MAD MAX |OT| Beyond Thunderpoon

I'm hooked too. I went from Fantasy Life, of all things, to this. That carrot on a stick gameplay hooks me hopelessly, no matter how trivial the reward is :p

And the open world in this game is so damn beautiful, so pretty, you can see so far away. Lighting is incredible, skyboxes blow my mind, dynamic time of day is also super cool and random storms just get me excited each time.

I think this game has astounding art direction and is really, really full of eyecandy everywhere. Just makes me beleive I'm actually there with Max.

It's really stunning. The parch area in particular.

I even get excited remembering the places I visited during my time playing this game. Seeing Gas Town from the beginning, all the way at the other side of the map is awesome, then when I got there and was able to go into the bowels and the underbelly, awww man, so cool.

Bases and camps although repetitive are super cool in design and pretty intricate. I enjoy exploring most of them from top to bottom. This world just got me hyper invested and excited and it's the main thing that keeps me coming back for more, other than the upgrades.

That's just a stroke of genius on the world/map design. You can always see the flame and smoke coming out of the chimneys from afar, everything looks a bit hazy and you wonder what is going on exactly over there. And with every new area you visit, you get a step closer to Gas Town and its skyline become clearer. I have yet to reach Gas Town, but I cannot wait to see what's inside the city. (Furiosa didn't even get to go inside Gas Town, she only saw it through her binoculars! But I'm sure she has been there before, ha.)

PS. Now I can sort of see the comparison to Enslaved (posted on the last page). Like the original source material Journey to the West, you spend the entire game/journey, enduring all sorts of hardships, to get to your destination (Vulture Peak in Journey to the West = Plains of Silence in Mad Max?).

At the point where I need to upgrade the car again. I need to kill some guy called Rim Jobbie to get paint, where is he?

Also, I need to upgrade my exhaust but it's 3 on from my current one, I don't need to get each one in sequence do I?

I rented Mad Max over the weekend not expecting much and was completely blown away. The driving feels so good, the car combat is fun, hand-to-hand combat is addicting, scavenging for scrap so I can upgrade my car keeps me going... and Chumbucket... what more can I say? Going to buy it tonight!

I actually bought this along with the Mad Max Anthology on blu-ray. I always wanted to watch them but never had a chance so what better time then now. I started playing the game first and was enjoying it so much I wanted to get some more info on the backstory/lore. On Saturday I watched all 4 films in a row. Fury Road and The Road Warrior are my favorites.

My only gripe with the game is the lack of
bikes
. Unless I'm not far enough in? Other than that it's amazing. Really loving it. They really nailed the atmosphere of the wasteland.

I just return my rent of 1 week of this game. It's pretty good overall, just missing the survival element are really not there which i find a little sad. And the fact that we got no penalty to die in the game, it's make everything a little too easy for my taste. Not able to remove HUD prompt during fighting make everything even more easier for Hand to Hand combat.

I purchased Metal Gear and Mad Max, while I think Metal Gear Solid is very good, I can't tear myself away from Mad Max.

I'm having so much fun, normally in open world games I tend to stay away from doing too many side missions, as I end up getting bored very quickly.

But with Mad Max I find myself bordering on obsessive trying to 100% every scavange location, camps etc

I don't know what it is, but everything just feels so good, the driving, the fighting etc, and collecting scrap is so addictive.

This is honestly the most fun I've had on the PS4 so far.

Only negative for me is the long loading times when you die.

Game is fantastic. About 10 hours in aND easily one of my top 5 open world games, and I've played them all. The atmosphere is stunning, no idea why reviewers were bashing it for being boring.

I'm increasingly moving away from reviewers + reviews for anything.

I haven't played Mad Max yet, but it sounds like another Dying Light. Brilliant game with insane scope for fun, which reviewers arbitrarily found mediocre. Maybe because they were forced to play through it quickly.

As I've said earlier in this thread, this is exactly me with this game. I completely put down MGSV and Until dawn for this gem.

Exactly like DL. Side quests have a purpose and traversal is just plain fun.

I normally am bored with open world games.

Brilliant.

Thanks for the input. Will pick this up later this year. Dying Light is possibly by GotY, even with MGSV and The Witcher 3 under my belt.

Rim Jobbie is a Top Dog (I think) around Gutgash's section. You might want to be a double hard MF before you go in there.

