Ehh, maybe it could work, but ScarJo just has that persistent college girl who chain smokes vibe about her. Way too short as well.

That's because you're not Asian. Why do the Simpsons look white to you?

The Simpsons are supposed to be white Americans I thought. Black characters are actually black on the show instead of yellow-skinned like the others and the yellow skin for white characters was supposedly chosen as a humorous attempt to get early viewers messing with their TVs color.

They should just rename this movie 'Cyborgs!' and set it in Hong Kong, whitewash 90% of the cast (except the bad guys), have Tetsuya Nomura or that guy who remade the Dinobots design the Fuchikomas and make the plot about cheese. That way when Scarlett Johansson is asked to explain something futuristic for twenty minutes at a time just like GitS is supposed to it won't feel like the worst part of the movie the same way it was during Lucy.

First of all, FYI I am Asian. Secondly, its the studio's money. If its your lotto money or a Japanese company want to do it with a Asian lead, they are more than welcomed to cast a Japaness actress.

If you don't want to face the fact that the international movie market is racist, yes I can tell you right now its racist. Asking a movie studio to invest ridiculous amount of movie to battle racism is unrealistic.

And lastly, why the fuck does Motoko need to be an Asian? Her whole body is artificial.

If we kept the discussion to "what's the safest move the studio can make, financially?" then we might as well settle in for a film industry that's doomed to become more boring and self-destructive than it already is.

That's not what we're discussing.

Is it confirmed? This reminds me of when the live action DBZ was cast and it got clarified that there wasn't an assigned race for the DBZ characters despite audience outrage over their interpretation of the characters as Asian.

EDIT: Isn't anime supposed to be a nondescript spin of European and Asian appearance, often considered to use features common of white people?

Having recently watched Under the Skin...I'm okay with this. She's a good fit for the physicality and she has experience in slightly inhuman roles.

They'll just rename her to Major Kensington or something.

Ehh, maybe it could work, but ScarJo just has that persistent college girl who chain smokes vibe about her. Way too short as well.

But, ignoring Arise and the fact that it's a cyborg body, the Major always had a body that looked like it could kick all the ass it did. Scarlett is tiny. It'll just be another "small woman inextricably kicking ass" as opposed to "big woman expectedly kicking ass"

Lucy has made more than $400 million worldwide so far, without her "needing help from a big enough male lead".

Luc Besson keep making these crap Hollywood wanttabe action movies with odd leads. From time to time he got lucky and hit the jackpot (maybe 1 in every 20 movie he produced).

The one thing that pissed me the most in Lucy is Korean gangsters in Taiwan. He didn't want to offend the Chinese market so he used Korean gangster instead of Taiwanese...in Taiwan.

The whole movie makes no sense, no sense.

...because she couldn't ever improve her accent? Because actors don't have to do that, like, all the time?

Rinko Kikuchi is an Academy Award nominated actress. I see no reason to doubt her ability to further Americanize her accent in a hypothetical reality where she was actually offered the part.

Hiroyuki Sanada has been at this much longer with more impressive work under his belt, and he still can't get rid of his accent. Unless she was able to develop the sounds at an early age, that would be an incredible feat to overcome.

Well, some people would rather discuss what can be done realistically to improve situation instead of going for movie equivalent of "I want world peace and I want it to happen today!"

Didn't he do a British accent in Sunshine, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if he was cast in a role in told to use his normal speaking accent in most movies like Wolverine or 47 Ronin.

I don't get how these are Asians:

Motoko Kusanagi in the middle is most certainly Asian.

The short answer is that when people draw people of other ethnicities, they over-emphasize the features that they consider "other" to them.

While you might draw an Asian person with explicitly narrower eyes, Asians don't particularly notice that aspect about themselves, so they don't emphasize it in particular.

But if they were to draw a Caucasian person, they'd put a giant high-bridged nose on them!

If you were drawing a Caucasian, would you feel a need to make a big prominant nose on them in order to say "this is a white person"? Likely not. I bet you didn't even notice that was a hallmark of Caucasian-ness.

An Asian person might look at the Simpsons and think "how could they be white if they didn't emphasize the nose?"

It did? Her body was tone but I wouldn't classify it as big.

He still had a heavy accent in Sunshine. British English is just the version of English he learned first.

Lots of actors even very talented ones struggle with accents and she's shown no ability that I've ever seen to lose the accent. If she can, she can but I'll believe it when I see it. I'm not sure if it's a language barrier or what but tbh I haven't seen an actor from that region lose the accent to any great degree ever even very established stars. That's not a knock on their abilities I mean you've got a great like Ken Wantanabe that can't really kick it.

