Why do people get over protective for their favorite console?

Insecurity, FOMO, persecution complex, tribalism, self-doubt, paranoia, and good old-fashioned childishness- all ugly things which conspire to make idiots on the internet jump at the chance to make their one investment in gaming matter.

We've seen more of it than usual over the last year because it's early in the new consoles' lifespan, and everything's at stake.

After 30 plus years in the game I can say with confidence Nintendo is the best in the business. Followed by Sony with their interactive movies. MS isn’t too far behind in 3rd with their subscription service, shooters and racers. Stranded on a deserted island gimme Nintendo.

But to answer your question, I’d say it’s a hobby fans, myself included, have invested a lot of time in and it’s fun to poke fun at the “opposition”. Kinda like sports fans cheering their favorite team. Playful, nothing too serious. I always end up with all consoles each gen.

They’re childish, immature, and not very smart. They’ve tied a gaming brand and the company who makes it to their own self. If you criticise that console they take it as a criticism of them. It usually comes from only having one of the options available and not being in a position to have them all, so they defend it as the “right” decision and the best console. They don’t want to admit they made the wrong decision (or more likely their parents did).

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
Usually to protect something they like, brand loyalty etc, people do the same with Phones, trainers, movies...everything
I say let you do you, and I'll do me.
Don't really care if someone is having it as good or not as I'm having it and I don't need to prove anything to justify it or convince them to join in my choice or opinions.
Because it only matters to me
When someone tells me they've played the best game or seen the best film, slept with the hottest girl, etc
I believe them, from their prospective
I do like winding them up though..

But this
Because unlike PCs
this
They got to justify their purchase in the face of all the other brands that might be better.

Oh wait, it's typically console gamers who only do this.
Edit 😂 oh wow and this

You'd think cars would be the biggest battleground on earth. Different prices involving giant money, performance, and car sites rate the actual models how good or bad they are. And there's a general trend in each class of car or truck, which are the better brands and models.

If anything, you'd think everyone would justify their car purchase in order to not look like they wasted $40,000 on a car rated 6th in it class, while whomever owns the top rated models would be rubbing it in as the other guy wasted tons of money on a shitty ranked car.

I dont see it. Never have in real life. But have seen people bring up $300 console wars in real life.
Maybe it was where and when I grew up. Friends and I were big into cars and we all had our favorites. It was mostly the GM/Ford/Mopar rivalry. This was before imports became the craze.

Some people are just that impotent in real life. And they gotta make up for it somehow.

There's a reason we call them fanboys and not fanmen. And it's because they don't have any manhood.

At the root of this idiotic behavior lies primarily the human ego, and the inability to accept choices other than one's own. Even, and perhaps especially, when these kinds of people are sufficiently aware that, in some respects, their choices were not completely justified. The inability to come to terms with the consequences of their own choices ties people between satisfaction (when circumstances justify them) and aggression (when they don't).

It is no longer the tribalism that was once the basis of survival. It is sheer self-love, an illusion of superiority and belonging, grown out of complexes, the need to rationalize one's choices, the reluctance to go beyond the comfort zone.

Humans are a tribal species. It is very natural to develop an "insider\we" versus "outsider\them" mentality. You can see it in almost all aspects of life. The cooks hate the wait staff, people argue over vehicle brands. It's just what people are like.

Tribalism.
Calling fanboys 'tribalist' is a bit like calling them 'warriors' lol. We aren't exactly talking about Conan types here.

The more accurate analogy is of a bunch of medieval peasants fighting for their landlord because he allows them to stay on his lands. And the only reason they haven't heard of prima nocta is because no woman would ever have them. If someone needs to defend a $500 console then he probably isn't very successful in life.

im aware that there is a ton of Nintendo ones. But because idc about Pokemon or Smash Bros....im luckily able to avoid seeing the vast majority of it.

Xbox just doesn't have that many. You have a handful on youtube. And you will see a spattering here and there. But its just not that prevalent.

Xbox has plenty of fanboys. You are an Xbox fan so it is harder for you to see, but yeah.....there are plenty.

i have no clue why playstation fanboys, are the way they are. Brain damage is the only way i could understand why u look at any xbox related tweet and the replies are just crazy ppl posting "xbox sucks"..."playstation better" etc.

