This is some shameful shit. You give the finger to the entire global scientific community and fuck us all over in the process for generations to come.

I've never seen such a great and powerful nation sink so incredibly low.

If I were a scientist researching how to reverse/lessen climate change, I'd want to fucking leave this country. Seriously, the potential for brain drain makes this decision extra fucking stupid.

This can't possibly be true, can it? This genuinely makes me angry. Like, I have to imagine most people realize the danger of this, do people really just not care? Isn't there something we can do to fight this? This is getting serious. The people need to rally the electoral college to not allow this man to take office. We need million man protests like what's going on in South Korea.
No, most people in the US don't see climate change as an immediate, existential threat. Many are deniers after having been brainwashed by Fox News, others are just more focused on immediate concerns like not having a job or their community crumbling.

FWIW I fully believe in climate change but suspect we will simply have to turn to geoengineering to fix this issue. There's a number of different options including a solar umbrella that are practical and potentially cheaper than getting the world economy off of fossil fuel, so we may end up just going with that if climate change accelerates and begins causing serious issues.

My ideal situation would be going all out on fusion research and building as many safe fission plants and renewables as we can right now but it doesn't look like that's going to happen.

If you pour gasoline all over yourself and light yourself on fire, the thing that is going to save you is going to be something that puts out the fire, like a blanket or an extinguisher. But that only works if you stop pouring gasoline over yourself. If you are continuing to pour gas all over everything while you fight to put the fire out, it's never going to go out.

There is a reason Hillary Clinton called a good chunk of Donald Trump's supporters "deplorables". He's in office now because a massive chunk of the country doesn't give a fuck about science, foreign countries, etc... He was elected specifically to be a middle finger to everyone else.

I still can't believe that the nation with the best reputation on basic research and the nation with the most and best ranked universities has so many science deniers.
However, green energy is cheaper though. The return to coal and fuel is just fully caused by other interests than the need for energy.

GG. Guess we're fucked for good then. Small countries like my own (Portugal), Norway, Sweeden, etc, going all green (or moving in that direction) has a lot less impact if the big ones (US, China, India, Russia, etc) also don't move in that direction....

I wish that Orange fuck and his
"gouvernement" nothing less than death. Fine if you guys want to ruin your country, but running the earth for everyone else is beyond evil. By destroying lifes of millions.

will learn eventually
That climate has become a partisan topic is just so fucking shameful. In most other developed nation, speaking out against saving the environment is a surefire way to lose voters, except in the US for some godforsaken reason.

Fuck Fox News, fuck equal time for opposing "opinions", IT'S NOT A FUCKING OPINION YOU FUCKFACES

And fuck Trump and his fucking "clean coal" bullshit.

The most ironic thing really is that China and Capitalism may actually end up foiling their plans. China is going green "bigly" and the market has solar energy at a record low, which probably drives coal and oil out of business sooner rather than later.

Fuck everyone who didn't vote to stop this but could have
Yeah, and to add to that list how about everyone that goes "oh those silly republicans and climate change deniers they have doomed us all" and "boy climate change is sure going to suck" while doing absolutely nothing about it aside from jerking each other off while trying to look smug and smart because "hey at least we accept climate change as fact".
Basically fuck everyone that accepts that climate change is a fact but does nothing or next to nothing about it to fight. Voting for the other person isn't really enough. This problem started decades ago.

How about a donation to the Natural Resources Defense Council?

The combination of lots of EU countries going all green will contribute to lower prices and more green infrastructure so other countries can easier follow. China is also doing a lot, but considering their size and energy needs they have a ton of coal of course. But at least they see the need to move forward.

Hey, at least the history books will show that you guys were on the right side of history. That counts for something.

Well, the morons wanted their moron President with his moronic "policies" that are just differences of "opinions" and "views."

Get fucked Republicans for bringing the nation down so low to your disgusting shit-level of intelligence.

She was wrong to say that but not inaccurate. Trump voters are woefully myopic, at best. Future generations will look back on them poorly. But I reckon they'll have bigger problems to contend with.

That's actually a huge danger to American R&D hegemony. The only reason the US is so far ahead of other countries is because it systematically poached researchers, by luring them with the promise of lavish funding and ample facilities.

If the anti-scientific bunch currently in the wheelhouse start getting results, I can see not just those researchers returning to their homelands (despite the lesser capacities) but actual US scientists emigrating.

I once told an American friend of mine to listen to the scientific community and not the politicians when it came to scientific subjects. He replied that scientists are not objective because they do science for a living.

I didn't really know how to respond to that. How can people hold science in such a low regard?

US deserves sanctions big time.

Perfect excuse for that coming up if he tries to implement tariffs anyway. EU and China will both rinse the US in a trade war.

I used to think those stories where the bad guy wants to destroy the world were unrealistic because no bad guy would *actually* go and destroy the world unless they had a convenient back up planet to run away to.

...I stand corrected.

I hope the history books (if future generations haven't starved to death by then), don't just mention Trump, but all the deplorables that voted for him.

"Politicians aren't objective because they do politics for a living"?

Equally nonsensical

What is it going to change?

California still will have high standards and so will New York I guess. And because both of them are that important, nobody will produce anything they can just sell in the red states.

And even if coal would restart, who is going to buy it? Nobody needs that much coal anymore, not even for powerplants. The oil price is still so low, the piplines are actually a stupid idea financially and tar sand plants only work with a much higher oil price as is most of fracking.

The big red states just drag the US along, even if they scream and kick against it, they can not change state laws and the red states are not big enough a market to create stinking stuff nobodfy else on the planet is buying.

"Stop complaining guuuys. Hes gonna be our president whether you like it or not. The recount or trying to convince the EC to change their vote is a waste of time."

That shitty-ass defeatism I see everywhere is part of the reason why this is happening.

She was not wrong to say that, a sizeable chunk of his supporters are fucking garbage. The other half is selfishness and tribalism where they're okay with minorities being thrown under the bus as long as their people have jobs.

Don't expect any sympathy from me for people who elected a man whose official policy is to deny climate change.

Wow, and in the late 90ies, everything still looked so good for the world.

It's really incredible what happened in the last 17 years since 2001.

There is always Mars to colonize, if Earth becomes an apocalyptic hellhole by the next few centuries.

No no no no no! That is not going to happen before climate changes becomes a severe problem. Do you know how much of a population we need on Mars to have a viable gene pool? All those people need to be transported out of the gravity well of Earth and then spend long years in space just to get to Mars. Then you need to think about things like agriculture. You can't just plant things in the soil on Mars and have them grow. What about manufacturing to have a self sufficient colony they need to manufacture things from glass and concrete all the way to computers. You want to send all those factories up the gravity well? What about mining for resources you need a lot of heavy machinery for that. The list of things for a self sustaining colony are endless. If we start tomorrow we might just be finished in two hundred years time but by then the Earth will mostly be under water.

Fucking awful. It's amazing that a completely invalid belief is now the policy of the most powerful nation in the world just because some morons think feelings Trump science.

I will say, the silver lining in all of this is that coal didn't die because the administration was pro-climate change.

It died because everything else was cheaper.

We might yet be saved by corporate greed, which is almost equally depressing.

Technically, you could do it with around twenty women, one man, and a sperm bank large enough to add a new male every generation until the population reaches a large enough size for inbreeding to no longer be a problem.

The other stuff, though, would probably be a pretty big problem. Even if all the ice melts and the average temperature increases by 5*C, it'd probably be easier to figure out how to build a freeze ray than transplant the population to Mars.
