The most popular game console on Black Friday 2021 isn't the PlayStation 5 — it's the $300 Xbox Series S (due to availability)

The popularity of the Switch must tie your brain in knots.
Switch’s popularity could very well be tied to its handheld nature. After all, the switch lite can’t even be hooked into the TV.

This is the first Gen in two decades where Nintendo didn’t offer a dedicated handheld system. Ds is the best selling gaming system off all time. 3ds was also very popular. The switch essentially replaced them.

Not just availability, but price is always a factor.

Pretty sure for Black Friday deals, the best selling TVs are probably models that cost less than $1000 as opposed to awesome OLEDs on sale, but still cost $2000.

I wouldnt be surprised if the biggest selling TVs come from the $400 RCA territory.

When it comes to electronics price is a small factor. People will spend money they don’t have to get the best version phone, TV and console.

Let’s be honest if this shortage wasn’t a issue the disc PS5, Series X and Nintendo Switch would out sell the Series S by a land slide.

I think people in this thread think everyone is out to hate on the Series S but it’s really just the reality that the Xbox Series X will never hit it’s potential from a tech standpoint because of the Series S and that’s a fact.

Money means nothing to a company that is trillion dollar. They need healthy base for their console. Games which will attract those people.

You dont buy something to get more money. You buy them, to have future investment. MS didnt buy bethesda, because they needed quick cash. They bought them, because it gives them new IPs for their new service. Same thing for the studios they bought.
IP is a king in content world. And you need new or existing IPs to get those content.

So your original point was Microsoft have seen no return on their purchases, then it's money means nothing and they don't need quick cash? Talk about wrapping yourself in knots.

I never said they needed quick cash, I said they were receiving income from their purchases from the games I mentioned, this is undeniable fact.
I also said they would know the development roadmap of the companies they purchased as anyone who spent millions and billions of dollars on a purchase would, again another fact.

None of this is difficult.

I'm sorry and I say this with all due respect, but this is just a straigth up misrepresentation of what the system offers. Saying that the system renders at 4k because it can run a few games at 4k is misleading. The total amount of games that run at 4k is 6 and half of those are simple indie games. Not even the dashboard runs at 4k. There's a decent amount that runs at 1440p and the overwhelming majority of games run at 1080p.
There is a very meaningful difference between saying that the series s outputs 1080p and its typical rendering resolution. That's all we are saying.

There is no real reason to not include that distinction for accuracy

Only if your game or engine is CPU bound. FS2020 is heavily CPU bound. Core gameplay usually is more RAM which XSS is limited on too. So it all depends on your engine and when you started developing your game what you targeted.
Can you point to any modern games that won't run on the XSS because of its GPU? What titles run based solely on GPU performance? There are tons of PCs out there that have GPUs even less capable than the XSS. Those systems will also have to be taken into account at least for Xbox titles.

CPU bottlenecks especially last generation were the biggest problem for game developers. GPU performance scales CPU not so much. Thus far XSS has had numerous titles running at 60fps and is doing better than other more expensive platforms with 120fps titles.

The XSS is targeting 1440p at the most and 1080p in typical cases. How much ram do you need to run games at 1080p resolution? The X1 and PS4 ran lots of games at 1080p and they had even less ram than XSS. Again the XSS is leaps and bounds more performant than last generations base consoles.

It still has the capability even if it's not going to for major 3d titles. There's a misconception/lie that is often thrown around online that the system is hard locked to output at 1440p max, no matter what. That's not the case as select titles do run at 4k or above 1440p, which is what was originally being pointed out.
It also never gets answered but when the PS5 and XSX to a much lesser extent doesn't run a game at 4k no one bats an eye but when the XSS doesn't run a game at 1440p MS lied to its customers. So crazy the standard the budget box is held to.

Summer would be ideal for them. As long as they dont release close to starfield. Who ever is releasing a game close to that month, is on life support. While starfield might not be on playstation system, the amount of headline it will get, will disrupt any new marketing games.

