Gran Turismo 7 on PlayStation 5: The Digital Foundry Tech Review

As someone whose terrible at car games but loves playing them I can't wait to go crazy in this one with the fellas..We been playing the hell outta Forza and we're ready to jump in on some GT7 as well

It looks good to me, and as long as the multiplayer component is strong I won't have many complaints

Edit: People don't get banned arguing over the console war stuff, just play the games or don't..but good threads that turn into troll fests and a bunch of bans ruin the reading for the majority that don't subscribe to the bullshit.

I cant wait for this VRR update to come out on PS5 just so I never have to hear about VRR on this board again. Fucking hell. Why can you people be normal.
what a fucking idiotic hot take. VRR has been promised since the reveal of ps5...almost 2 years later its still not here.

That has nothing to do with people acting like buffoons in this and every DF thread. I literally called out Sony for taking so long just yesterday.

VRR should be coming to PS5 this month. Their tvs just got it this morning. Shocking how it's taken Sony so long to get such a basic feature implemented. This is supposed to be a billion dollar tech giant. Not some mom and pop shop start up.
You can criticize Sony's lack of VRR implementation without coming across as some kind of VRR evangelist. It's embarrassing and after 2 years of this nonsense, I am sick of it.

IMO DF simply like to talk positive things only about exclusive games. This seems like a bare minimum effort coming from GT Sports. I have seen another video and Pro doesn't look too bad. So loading times and controller are only worthy upgrade for PS5

Replay framerates can hit the mid twenties with RT and weather.
This is not a good faith post.

It's always funny because the people who talk nonsense like that never show up to actually play online when the time comes.
Shots fired. DonJuanSchlong DonJuanSchlong Do you accept this challenge?

Not saying he is correct at all but from Sony perspective the PS5 enters in 3rd FY in April 1.

FY2021 (Nov 2020 to Mar 2021)
FY2022 (Apr 2021 to Mar 2022)
FY2023 (Apr 2022 to Mar 2023)

I can see people using the calendar year the same way.

2020 = Year 1
2021 = Year 2
2022 = Year 3

In a business sense no matter if it was launched in the begin or the end of the FY... it pertences for that FY.
CY2020 or FY2021 were the Year 1 for PS5 in business terms.

I feel the same way. I legit laughed out loud when Richard declared a generational difference when showing a comparison between Forza Horizon Xbox One and XSX and it basically amounted to tessellation and slightly higher res textures. Alex handwaived the mediocre Deathloop visuals because it wasnt trying to be a technical showpiece. Umm then why is it a next gen exclusive?

At least John mentioned that Nanite might help with the environments, but I dont think thats enough. Not having ray tracing during gameplay when Miles had it launch is unacceptable and should be called out as such. The 2D trees should be called out. I can handle cross gen games if devs put in enough effort to make them standout from prior gen games. Better foliage, ray traced GI lighting, and 120 fps modes have been a thing on PC for almost 4 years now. If anything, first party Devs responsible for pushing next gen tech have to be held to a higher standard.

It's John, he's a console/physical media guy who uses the word "superb" 60 times per video every time an exclusive comes out. (PS exclusives usually look good tbh)
Tho to be fair, him being a console guy balance things out at DF with Alex being a PC Overlord.

GT cars/sky/weather are looking really good, environment and track details less so. The zoom on the BMW headlight had me go "wow".

Brilliant “selective” sound bites there Riky 👍
No comment on the incredible Raytracing solution Riky?

Framerates hit the forties, needs dynamic resolution badly.

If you take a step back and realize 40fps isn't good for Racing game, you'll soon realize this isn't good on ps5, Xbox, PC, etc. Stop console warring yourself, and ask for better performance from the devs.

"During play, the news is predominately positive. In the vast majority of cases, you'll enjoy completely stable 60 frames per second gameplay. Nearly every race runs consistently, even with a grid of 20 cars on the track."

Are you guys reading something else?

Extremely underwhelming for a PS5 game. Basically just a resolution upgrade and a few settings bumps.

Guess I'll have to wait for Forza Motorsport for a next gen racing game.
You might be waiting a while. All the games coming out this year were launch window PS5 games that got impacted by the pandemic.

What I see from GT7 is good enough. PS4 Pro and Xbox Series X has really ruined the start of this generation where typically the new gen graphics jump in these games would have been more than good enough. So now we're in a huge diminishing returns funk while the supply situation and the next gen development both need to get ramped up.

Both MS and Sony massively undershot specs-wise last gen and we're paying for it now.

very positive review by John, its sure not as big jump as Forbiden West vs Horizon 1 but dynamic daytime with this beautiful sky is something (also apparenlty much improved physics accroding to other reviews), good not only resolution improved on ps5 but also draw distance and environement details

Environments looks very dated overall, they really harken back to GT4/GT HD/GT5P in the flat textures and the odd patches of grass sticking up that fold over. I have to disagree about the Tokyo buildings, they look simply modelled and flat looking. Many of the tracks I really don't like the tree modeling and environment detail layouts, can be quite crude looking.

One thing I used to love in GT were the replays. PD used to be great with the camera work and this came to a peak in GT5P, it's absolutely spot on and had 4 different extremely well done replays per track, used to love kicking back watching the cinematography. This is what set it above Forza 3/4, the artistry and car modeling. The car modeling is still there but as you saw with GTSport the replays went in the bin to my horror. They instead have a lot of very generic camera work on a 16.9 image cropped to a fake 21.9 with text you can't disable. GT7 looks to be full screen but has that same generic style.

GT Sport leaves me cold and this looks very much like it sadly.

The older GT's had excellent night stage tracks at Tokyo and GT5P had an excellent driving city track in the daytime. The one in GT Sport and GT7 is just awful and really encapsulates the drop in artistry. It's a very dull trundle through long narrow tunnels. The imagination in the older GT Tokyo tracks is there to see and I'm really sad GT7 not hitting those design highs. GT Sport's new fictional tracks are really poor compared to the all the previous titles.

GT5 is the last game that had some of the PD magic and racing forums buzzing with activity. I don't see this reigniting those days, it's too close to GT Sport. After all this time since GT4 this really should be an exciting GT showcase and have the old tracks redone in a better way with more realistic lush tracks with the awesome camera work of past titles.

Gran TURISMO and the PlayStation relationship is strong, god of war on steam is living proof we’ll see GT7 on there too.

What time is it?
2020 = year 1 of release
2021 = year 2 after release
2022 = year 3 after release

so its actually been three years

2020 was a leap year so the PS5 has actually been out for 12 years.

Gran TURISMO and the PlayStation relationship is strong, god of war on steam is living proof we’ll see GT7 on there too.

Maybe a few years after GT Sport is released on Steam.

I don't get this comment. Are you saying VRR is not important?

You're still going to hear about it and for folks like you that don't have a VRR set, you're just not going to understand.

Well he has a point somewhat. GT7 looks good, but Forza Motorsport will be XSX/XSS exclusive. It isn't coming to Xbox One. So it better blow us away. It should! Forza Horizon 5 looks fantastic and with FM being closed circuit racing and exclusive to current gen software it should look even better!

OMG... I just finished the video. My knees are weak. PS hating console warriors on suicide watch right now.

Just checked my PlayStation Direct pre-order and it still says preparing to ship... I hope it's delivered on Friday.

". Effectively, when using ray traced reflections, this feature is engaged in basically every scene featuring cars except actual gameplay. Replays, interludes and everything within the menu system uses this feature but the frame-rate is capped at 30fps, while turning off RT removes the performance limit. I played with RT enabled and the reason why it's desirable comes down to the nature of cars and the materials they've made from."

interesting take