She needs to prove it if she can do it because she's got zero chance down from very slim if she can't.

Well that's boring.

To that point they might as well just announce that they're casting Matthew McConaughey as Batou and Benedict Cumberbatch as Togusa while we all smoke crack and go to bed.

Well, I don't buy her kicking ass as Black Widow and I wouldn't here. It might work ok in the Avengers but for this movie I'd prefer to see someone more like Charlize in the absence of Margot who I thought looked like a good fit for the role.

I wouldn't classify it as big either but her hard body was definitely a hallmark of her movie portrayal. Unless scarjo does some Chris Evans training she doesn't look the part. Jessica Biel would be better or hell even the MMA chick from haywire. I liked haywire.

Considering this is an American adaptation recreating the franchise aiming at general American/western audiences,
1. Won't be set in Japan
2. Doubt it will even have a single Asian/Japanese actor in it

It will have one throwaway Asian actor as an "homage" to its roots. Just like Edge of Tomorrow had that one red shirt Japanese guy who had a total of 10 seconds screen time in end before dying.

I don't mind them adapting GiTS for the west and setting in it America with American character counterparts. That sits fine with me. Edge of Tomorrow was a great film. But people need to stop saying that the characters don't "look" Asian as if it's some valid excuse.

1. What does "looking Asian" even mean in regards to anime?
2. What does it matter what they look like when their name is clearly Japanese?

I don't know why people don't just watch the anime. The film is awesome as is. I don't need live action.

As a huge fan of GITS, this isn't for us.
Its Hollywood people seeing that this was hugely successful in its own medium(Manga/Anime) and seeing a potential there to remake it into something that people who
never give anime a second thought would enjoy.

could we the fans enjoy it, maybe.
could we hate it, probably.

Its not like her English is awful either. Unless I'm to believe she is incapable of practicing english, not seeing how she's not a viable option.

It's not horrible no but when you put someone who's relatively unknown with fairly heavily accented english vs a known bankable star with no language issues the choice becomes obvious. The problem is that is something that can be used to say no and, if you're not in the top position, it becomes a big problem.

You can't really give people an easy reason to say no if you're not already their first choice. l.

Well that's boring.

.
Unfortunatelly, but majority of tent pole movies usually are boring and made as safe by the numbers flicks. It will happen eventually, but it will have to gradual and start from the bottom. If you put an asian female lead into big tent pole movie and it flops, it will bassicaly set the whole movement for more diversity of this kind behind for many years because movie execs will just assume "well..of course it flopped, it had female asian lead"

Of course, the problem is that nowadays the mid level budget movies seem to be getting rarer and rarer and those were the best ground for experimentations and proving what could work.

I don't see what people are saying about the body size. She's mostly skinny when she isn't in uniform. Her shoulders do look wider when she's in her jacket but that's because it's drawn to have pads.

The body doesn't matter though because what makes her strong is the cybernetics in her body.

Only thing is that her body is mechanical, so she doesn't need to be big to use strength in the universe.

I dunno. I'm much more worried about the writing than the casting.

If even half of all those manga/anime movie adaptations will turn out to be as good as Edge of Tomorrow then I hope this trend continues. I sure as hell would love to see Keanu as Spike Spiegel and I would rather see Tom Cruise do Yukikaze than Top Gun 2.

Description of a scene in the GitS movie:
She was ripped when fighting the think tank at the end of the movie, I'd link a picture but she's fully naked and such.

In that scene she is fully extending her muscles past their peek. Super flexing.

That isn't how she normally looks.

What if Scarlett Johansson in the future (say 2066) took anti-age serum to become young again, and then went back in time to the present-day's past to like 1973 and using present-future technology she was able to become Arnold Schwarzenegger. But get this, she doesn't look like arnold Schwarzenegger in any way, or talk like him. Other than appearance, the timeline is kept perfectly intact. "Arnold" stars in the same movies, says the same lines, becomes governor, etc, except "Arnold" looks and talks exactly like Scarlett Johannson, because "Arnold" IS Scarlett Johannson. This means that despite Arnold being a ~30 year old cute petite woman, you still think of Arnold the exact same way you do now, as a huge strong bodybuilder 80's action hero.

Okay, so that's the scenario. But let's say someone tells you that Arnold is really Scarlett, and this snaps you out of it and you realize this is the truth. You realize that the human you thought was a huge powerful man for your entire life is suddenly an extremely sexy woman. But everyone else still sees her the exact same way that we see Arnold today. Assuming you are attracted to women, and that you're attracted to Scarlett Johannson right now, would you be attracted to ex-Arnold-Schwarzenegger Scarlett?
