GAF Throwback: Aloy looks a little off.......

Maybe they made the mouth bigger for animation reasons.

Maybe, I’m just pointing out the differences. Personally, I think she’s fine. I’d have made a few tweaks if it were my character, but I don’t really get how people can be hot and bothered by a model one way or another. Even if I think a model is ugly, I can just say it and it might impact my enjoyment of the game, but I don’t get all worked up over it.

Tell me, did GoT's Jin Sakai get any threads like this because he wasn't some bewitching Greek adonis like Mass Effect's protagonist or some husky, grizzled hunk like Geralt?
What are you talking about? Jin Sakai is basically a 9+/10 as far as masculine japanese men go. I would argue the animated character looks even better than the original.

She looks like a chubby toddler. They went crazy with her cheeks proporpions, small forhead skull and wide chin.

She looks good in some angles though.

LMAO was that the story? I skipped a lot of the cut scenes in the quest for the plat and just enjoyed the eye candy.
It worked for me on that level too - but I was really disappointed in how the story turned out, because the game did have so much to like otherwise.

At least we don't have a Halo Infinite mess on our hands. A few tweaks to the cheeks/jawline and everything would be fine.

Hey Guerilla Games - I will consult for FREE. Just shoot me a message. :messenger_beaming:

The left* one feels closer and POV, the right one seems like zoomed in from a bit far distance. Even human eyes work that way as it's just physics as the closer part will look bigger as well. She's this close, maybe that's why he spat the water:

From this angle I think she looks normal.

Better, but i agree with others who've said her shitty haircut is a big part of the problem too

The haircut is part of her character — as much as the fez hat created some distinction in Bayonetta 1 perhaps. For me, I appreciate the uniqueness. I appreciate slight imperfections in hair, face, body type etc. These things add to the world for me. (Probably the reason I didn't have any problem with Selene in Returnal) The issue I had with Aloy's face shape has more to do with the inconsistencies between the first and second game. Having played the first for 50+ hours, my brain has come to expect certain facial characteristics. In some of the shots of HFW, the character model failed to align with these expectations and created an unfamiliar distraction.

On the one hand, yes that was the story.

On the other hand, the Nora are a group of tribals led by women (matriarchs). At the start of the game you're thinking that it'll be quite feminist-preachy in this regard and that the tribe will be a utopia, but the matriarchs are shown to be utter fucking morons and Aloy basically rejects them and their idiocy. The person who made her into a hero is her "dad". The smartest and most competent person in the game by miles (who rescues Aloy on the equivalent of a white fucking horse, lol) is a guy.

So the negative depictions weren't all just one way.

I thought the only really "woke" part of the story was the rainbow coalition that the savage tribes were. After all those years after zero dawn it would just be a bunch of mixed race people. They were clearly trying too hard to display diversity there. Add that to the terrible facial animations and the dialogue in early parts of the game was pretty jarring.

I agree that from certain angles Aloy looks fine. 3/4 to head on perspectives don't look nearly as good regardless of distance. I remember the father from Killzone Shadowfall having similar issues — an overly rounded jawline that, when combined with the shape of his skull and his hairline, created some odd characteristics from certain angles within cutscenes.

Jesus fuck, this thread is legitimately disgusting. The forced beauty standards are making me puke; it was the same ordeal as with Returnal. Just because the protagonist isn't your run-of-the-mill slut clad in spandex doesn't mean her standing as a character should suffer in any way shape or form. There are more pressing and important methods for a character to endear themselves to the player, the most prominent being the quality of writing. Are you guys weeping over the fact that Aloy doesn't meet your inequitable standards of beauty because your fear the lack of coom material on rule34? Grow the fuck up. She looks absolutely fine, and picking out the most uncharitable of frames to denigrate her doesn't serve your concerns at all. The funny thing is, I never saw any complaints about Ghost of Tsushima's Jin Sakai failing to fulfill the pretty boy aesthetic, but when it concerns a female, it suddenly becomes an issue.🤦‍♂️
This is your brain on soy folks.

On topic, some people like playing pretty people and that's 100% okay. I also liked the part were you insinuate attractive people are sluts simply for being attractive, very progressive of you. A+ poster, real asset to the community.