Also, I'm not sure about these upgrades. I got excited when I lowered Gutgash to two as I thought I can directly buy a humungous V6, but it turns out you need the other V6 first, but for the ram bars, you don't need one without the other.

I keep scavenging for scrap, but it's never enough, I need MOAR!!!

Anyway, I love this game. It's quickly becoming my fave game of this generation. I really wish it had reviewed better, but in all honesty, I don't really put a great deal of trust in reviews any more, I mean if you're paid to play games, do you think you would really enjoy them?

Jim Sterling clearly plays too many games and the love is lost on him.

I really pity how bitter he is (I thought this when he was on Destructoid, but now it's worse than ever).

Keep fighting the good fight Max!

I bought the game last night and planned on playing for only an hour. 2 1/2 hours later I had to force myself to stop because it was 1:30am. I loved Fury Road, and this game is channeling the best parts of that movie experience...plus some of the earlier MM movies.

I can harpoon dudes out of their vehicles and send them flying through the air...or I can drag them behind my vehicle and then send them flying through the air. Worth it.

Got to play a handful of hrs yesterday after only being able to play about an hr on release day. It's fun. I really like all the progression and upgrades you can get to max and the magnum opus.

So far i really enjoy the lil camps that you can take over where you need to blow up the oil pumps, etc. It has a nice puzzley element to it in terms of how/where to enter and navigating it once you're inside to pick the camp dry for 100% completion.

The combat, for as visceral as it is, doesn't feel smooth to me. People chastise Arkham combat for having Batman skate/glide from enemy to enemy but it helps get you into a rhythmic pattern that i feel like i can't seem to easily get into here. I feel like i'm mashing an lot whereas with Batman i'd rhythmically hit square when i needed to which played into the combat (critical strikes) that i don't think plays in here unless im missing something

I wish there were some sensitivity sliders for the sticks. It's nothing i can't handle as it is now but it feels a bit too fast for me. Makes things feel swimmy.

I'm still early in the game (just got the sniper rifle) and i'm wondering if there's a more efficient way to destroy cars other than wasting bullets to shoot the fuel tank or just ramming them over and over. I find myself using the harpoon to pull drivers out and then ramming their lifeless car over and over to get scrap from the explosion. I haven't bothered dealing with convoys just yet for this very reason.

Glad to see the positive reception especially with it going up against MGSV but im curious. For the people that enjoy this game but don't typically care for the Ubisoft open world formula, why is this game different?

Has anyone with a 970 downsampled to get rid of aliasing? I forced 8x MSAA through the Nvidia control panel but I still have a lot of shimmering aliasing, especially on the car and stuff.

This is the one thing that doesn't work for me so far. Max feels so heavy and the car feels the same. You move the stick from standing still and it takes Witcher levels of time before he takes a step. The car, though I know it can be upgraded, feels really odd at this point. It seems like it doesn't want to turn, so you hold the stick in the direction, and then the car oversteers so much that you rip the stick back to correct. That beginning section where you're
Racing through the tunnels with flaming traps
, I smashed my car 3 times because it controlled like shit. Idk what's going on. This game seems like my type of game, completely, but the controls are making it tough. I wonder if it'd feel better with the PS4 pad.

I'm running it at 1440p downsampled to 1080p, looks great!

Wow, what a fantastic game! I was leary about picking this up around the same time as Metal Gear, but I'm so glad I did.

Mad Max is one of the few sandbox games I've played, that captures the essence of its in-game world entirely. It feels like I'm in Max's world, and to me, that's lightning in a bottle that very few developers seem to be able to catch.

The sandstorms, the glorious random car combat encounters, the photo mode, the convoys, the art design of the wastelanders and the game's overall environment are just some of Mad Max's features that make it superb.

I would highly recommend this game.

After putting in a respectable chunk of time into this game, yeah, without question I think reviewers got it wrong with this game. This is a massive GOTY candidate for me. This game is so addicting and so goddamn fun.

I cant wait to buy this game, I am hooked on Gears and Madden right now or else I would have bought it, not enough time in the day for 3 games, can barely find time for these.

Ill grab it when its on sale for $30 - $40. Loved the movie and ive had my eye on the game for months.

