Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
So while all people involved make for a combination of pure sex and I'm hyped as fuck, I still firmly believe Nier was lightning in a bottle and cannot be replicated in spirit due to it being what it is. Much love for Nier, from me at least, comes from how surprising and oddball it is within the framework of a seemingly traditional ARPG. It's very deceptive. And you can't really pull the same trick twice without losing some of that spark, even if what you end up with is outstanding.

So yeah. I want Nier 2 by Yoko Taro and co with Platinum Games. And I also don't want Nier 2. If that makes sense.

Not really sure what you mean by this. Yoko Taro's games have been like this since the first Drakengard, and by that I mean they are very odd games with a lot of ethereal and strange/odd elements that make them unlike pretty much any other game in terms of characters and story. Playing Drakengard 3 recently you can see the same thing there although it's not the exact same game as NieR obviously. No one should be expecting a copy of NieR, which they have essentially stated with it taking place in the same world but not being necessarily a sequel, similar to how Drakengard 3 is a prequel to Drakengard 1 but they are very different stories but are binded by Yoko Taro-isms if that makes any sense.

Its not about replicating anything. People expect Yoko Taro's brand that he brought to Drakengard 1 and Nier, that delightful balance of insanity and WTF versus somber depression.

As long as the game has that, i don't think anyone could fault the game for being whatever it ends up being. Drakengard was balls to the wall insane, Nier was a different kind of insanity but still just a poignant, and even Drakengard 3 in its own way achieved something similar, but none of them were replicating each other really.

I don't think the combat system in Nier 1 was bad at all. It was pretty satisfying IMO, but I think it would be very benefited for the P* colaboration

Can't wait to see what could they bring us.
And I really expect one incredible OST like in Nier 1

Yoko Taro is one of the best developers in the world. I really love how he designs and creates this insane/twisted story.

Watching the interview now, it's a real treat. That OK sign when discussing how they're writing a happy ending for this game... yyyyyyyeah, just fuck me up, Yoko & co.

But they're not twisted and insane, they're completely normal.

I 100% confident that NieR 2 is going to be nothing like the first game. Yoko Taro isnt the type of guy who does things mutliple times.

I'm really interested in this. I've never played Nier but I've played Drakengard 3. That game was janky as hell but the world was really interesting. With Platinum developing this game performance will not be an issue. I'd like to play Nier first but the only problem is Nier is really hard to find, its not even on the PSN store. So people who've played Nier, you think its perfectly fine watching an LP of it or do you absolutely recommend playing it myself?

If you dont play this game for yourself, it will lose most if not all of its impact, especially the ending.

Makes a lot of sense actually, and I agree. The simple fact that a lot more people will expect the game to be good before it's released changes a lot of things. It's a little bit like the next Mad Max movie. If they do the same game/movie, it won't have the same spark and will be considered inferior. If they do something different, they could easily lose what made the first one great.

I'm more than happy that they have the chance to make the game and prove they can do something fresh though.

I really hope they consider doing a remaster of the first game. I sold my 360 a couple of months ago and now I really regret it. :(

They could go in a completely different direction though? There's no reason to believe it will be as oddball or crazy as the first game.

It's really far too early to be thinking along these lines, but at the same time, I do get what you're saying.

As long as PlatinumGames is finding more and more work I'm okay with it.

:D

And also that makes me interested in a game I never had any interest in.

What was the female audience question that bugged some people?

They mentioned that many females liked Nier and because of that they were afraid of making the game too action heavy for some females or people who aren't great action games. They were worried it might deter them. Because of that they are aiming to create a battle system that is easy to pick up but provides a lot of depth so those with all skill levels will enjoy it.

I'm glad the Square Enix interviewer spoke up and said women will be fine and that he knows plenty of women who play action games who could kick his ass at them.

Might have been a bad translation. I caught that too, but I definitely don't think they meant that to come off the way it did.

That interview is interesting, as it essentially supports what I hoped the game would be, but now makes me concerned about whether Platinum is going to be tethered too much on the gameplay side.

