Fallout Shelter |OT| Revolutionizing safety for an uncertain future

I coulda sworn that when they announced it they said that when you send people off to explore they can find lunchboxes. Am I imagining things and if not, has anyone actually gotten a lunchbox that way?

Honestly, I can't believe I got sucked into this game. It's very obvious your typical money grab game with all the trappings that Southpark pointed out in their F2P episode. Sure, there isn't a "timer" but good luck getting anything more than crappy stuff without a lunchbox which they make painfully rare to happen (and definitely not getting any legendary NPCs or weapons without them... and even better, you still aren't gaurenteed to get one with them. I've had a few lunchboxes now and only gotten Abraham Washington).

Also, there really isn't anything to the game. It's click on the screen, here satisfying noises, click some more. Get rewarded sometime. It's very obviously working on the same psychology gambling does (all those beeps they do when you spin or win anything are there for a reason). Same thing with any of these money grab mobile games.

And yet I fell for the trap. I refuse to buy lunchboxes though. The game to me is trying to earn those lunchboxes and collect all the legendary vault members (I really want Colonel Augustus damnit. I wonder if Boone is one <- maybe not since he was in the Obsidian game). That's a good question, anyone got a character from New Vegas (or the original Fallouts)?

I now want a full version of this. Fallout: Sims is such a brilliant idea, I'm surprised this is the first we've seen of the concept. If they took this and made an actual game out of it...well, that'd be nifty.

Hell, somebody could make a Wasteland: Settlements and it'd be pretty awesome. Imagine all of the building and resource management without the lengthy waits and mobile shenanigans.

I thought this was kinda what the whole build your own town in Fallout 4 was pretty much (kinda a sim town light within Fallout).

Well, I just ran into a very annoying bug. I had two goals that involved me getting lunchboxes. One was to get 2000 food. The other was to merge two pairs of rooms.

Well, I was about 1600 or so into the food one and 3 merged rooms into the other one. And it reset both of them entirely!!! (but it didn't reset my progress so I already spent money merging those rooms *grumble*). And that took me almost all day to get that food!

Well, I suppose it's not a Bethesda game without bugs (or long loading screens. Kinda annoying if you are trying to run two vaults). Ooh, and my first crash!

After reading this thread, I finally see how rare it was to get Colonel Autumn in my second lunchbox.

And jesus, it's addictive. I thought I would play it for a couple of minutes only to still be glued to the screen days later.

Seem to be getting raided every 5-10 minutes I'm fairly well armed so not much of a problem, but getting a bit repetitive for me now.

Still a great free game though.

The game was fun for a few hours. But the last two days have been absolutely empty.

I've got ~50 folks. I constantly have 90%-100% of all resources. When one of the 'bad' things happens (roaches, fire, raiders) my guys deal with the shit easily without my intervention. There's nothing for me to do, except for birthing/getting more dwellers. But why? To what end?

Men who wander to my vault from the wasteland are in for a treat. They put on some Nightwear and get put in a room with several fertile women. Gotta get that genetic diversity somehow.

I'm at the point in the game where I have more dwellers than I have funds to build things to occupy them, so I'm sending out 4 high level guys with high Luck out on 10+ hour adventures to bring in the funds. I think that's what the end game is about- cycling dwellers to go outside to bring back caps and stuff to sell.

Just started playing this and unlocked the radio station. Pretty fun game, but I wish there was more stuff to do

My record is 10 hours. Going to max his endurance out and send him on a couple of days expedition soon

Just played it again and my entire vault seems to suffer of some sort of damage. Everybody has this red part in their life bars and I don't know why.

That's radiation poisoning, lowering their maximum health. Is your water production running in the red?

Yeah there is a bit of a lull before you get like 30+ dwellers. Of course if this game is ever too easy for someone, there is a difficulty setting: how many babies you make per day. That sets the challenge as you make room and resources and train and arm them.

They did a great job of monetizing the game. The lunch boxes don't really matter. I've found weapons in the wilderness that do nearly 20 damage, more than I've ever needed. And I don't have a need to 'win' highly skilled dwellers. The fact that you also can earn lunchboxes via accomplishments is perfect, so you can be apart of the non-essential loot grab without having to pay.