I luv luv luv PS2. Think its the best game console of all time. And that didn't cause me to slurp playstation and hate anything non playstation. I grew up on NES....and still like Nintendo but i play it the least. I have no nostalgia for Xbox. I nvr owned anything Xbox until i was in my 20's. I have never cared much about Xbox games. But its my most used current console and i think xbox has had the best console the last couple gens.

i would like to think that my line of thinking, is the norm. As far as liking everything. But idk. I do think online sentiment effects real world purchases. Because Xbox does have a slightly negative connotation. Maybe even Nintendo to some degree. U never see anyone in real life, saying playstation sucks or anything. or questioning why you would get a playstation. unless its a pc nerd ;)

This forum is nothing on consolewars. I remember Gametrailers forums, now that was a battlefield.

yup, this is nothing, old school console wars were glorious, Sega vs Nintendo, Sega vs Sony, Sony vs Nintendo, those were good old days....today's nothing but boring xbots vs ponies pixel counting......even Phil almost had to apologize when he said ES6 will be xbox exclusive.....back in the old days, Sony/Nintendo/MS taunt each other when they scored exclusives

today is lame....millennial snowflakes turn everything lame

Bro you... nevermind, carry on

It's kind of funny; you no longer have to defend a console that sells 100 million. Even the Wii.
But you have to. Because you know that two generations of failure back to back would kill any console.

There is only war if death was on the cards. And there had been many casualties.

I am amused that so many people in this thread are claiming there is nothing to fight about. That it is all childish nonsense. There is PLENTY to fight about, every console is always in danger and as such there is no peace. You might not care enough to join, but for the participants there are real consequences.

Sure, in the end the fans have very little ability to influence the outcome. Consoles usually die in a manner outside the fan's control. But the anxiety is 100% real and mocking them is just not right.

“I buy therefore I am” once you wear this mindset you feel obligated to defend your decision to invest time and money in A over B because most people can’t afford both A and B.

The bandwagon effect is another. Most people will veer into the direction of what’s popular today.

I don't think people really care honestly.

I get more upset when people praise hot garbage like Destiny.

Personally I was a fanboy back when I could only afford one system.

The second I could afford multiple ones I stopped being overly defensive (if anything it made more critical of all of them)

Some poor kids have a better relationship with their gaming console than they do with their parental figures. Those gets get older.

I think a better question is, why is everyone so upset by it?

Ignore it. Let them fight and shitpost. They're useful idiots. They do most of the complaining that gets first parties to act, and they're a visual indicator that hardware has support. At this point, if a system doesn't have fanboys, I'd be worried for it.

Halo Infinite would not have had quite the concerted effort to improve it, if it hadn't been savaged after the first reveal. Thank Sony fanboys for doing most of the lifting.

Conversely, we wouldn't have seen the high quality line up of PS4 first party games, if not for fanboys putting a massive dent in the PS3's market perception, that forced Sony's back to the wall and made them rethink their place. Thank the XBox fanboys for engendering the Wii60 movement in the generation prior, which made people question the assumption that PlayStation was a given. They did more amongst the discourse to disrupt Sony's conceit than '599' ever did.

Personally, I'd rather have diversified platforms that are competitive, down to their audiences, than have Geoff Keighley bring out the first party representatives to hold hands and be 'ooh-friends!' on stage. The altruism behind it is fake, and it leads to a dead market if the companies aren't going for each others' throats. Fanboys help buttress that competitive development, which in turn forces first parties to do better than the third parties, if they want market share. Of course, if you're PC only, I understand why you just plain don't get it, but it wouldn't be the first concept regarding consoles.

The Champions League isn't good because everyone wants to be friends and share the trophy. Now imagine how flat the games would be, if those teams had no vocal support in the stands.

They're a necessary evil. Rabid fanbases help quality assurance.

If you want Sony to put the effort in to making say, a Tsushima, best let them get on with feeding the monster in the basement. A bunch of passives won't demand quite the same meal.

Its just gaming machine, which you will throw it away once you are done having with it. You wasting all these hours protecting it, and mocking other people. Its borderline unhealthy, and weird.

So why do people go overboard with it?

For me personally, I just play it, and mind my business. I have real life to worry about. I am not wasting my time arguing with stranger, with my console.

Its little bit hard to understand these behaviors.

Mental illness. Lack of money. Strange obsession with a corporation that doesn’t even know they exist.

Take your pick.