It's also a problem with cameras as well. When you look at something from down with a camera they look extremely off from what you see with your naked eye. And the closer the object is the bigger the nearest spot is made than normal (jawline/nose).

I think those extremely expensive setups for modeling should be ditched and revamped with one camera with high photo burst of like 1000fps circulating around the character with the most accurate focal length and most perfect lens with another lens for 3D modeling, like 3D sensor, for auto correction. And further more the modeler should know how to put more time in fixing the final in-game model to represent the real one and correct any potential errors.

This is an expensive one, but seems extremely accurate as you really don't wanna take long because humans can't stand still for too long while keeping natural expression. Maybe that's why some NPC's look weird and laughable when the model tries to hold his/her eyes open:

This is a poorman's one:

Also the Xbox 360 Kinect with a rotating base for the model can make great results:

She does look to a put on a bit of weight in the face for somebody that runs, climbs, swims, fights, walks everywhere, And doesn’t have a car, or TV, or video games, or junk food.

I think she should look more ripped, but the usual suspects will cry again and make Abby comparison.

I agreed, she should be more ripped. However, I’d expect something more like this than Abby.

How am I supposed to finish the game with that rock-solid butt? Distracting as fuck.

Also Abby is 100% on steriods, like some athletic men and women.

Yup.

I think your solution makes a lot of sense. Given my limited 3d modeling experience, I can't imagine how stressful it must be to account for every lighting combination, camera proximity and cutscene use case. I have spent months on faces re-sculpting and re-rigging simply because of a minor visual issue from an angle that would very infrequently be used. Probably why I never tried to make a career out of it — too much stress from the subjectivity tied to a visual medium like video game design.

At any rate, I have always thought that Aloy is an incredibly well diesigned/well written character and if Guerilla really wanted to resolve these minor visual qualms (and they are minor) there is a relatively straightforward path to doing so. If they don't, whatever, I will be playing HFW on day 1.

I can’t argue with the distraction part. I really like the CrossFit look. You can look built, but still feminine unlike the steroid look. Abby would seem to be on roids to me too. I personally don’t have any outrage over her, just think they made her a roid head like you said.

Agree with you, I think going the steroid route makes sense as well in that chaotic situation. You need to be as strong as possible to survive.

Because we are paying $$$. imagine going to a strip club and the manager tells you that if you don't pay $500 for this fat ugly one arm 60 year old woman to dance on your lap then you are immature and sexist and should just go jerk off to porn instead.
Why compare video games to a strip club?

Also why not go to a different strip club instead of staying at the current one and complaining?

Problem is games aren't strip clubs. Also you may need to spend more time on porn games to be fully satisfied. :messenger_winking_tongue:

Agreed, until you suddenly die of a heart attack. I get it though. I don’t have any complaints. Honestly, Aloy really isn’t bad either, like you just think she might be in better shape given her lifestyle.

Sigh. You never disappoint internet.

May I suggest getting a real life sexual partner so you dont have to complain about not being able to fap to a female videogame character.

Jesus fucking christ people.

Yes its ok wanting to play or look at attractive characters, but some people are going way over the fucking line with their opinions. But yeah sure, dont play the game because you dont like her jaw line. To each their own.

This is a screenshot i took when playing Horizon. I remember people calling her ugly back then too, but I think she always looked pretty.

The pictures in the OP dont do her character model justice. It's a first person FOV shot so it looks a bit weird. She looks fine in other shots.

I think what they have done here is gone back to her original character model. This is from the very first reveal of Horizon Zero Dawn at E3 2015.

I am not a fan of devs making female characters look ugly to model them after average looking women so as to not set unrealistic expectations. ND is especially guilty of it with the awful fucking model of Abby, making Chloe look ugly, and doing their hardest to make Ellie and Dina look mediocre. All the while making Drake look like a supermodel.

But this doesnt seem to be the case here. I think they just want her to look like her original model. I actually liked her portrayal in Horizon. She is considered very bangable in the world of Horizon. Every man she meets falls in love with her. The king tries to fuck her. Her sexuality isnt exploited but it isnt hidden away either like it is in most games where women are treated like men with tits.

She is still very feminine unlike Abby who looks like a man.
