Fighting Games Weekly | June 22-28 | Ryu's in Smash 4, Jigglypuff's in SF5

Side note but I wonder how Skullgirls would handle character selection for a sequel. They've put so much time/money/effort into these assets and I can't imagine they'd drop anyone, and probably be hesitant to change stuff for the sake of keeping characters fresh too.
No one is being dropped. This was supposed be modern day MvC2. Also, L0G got all the data in they could ever want and then some.

There's going to be swag especially with V Trigger activations.

But there won't be Evil Ryu 15 second combo in the corner with a bunch of FADCs and crazy links.

Thas what I'm sayin.. there's no better feeling than somebody whiffing a DP in your face then giving them the

oh well tho, new game, new rules

My post had to do with MvC2's giant roster, not some perceived quality that only a handful of people left in this genre can accurately dissect and understand, Dictator.

But I guess SG and a sacred cow being in the same post will always lead to those sorts of replies, eh?

V-trigger is still in this weird early X-Factor phase: people forget they have it; player-1 activates, causing player-2 to activate in response; there's only a handful of gimmicky things figured out right now (Nash side switch; Ryu fully charged hadouken); people forgetting that it resets each round, so they don't use it till they're almost dead.

I'll trade "swag" (lol), for no fadcs, no invincible backdashes, no ultras every day of the week.
Yeah, there's pretty much little to nothing I can see myself missing in SFIV moving onto SFV. Outside of the early projectile game looking like ass.. things could not possibly be looking better.

Probably my favourite thing for new players and in general is the focus on short strings and target combos. Inevitably longer stuff will be discovered through V-Trigger cancels and some characters will be more combo-focused, but I think it's nice and healthy for SF to have that as a baseline.

I think this is mostly par for course.

The quality is about as clear cut as SG's inability to replicate it.

Skullgirls was supposed to be a modern MvC2, not sure where that disagreement comes from. They play very similarly, too, outside of the combos and current lack of tridashes.

Nash's combos looked really cool.

Idk, tbh I'm just not really feeling SFV for many different reasons.
List those reasons. It's more important to talk about what we don't like than what we do like. I've talked about what I don't like, even though folks here aren't very receptive to that, it seems.

Swag in SF5 is going to be taking off 60%, 70% plus one one combo.

Swag is going to be coming back from the bring of death with a dizzy TOD combo, like the ST days.

SF5 might be the game were "Swag" is actually "Useful".

It's just early day stuff, most activations like this will be considered a waste of resources later.

They were also completely ignoring alpha counters for the most part.

A cool thing Combofiend did with Ryu was when Mike tried to jump over him for a cross up. While his Cammy was jumping over, Combo activated V-trigger to do a DP from the other side into a super cancel. Ryu had more than enough time to visually confirm to do this.

SF "swag" to me is the stuff you see in 3rd Strike. I don't find a lot of SF4 combos too interesting unless it Dudley or something.

This is a particularly strong way of thinking for some people on GAF. I never get these sorts of one image responses everywhere else I go and especially not if I were to compare SG to Guilty Gear, VSav or CvS.

The Capcom nostalgia is blinding. I think VSav is just so old that it's beyond the average fighting game player's scope, so it doesn't get put on a pedestal as much. SF2 and MvC2 are untouchable, though. CvS also has it's SNK fans who aren't entirely against the idea of another fighting game improving on something.

I don't disagree at all.

SFxT combos are pretty boring IMNSHO.

Yes.

What do you not like about it? o_O
Yeah, SFxT combos were a snooze.

Concerns about SFV I've mentioned so far:
1) I think the game needs a two-button dash.
2) I don't like that V-Trigger automatically augments your specials to V-Specials at the cost of meter - let me control that.
3) I'm concerned that there's no real replacement for Focus Attacks, even if I didn't like Focus Attacks in SFIV.

I don't like the clay looking design for the characters
I don't like no chip kills
I don't like how slow/clunky the game looks, especially with the normals
I don't like what they did with Birdie's design and Cammy's face
I don't like the awkward piss-stained colour of ex-moves
I don't like the metallic type font their using for the trailers and character select screen
I don't like that it plays most like 3s
I don't like that it doesn't seem that combo extensive (it is day -300 tho)
I don't like the sound effects on the hits
I don't like how awkward the grabs are with the quick get up

I'll probably have more things to dislike the more I see the game tbh

SF4 is really the only combo intensive SF. Outside of stuff like CCs, there aren't super long combos in any SF outside of SF4.

The game looks faster than SFIV tbh. And based on what Combo said, I wouldnt be surprised if they make it even faster in subsequent builds.

Why does SF need a two button dash?

And V-trigger replaces focus attacks

It's actually fun to hear people of 4 complain about 5. The cycle of grumpy players from previous games continue.

I can't wait to hear "SF5 is so scrubby, I didn't need a buffer to help me complete links"

Curious if there will be a zoning game like SF4. Everything is so up close. Sim would get mauled if he was in SF5 at his current state. They could make him ST/MvC2 Sim though....
Everyone has an answer for fireballs though.

SFIV isn't clunky at all tho. SFV lookin like the MK of Street fighter right now

Eh...lol.

Coming from 3s, CvS2, Alpha series, ST, yeah, it's hella clunky.

Seriously just starting the cycle over of people disliking the next game in a series because the previous one is better/feels better/is more familier, etc.

That's piss stained if you drink tons of water. SF5's piss stained are, like, dehydrated piss stains.

Karst, what about focus attacks needs a replacement.
I presume in the way that Focus Attacks were designed to supplant parries, perhaps he's expecting another universal mechanic of the sort?

I don't think it's necessary TBH. Outlined it in the SFV E3 in more depthy why, but I really don't think Focus Attack mindgames were really a net positive for the neutral either.

Yeah ima have to roll with Rhapsody on this one.

I missed most of E3. What should I be excited about?

Saw the Cammy/Birdie reveals, meh.
Birdie.

I mean shit, we have people arguing "the color of EX moves looks better on SF4 than SF5", kinda hard for me to not disagree with you.

In general: The Last Guardian, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Shenmue 3, Nier 2. Horizon etc.

Fighters: Capcom did a three day streaming event for SFV with various tournaments, lots of footage of the game out there (Daigo, Justin, Tokido, Fuudo etc. all attended).

We looking at the same game bruh? You want chip kills bruh? What am I reading bruh?

BRUHHHHHH

I cannot wait for sf4 to die. Slow ass game.

I am happy that people are enjoying the game so far though, keeps the scene alive and thriving tbh, even if I think the game might be cheeks.

SFV looking like MK meaning clunky and awkward.

No chip kills is weird, your comeback factor can just be having Dieminion like blocking

Like it's different shades of yellow, it's still yellow shit covering your body while you do special moves.

This post out of context would sound disgusting as fuck.

So many tracks. Though I guess an old favorite is Captain America's theme in marvel VS Capcom. I get so pumped when he switches in, read to disperse Final Justice.

I wish I was there for some game transitions, mostly the switch between versus series games.

I wonder why Vampire never really took off in the US. Game was so much fun, probably my fav old capcom fighter.

I missed most of E3. What should I be excited about?

Mario Maker and Horizon. And I guess Star Fox and Nier 2, maybe even Transformers Devastation.

For the record, the EX move color looks a hundred times better in SFV than SFIV. Anything but the flashing yellow is preferable. It looks so out of place despite being clearly a throwback to older SFs. One thing that I always thought was off about the transition to 3D.