Do people know grounded exist? The game is made by small team. Its like indie game at this point.
I think whilst summer might be ideal for GoW, personally I don't see it. My prediction is Q3/4.

Grounded gets really good reviews on Steam, it feels like a SoT in terms of the people who play it really like it. I don't know how much marketing it will get. Its not a flagship/AAA title but I think it counts as a meaningful release.

Do we even have games that are exclusive 4k? most games are tailored for 1080p. your 4k console wont do anything, if the game is upscaled to 4k. you need native 4k games to feel that 4k experience. or else, you are stuck with upscaled 4k.
like returnal, it’s more or less 1080p then upscaled to 4k and it looks great.
netflix, hulu, amazon prime, disney plus.
Who the hell uses disc movies these days?

SS has gamepass. It fulfils what the console is designed for. Primary gamepass console. This isnt playstation console, where you need to buy 1st party games. Xbox is covering those people with gamepass, since their 1st party games are available on that service.
you just nailed why Microsoft were so forward thinking with game pass and the series s. 90 percent of people don’t care about disks or the poorer quality a stream brings over them, they want convenience. Series S is the perfect console for this.
sure, there is cut down vegetation and A lower resolution but 90 percent of the people playing fifa, cod and madden couldn’t give a shit this year.

its the perfect Cheap first party third party box.

and I bet everyones arguing over this then Nintendo will step in on the npds like “waddup mutha fukkaz”

Yup. It was a smart bet. It must have faced a lot of internal resistance by some n counters as they must have imagined Wii + DS sales and thought that a single console to relax both could have been a mistake… but betting your farm of catching a lighting in a bottle twice each generation was a worse point of view IMHO so the bean counters lost. Not sustainable for the company.

Switch is like Schrödinger’s cat of consoles in terms of duality and its nature being exactly what the argument requires it to be ;).

This is gonna skew the uk sales chart even more. Just looking at very website and it’s on 100+ sold in the last 48 hours so it’s obviously selling well. I guess MS have found a saviour in the series dearly on while the cost to build it’s big brother combines with the shortages is proving to be tough.

I was just hoping there would be some deals on as I wanted to pick one up in the uk.

So why can’t it run games in native 4K like the Xbox one X that was released in 2017?

I am sure Phil has some of you on pay roll in this thread … 😆
Because it has less RAM, tailored for native 1440p output. The GPU is more powerful in some aspects, and the CPU is miles ahead of the One X.
It's sold as a 1440p device, and it does exactly that. For the vast majority of people, that's absolutely fine.

This garbage again? So is the ps5 going to hit its potential? Because you can bet your ass 99% chance they are developing concurrent pc versions of all thier new games (even if they are releasing them delayed) plus they have a ton that are even being made for ps4. Ms also has concurrent pc versions being made with lower spec than one fixed format (Series s) that is actually more powerfull than low end pc. So as far as series X being held back by the series S being "a fact", that's a complete fiction created here on these boards.

Is there a reason you didn't mention the X1S? Just because you refused to acknowledge its existence doesn't mean it isn't the true predecessor. You might not know this but the X1S sold more than the X1X so the only wishful thinking is that developers will start making games with maximum raytracing effects ignoring large segments of potential customers. That would make no business sense seeing how most people's gaming hardware cannot run the effect at all.

The XSS is not a successor to the X1X no matter how many people keep saying it. At least you'll be happy to know that the XSS can run effects even the X1X could not. It's a fantastic upgrade over the X1X and X1S for the CPU alone. You shouldn't worry about the XSS right now regardless. Developers haven't even used all the features of the system let alone maximized it. This generation is just getting started and improvements will continue to be made.

This is a good point, the vast majority of Xbox owners will be upgrading from an Xbox One or Xbox One S, it's a pretty massive upgrade to a Series S, the simple move to 60/120fps is going to be enlightening for those who have been playing at 30fps for years. Then add in the loading speeds, FPS boost for old games and the fact the base Xbox One didn't even support HDR.

People are happy to buy a SeriesS most likely for a number of reasons.

