No offense but I really can't trust day 1 reactions. The last time I did that was for Force Awakens and that ended up being as mediocre as a Marvel movie.

"The film, starring Felicity Jones as Jyn Erso, an outlaw recruited by the Rebellion to steal the plans for the original Death Star, is set just prior to the events of 1977’s original Star Wars, and references to the first trilogy abound, foreshadowing events-yet-to-come.

• The tone is, as promised by Lucasfilm, a war story – a relentless action tale. Fears that much-discussed reshoots were softening the story or watering down the ending appear to be unfounded, since the movie presents a much grittier soldier’s story than previous films. Think of it as Band of Brothers with a Star Wars setting, more than earning its PG-13 rating.

• Chirrut Imwe, the blind warrior monk played by Hong Kong action star Donnie Yen, and K-2SO, the blunt-talking security droid played by Firefly star Alan Tudyk, steal the movie. Ironically, they both provide some of the movie’s funniest and most heart-tugging scenes.

• Much like The Force Awakens, there are a significant number of shots from the Rogue One trailers that aren’t in the finished film. Director Gareth Edwards says he shot a lot of footage in a cinema verite style, trying to capture the chaos of battle, so either trailer-makers drew heavily from material that was later unused, or portions of those scenes were reshot.

• Despite its heavy tone, there’s a lot of humor in Rogue One. There’s also a lot of heart, particularly in the father-daughter story of Jyn and Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen) a scientist who is stolen away to work on the Empire’s Death Star project. The film also features a gripping, almost prescient speech by Jyn that will leave many fans with a lump in their throats.

• Finally, Darth Vader… The Dark Lord of the Sith delivers one moment of pure horror. You could argue there’s even more than one scene that fits this description. Rogue One shows a ruthless, predatory side of Vader when he is at the height of his powers.

• Actually … one more note: Fans of the Disney XD animated series Star Wars: Rebels should keep their eyes wide open for a number of special surprises. (That’s all I’m going to say about that.)"

Wow, just wow.

Ooh, sounds like there's more than just a glimpse of the Ghost.

I'm gonna tag this since this seems to be big, according to impressions:
Cassian & K2 bite it.

Shouldn't be too surprising though.

At a minimum spoilers in this thread should be spoiler tagged until Friday

They didnt want to split it into a spoiler and non-spoiler thread because soon after release it just becomes the same thread twice. I support that decision. However, since we are still pre-release, some sort of distinction is required.
I was going to suggest the same thing until release day because I thought there was no safe area to discuss impressions, but then I found the following thread:

Rogue One Reviews & Impressions (Spoiler Tags Required)
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1324133

I guess that's where we should be discussing early impressions safely. However, I still think time-limited spoiler tags are a good thing. Some other forums I go to have a single discussion thread with required spoiler tags pre-release and then opens it up post-release. I think that's a good system.

So when do reviews get released?

Tuesday, 5PM ET - or is it 12PM ET now?

For future OTs, I'll probably do this. Lesson learned.

By "release" does that mean any wide release? Cause I'm (and I'm sure many others) going to seeing it Wednesday night Australia time which is a fair bit early.

We should still make spoiler tags required in this thread until release. Minor thing but will keep any weird accidents from happening

That's not a bad idea, I've seen it before, too. I think that's something to think about for the next big event film.

I would love it if we heard Hera but it's too bad she wouldn't be in a B-Wing if that really is the Ghost in that one screenshot.

Wow, just wow.

I was wondering if any of the rebels from Star Wars: Rebels will be in this movie.

I don't watch Rebels, but I really appreciate that Lucasfilm makes an effort in tying it up with the movie.

Same. I heard that he even uses his lightsaber on a few of the main crew. I was happy with just force choking a few rebels, but using his saber? I can only get so erect.

I'd imagine one or two lightsaber skewerings, but really, I was going to be okay with just him being a menacing figure.

I wouldn't trust the spoilers going around on Reddit just yet. They claim that Vader
kills multiple people with his lightsaber
when Empire Magazine explicitly said that
there are no lightsabers used in the movie
. Now that could be misdirection but Lucasfilm doesn't usually do that, or it could have been an error on Empire's part, or it could have been true.

Pulled this from Reddit, so grain of salt and all (concerning Vader):

He is in the film briefly throughout but he becomes more prominent at the end. The team are running through the ship and there are no lights (very atmospheric, the cinematorgraphy and lighting is fantastic). Chirrut suddenly stops and is in pain, then says "he's here." Then we hear the breathing, none of the team know where it's coming from (it's very dark). It's like a horror scene, like nothing we've seen in a Star Wars film. The breathing gets louder and louder as Vader gets closer, this literally goes on for minutes, the tension was unbelievable. Eventually the space is illuminated by Vader igniting his lightsaber and the slaughter begins.

I will trust them because I need it to happen and it fits with the "horror" scene talked about yesterday in the reactions.

Yeah, but this seems to be the general OT, complete with the fancy first post and all that.

Edit: I saw the reasoning in the OT, not sure why Rogue One is getting a different treatment

Some of us think this should be more of the main treatment since the TFA OT was pointless as the spoiler thread was way more popular.

I figured it's better to have a more focused thread. Less barcodes (err, spoiler tags), more actual chatter.

Non-spoiler OTs and Spoiler Threads end up talking about the same thing, just without spoiler tags for the latter. Seems to just cut discussion up into two places.

Rather than clutter up Off-Topic with 3 or more threads (usually it's OT, Spoiler Thread, Reviews Thread), I thought I'd consolidate the OT and Spoiler Thread into one central thread, and was planning on putting up a Reviews thread for spoiler-tagged discussion when reviews come out on Tuesday. Cross-Section was cool enough to make one earlier today, since Twitter impressions have been coming out following the premiere last night.

Ah, I guess that makes sense. It is true that the spoiler threads tend to get the bulk of disucssion

If this is true I'm gonna lose my shit when I watch this scene!!!

Ultimately, people can use this thread as they please, but I figured I'd let discussion flow freely here vs. the need to either spoiler tag everything or keeping discussion restricted to general "I'm excited!" posts - not that those aren't welcome.

So is this a spoiler thread? I see two threads with the word spoiler in it. Just trying to exercise caution. I don't even want black bar temptation but I guess the best COA is to ignore threads until I see it.
