Flight Sim '21 (Xbox) Review Thread

Put a podcast on and hit the sky.

It's my go to game if I want to unwind for a couple of hours.

Although I don't know how it would feel with a controller in hand on longer flights instead of a flight stick.
what's the best stick to get for this?

Reviews are looking really good. This is the one Xbox exclusive that really makes me wish I could play it. It looks so damn cool.

I have a Thrustmaster T1600m and it's been perfect but it depends on what planes you think you will be flying the most. For the larger airliners something with a yoke will be better.

I like the mid size and smaller planes so the T1600m is good for those and I also use it in Elite Dangerous.

NO PAIN TRANCE CONTINUE

Don't you dare side eye my optimism!
4k 30fps on series x
1080p 30fps on series s

there's no 60fps it seems but you don't need it for this kind of game. i'm playing at 30fps on pc.

There it is, I was remembering wrong, yeah 1080p vs 4k. Thanks!

30fps on both and it's one of those games that doesn't really benefit much from higher framerates. A lot of people play at 30fps on PC as well outside of VR.

Thanks. That's weird because I think it's a game where you look around all the time, be it in cockpit view or third person, and 30fps in my experience is pretty straining on my eyes. Then again it's mostly skies and clouds in your horizontal periphery that enables a smoother looking experience I guess... Anyways it isn't a dealbreaker at all so yeah..

Because it is, it's not a title for an average Joe, it's a simulator, it's in the name even, it targets a specific group of people/enthusiasts, and once the visual impression wears off, once people check out how their hometowns look in the game etc. I really don't expect many XB players to stick with the title for longer, people who are really into this stuff have already been playing it for year on their PCs, with throttles, pedals, VR googles and what's not. Because really, there isn't much gameplay in it other than some sightseeing, the franchise is decades old now, for someone who wasn't into it already there won't be anything new in FS2020.
Sounds like most PlayStation exclusives.

There are a lot, I mean a lot of people that have never tried Flight Sim and will now be able to try it due to it not only being on console but on Game Pass as well. This will open the door to a whole new market of people that would never have even tried Flight Sim in the past. I expect Flight Sim to be huge all gen long.

This is shaping up to be everything I had hoped for when it was announced to be coming to consoles.

Now I need to figure out how I’m going to set up a decent control setup in my living room in front of my LGCX. I know she’ll roll her eyes but I think my wife will be okay if I set up a small card table in front of the OLED for a platform for some good flight controls. Need to start researching.

It is crazy that they are able to playe earlier than paying customers. I think if you paid for the premium edition it should unlock a few days early for you
Like it or not, and as sad as it is, lots of these people actually do have a lot of influence over a lot of the general gaming population. They hype a game up, even though they're paid to, and it'll bring in more sales.

I'm going to check out Los Angeles tomorrow and see if I can find my building. It's quite distinctive and the the tallest one one in a mostly single-family residential neighborhood.

P.S. for all you flight sim pros I want to see more gorgeous videos of this game.

Tough. Its true.

Flight Sims have been around forever and all this is, is a prettier version of the same thing. The appeal beyond the shiny is exactly the same niche market that it was 38 years ago, and it still barely qualifies as a "videogame".

There's nothing at all wrong with that, but if you are arguing that its got any sort of mass-market appeal beyond visual and technical novelty you're tripping. In that respect its ideally suited to Gamepass because people will download to gawp at the graphics and show it off to their friends, but its going to be forgotten or deleted by most users just as quickly.

Sorry, but unless you're one of a small but dedicated community of flight enthusiasts its basically an elaborate screensaver. Pilot Wings it aint.

And here I was thinking "its not a real game"

/s
Technically you are correct: It's not a game, it's a simulator. Real life pilots and aviation enthusiasts have trained on this and other simulators (X-Plane, Prepar3D) for decades. The whole simmer/aviation community sets itself apart from the gaming community.

Yep all those playstation exclusives where there "isn't much gameplay." That's definitely how those games are created and reviewed.

You know, it's quite alright if someone wants to be xbox-only, or ps-only, or for some reason switch-only but ...

The lying and straw man arguments consistently come from one side it seems, and it's getting close to kinda pathetic at this point. There are some members in particular who like to say PS games have "bad gameplay" and then pick another particular platform not exactly tearing up the release charts right now. Or for the last several years.

Again, it's great you have your favorites. Everyone does. But the straight up lying about the competition is just sad. It screams of massive insecurity in your own favorites.

Btw, this game looks great. :messenger_smiling_with_eyes:

Pushing your agenda and subjective opinion as fact in this case is ridiculous.

The only thing that is fact is that you're upset that people are excited for an Xbox game.

This is the Flight sim to end Flight sims.
The whole Earth is there for you to discover in beautiful UHD.

If that doesn't excite you that's fine but don't try to pretend other people can't be excited for this.
There are plenty of reasons to be excited.

It’s not a “game game”

Is this a counter-argument or an advert?

"the flight sim to end flight sims" ? WTF.

I never said you shouldn't be excited, I just said its appeal is to a niche, not a mass-market audience the same as any other transport sim. And the only reason its getting so much hype is because its useful demonstration of a bunch of MS' technologies.

Its comical to me, we're on a forum where the delay caused by watching a cut-scene is often excoriated as not being "respectful of people's time". How are people going to react to a game where the overwhelming majority and point of the experience is simply moving point-to-point above vast and admittedly beautifully detailed landscapes?

How many Xbox fans bashed Death Stranding for this exact reason?

It's appeal might be niche but with a console release as well as it being available on Game Pass this should open this game up to many more people. There are many niche genres by the way and most people don't ever even try them.

A) I wish people would stop with the "this game doesn't respect my time" cringe. As if they'd be doing something so much more worth their time if they weren't playing vidya.
B) What does Death Stranding have to do with MSFS2020? Literally nobody thinks this is anything but a flight sim.

I read the exact same downplaying in an Ascent thread last week.
Seeing a pattern here on Xbox exclusives - and its just getting started.
Gonna be a rough gen for yall.