Imo SeriesS is a calculated and clever move. A 2nd console option, impulse buy, family console, budget console, not other consoles in stock, gamepass portal, Xbox exclusives portal.

Whatever the reason Xbox is happy.

Its certainly a different approach instead of going toe to toe with the competition (they are doing that too), its like a "why not both 🤷" strategy

That's just not true. Otherwise these shitty BF TVs they sell year after year wouldn't sell out constantly.

People are very price sensitive and the fact that they are willing to buy these lesser rate panels and fight each other for them proves it.

Good point.

The upgrade from X1 to XSS is bigger then the upgrade of X1X to XSX.

X1 to XSS
4.5x gpu
4-5xCPU
1.8x Ram bandwidth
1.6x Ram for games

X1X to XSX
3x gpu
4x cpu
1.7x ram bandwidth
1.5x ram for games.

In defense of the consumer the PS4 Pro sucked , but back on topic lol price is king. Normal people just want to play the games and will take the easiest path to that.

All of a sudden, sales don't matter.

Yet again, sales aren't a metric of demand because the system involved is Series S.

Say the sales are in part due to supply, okay, but there aren't nearly enough people around to buy a $300 system just because it's there, if they otherwise have no desire for it.

The downplaying is real; just a general commentary.

There's no downplaying.

Many Xbox fans don't want to accept the fact that the Xbox Series S is readily available compared to the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5.

According to Adobe’s Digital Economy Index data (first highlighted by Business Insider), the cheaper Series S outside both PS5, Switch OLED Model and the more expensive Xbox Series X during the biggest holiday sale day of the year.

Adobe claims its data comes from analysing 1 trillion visits to retail sites, in addition to surveying over 1,000 retailers on their most popular items.

If accurate, a key element of Series S’s popularity is likely that, unlike the highly sought-after PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, Series S has been widely available to purchase during Black Friday week. At the time of publishing, it’s still in stock at many retailers.

1. It's widely available during Black Friday week
2. It's still in stock at many retailers.

No one can really dispute this. The only thing people are going to say is, "you're downplaying it" Because they don't want to accept the truth.

Series S, most in demand item this back Friday. Likely to be most demand for Christmas as well.

Xbox One RAM bandwidth is 68.3GB/s.
Xbox Series S RAM bandwidth is 224GB/s.

I calculated it based on an early eurogamer interview where the xbox fellow said the real world performance of the X1s DDR3 + esram was about 150gb/s , so thats total bandwidth for games + os and the XSS has a total bandwidth of 280gb/s for os + games.

No one is denying that lack of XSX + ps5 stock will have some effect, however no one is forced to buy an XSS, there still has to be some good demand if people are willing to buy one and not wait for stock of the bigger brothers.

It's not about XSX and the PS5 having "some effect". It's probably selling at the same pace as it was because it's it was available at the time the article was posted.

This means it's dominating compared to XSX and PS5 because the others are not even available to purchase.

Here is a video of a real game developer talking about how the Xbox Series S presents more limitations outside of just resolution.

Every system has limitations, your ignoring the entire point, here's controls hardware minimum specs they had to get it to run on.
All he says in that interview is its not as simple as lowering the resolution, so what, duh. Do you think maybe they had to do something other than just lower the resolution to get it to run on a gtx780?

"The minimum CPU and GPU requirements for Control are set at the Intel Core i5-4690 and an AMD FX-4350 alongside either a GeForce GTX 780 or a Radeon R9 280X. In addition to these hardware specs, your rig will also need at least 8 GB of RAM"

Let me spell it out for you slowly again.
Series S is not the weakest system they are making games for. The specs above are considerably lower than the power inside the seties S. Explain to me please how them having to code the game for one fixed more powerfull platform vs thousands of weaker combinations is somehow harder and dragging anything down? Oh wait, you can't, and I'm trying equally hard not to laugh at your post.

He said it would not be a problem though. It would be a bigger problem if they had to downport to the SeriesS, like gen8 games being made for the switch.
But if they make games with the seriesS in mind it wont be a problem.

