Indeed it is! Their only other internally developed HD-era game has been Catherine.
Nobody gives a shit about edits that they'll never see or would have cared about even if they did see.

Nice scores, but it wasn't unexpected for me (well, a 9.5 from polygon definitely was). Atlus knows how to make an rpg, and first impressions from Japan were very positive.
I know the fanbase doesn't like that direction but i don't think Paper Mario will get bad scores. Still, these are probably the last two games i'll play on my Wii U, i'll get Zelda too but i'll play the NX version.
This is so weird to think that the HD era began over 10 years ago and this is the first high rez SMT game. Hopefully we'll get them more frequently from now on.
I only played about 2 hours so far but really, really like it.
It just oozes style, just like the Persona games. Every single menu seems to have more work put in that many UIs as a whole. Other than that, it seems to be a fairly traditional JRPG gameplay-wise in a pretty cool, different scenario.
Also, a classic JRPG on a big console. We don't really get that too often.

Seems to be reviewing well. Color me intrigued.
The story is, well, uh, it has one.
It's pretty basic, the side stories are more fun (when they're not asking you to kill 10 monsters for them or whatever).
In chapter 5 they basically just dump the entire back half of the story on you all at once lol.
This is pretty crazy when you think about it

It may still but I think this game will have a much smaller run and will be harder to pick up because rpg gamers tend to hold on to this stuff.

Reviews are looking good! Glad I pre-ordered the game after all, can't wait to actually get a chance to play it.
Great to see these positive scores coming in (but honestly I would have bought it eventually either way lol).
This is sort of off topic, but a lot of people in this thread are saying that they'll hold off on SO5, and pick this up instead, on the basis that SO5 is going to drop in price quickly. What's the rationale behind that? Is it just because SO4 for PS3 dropped relatively quickly?
I ask because I'm in the same situation as many: no way I can afford both right now, but eventually want to play them both.

I've always speculated that Atlus decided to keep quiet about the hardships of transitioning to HD-level development, to avoid the fan outrage that companies like Squenix and Nintendo have gotten. Sliding release date of P5 aside, they really haven't gotten anything nearly as quotable as "HD towns are hard" to hold against them, which is pretty smart.

SO5 tanked in Japan, and is already down to ~1500 yen. This is also more likely to be a small run and hard to obtain new down the road.

Meanwhile this is a Nintendo game and a niche one at that so prices are expected to be more or less stable (Xenoblade X is only 10$ cheaper on amazon since launch and in my country is still at launch price).

Seems Amazon nor Best Buy have the CE in stock for the 20% discounted.
I just paid full price + tax + shipping for the CE... just shy of $100. Wasn't planning on that; but this game is reviewing way better than I expected, and I suspect this LE will actually be very limited.

Squenix games tend to drop in price fairly quickly. Nintendo games historically have not outside of Nintendo Selects, and since this is one of the very last games being released on the Wii U, I anticipate that there won't be many copies to begin with.

The more of you who buy before the game hits the bargain bin, the more likely we get another game in the series. Playing it smart now may prove to be dumb further down the road.
Well the real issue is that you take a risk with a game like this, not ordering it now, because it may be very hard to get period. As in no bargain bin period.
I just know I won't have time to play it any time soon. Might actually just go digital. Get some cheap credit at BB this week, or during another sale and then pick it up, not to mention any chance of a MyNintendo coupon.
I don't see how that is a bad thing when several of the development team and the voice actors for the characters expressed a desire to continue the IP and game, whether as a sequel or a port.
A lot of the fans have been hoping for it as well, despite it's unlikeliness, after the comments made by the team expressing they want to do more #FE.
So yes if possible you should buy and support the game before it gets slashed in prices, if it gets slashed in price.

I wasn't ever going to NOT get this game but the Polygon review did bring up something that I knew they would do that will definitely bother me when I play this; wishing they went more in depth, darker or realistic about the bad parts of the idol industry (which is most of it). I know that the game is striving for a more light-hearted and happy tone and I certainly will not fault it for that but it's much the same reason I have issues with Pokemon or...another...series I have suddenly forgotten the name of; I find more in depth explorations of ideas a game brings up fascinating than when it's handled as a side-quest that is over quickly or beaten by friendship. It's more of a frustration at how far they could go or how strongly they could explore it vs how surface level they treat it.
That being said, Imma still play the fuck out of and enjoy this. I just wish games would sometimes go in hard on stuff instead of relegating it to a brief touch on an element before throwing it away.

I'm in the same boat. I'm trying to find ANYBODY whose gotten a CE shipment from Amazon confirmed.
My review isn't done because exam season is kicking my ass, but yeah, I've really enjoyed the 6 or so hours I've put in. If J-Pop/Idol stuff doesn't completely turn you off and you like RPGs, this is a good bet. My only point of comparison with the SMT franchise is Persona, but I'm liking both the dungeons and the combat more than Persona's.
But what if J-Pop/Idol stuff completely turns you on ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
