How the hell Central Intelligence has 66% RT? It's one of the worst movies I've seen in few years. I laughed zero times. I smiled few times because it made me feel uncomfortable in a bad way.

And I saw even worse movie today. It's coming out soon. Embargo until next Wednesday. What a Summer. :)

Humor works for some and for some it doesn't. I liked it. A few scenes were generally hilarious to me and Hart and Johnson have good chemistry together.

I am going to guess that you are talking about Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates (unless Secret Life of Pets is utterly Terrible). That film looks like another Bad Grandpa tier effort by Efron.

I know. This is just that kind of American humor I find really awkward and horrible. These kind of movies get crushed her every time, I have no idea why they even bother. I guess they're cheap to fill the schedule.

Even if it wasn't possible to get a cut of Mad Max past censorship (I'm not sure that they even tried), WB could have released Creed or even The Man From U.N.C.L.E. in China if they needed to hold onto their slots.

BFG is not on the schedule yet. I am not sure if it will be one of the quota films in China, given how many films Disney has already had out this year there (Star Wars, Zootopia, The Jungle Book, Civil War, Alice, and Finding Dory). China only allows 34 revenue sharing import films (mostly from hollywood) a year. Disney can't have them all. I assume that Doc Strange and Moana will be taking up two more spots, so that's already 8 from Disney.

Speaking of which, WB is wasting one of those 34 spots on Tarzan, as they did with Pan and Jupiter Ascending last year.

Well that sucks for Espilbergo.

And hey, China might go for Tarzan!

Mike and Dave?

Gitesh from Box office Guru is saying $14.7M for Dory on Tuesday which is pretty crazy if accurate.

I went last night to a 7:45 2D showing and it was fucking packed with kids and adults alike. The 3D showing at 8 had sold out well in advance.

there were also a ton of small children heading into the 10pm showing after. Movie is going to have good weekday performance due to school being out.

I guess Fox padded the international number for Independence Day to claim an overseas opening over $100M. The actual result ended up being $99.5M, down about $3M.

Looks like my inkling that Purge 3 would open above Tarzan and The BFG may have some weight behind it.

The BFG seems to be lost in Dory's ocean. Families may not know it exists or simply not care.

No superheroes or talking animals.

Rth is reporting $10.3M for Dory, and $3.5M for ID4R on Wednesday.

I find it sort of humorous that we were joking about a sequel to Wreck-it-Ralph last week and now Disney has announced one.

EDIT: Also, Gitesh points out that Disney became the first studio in history to release four $300M+ films in four consecutive months. Unless I am forgetting something, I am pretty sure that this is the first time a studio has had four $300M+ domestic films in a single year period.

And they'll have at least 5, maybe 7 before the year is over.

Alright you bastards, pick the movie I go see tomorrow for 3 dollars
The BFG (IMAX 3D)
The Legend of Tarzan (2D)
Purge
Our Kind of Traitor
Swiss Army Man

I liked The BFG. Our Kind of Traitor was kind of bad/mediocre. Haven't seen the others, but Swiss Army Man would be my personal choice, because farting dead Harry Potter.

To break up Bronson's indecision, we can probably go ahead and call $500M for Dory unless in collapses next weekend.

Thursday will be around $10M. Using the exact same increases/decreases as last weekend, you get ~$42M for Dory on Fri-Sun this weekend, which is in the same ballpark as The Jungle Book's third weekend ($43.7M). The Jungle Book ended up making over $105M after its third weekend without the benefit of summer weekdays and a 44% drop in weekend #4 thanks to Civil War.

Dory would be at $480M with the same legs and no summer weekdays. Disney will re-expand at the end of August if the film is anywhere close to $500M (Monsters University and Inside Out both got re-expansions, with Inside Out making another $10M from said expansion).

Awesome for the purge. Looks to easily do $30M for the weekend.

On the other hand, that's terrible for BFG. Starting to feel like Tarzan is going to be spared from the media because Spielberg+Disney are gonna be behind a movie that bombs so hard it leave an impact crater.

Tarzan: so forgotten it won't even be talked about as a bomb.

The Purge films so far are very front loaded on opening day. They have taken a 37% and 27% dive after opening night. The second film also opened lower than the first one, but had better legs to come with a higher end gross.

I hope The BFG bombing will finally get rid of the uncanny CG films like Beowulf, Polar Express and Tintin. They all look like shit and it actively destroys the stories they want to tell.

The summer movie season of 2016: so bad even sure things like Spielberg + Mathison + Dahl were misses.

You really would think that the ET Dream Team would have been able to make something that had a better response than deafening indifference.

...not that I'm going to help, since I got my sights set on Swiss Army Man this weekend.

Yeah, and the source material seemed like a perfect fit.

Then again, we live in a world where the combination of Spielberg + Steven Moffat + Edgar Wright + Joe Cornish + Andy Serkis + Hergé + the best visual effects in cinema today only equaled "pretty good adventure film...enjoyable, sure!"

The BFG was never a sure thing. Little buzz surrounding it and Dory was pretty much a lock to come out ahead even a couple weeks after release. Families are not going to see The BFG because of Spielberg (kids don't care). They want Dory.

Great number for Purge 3. This weekend will guarantee Purge 4 which I'm all for since I like the franchise.

Happy Canada Day to all my Canadian broheims.
