What if Nintendo turns Metroid Prime 4 into third person shooter RPG?

Do you think that's good or bad idea?

Metroid needs a break out game, it's an iconic franchise but the sale numbers so far have been mediocre (though Dread has been doing good, 3 millions in 3 months)

I feel like Nintendo is targeting the wrong audience. Nintendo fans are not fond of first person shooter games.

Nintendo fans are more into third person view and RPG games, by turning Prime 4 into 3rd person shooter RPG, I think Metroid will get the recognition she deserves

Meanwhile.....

Retro just updated their twitter banner to this.

This reminds me of the braindead takes saying that Nintendo should bring F Zero back but make it an open world Yakuza clone where Captain Falcon beats people up.

What's the point of using a franchise if you're going to completely ruin its core characteristics? Just make a new IP.

BOTW didn't follow characteristics of previous Zelda games either, and look how that turned out

I think it would be a bad idea, Metroid is one of the most influential franchises in the industry, metroidvanias are a thing because of that, making a Metroid game into something other than the genre they created is blasphemous.

Nintendo knows what everyone wants, now they just need to deliver.

In another thread a while back I had an idea for a new 3d Metroid game:

Samus crashes on an alien planet and must explore a huge, exotic open world to gather materials to repair her ship and leave the planet. The game is 3rd person, but switches to 1st person whenever Samus puts on her exo-suit. The suit protects her from attacks and hazardous environments (toxic mist or gas, deep water, extreme heat or cold etc.), allows her to move heavy objects (the suit’s gun has a secondary gravity function similar to the gravity gun from Half Life 2), and of course it has great offensive abilities (like shooting energy beams). However, the suit consumes energy, so she can’t wear it all the time.

When she’s outside the suit, it shrinks into a floating sphere that follows Samus around. But it still has some uses in that state: it can be used as a remotely controlled drone, and she can grab the sphere to float over gaps or slow her down if she falls (similar to the floating drone in Nier: Automata). The world is physics based similar to BotW, and while it’s open world, there are a number of large alien structures/ruins left behind by an extinct alien civilization that serve as ‘dungeons’, with lots of physics based puzzles. If there are a few settlements of sapient aliens scattered throughout the planet, they should be a fairly primitive species (like the Navi from Avatar).

A game like that has good chances to turn Metroid into a franchise that’s on par with other Nintendo IPs like Zelda. It probably should be a prequel or reboot of some kind (maybe explaining where Samus got her suit from), to properly introduce the lore and backstory to new audiences. I don‘t think another Metroid Prime in the vein of the Gamecube/Wii games could serve as a ‚breakout game‘.

I'd like it as I prefer 3rd person games over 1st. And I used to love FPS games, but fell off in a big way. I feel they've peaked years ago in what they are capable of in terms of game design, or at the very least I don't like the mixture of scripted sequences that take away player agency in a goofy presentation. The plot delivery is almost always the same. The last fps I enjoyed fully was Bioshock Infinite. Sure I've played a TON of others but they all play the same more or less. Now the Thiefs, Deus Ex's, Preys and other immersive sims are different and I love them, but my main largest gripe with Metroid Prime are the god awful controls. I was soooo disappointed by the gameplay. Like its a god damned fps, let me control where I want to look. I didn't mind the other elements but dear god that still aggravates me to this day. If they can fix the controls I'll be down. But I feel they could switch perspective and really open up some gameplay options.

I know I'm pissing on people's hushpuppies here, I mean no offense. Glad they're happy. For me such a basic design decision hamstrung the experience completely. Just been playing FP games too long and expectations were set. Its why I understand people upset about a lack of inverted options or the lack of a jump button. People go in anticipating a certain core feature and when its not there, it ruins the immersion. So yeah I'm actually hoping its different. The 2D games rock, and I don't get the hate for Other M. I know I'm weird.

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
Okay. This probably means we're close.

Now we start throwing out a bunch of weird theories and ideas. And then when we get real info, it's the core game we were all asking for.

I'm gonna put it bluntly, FPS game sucks!!...and It doesn't fit Nintendo DNA
But the Prime games are very much action adventure games first and FPS second. Honestly Metroid Prime is the closest thing Nintendo have to the classic Zelda formula now that BotW made Zelda open world.

I would be totally down for a Metroid game as a third person action adventure. Imagine if it played like Returnal (as in gameplay and atmosphere, not rogue lite), with awesome particle effects, creepy monsters and fast and fluid gameplay. It would be a dream and something Metroid could need to revitalize itself, as the franchise did with Prime. Although I'm perfectly happy with 2D and Prime. They are top quality games I would never miss out on.

Would kind of lose somthing, pretending to be in that big ass suit looking out of that helmet with the HUD is great.
But if they can make a good game as a third person set up I'd still be down.

because RPG gives you freedom, customization, different builds, sub-quests, .....it's a lot more flexible and more replay value than just straight-up shooter
then SPLATOON is that game you want. not everything has to be RPG

Maybe you suck at FPS. Nintendo have been doing FPS long time. Prime is not the first.

Maybe you suck at FPS ever though of that. Nintendo have been doing FPS long time. Prime is not the first.

Splatoon is intended for multiplayer/online/competitive shooter, lack of story.....Not so for Metroid, Metroid games should be heavy on story

FPS gives me headache

But this is Nintendo do. They don't care about story, graphics as long as it FUN and has great GAMEPLAY. oh they can add Metroid Prime Hunters multiplayer mode with online. BAMB!
oh i get you. sorry but Prime is not for you.

Metroid Prime games can be FPS and also be heavy on story.

I don't want another god damn RPG. Metroid needs to continue being what it is, but released more frequently.

Would be kinda weird since it’s a direct sequel imo. If it was a reboot or a spin-off I could see it, but I don’t think they’ll stray too far away from the original trilogy.

As for the idea itself, not sure how I’d feel about it. Could be good I guess, I’d probably buy it either way though just because it’s Metroid. More Metroid is always good in my book.

Seeing through the multiple visors is kind of what makes Prime, Prime. Of all the things you could change, that would probably be the worst.

An RPG approach can clearly work with Metroidvania progression, but I don't think it suits this series or its main character. She's been a bounty hunter fighting against impossible odds for decades. Having her start as an unskilled noob then gain in power from grinding space bats to become OP makes no sense.

I'm open to innovation and new mechanics, but you're looking for a different series.

Metroid can be anything, Metroid Prime as a series is identified as a First Person Adventure game (FPA not FPS, remember ;)?). So, it would be feel very off.

I agree with the OP. Metroid Prime was the game that “ruined core characteristics’ by taking a 2D game and making it a FPS in the first place.

Super Metroid (one of the best games of all time) had elements of “rpg” like finding weapons and upgrades etc: I’d love the new Metroid to be a 3rd person shooter with great and terrifying environments, and be able to upgrade Samus’ armor, weapons, and maybe even level her up too. First person shooters are a dime a dozen and so generic. I miss games like Socom and the OG Ghost recons. I can picture a great Metroid game in the vein of the Dead Space games.