I wish these devs would talk about any "limitations" the seriesS would entail on next gen development. Because judging by next gen games so far they all look very scalable, so any difference the SeriesS would have would be just small visual differences (to the layman), besides resolution.

Roadmap is good. But you need games asap. Industries like this dont wait for future games. You will leave your customers restless.

One of the main reason X1 failed badly, was the decline of the 1st party games. All we saw for this gen right now, is repeat of old IP, and 1 Kickstart game.

It will improve in the future, but as of now, I dont see anything new from MS.

The thing is Xbox does not have much “built from the ground up” next gen games to judge right now.

We will have a better idea next year when more full next gen games are out like Starfield and Stalker 2.

The medium and flight sim.

But even if we look at games like rift apart which has 3 different modes, scalability is rather varried.

As for starfield and stalker 2, I expect similar differences as FH5.
A lower resolution and slightly lower detail in things like tesalation and other settings.
I dont think a games vision will be shunted by the SeriesS.

The only real limitation we have for the S, is rtx on and off. Not alot of systems can do that.

The Series S, especially with Game Pass is a great choice to enter the new gen.
NO IF YOU WANT ANYTHING LESS THAN 120FPS AT 8K YOU ARE WORSE THAN HITLER

Also I think the xss is benefitting from a lack of last gen consoles, if someone just wants the cheapest way to play games, the xss is a good option

Though with skus separated it would be nice to know the top selling console, did the xss carry Xbox past switch+lite+old or do those 3 total exceed xsx and xss

Also if the xss can do well in the US this holiday they ms might have a fighting chance there (though we all know Sony has really been pumping units to the US to secure the fifa cod gta casuals)

They would know the development roadmap when they purchased the studios, no point in rushing the games when this Xmas you have millions of people playing your first party releases in Forza Horizon 5 and Halo Infinite, easily the best first party line up this Xmas. There is no comparison with the X1 release schedule as we know for a fact with just what's announced the line up is stacked, there will be more we don't know about.

In 12 months we've had Gears Tactics, Flight Simulator, Psychonauts 2, Forza Horizon 5 and Halo Infinite. Looking at the Metacritic score for the released games, that's a pretty solid line up.

Starfield is less than twelve months away and I suspect the next gen Forza game may be next year too, also Microsoft seemed to be the first to leave next gen behind so we will see the first games leveraging the full RDNA2 feature set.

They are in a good spot.

It’s the same reason why Oculus headsets are being sold at cost from now on starting with the Quest 2. The average person (not an enthusiast fighting wars over a 0.1 point frame rate difference in games on an Internet forum) is much more likely to drop $300 on something, even as an impulse buy, than $500.

As explained in the article this is just due to availability.
It's not just the PS5, it outsold the Switch as well during that particular day.
It was basically the only console widely available.
PS5, Switch and XSX are selling out in seconds as soon as new stock is available.
In the end it's meaningless since what should be compared are total shipments throughout the week and whole month and we know that Nintendo is going to win that with Sony in second place.

Its easy to justify 300$ purchase, than 500$ purchase.

I will like to get HTC Vr, but that 700$ is expensive. Which makes the 300$ more justifiable for me to buy it in the future. Since its pretty much does VR stuff.

No. Only in your world. No way average person will spend 500$, when there is 300$ option.

People who do that, have disposable income.

Ps5, you dont have a choice, Since price difference is 100$. If it was 200, like xsx/xss, you will see more people buying the 300$ ps5.

Not really. Just look at the situation in Europe xss sitting on shelves whilst xsx sells out within minutes, the demand from casuals is more towards xsx than xss.

One of the biggest European markets for xbox is the uk and you can easily buy xss right now and some retailers have offered discounts in the past to get rid of them. Just go check stock alert accounts for xbox the majority of people are asking for xsx, hell I've seen people come on ps5 stock alert account and ask for xsx and these are casuals trying to find a console for their kids for christmas.