Edit:
That Fatman is insane! Just had a roach attack, gave it to one of my dwellers to defend himself. 1 shot all over, will monitor radiation levels now ;)

It's really unfair that the game requires you to stay on top of it lest your vault goes to shit immediately:/

The more I read this the more It feels weird, mine doesn't behave like that, when I exit the app the games seems to pause so no incident can happen while everything else is still going, did you guys perhaps turned off notifications?
In case turn them on, because I have mines on and it just notifies about the first room that is ready to be harvested and when other major things happen (baby born/growth, explorer returns)

I only wish there was a pause button, so if I'm playing and something comes up, I can set my phone down for a second without worrying about raiders or radroaches and without having to exit the app completely.

Alternatively, the ability to minimize the app into the multitasking menu so I could come back to it without launching it all over again would be ideal.

Nope, I've got notifications on.

Yea a pause would be great.

It also be great to get an alert if your person in the wasteland is in danger so you could call them back in time.

I found a pseudo work around to all the crashing (or at least have it open a bit longer).

If you zoom ALL the way out (where it's like a picture, as opposed to animated), it's seeming to stop it crashing as often.

I've never had this roach or raider problem when I'm away. I think it's because I'm on an Air so whenever I switch apps usually I find the game has to be restarted when I come back to it so there's no chance of sneaky stuff going on.

I find it hilarious that every single woman in my shelter is pregnant, yet I can stick them right back into the power plant, no sweat...

Edit: After reading the thread I see this is not just me. ;)

Are there any stable decent alternatives to Fallout Shelter? Loving the gameplay but it crashes far too much for me.

So do I actually have to be in the app for the radio room to work? I'll have like an hour long cool down and then nothing shows up when I open it later. Do I have to be on time or something?

God, yes.
And while we're on the topic of feature requests:
  • I'd like to be able to see the total number for the applicable SPECIAL attribute in each room. E.g. if I have 6 people with 3 Strength in one nuclear reactor, then it should have an '18' by the circled S.
  • I'd also like the ability to easily disarm all my dwellers so I can redistribute weapons/outfits, and sort weapons by damage in the inventory. Similarly, if I am swapping a Dweller with higher SPECIAL, it should only consider the base SPECIAL without outfit effects and they should automatically swap clothes as well as positions.
  • It would be nice to be able to pan around my vault without accidentally dragging dwellers to other other rooms.
  • Make a list of all idle adult dwellers so I can more easily assign them to rooms without mistakenly dragging the wrong dweller
  • Lastly, cloud saves so I can manage the same vault on my iPad while at home, or iPhone while I'm on the go.

There, I feel better just listing my gripes.

So do I actually have to be in the app for the radio room to work? I'll have like an hour long cool down and then nothing shows up when I open it later. Do I have to be on time or something?
No, but there is a chance that when the timer ends, the attempt will fail, in which case the timer will just reset when you re-open the app.

It started giving me anxiety that a room full of pregnant women could have a fire or radroach infestation and they would all just run from the room and the incident will spread, so I've been trying to keep them separated.

Yeah same. It kinda feels like I'm gaming the system this way, because I just go in to collect my resources then back out. I haven't had a raider attack or anything like that in quite some time.

Only problem I have is three pregnant women who seem to be pregnant forever. One of them had really good stats too, so I can't send her out to the Wasteland anymore. :(

Had to play this on partners iPhone (hurry up with the Android!!!)

Its great. Got Eulogy Jones as my first rate card and then a plasma rifle. Ready to rock.

Has anybody here hit the 200 mark for population yet? I was just reading the bethesda forum and there are some hardcore vaults there with 50 explorers going at a time. Madness! I guess it's the fastest way to get Caps in the end game though.

Played it for a couple days now.

Fun free distraction but it's too much of a time sink for such shallow game play.

I'll probably mess with it some more tonight and than hang it up.

It's quite clear that it's a simple game that wants me to buy lunch boxes for instant gratification.

That thing is a beast. I have one of my elite dwellers out in the wasteland with that and he bring me major loot.

I also have gauss rifle in the vault to protect against raiders. They get bodied in a matter of seconds, lol.

Sucks that you can't destroy connected rooms even though they don't look like they are connected. I'll have to plan ahead a bit more. Only just started so just getting to grips with things. Decent distraction, will see how it goes. Haven't played a mobile game in years.

I been experimenting with send expeditions:

Here is my longest one...it still ongoing...so i assume he will be out for 64 hours in total.

I also run a tight ship with segregated communities for various workers...furthermore i give out uniform to only those who are on duty...so they don't get confused with non-workers.

Wow Varvor you've far surpassed my OCD. Now all my rooms seem messy. Will be interested to see how much loot your 2 days guy brings back.

