bring them back in the first place? I remember when people were speculating that the Ice Climbers were going to get cut from Brawl because some bogus radio interview which claimed that Mr. Game & Watch, Young Link, and the Ice Climbers would be axed for Bowser Jr. and Ridley. Since then, the poor Ice Climbers haven't been able to catch a break. People took a Sakurai quote out of context and assumed that the Ice Climbers would get cut because the 3DS isn't powerful enough to handle their "complex" AI. Now they're supposedly going to be DLC to make up for the fact that they aren't in the finished product. But why aren't they in the finished product? Because of time constraints? Why would they prioritize R.O.B. and four clones over the Melee veteran? If not time constraints, then what? If complexity was an issue, what makes you think they will come back as DLC? Something is not adding up here.

Note how the size of the stage increases EVER so slightly when you hover over it, which explains the UI overlap from the leak.

Neither does Pikachu or any other Pokemon. It's a stylistic choice. Neither a point for the leak or against it.

Someone talented enough to make Shulk's hair look like hair would not have trouble making fur on an animal or coat.

If it's real, the Dog is a terrific fit. Just think of the Villager, and he's in. The possibilities are endless with a character like that. Summoning ducks, using the Zapper, jumping, tossing clay pigeons. So fowl.

They managed to get glossy reflections correct on the rim of Bowser Jr's vehicle.

Anyone who'd mess up on Ice Climber's fluff also wouldn't manage to get nice glossy textures in.

Here's the 3DS stage select on both screens.

I figured that "Normal" was the category for the stages, like you would have "Normal", "Past", and "Custom", like in Brawl, but it could be for normal/FD mode too. Or, maybe one of the stage categories IS FD mode stages.

Duck Hunt Dog is a really fun character and he's pretty iconic considering Duck Hunt was an NES pack-in.

It's hard because I've wanted him for sooooo long but I'm really disappointed with every other part of the leak. I believe it's fake for other reasons than that but it's so hard to see convincing evidence suggesting a character I've been wanting really badly as a Smash character up with some really disappointing news. I wouldn't want to believe it even if I did.

Never say never. They clearly decided in hindsight that using PT in that way was pretty lame, so they removed him for this one. Sakurai didn't think Villager would work, and he changed his mind on that.

Regardless, I didn't say it was likely, just that I wanted it.

I agree that the "ICs are cut!" meme is based on nothing other than a vague quote from Sakurai that got blown out of proportion, but I doubt the reason ICs aren't on the leaker's roster is because he couldn't shade them correctly. Given how poor the quality of those pictures are, he wouldn't have needed to shade them properly. He wouldn't even have needed to make a render for them at all; he could have just made a tile on the CSS for them like he did for Jigglypuff and a few others. (All this is assuming the leak is fake, of course.)

When you pick Greninja or another Pokemon, you are the trainer.

That's probably a consequence of the 3DS's screen size - it's too small to bother making the background all pretty when the stage tiles are just going to cover it up anyway. The Wii U's stage select screen is much fancier.

Are you still going on about this? Even if the leak is fake, the reason the ice climbers aren't on there is because it's based on a text leak that also said they aren't on there.

Pokemon Trainer with Pokemon as specials would be great, and they could let you change the summoned Pokemon with custom moves.

Other moves could involve using various items from the series.

I'm not saying this is proof of it being real or anything, but in my experience the most 'disappointing' or 'weird' roster leaks are always the true ones.

People would never have expected Brawl to drop Mewtwo, or to have Fox, Falco, and Wolf sharing the same Final Smash. When these things leaked people declared them immediately fake and went to great lengths to prove that they're fake. The same thing happened back in the day for Melee, with Doctor Mario in particular. They wanted one of the other, more optimistic, more ideal leaks to be true.

I think that's what we've run into here. Whether this leak is real or not, it's the "uncool" leak, the one that does unexpected things that people are getting upset about. The one that doesn't have Ridley and King K Rool and all that other stuff people have been hoping for. Instead it has the Duck Hunt Dog and Doctor Mario.

It's Melee/Brawl all over again. It's a cycle we're used to seeing by now. The disappointing leak is usually the true one.

But we still need proof.

He has a little bit of fur, but his entire body is covered in it and it's certainly not all rendered that way.

Pikachu and Sonic posted above are further examples.

Fur is a stylistic choice. Donkey and Diddy are always depicted as being hairy and fuzzy in their games (not as detailed as Smash but the fur fringe is always there). Duck Hunt Dog hasn't been seen since the NES days, a redesign for him might not include detailed fur. We just don't know.

Just looking at the potential leak and its DLC contents, is anyone else completely surprised that there are only five Pokémon characters? Brawl's roster was much smaller and technically had six playable Pokémon, and the Pokémon series has grown considerably since 2005/2006. There should be an equal amount of Pokémon or more of them, not fewer. Considering the presence of Mega Evolutions, Mewtwo is a really glaring omission.

Depending upon which set of rumors you believe, he very well could still be in the mix.
