DOOM Gameplay Demo (E3 2015)

Really don't like the weapon wheel, just slows down the pace, maybe the PC version don't need it? Shooting seems methodical? Not feeling it at all unfortunately, and I kinda liked Doom 3.

I think this game is too unnecessarily violent, there is something wrong with people who enjoy these types of games.

Honestly this game was like a 6/10 on the gore scale. There's so much of it and its so in your face and repetitive it just desensitizes you. It isn't disturbing in the least, the first time you do a takedown its like "huh" or "ew!" and then you do it again and the impact is gone.

This scene from Dead Space is probably more uncomfortable and disturbing than all of the gore in the entirety of Doom.

In the post conference interview they were talking about player movement/speed and said something along the lines of there being no point in giving the player a Ferrari but not giving them big open spaces to drive in.

I'm sure it's not going to be all corridors and small environments. We've probably only seen gameplay segments from the first half of the game at most.

They also said that the MP gameplay is going to be a mix of Quake and Doom which is music to my ears.

Any initial disappointments I may have had have been greatly reduced following that post conference interview.

Looks like mindless fun as usual. I think the violence could be turned up a bit. The atmosphere should be more haunting and dark too. It should make all the uptight moms and that anita lady as uncomfortable as possible.

The demon designs are really boring in general. Revenant looks like the Revenant I guess (though built up to be more threatening than usual, for some reason), and the Mancubus was recognizable from it's shape, but the rest look like generic enemies from Gears of War.

The shotguns don't have near enough recoil. They barely move when the guy shoots. That coupled with the fact that enemies barely seem to get fazed when they get hit by a shot that doesn't kill them (and even when they do get killed it'd be better if the parts were to fly further away - like in KF2 for example) makes the gunplay look pretty poor.

You guys sound like you expected them to actually recreate doom 1 and 2.

It seems like a real good in between to me. Most of these complaints regarding movement speed and gunplay can be attributed to the person demoing it.

First video looked good, although with a heavy Doom3-Feeling going on.
The sound for the Super Shotgun is just perfect, though. BOOM KLA-CHIK! Awesome.

I am now a little bit sad that I have to play the Beta on PC because I don't think my computer is good enough for it.
But we will see.
Gonna buy the full game on PS4, definitely.

It wasn't violent enough imo, I wanted to see an eyeball land on the gun barrel and slowly start to melt as the barrel gets hot. 40 foot geysers of blood coming out severed heads is just good wholesome fun

The problem is, we never saw the guy running fast anywhere.
There was that one scene in MP where things were fast but it could have been a modified gametype to emulate original Doom.
So it is possible the game is not as fast the original, even if the demo-guy was taking his time doing anything. Probable even, i'd say.

Did they even mention the beta stuff? Kind of annoyed -- thought they were gonna announce when it was happening and, well, what it actually is.

Guessing MP though.

I'm going to have to go against the grain here. I just watched some Doom 1 gameplay videos. And all I can say is that people who are not satisfied with the new Doom have severe case of rose tinted nostalgia goggles. Lots of small rooms and corridors. The speed looked about the same as what the new Doom is showcasing. And the guns look more interesting in the new Doom in my opinion.

I get the impression people are looking for a new Quake here instead of a new Doom. Because IMO, this new Doom is Doom head-to-toe.

The violence in Mortal Kombat X is much worse. I didn't find the violence here to be too much at all. Mortal Kombat X is unplayable for me.

As someone who has never been such a big fan of this franchise I think it looks great. I'm allways glad to see more fast arena style shooters on consoles (and more high budget games like this in general).

Those user created content tools looked great

This looks terrible... guy's mouse sensitivity is way too low for a twitch shooter. On top of that the weapon wheel and slow motion when selecting shit is totally out of place in a Doom game.

Oh wait, it's not a Doom game, it's consolized garbage parading itself with the Doom name. Nevermind, makes sense now.

13 minutes of a gameplay demo is more than enough to get the general gist of the pacing, level design style, and general speed of a game. That's not to say we've seen everything, but it's not like it's immune to critiques either.

If the demo is misrepresenting the the game that much, to the point where we still know very little about the game's pacing and level design, then it's just an extremely poor demo and not worth defending (and this almost never happens in E3 demos).

My hope here is that the game is being played "slowly" to show off the tech and detail. Zipping by levels as played by a speedrunner wouldn't let us appreciate the work put into the tech. If the game is truly this slow, though...eh...

If this game doesn't look, sound or feel like Doom to you, nothing else ever will. They nailed it. Looks awesome. The only thing questionable or lacking was the enemy variety, but it's just a demo for a game that has a lot of work left on it.

This is what Doom 3 should have been and that's great in itself.

However, I am deceived as I had some stupid hope about them having the balls to bring back the style of the original Doom/Doom2. Looks like it will remain a fantasy.

i played doom 2 up to 'the crusher' to refresh my memory and nah
the gauntlet is probably the closest to a 'corridor' map in the first 6 maps and even then it's really not

if this game isn't 60fps on consoles I don't see how it could play well with that current speed.

1080p/60 apperently.

Isn't it obvious?

Well gore is something weird to cheer for. Like all the people who instantly bought Hatred because it was "edgy" or whatnot.

Anyways, I hope they get rid of slowing time mechanic while switching weapons (i imagine it's optional since that doesn't work for multiplayer). Also, the finishers seem kind of overpowered in that they didn't seem to have any downside. Maybe the demo was just set on easy mode because the monsters didn't seem to react to shit.

The game looked much faster in the trailer. Maybe there's hope?

Maybe. I mean, it's still almost a year out. I played Brutal Doom for the first time last week, so I'm kind of judging everything I see here to a pretty high standard. I was confused at the number of folks praising the game in the stream thread for it's "fast pace". Looked slightly faster than some modern shooters, but slow as molasses compared to classic Doom. The player was able to dodge projectiles (and I'm glad to see few to no hitscan weapons), but mostly because the demons were terrible shots. And the chainsaw usage was a major slowdown. I hate the dick out of canned animation weapons.

I'm half and half. I'll definitely play it, and I'm sure I'll enjoy it, but this wasn't quite what I was suspecting after reading all those tweets from people who saw it at Quakecon.

Waiting for the gamersyde version now :)

Yeah don't count on that. So far Bethesda seems to be Youtube only (talking about embed codes in their E3 email a few minutes ago), which is a huge blow considering they have always released their videos in HQ until now :(

Agreed with the both of you. I remember playing Doom on Dos Shareware when it first came out. I was 15 at the time and played for years.

This definitely struck the nostalgia bug, and is actually making me run out to buy the Wolfenstein reboot as well (I know, LTTP).

I think people are either too young to remember or too clouded by modern shooters to make the connection of this simplicity that is Doom.

It's not perfect, and there is plenty of time for them to tweak it. It isn't coming out next week after all.
