Interesting comments from Matt Hargett in RGT's podcast on the benefits of a super fast I/O.

Matt thinks the biggest benefits of the SSD won't be no loading and gameplay design (like long corridors or elevators) but it instead it will be much more efficient use of RAM which will be a significant upgrade over current gen.

This is because the fast I/O will allow only what's in the immediate field of view to be streamed in and out instantly instead of anything which is much further away and out of view. Matt called the data which is in the field of view and relevant as "warm/hot" data and the much further data as "cold". This will also allow the developers to stream in much more polygon/triangle heavy assets as well as much higher quality textures to the point were the GPU may become the bottleneck because can it even render such high polygon assets and high resolution textures fast enough?

Can we speculate on the math of this? I'm not good with numbers so hopefully someone can do a better job than me.

PS4 had 8 GB of RAM and 4.5 GB of it was available for the game, keep in mind this 4.5 GB the game was using would most likely be made up of 50-60% of cold data which was not even in the field of view and irrelevant for the next few seconds of gameplay, this was due to the constraints of the slow HDD. Considering this, developer were still able to create jaw dropping visuals and graphics like we saw in Uncharted 4, Last of Us 2 and God of War.

Now let's think about the RAM usage on the PS5, it's 16 GB total and how much will be available for the game? does 2 GB sound like a fair figure for the OS RAM reserve? maybe more but let's run with the numbers. Now the PS5 would have 14 GB of RAM available to the developer and for the game, that's a 200% increase over the PS4. More importantly this 14 GB of RAM will only need to be filled with hot/warm data thanks to the PS5's SSD and would contain zero cold data, the potential for this is insane when you think about it.

This is all speculation of course and I might have gotten some of the numbers wrong but would be curious to know what everyone else thinks?
This is what Cerny talked about too. The challenge is the scheduling and overall system complexity as the assets are literally streaming all the time. So in theory it sounds good. But the more I thought about, the more challenges there are. Yet, nothing is unsolvable. Especially with a much more capable cpu. Sony’s vision is this for sure. Otherwise they won’t bother with the cache scrubber at all

Well this part explains why Cerny went fast and narrow.
Clocking the GPU that high instead of going with more CUs had to be for a reason.

Sony releasing a Wireless, finger track higher res PSVR2 at around $250... no. I would think that would be very unlikely.
Im using the Oculus quest 2 for reference, which offers all those features (sans wifi 6) for $300. The PSVR2 wouldn't need the built-in VR capable SoC, Ram, and storage of the quest, so it'd be cheaper assuming identical specs. Of course if sony decided to go for an oled with foveated rendering tech that would shoot up the price, but considering it would release holiday 2021 at the earliest i dont expect it to go beyond $300

They are trash. The only thing going for them is that they can bleed enough money to make it worth your while.

The only thing i truly like about Microsoft is their continued support for disabled gamers, trying to find new ways to help people with disabilities.

I would like to see more companies do this as a bare minimum. wether it be in-game systems or designing hardware/ controllers etc

Seeing companies like Naughty dog for example adding so much accessibility to/ for people is fantastic.

Any company that does this when they don't have to are fucking stars for doing so.

Now if they (Microsoft)could just sort out there gaming + pr division.

I don't think PS5 VR will be more than 400.
The main reason is as you said it's just not necessary. You know the SOC in the Quest 2 is super high end and that thing is priced quite low weirdly enough (your data actually jfl).
They can build an insane VR device for a super affordable price and if they're smart that's exactly what they're going to do.

Haven't owned a xbox since
this is the kinda shit that Microsoft keeps on doing.

this is just another reason i can never trust them.

The only talent they have is the checks they write, money

Is this what they were doing in UE5 demo? Talking about rendering billions of triangles quickly. Nanite?or maybe I'm confusing something.

Edit nanite not nanotechnology. Phone auto correct.

Are they going to make compatible with PS4 VR?

An interesting tidbit from the Bethesda purchase. Bethesday tech that optimizes game engines to enhance the experience of a streamed game. "Orion can achieve dramatic latency reductions of up to 20% per frame as well as up to a 40% reduction in required bandwidth. "
This technology qualifies as an IP by definition so should come with the acquisition no?

