I love that in a world where humans can become monsters by adding car parts to themselves, eating too much crab, and not removing a spider that crawls into their ear, people think "working out too much" isn't a good enough superhero origin story

Saitama is a gag character and so could only be defeated by other gag characters.
What makes Saitama a gag character, though? His powers are fairly defined and limited; he's just unusually strong/fast/resilient to the point of invincibility. It isn't like he pulls ACME gear out of a hat to defeat his opponents for comedic effect. I can take his power set more seriously than that of Franklin Richard's, at any rate.

Damn. I didn't know he did Marvel covers. Those Secret Wars Spideys are great.

Me either. My respect for his skill continues to grow.

his powers aren't defined and limited at all , he got Popeye strength.

Just watched all 5 episode of this and holy shit is it amazing. Never read the Manga, but heard good things about it, and this show blows my mind. The Animation is probably the best I have witnessed since Dennou Coli and the story, not only Original (with a lot of influence from Hero-in-the-making storie mind), but also well told, well directed and funny to boot. I knew Madhouse was gonna deliver, since I have been a huge fan of their works as of late since the bankruptcy, but this is just another level.

Word of god says his most powerful punch is akin to the big bang. And if you read the webcomic
he does make use of new techniques since his raw approach wasn't as effective vs garou. Table flip.

I get what you're saying how we know he's got a clearly defined power set with speed/reflex/durability/strength. But we definitely haven't seen the limits of any of those powers. And ya don't need to have Toonforce to be a joke/gag character (see Squirrel Girl)

His powers are absolutely defined. He's extremely resilient and has ludicrous physical strength.

As far as a limit, we just haven't seen it yet. In-universe, it's absolutely assumed, but it's likely so incredibly high that we'll never actually see it. It's not the same as a cartoon character whose limits and abilities change to fit the situation.

Sure, but
that new technique wasn't an asspull in any way. It was something he was always capable of but never put into practice.

I've been reading/watching Fist of the North Star & One Punch Man back-to-back, and I'm really curious to know who would win in a one on one fight: Kenshiro, or Saitama?
FotNS isn't really considered in the upper echelon of power levels in manga despite how cool everything looks. I mean sure, Kenshiro punches super fast with super high precision, but so does someone like Seiya, who punches even faster with more power.

Most people put spoiler bars over things, but a name without any context means nothing. Spoiler culture is getting out of hand.

I'm gonna be really sad if the show doesn't get to adapt all of the manga. I want to see this and Shokugeki no Souma completed so bad.

It will adapt up to the latest finished arc in the manga lol. Can't really ask any more than that. The arc that starts after the anime will most likely finish isn't even halfway yet.

There's 2 different versions of the manga (the original webcomic and Murata's), the webcomic is much further than Murata's, plus Murata's diverging from the webcomic and the anime is diverging from both of them.

The anime is clearly based on the Murata version though. I mean, they could go into ONE territory with Murata helping with character designs and stuff, but that isn't likely.

Well the adaption isn't even finished so that's not happening. Although with all the filler/additional content ONE/Murata are throwing into the manga, I'm starting to think a S2 of the anime might be possible. I certainly hope so.

As far as manga talk goes, I think part of the problem is how drastically different threads on GAF handle cross media talk. You wouldn't see anyone in the Flash thread incensed at the mere mention of characters name, for instance. "Killer Frost?! This is the TV thread!! D:" But I do agree it's easier to just steer clear of in-depth manga talk in general. OPM is awesome and the anime is awesome and everyone should get a chance to enjoy it to the fullest.

The OP is fairly spoilerish itself, speaking of which. That bothered me when this thread was made.

Really? A lot of the characters in that manga, even some of the minor ones, are freakishly strong (and huge). I thought the series would be up there with some of the heavy weights, especially in terms of freakishly powerful heroes/villains?

At the very least, Kenshiro isn't like the dozens of super powered idiots that Saitama deals with on a daily basis, so I can't see why he isn't capable of putting up a fight.

I don't really like power level wanking but aside from Hokuto Shinken being nonsense bullshit that can counter everything when it comes to other shonen even besides Dragon Ball like JoJo or Medaka Box are just broken tier

The guys in Seiya can move at several times the speed of light, so no, FoTNS is pretty pedestrian in power level.

I haven't read or watched Fist of the North Star, but from what i've seen in character battle threads (I get bored), doesn't Kenshiro have an ability that basically lets him do anything

Hokuto Shinken just does whatever it wants. That only goes so far when a character in Jojo just has "i win lol"

Same with Medaka Box

Two characters in the same Jojo arc have an 'I win button'. One exits the story and the other doesn't show up in the next part. Not even Saitama could overcome the latter's 'I win button'.

I really never understood why people classify this series as a parody. What's being parodied? Are all superhero comedies automatically parodies?

It's a parody in its execution of tropes in a manner that mimics other works. Just either subtle or overt references to things that are all too familiar in shonen and then turning them on themselves for a gag. Like having a main character do an internal monologue in the middle of a fight. That trope has connotations, such as, "things just got real", "this is a serious moment, he's losing", so it plays with those expectations, but only because other works have overused them and the viewer/reader pics up that meaning from previous experiences with the medium.

The whole Shounen genre is being parodied. Right down to the baldness of the main character... pretty much every Shounen series ever made has the main character with some funky hair do. And in many cases the main character gets longer hair when they get stronger... Saitama just gets bald.

Most other shounen series have a big origin story or coming of age story... OPM says nope to that and makes a lame as origin story for the main character. Hell even when they were telling us about Genos' back story that's a jab to the over exposition in other shounen series.

However the main point of parody is the relative strength of Saitama. Every Shounen series ever made strives on making the main character go through tough hurdles and even defeats to get to a high enough power level. OPM is like what would happen if Raditz landed on earth when Goku had attained Super Saiyan 3 already. In every other series the main character happens to be just barely strong enough to beat the villains... in OPM it's the complete opposite, he beats them in one punch from the get go.

Oh and training episodes. OPM makes fun of bull shit training power ups in Shounen series.

The comedic nature of the show and how he acts/defeats enemies.

The entire character of Genos reads like one massive play on a cliche, really. The tragic pretty boy cyborg with the five hour long origin story, hot ass hair, and giant rocket/incinerator hands acrobatically jetpacking through the air after his emotional outbursts, is the comic relief that gets beaten into scraps.

It's fucking hilarious.
