I remember him specifically saying that Ellie's character as his "secret" agenda. AKA making Ellie a powerful female lead with her own flaws and struggles, not making it an obvious one note girl power story like other shitty poorly thought-out pieces of entertainment. The relationship between father and daughter is a powerful theme. They did not fall in the obvious trap of Joel man bad. The ending had nothing to do with right or left imo. You can use spoiler tag in next post because I don't possibly see how the ending of that game was in anyway political.
Excuse me but how "Ellies character" not "girl power story"? The entirety of TLOU2 is a power fantasy for teenagers and lesbian women.
I remember that video from Portland riots or something... some tiny girl who didn't even look like she's 20 was talking to a conservative guy who went to talk to them. He was trying to see their point of view and she ended the conversation with "we'll burn your business, too". I immediately remembered this Ellie character and realized who that game is made for. And you guys are paying for it :D :messenger_tears_of_joy: :messenger_tears_of_joy: :messenger_tears_of_joy:

TLOU2 is a power fantasy, I don't know how you can not see that. Dina exists with one and only purpose - to make Ellie look strong and to give her plot armor. Majority of Dina's dialogue is "Ellie, are you gonna kill them? You're so strong. I'm so glad I chose you over that weak Asian guy" XD

This is about the first game. Stay on topic.

Just fucking play the game through or quit. I find these threads so pointless.

Or the “sell me on a game” threads.

Or the “I bought a switch, tell me what games to buy!” Threads

and how is a game about zombie like apocalypse hitting too close to home? Because I wanna shoot some zombies and you need to tell me where this too close to home place is.

I AM CURRENTLY IN PITTSBURG : PLEASE KEEP THE SPOILERS LIMITED PAST THE FIRST SET PIECE OF PITTSBURGH IF POSSIBLE
Sorry for the caps but I'm trying to keep this as spoiler free as possible regarding anything past the first big set piece of Pittsburgh as I am currently dealing with the local gang after a bit of wandering around.

Somehow I managed to remain spoiler free for TLOU:1 and started paying the Remastered version in October.
I don't enjoy the combat so I reduced the difficulty to Easy after the woman got iced so I could get through these parts and fast forward to the narrative.
Being spoiler free I really enjoyed the first ~20 min of the game but after that I have lost interest in the game because of the unsatisfying gameplay and narrative I don't really care for.

I think I gave this game a fair shake, but maybe the narrative will really pick up and really grip me in the near future, but maybe I'm wasting my time and thus far I have experienced everything this game has to offer.

Thoughts?
Should I keep going?
Am I feeling this way because reality is a bit bleak and the game is hitting 'too close to home' and I should try picking it up again later?
Is there a story beat I should get to before throwing in the towel?
Just watch all the story cutscenes and walking simulator banters on Youtube. Even then it can be boring at times maybe watch it on x1.5/x2 speed?
Colossal waste of time to progress in game if you're not enjoying the gameplay.

I was just about ready to drop the game after Pittsburgh. But, I did perservere and it was worth it. The last third is without question the best, at least on a first playthrough. Both the story and the gameplay picks up by a lot I feel and the ending is quite something. If you do drop it I think you should still watch a cinematic compilation of the last parts.
K, seems like a trend.
The best part is the first 15 minutes.
Right, I really liked that part but was downhill from there, lol

I don’t at all. Games are usually what makes you buy a system. That’s usually the first thing you look at when deciding if you want to buy a system.
The ads with celebrities prove you wrong :p Many people buy gaming systems and never use them. Look at Cyberpunk 2077 sales. 13 million! What were those 13 million people doing when, say, FF VII Remake released?

Marketing is all about making people feel like they want to buy something because "it looks cool and as result makes me look cool", "everyone does it", etc.

Wat? Lol

We are talking about Gaf posters here bud. Not grandma seeing wii bowling on TV. Your Avg Gaf poster is way more in touch and probably just looking to make a thread ;)

Anyways. Back to OP.

Just finish the game at this point.

I impulse bought part 2 in the sale for something to play on my PS5, but despite two previous attempts (one on PS3 and one on PS4) I had never got through the first one, so I embarked on a third attempt on PS5 of part 1 yesterday - and again I'm finding it a total slog. Not just the gameplay, but the story too. I am determined to finish it this time though. It must get better, story wise at least - if not, it will be right up there with what I personally consider to be the most overrated games of all time.

Most Sony exclusives have some degree of overhype, but this would be off the charts even by those standards. As much as anything I am going to complete it out of a) wanting to play the sequel b) curiosity if it does actually get good at any point and c) stubborness.

Gameplay wise? It never gets better. It's exactly what it is from the beginning with no deviation, and I truly hated the gameplay in TLOU1.

That said, it's worth sticking through it for the story and characters. This was fantastic all the way through IMO. It's he opposite of TLOU2. I hated the story, but I think the gameplay was actually a huge step up. Stick through for the gameplay in 2 IMO

The gameplay in number 2 had what I would consider basic quality of life improvements, namely not needing shivs. Being able to go prone doesn't really make or break the game for me. The AI is still pretty stupid though in the second game though, something I hated from the first game (i.e. Ellie/Dina kind of just walk around when you're trying to be stealthy).

When you press the options button.

Look, if you’re enjoying the game by Pittsburgh, it’s probably best to move on. The rest of the game isn’t that different to where your opinion will change.

The first time i got this game i turned it off shortly after
Tess's death
simply because i guess I just couldn't get into it and it kinda scared me.