Here's my vault at present:

8Bvzgqjh.jpg

I'm a bit worried because I now have every training room and enough supplies to comfortably level everyone. I'm not sure what more to do. Im going to replace the low power rooms with reactors, the diners with gardens when I get them etc then I guess I'm just left with sending dwellers out into the wasteland. I want to make a max special dweller and send him out with a fat boy for a week or something. See if he comes back with anything cool :)

I've built an endurance room and I'm drilling every dweller through it. Fed up of roaches destroying my guys health.

Gees I really suck at this game, never have any currency and it seems impossible to get my workers happy.

I'm giving them all the right jobs, what more can I do?

this is my experience so far.

I like how it's set up but there aren't enough hazards and it's pretty easy. I haven't had even 1 dweller die. I sort of like the sedate pace but it makes me wish there was more to do for power administration, and I wish the explorer logs were a bit more robust. also the drag mechanic is flaky. I preferred FTL's simple tap target, and return to posts method more.

I am kind of in a same place as you...

This games struggle comes in form of micromanagemnt of the vault....problem is for people like you and me who broke it down to science....so there is not much left to do.

For example this morning I woke up and pretty much un equipped every outfit on all my followers so that i can get a good look on stats and which room they belonged. After moving them i only gave gear to people who worked...so this way even if they are taken out to mate they will not be acidentaly placed in to wrong work room and risk reduction of efficiency.

For all intensive purposes i beat the game...because there is only liniar growth to 100 dwellers up to max of 200. There is no more challange in micromanagemnt.

Only thing that is left is to play catch them all pokemon like for rare dwellers and weapons/outfit, rendering thr game kind of shallow :(.

My shelter was looking great - almost 100% happiness

Then I went to work for 8 hours and everything turned to shit. I mow can't keep all the parameters up, everyone had radiation poisoning and overall happiness us less than 15% :( People keep dying because I can't keep my water supply up!

New tactic:

Don't give out your best weapons. Keep them in storage. Then in the event of a super roach attack distribute these out. When I think about it it's pointless dwellers having weapons on them that they're not using.

Must say that I am not finding this "game" much fun.
Looks very pretty but there is no real gameplay. Personally I have more fun with Candy Crush Soda and similar games that people here usually despise.

Will erase the game and never look back, looking forward to Fallout 4 instead.

Just had a raid attack that killed half my dwellers. Yeah, I'm done with this game. Way too unforgiving

Played this for a couple of days before I got bored. So I made up a goal, which I think is the point. My vault's purpose would be the creation of super soldiers. 100% of all the effort goes into training the dwellers' children to max out their SPECIAL stats. Since eugenics was out of the question, all the production facilities are there just to feed the training rooms.

A day passes before I got bored again so I resorted to time hacking. :(
But yesterday I got the culmination of about 3 weeks of time hacks. A LVL1 super soldier.
Sent her out to explore immediately with a minigun and Tesla armor. She survived for 24 hours, with 25 stimpacks and 10 radaways. Got about 3k caps, and a lot of loot. Nothing exciting about the loot though just a lot rustys and normal clothes.

I'm no longer time hacking but I've got 7 super soldiers to go. I wonder how long thats gonna take. lol

I'm worried about longevity to. I'd like to send someone out for a week. Maybe then you get some epic loot. Maybe that's the point? Right??? Either that or some update like a robot building room to send robots out to resource collect or something

Yup this. I always keep a stash ready to be equipped. A few others might have a few 4-6 damage rifles in case I left the game to run and did'nt look.

Any idea what stat can help to extinguish fires faster? They seem to have a certain RNG on how long the fire will be.

A quick PSA:
If you have pregnant dwellers, don't delete any of your residential blocks till they all given birth. You might bug the game out and result in permanently pregnant female dwellers.

People assigned to the Diner have like the best "job" in the world. All they do is sit there and drink Nuka Cola.

I built my three-size diner right after the vault entrance so they're my first line of defense against a Raider attack, it's just so silly to see six people in full battle armor sitting there lurking cokes.

I'm really enjoying the game though, it's very rewarding and extremely lenient with its countdown times. Sometimes it's a bit hard to get a grasp on the consumption of the power/food/water, I had 28 dwellers and everything was dandy, now I have 30 and suddenly I have shortages of everything.

The timed Apple exclusives (paid or not) are infuriating, and an old bane of the mobile realm, where Android users are the majority these days. Too bad, as I would have been interested in trying this, but I guess the favoring of Apple platforms still isn't a thing of the past.

now that I have over 100 residents and all the buildings there doesn't seem much point in playing anymore. Grinding for lunch boxes isn't so fun, and exploring rarely turns up anything useful even after days

it was fun, but sorely lacks depth