I think I put in about a dozen hours over the weekend and while I am enjoying it, I am finding where it falls flat in some places. The melee combat is a lot of fun after getting some new moves (Sleeping Dogs style), though I find it annoying when I can't counter multiple attackers as quickly as I would like and have died a handful of times from being swarmed.

*The need to see a cutscene every time I eat food, get water, etc is really irritating
*I wish there was a means to eliminate the Warcrier more stealthily - I try to make a beeline for his winch because it's more satisfying to drop him on a group of guys, but it's near impossible against the fast enemies.
*I do like that I can see what is at every known scrap location, so I can skip the ones with no relic or parts as 11 scrap is just not worth it when I can get a Scrapulence or Muthaloot boxes.
*Not sure why I would do the projects at any stronghold past the first one since I can just fast travel back to it and fill up? I guess survey/cleanup/scrap crew could be a bit useful.
*It seems like a pain to actually find the minefields initially unless you are intentionally driving all over - am I missing something?

I really love that this is game where really stands that promise "if you see it you can go there". We heard that many times before but it was never true for real. Even outside map area there are interesting things that you can see and go there.

P.S. Obligatory Mad Max screens :D

?

I snipe him from a distance when I can, yeah you can if you can see him
I sniped the snipers and the tanks etc from a distance then I go through the front door with chum as far I can drive in for the places I can drive into
easy peasy.
when I cannot then I get the guys to chase me into another area so they do not get buffed
and fight them that way.

For the war crier either snipe him from a distance before entering the camp where possible or just make a beeline for his winch and shoot it with the shotgun. Yes that works.

You need to be frugal with heavy strikes until Max is raged, then you can go crazy and power slam dudes all over the place.

I love clotheslining people off of balconies.

you can also just shoot the warcrier with the shotgun. if the winch location isn't obvious. Though I sometimes let them get buffed. It's fun to fight against harder enemies

You answered yourself in the first paragraph: progression. While in most Ubisoft style open world's you are doing busy work that ultimately serve no practical purpose, everything in Mad Max gives you something useful in return. You are always unlocking a valuable upgrade and always looking for the next one just around the corner. The progression is rewarding and satisfying. It's a little bit like Black Flag, one of the best Ubisoft games in this style. In other AC games the stuff you collect and unlock isn't really that useful or exciting.

Also, it fits the game world. Scavenging is pretty much what you would expect Max to do anyway, so it doesn't hurt the narrative or the tone of the game.

You'll enjoy it! Just don't worry about the controls feeling unresponsive at first; you'll get used to Max, combat feels great and the Magnum Opus feels much better than the 1st shit car you drive in the game (especially when you upgrade it).

Quick question: that stronghold upgrade where folks collect the scrap from cars in the wasteland - do you have to DESTROY them, or can you harpoon the driver out, leave the car unmanned and get the scrap?

After a few upgrades to Jeet's stronghold, this game feels SO much better. Not having to worry about sniper or shotgun ammo as much means you can be more liberal with where to use each. I've taken to 1st person car combat since the shotgun kills are so satisfying.

Thanks for recommending this game. It would have slipped past my radar without this thread.
I do need some help though. I just got the harpoon and they want me to take my first base down. I'm getting crushed. The sniper sees me and sets the alarm. The only weapon I have is the shotgun but it's empty.

You should be able to use the harpoon to pull down the sniper

Mad Max or MGS5? I can only really play one right now, and I don't think I'll get to the other until after the fall games rush (so, 2016 realistically).

Keep in mind that I've only played MGS3 (and didn't finish it) and Ground Zeroes, and found both decent. I'm not overall a fan of stealth games, but I enjoy them every once in a while. I also like car combat and open world games (just finishing up The Witcher 3 currently).

To those who have played both, which would you recommend?

I played mad max for 2 hours last night and it appears to be a good solid game. Combat is fun and graphics are pretty decent. I chose it over msg v because I just can't take crawling and stealth games they bore me to death

Well I guess the argument here is how much you aren't a fan of stealth games and if you're willing to play one now. Because Mad Max is like not a stealth game whatsoever and a great time sink. MGSV has the bigger production values I guess but it seems to be dividing a small group of people who are highly disappointed with its execution. From what I've seen Mad Max players seem to have a higher percentage of enjoying the title, but we are a smaller group.