Some 4chan rumors I saw someone post. I dont believe 4 chan rumors but with everything going on i wouldnt be surprised if someone at sony was feeling disgruntled and deiced to spill the beans.

>Kenichiro Yoshida has been extremely frustrated with Jim Ryan, from the censorship policy that nearly tarnished the playstation image among japenese developers to TLOU2 financial failure, the PS5 surprised preorder as well as Undermining the Xbox Gamepass (when PS5 games are 70$) was the final straw to Jim's Position.

>Jim Ryan will Step down before March 2021, with Shuhei Yoshida Taking Over as the Head of Playstation, his First Priority would be to Reverse the Censorship Policy (in Japan at least, to fix the PR image among Japanese devs), as well as Merging PS+ and PSNow Under a single Umbrella to Counter the Xbox Game Pass.

>TLOU2 was a Financial failure, the announced budget was 100M$, but it was more than that, closer to 150-200M$ because of Covid-19, The Game Delay from May to June, as well as Sony Paying the Game Journalists to give it high scores (mostly to undermine the Leaks by the now Former Naughty Dog Employee), the game is selling for 20$> at major retailers.

>Naughty Dog is being reconstructed, with lower crunch time after the Leaks from the Mistreated Employee, Niel Druckmann is in Talks with Amy Hennings to patch things up, their next project (FPS) will have a Limited budget compared to their previous titles (LOUS2 still behind Break-Even).

>The Silent Hill Rumors are True, it Will Be Reveled in TGA 2020, Sony Tried to Purchase the IPs (Metal Gear, Castlevania, Silent Hill) around 2017 for 1.5B$ but Konami Rejected the Offer, wanted at least 3B$ which is too high for such properties.

>Sony Knew about the Microsoft/Zenimax acquisition Talks since 2019, they Offered 3.5 Billion for Zenimax but Microsoft Undercuts them around January with 7.5B$, thats why they Secured for two timed exclusives Deathloop and Ghostwire Tokyo (The PS5 Starfield Time Exclusive Situation had nothing to do with the acquisition, Todd Shut Down the Offer Himself).

>GOW2 is no Where near a Presentable State, it Will Skip TGA2020 (which is why Silent Hill Reveal Was Delayed), there's a high change it would be Delayed to 2022 even with crunch time, will have a timeskip and Atreus/Loki is Bisexual.

• >Japan Studio AAA Sci-Fi Adventure (Codenamed Rayspace) Was in Development Hell, the game started Development since 2015 for the PS4, and it was almost canceled in 2018 until Shuhei Yoshida stepped in himself, Moving the Development to the PS5 Developed by Tsutomu Kouno, will Feature Gundam Style Characters to Appeal to the Japanese Audiences, will be Revealed in 2021 and scheduled for release in early 2022.

>Sony has already signed with Kojima Productions and Bluepoint for acquisition, Announcement in December.
This is the dumbest shit ever written.

Little update on the PS5 preorders tomorrow in Gamestop stores.

The number each store has will be based on volume of each store just like previous Xbox preorders and will be approx double the amount your store had of the XsX.

Plus its not guaranteed to be launch day but within a week of launch and its disk PS5 only from what I gather.

Edit to add each store should put up a paper again on their door at closing tonight showing their allotment.

Enter trillion dollar company number 3. Amazon doing some shit. Watch Dog legions day & date, ubisoft games day & date. Pretty cheap price ,can be used through webpages.

And so next gen content war kicks off. A lot of studios/indies/publishers about to get easy cheques. Shit's about to get messy.

The last of us 2 received alot of negativity when the story leaked and has recently fallen off the sales chart despite only launching in june, its predecessor sold 20 million, and the first one was also given away in PS Plus. The fact that the sequel has fallen off the charts this quick isnt a good sign. Sure maybe some of the things on there arent believable, but the last of us 2 being a failure isnt unbelievable.
Dude, did you just write that shit up yourself and post it as "4chan" rumour?