I have a lot of faith in Inaba as a producer to get the right elements together, but at the same time, I don't think he's really done a mixed genre title, and the only RPG he's produced in cooperation with an outside studio was InfiniteSpace on DS :p

The impression I gathered from multiple interviews is that (some of) the younger Platinum staff at the very least knows Nier, with some of them being big fans of Nier, and then Inaba gave Tauro (is that his name? Sorry if I get this wrong) the opportunity to lead the Platinum side of development, with a team made of mostly younger people, because they are the ones who understand Nier and would do the IP justice.

It might not sound as good as having a big name behind it, but it's a very smart decision from Inaba, the man knows how to run the company.

It's a bit concerning that Taro was afraid it would become a character action game though, because what that says is basically that Platinum would do whatever the fuck they wanted with the game, and his director role is pretty much a glorified writer role, since he was concerned about the end product instead of how hard it would be to make it Nier.

Anyway, thankfully, as he stated, the team is passionate about Nier and definitely understands what makes it special, and they just plan on making a Platinum-quality Nier, instead of a trademark Platinum game in the Nier franchise.

The fact that not only they understand people enjoyed the variety, but are also already implementing said variety, and in different kinds of gameplay on top of that, makes me completely confident in the end product.

The only thing that could stop this train was if Taro didn't create something as interesting as Nier, which could happen, Nier is too brilliant to have something just as good as a given, but I have faith in the man.

I have confidence they'll get it right. One thing's for sure, it will be far superior to the "combat" in Nier 1.

Watched some of the interview (turned it off when it felt like spoiler territory) and Taro Yoko is such a joker lol, the complete opposite of someone I would expect to be behind Nier.

The translator guy could barely look at him without laughing. He did everything from funny gestures in that Emil head, to trying to drink through holes and picking his nose.

As for ppl worried about PG, don't be. This is exactly what the team needed, gameplay was always one of the weaker aspects of their games and they basically brought in the pros for that.

And an interesting tidbit from the interview, apparently a lot of the people that worked on Nier (and are also working on Nier 2?) are from the Dragon Quest team.

Has anyone asked Emi Evans already about the "they're worried you'll turn them down" thing?

As someone else said, this isn't the time to be humble, we need the entire gang!

I can only look at PG's records to see where their strengths, or lack of there of, lies.

Their only consistent weakness is in storytelling, which explicitly is being handled by the same brain that handled it in Nier 1. Also, you can do a lot more than only look at PG's track record, you could read the interviews like the post you quoted suggested.

I have some minor concern as well, but from the other side. Still I think we're looking at an interesting project here that crosses over two fanbases I expected to be fairly disparate before, which I think is reason to be excited more than bummed.

Watch the interview that was posted here in the last few pages or read the thread. They are very aware that this is an RPG and it's not like the team is Platinum now. Platinum is a small part of the development team.

Or just this:

Very much worth a watch, it is a great discussion. They also show parts of the dev team.

Quick and dirty summary:

- Game plays in the Nier universe but will not have any characters from the previous game.
- Game will probably have some type of genre mix again like in the first game, but they don't want to just copy it. Is very much an RPG and they are debating if they should include a text adventure element again
- Game will have a flashy battle system with depth to it, designed by Platinum Games. Will not be a hardcore action game to not turn off RPG fans.
- As the previous game has a lot of female fans, they want to make it accessible enough and not too difficult, so they can manage. (lol) Still want to offer enough challenge for hardcore fans though.
- Debating whether they should include difficulty settings
- Game might have similar surprises like the
save delete
feature in the first game
- No general tone or theme, Yoko Toro freeflows in creativity like in the first title.
- Main character was designed to have dark colors.
- Kinda spoilerish concerning ending(s):
Yoko considers a happy end this time, but the producer wonders how this should be possible when reading the script (lol)
- Might include some remixed music from the first game

I get where you're coming from, and I think I agree.

Both in gameplay and story really. I think the story part is obvious, but the first time I got into a text adventure segment in Nier, or when the camera switched to fixed RE-mode or Isometric RPG mode was also pretty special.

Still hyped as fuck though.
