The Game Awards 2015 Thread: Keighley's Last Supper

I'm surprised to learn that Downwell actually came out and Tomb Raider GO beat it for best mobile game considering how amazing Downwell looked. I'll definitely play both but I still don't know who won best shooter. I want to know if Nintendo took that award too.

In case anyone's wondering, here's the list of winners.

Nice to see Splatoon winning Best Shooter.

Boom.

Thanks. They haven't updated the main website for that category.

I'm not good at reading drunkenness, I just wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt, but you very well could be right. If so, who the hell gives alcohol to presenters before they have to go up, even Kiefer who is known to get ridiculously intoxicited was on point.
Kiefer comes off as a functioning alcoholic.

No one outside the industry would take it seriously enough as a performer (even, and maybe even especially, comedic performers). No one inside the industry is an A-level host.

Honestly I'd say Kumail Nanjiani would be good for it but I can already see the racist tweets lighting up at the though.

I feel like Neil Patrick Harris could host this shindig. He's a good host in general.

Needs more Conan.

Do we really want another go around of the Joel McHale brand of 'comedy' where 'you nerds in your basement haven't seen a real girl' making fun of the audience who are actually watching the show? Because that's what it'd be, for 2 hours.

I like Conan generally in short bursts where he plays the dumb guy but man that schtick would get old fast.

There are a ton of people who show up intoxicated for award shows. Most people just get good at faking being sober.

Bingo. You need someone with hosting abilities that actually likes and cares about games. That is Geoff.

I was just thinking about this and even though Geoff wasn't very good, they kind of can't get a good host for one of these things. NPH or any other celebrity would just play up the 'look at these nerds but look I'm cool' shit.

Maybe someone from within the industry would be better. Troy Baker is my choice. Maybe even Greg Miller.

Troy Baker would be good, I think Greg would eventually make it all just really weird, like he does with everything, would probably be really enjoyable though.

I can imagine awards shows are essentially big nights out and people do tend to get the party on before even getting to the party.

Troy Baker as host is kind of brilliant. I could see him pulling it off with class

Troy was incredibly classy. He'd be great.

Jade Raymond gave the award for best performance, gave a "you're not my real Snake" burn to Kiefer, and fucked up the name of the game the award winner was from (it was the girl for Her Story and she said Witcher 3)

Viva said she was surprised she won and looked genuinely shocked. Usually at events like this, the winners are notified beforehand. It read to me like they changed the award at the last minute to Her Story.
Which is a travesty since Viva was a terrible actress in that.

You can't get a non-industry entertainer to do this. I just don't see them nailing the right level of sincere appreciation that an awards show needs, among other things. You need presence and composure, yes, but you also need from the heart passion.

I'll just repeat the nomination for Day9 here. Look at the E3 PC conference. Even with the competing demands of little blockbuster material spread compared to traditional press conferences spread across a few hours, the need to shill a bit, the need to show genuine appreciation for dev work, and the need to not let the event feel too posh or stiff, he pulls it off. Perfect guy for the job.

Conan cares about games. The whole "Clueless Gamer" series is just a bit. He wouldn't act like that if he actually hosted the awards.

Conan would break the bank.

His agent wouldn't have him doing a budget award show for pennies.

Again, a lot of the criticism on this show is not understanding the budgetary constraints involved, such as people complaining about advertising.

It's a miracle these award shows are still going.

Conan would be amazing. He would knock it out of the park. The small segment he had tonight was great.

I love Conan and love his Clueless Gamer bits, but as the other guy said, it would be him making nerd jokes the entire time and childishly oogling any women that pass by. When he says in his gaming advert segments that he doesn't play games and he doesn't even like them, I tend to think he's actually telling the truth there. Even though it can be funny, I'm not sure that's the direction you want to take the show in where you want to make it more sophisticated and respected.

Fuck, I completely forgot this was going on tonight. General consensus seems to be that it was good, and I liked last year so I'll have to tune in once youtube's all sorted out for it.

Yeah, I love conan, but I can't imagine it turning out much better than Joel McHale

The Hayter bit was uncalled for, and I've got the distinct impression for a moment that she fumbled the award and gave it to the wrong game and they just decided to roll with it.

Basically. Which is more of the vibe I think this thing should strike. Hard as he tries, Geoff is never going to have a Sony/MS/Ninty E3 presentation like lineup to show- and that's not even the goal. The goal is to share an appreciation for the medium and the devs that put in the hard work this year- something I think Day9 pulled off quite well at the E3 PC conference/talk show/whatever.

So don't go for the blockbuster approach. Don't get the massive stadium and crowds. Go intimate. Give the awards show to us directly and lighten the commercial demands so you aren't as beholden to shilling as you are in this year and every other year's scenario.

I think Colbert or Stewart would be a far better hosts for an event like this than Conan. Both are guys that have proven themselves to be pretty genuine when it comes to this kind of stuff and would probably be hilarious. But it would probably be difficult to land either.

I also loved how they didn't at all cover the rpgs in best rpgs and just off-handedly mentioned Witcher 3 won it when it also won GOTY. That feels like a huge snob at all the other best rpg nominees. They covered the noms for the other best ___ games but not best rpg.

It's wandering into theory but I honestly get the impression none of them played/wanted to show footage of Undertale since it looks NOTHING like all the other rpgs on the list. They shafted Undertale pre-show with a like 2 second mention and went on and on about Her Story with a description that would actually have been more apt for Undertale. >_>

Conan cares about games. The whole "Clueless Gamer" series is just a bit. He wouldn't act like that if he actually hosted the awards.

What's his angle, deep cuts about video games? No. His schtick is the old man who doesn't get video games, he can't break that for a whole night and I doubt he has it in him. Even the sign off on his YouTube clips are 'I'll let you get back to your pirated movies and Japanese pornography.' or some such. He uses the 'Me' and 'Them' style of humour when it comes to these things. I think it's a bit naive to think he cares about games with Clueless Gamer, it's a sideshow, it gets clicks on the internet, that's it.

Anyway yeah, my vote goes to Troy Baker. He's in the biz, get's video games and the culture and he's a funny, handsome guy. Win-win. Pair him with Laura Bailey or Jennifer Hale if you want and you're golden.

Kind of hard for Keighley to look passionate when he's glancing down at a prompter (or the floor?) every 15 seconds.

They need a charismatic comedian to host. Doesn't have to be a big name celebrity, but someone fun and loose, that won't fall back on "Haha gamers are nerdy" humor.

After today... i love both.

And I disagree with you on Viva. She was quite good in it. But, that's just opinions...

I bet Aisha Tyler could do a solid job.

I know people are pretty cold on her Ubisoft gigs, but I blame that on the shitty writing more than anything else.

She seems genuinely enthusiastic about games and doesn't really have that patronizing attitude towards the medium.

She also seems to genuinely delight at Yves Guillemont showing up every damn time.

EDIT: Great hosts think alike.

Wait, why can't we get Aisha Tyler to host it? She's great!

She's funny, she's sassy, and she's done hosting duties before!

Edit: ZOOZILLA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
