Star Wars Episode VIII Production Thread (Principal Photography Complete)

TAJ

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
Did anyone ever notice that there seems to be a castle-looking structure in the background of the rain vision?

I asked about that thing but I called it something like "that thing that looks sorta like an enormous moisture vaporator".

too early to say for sure but I think it's possible

Perhaps, but honestly I'm very much thinking this could be the best one, if not my favorite (for me those aren't synonymous). There's so much potential for the story right now - it's pretty much anything goes, everyone behind the scenes is gushing over Rian's story, and Rian's such an interesting pick in general, I very much have faith this could do what Empire did and come in with something on a who other level.

It was better to mention it than let everyone see it. Pretty sure JC assumed this was the spoiler thread.

A PM is the best route. By mentioning it you do let everyone see it. Saw this happen a ton in the non spoiler EP7 thread and was personally spoiled this way. Confirmation is as bad as posting the spoiler itself, IMO.

Did we ever get confirmation on what this structure is?

I didn't type it out in the production thread. Jesus. I was hoping he'd remove it before anyone else saw it.

Relax. Was just trying to share an experience I had in order to keep people from being spoiled in the future. A poster right after you thought he had been spoiled:

Is that really a spoiler? It's not just joking speculation?

..so I wanted to share my two cents so it doesn't happen to someone else.

Pretty sure something newsworthy is coming today, trailer? name?, behind the scenes? , image? comic? something , unless it was the videogame confirmation by e.a?

There's going to be a reveal today . Keep your eyes peeled for the announcement ! #MayThe4thBeWithYou #StarWarsDay @starwars

From the other day

@Starwarsuk
Only two days to go until #StarWarsDay! This will be a day long remembered...

From the other day

The way they're beefing up an announcement, surely they'll have more than "this team is developing an unannounced 3rd person action/adaventure game in the SW universe but we don't have any details yet".

I'm expecting something substantial.

Not really sure what to expect, but the title probably is the most likely candidate if they were to make some sort of announcement (I'm still expecting nothing). IIRC The Force Awakens wasn't decided on until filming was nearly over.

Odd not to do it early in the morning, though.

If it was gonna happen, it would have happened already. May the 4th is a fan holiday. Lucasfilm helps promote it, nods and smiles at it, but doesn't really use it to that kind of extent.

Jabba Flow was likely the extent of it so far as Lucasfilm is concerned.

Ah, I forgot that came out. Yeah, that was probably it.

There's not much they'd be willing to talk about at the moment anyway. We only recently had the Rogue One teaser and they're not going to show much more of VIII this early.

When should we expect an episode VIII trailer or title announcement to be made public? I have to assume that merchandising houses must have access to storyboard and concept designs by now.

We'll probably not get it until principal photography wraps, same as they did with The Force Awakens - a simple tweet.

Yeah, it will be interesting to see how much info we actually get while R1 is approaching and through to release on video. Wonder if they'll hold back all significant details until the dust settles. But then again they already showed us new footage/behind the scenes with the announcement video and that was VERY early on. They could have simply tweeted "started filming today!" but they went the route of a full on YT video.

Title when filming wraps, teaser in December. That's how it happened with VII. If Episode VIII were coming out next summer as originally planned we would probably have gotten a teaser pretty shortly.

I'd be willing to bet we don't get real footage until R1 is on video.

Ehhh... Rogue One won't be on video until like next April and we'll surely get an VIII teaser before then, unless they change things up.

Which I guess is possible. But we got the VII teaser exactly one year away from release.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
Yeah the movie took a hard dive for me as soon as Rey and Finn get captured by Solo.

This for me. Never felt the movie recovered, and if anything I spent more time trying to quash or justify all the insane leaps in logic to the end swimming in my head as the old kept mixing with the new in kind if absurd ways.

Still a fun movie, but yea...

Right but keep in mind that all focus was on VII since there were no other projects releasing before it (they wanted to poke people with a stick and say "look at this brand new SW film!" WAY in advance because they had the luxury of it being the first SW project in a line of many. They have no reason to not keep all eyes on R1 until the hype is gone.

This is how I felt.. until I saw the film more than once. Lots starts to sink in on repeat viewings. I did a 180 on how I felt about the film as a whole.

I swear this thread already touched on this at one point (pretty sure it was this thread where we started talking about marketing campaigns and such) but it really does seem like, in the interest of protecting against consumer confusion and preventing overlap, you're not gonna get any press pushes, ads, trailers, or commercials for a Star Wars movie unless it's the one opening most recently.

April teaser, October trailer. commercials sprinkled inbetween. Star Wars Celebration and Force Friday being the two big spikes on the way to the release.

Yeah and I just don't think it makes sense to have the overlap when it's unnecessary. That doesn't mean we can't expect YT, behind the scenes, twitter and other social media updates almost daily, of course. And I'm looking forward to more of that, which has been fantastic thus far.

Makes me wonder if they'll even hold back the TITLE of the film until April, but I really doubt it.

Good points. I guess they won't be following what they did with VII as there are other variables.

In other news, Celebration 2017 in Orlando

Going. Done deal.

Nice job. You're making me wanna get tickets and take time off..

Any chance that info on Rebels season 3 will be released at Celebration? And how well is that show doing? I heard rumors that it might be cancelled.

Dave Filoni's said there'll be a big Rebels announcement at Celebration. They'll definitely have a panel there. I'm guessing it'll be the Thrawn announcement.

Something big is going to happen that I think people really, really want, and I know that I've wanted it for a while. We've figured out a way to do it. It's a very important moment in Star Wars and a very important moment for Star Wars fans....You will definitely learn more about that at Celebration coming up, because I'm going to talk about it specifically

This is really TFA related, but that thread's pretty much dead so I'm posting it here. Mark Hamill confirmed that the much rumored "hand floating through space" scene really was the original opening for TFA:

I can tell you now that in the original opening shot of [Episode VII], the first thing that came into frame was a hand with a lightsaber, a severed hand that enters the atmosphere, and then the hand and bone burns away and goes sticking into the surface of Jakku, and this alien hand comes in - I don’t know if it was Maz but it was an alien hand who takes the lightsaber way - and then the movie proceeds as you see it.

Should probably not trust the 7-11 security cameras quite so much
There was an amazing amount of accurate leaks on TFA, this time around they really seem to have locked everything down.

When this was rumored, I never understood how Luke's hand gets from Bespin to Jakku. Someone would have had to retrieve it, transport it, and drop it into orbit with the lightsaber still clutched.

That opening would have been confusing for people new to the series, but it would have befuddled everyone else, too. Seems like a good set of cuts (a story for another time).