But then during a snow day two months later I went back and played it and it easily became one of my best gaming experiences ever. Sometimes some things just don't click with you at the time, sometimes u just gotta wait it out a bit come back later.

People honestly shit on part 2 a lot for it's narrative and stuff but idc. I 100% believe tlou2 is the better game to play overall. I mean it's a lot more creative imo and not as much as a slow burn as the first one. They also managed to keep the gameplay more fresh and interesting and level design very good throughout the whole experience whereas the first one I agree gameplay wise it never really got that major feeling of progression.

Anyways i've beaten tlou 1 three times this year and part 2 for times so clearly i am biased lol but at the end of the day some things click some things don't. you never know

The main meta for TLOU is resource management and carefully approaching conflicts due to the easy possibility of death. The lower difficulty levels you can play as a straight up shooter more or less, which pretty much changes the game

For me Survival difficulty was perfect difficulty setting, it was hard enough to be satisfying but not enough to be frustrating.

In normal and hard the game gives you too much resource to the point that it takes lot of fun out of the encounters.

I beat the game in Survival this year (first playthrough)and I have to say it was pretty cool especially without the "sound sense".

But I find the resource management to be pretty "fake". The game don't let you stock up ammo (no drop if you have some in your backpack). But when you run low on ammo, enemies drop them almost 100% of the time. I was a bit stress on that on the beginning but realize that I could use my ammo without much restriction (as long as I kill ennemies I will get some back)

If you're over 5h in any game and don't like it, quit and play another one. There are so many great games out there, don't bother with stuff that you only mildly enjoy.

if you have to ask then the answer is it won't get good. if you aren't enjoying it then it's not for you and that's OK. you don't have to like every single game.

<-- my face every time these kind of threads are made.

People should always start the game on Normal and if that's too much then drop it to Easy. Easy nowadays is just walking simulator.... And even back then.

It gets good right away and stays that way. Seems like it's not for you, you're not gonna hit any point that suddenly makes you love it.

Good news is Pittsburgh is when the game really starts. Bad news Naughty Dogs games don't age well really.
To be honest I have tons of more fun with the oldest ND games than the latest. Not to say TLOU2 is bad to play but I'm literally annoyed of the dull moments of some area as walk and talk for hours, looks the cool object, pet the dog to fit their "narrative obsession" in the game. At least in the past you can avoid it. Now there are whole sessions about this unfunny bullshit.

Im basing that off the uncharted collection tbh. The games were fun but technically they look a bit dated in their game mechanics (not artistically). 2 held up via nostalgia. 4 and LL are still ok as they are recent

ND games aren't never been particularly original and they copy and paste their mechanics here and there. But I have no problems with them and they give me tons of fun even today. What's phenomenal by them is the fusion of the perfection of the controls with the gameplay mechanics.
Anyway the only game with a deeper gameplay is the first Uncharted. People hated it because is very basic but indeed I found it one of best TPS in the market and even better of the sequel in some ideas (as the combat system with combo)

You've played 20 minutes of it on easy. No shit you don't like it. Try taking some ADD meds, turn the difficulty back up and keep going.

I personally struggled with the controls a lot (on PS3, aiming never felt right to me), but the narrative was good enough for me to see it through. I say play it a bit more, and if the dynamic between Ellie and Joel doesn't do it for you, play something else.

I never understood the hype behind ND games.

Uncharted 1 was good, but not great or an instant classic, just pretty good. About a quarter of the way through Uncharted 2 I had the same feeling and just didn’t bother to finish it. It was okay, but again, nothing amazing. I felt my time would be better spent on a game that is actually great.

TLoU was the same experience, but a little better. Story was good, graphics looked great, gameplay was fun... but for some reason I just didn’t care to finish it. It was good, but that’s it. Just “good”. It’s like a movie that you enjoy, but you could take it or leave it and if you don’t finish it... meh, you’ll get back to it one day.

I haven’t bothered to play any of their other games. It’s probably just not for you OP. Put it down and find something that makes you say “damn this game is awesome!”

You mean the baby at farm stuff? How is it conservative? That's just called "normal functional family" :D Or does "woke" = "having three husbands, one wife and an open relationship"? :D

Like i said... when i develop a game and i tell my character designers to create some "Females" and i get this based on their personal views....

...then i would ask them "How creating boys has anything to do with my request for females?".

After that they would get a second chance before i fire them or i have to hire new designers.

Never. Stealth has been done better by Hitman and Splinter Cell, cutscenes done better by Kojima, and post apocalypse has been done better by Fallout and Wasteland games. Where it really fails is the lack of cars I mean come on. The npcs just stand there and don't have quests or dialogue options and what gives with no mini-games? Why can't Joel shoot some pool with his hobo pals between rounds of giving handys to the guards for cans of Spam. So lame. Nothing to do in the world and everything breaks my immersion.

In short, TLOU is a 4/10 game at best and never should have been a GOTY winner. So much cut content like casinos, planes and no restaurants in the game. Pfft.

I kid. It really isn't a game for me. I get the appeal. I also did hate TLOU and think Druckmann is a pretentious douchebag hack. But that last gameplay scene was very powerful I cannot deny.

It doesn't. If you don't like what you've seen thus far then you won't like it after. The main reason to "play" this game is for the story, but I dislike these really theatrically written & acted games. They did the same shit with the new GoW, it feels so fake & annoying. 🤢

I cry about SonyGaf from my chair in Redmond, WA
The story is great and that's what you should buy the game for.
The gameplay is very bland and boring, so if you can't stand that the game is not for you.
I really liked the story myself, but I couldn't get through the gameplay and that the game is only story driven.
