ELDEN RING |OT| One Ring To Rule Them All

Alexios

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
I went back to Godric's castle and think I've finally explored ALL of it, got to the very top and everything, that was a bitch and no way I could have done on my first visit all those hours ago.

Edit: oh shit, I just remembered some areas with those tough knights I've yet to go to as well as that one red tint/glow knight after a drop that I couldn't hope to defeat at the time. Back in. And I just looked up what Margit's Shackle does, lmao, I don't know if I had it when fighting him but, probably.

I knew I had it, but didn’t realize you had to use it, I assumed it would activate on its own. Won the fight regardless.

Speaking with a friend who is a fellow Souls vet and we both seem to agree that out of all FROM's games this past decade it feels like Elden Ring inherited the most from Dark Souls 2 DNA, the most disparaged Souls used as a template to reach the peak, rather ironic (DS2 is incredible). Sure the catacombs are a direct inheritance of BB's chalice dungeons and when I'm sneaking through grass preparing for an assassination I'm thinking of Sekiro but the sheer amount of content, variety, build diversity and area design most remind me of DS2. Not to mention Pate, first one I found had me smiling ear-to-ear though I do prefer the old voice.

Explored all the way up the lakes last night, into the ravine, very cool stuff. In the area on the cliff due West of there now and 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️, if you know you know 😆. 65 hours clocked now, don't think I've seen even 50% of the game's world yet, good times.

Crucible Knight is a little bitch. I’m going to go back to it later.
Crucible Knight is a great teacher in telegraphing attacks. Possibly the reason he's placed in an early location. When you go back try to count how many swings in each combo and go from there. Blocking I found to be a bad idea there. Hope you get him.

What the fuck was miyazaki thinking? This has to be the most poorly designed boss he's done so far. It's fucking horrendous.
I struggled with this fight too cause I kept trying to approach it like a traditional one. Thing is it's not, but not in a good way.

Go in alone, hop on your horse, and literally run around and spam summon fallen soldiers, that's it. It'll probably take around 15-20 minutes but eventually he'll die. Just be sure to dodge his big attack.

I only hit him twice but looking back I didn't even have to. A really strong mage build could probably fight him from a distance but as a melee build it sucks ass.

It's worth completing though, arguably the best armor set and two really good weapons.

I guess there is an easy mode.

Unlocked the Barricade Shield last night. Coupled with the new (and ... seemingly really really OP) shield mechanics/ block attack I don't think there's any way you can actually take damage from basic overworld mobs again. Curious how it is with bosses. I'm assuming they'll nerf this.

I don't even want to use this because it feels like it's all I'd do is spam L2 and wait for the counter attack.

Hope you stick with it man.
Thanks. I don't even want videos. I've already watched a few of the 10 things the game doesn't tell you videos, and they're full of spoilers and don't really tell me what I'm looking for. I guess I was hoping since there are hundreds of pros on here somebody would be cool enough to jump into a game with me. I'm sure there's some secret club Co-oping it up that I'm not cool enough for. I guess I'll git gud. For the record, I was able to beat some boss in a pink boat all by myself.

Like I said check out the Firelink Pub. Lot of helpful folks. GAF has never been a hotbed for matchmaking.

I have the habit of "vacuuming" when looting, where I don't really look at what I get. I had this cool mask, and a turtle shell that can has 100 block against physical attacks. Got me thinking that it would be cool to do something like a dual-wielding ninja turtle looking samurai with a turtle shield. Maybe next playthrough.

This boulder powerleveling spot had to be intentional. The portal is right near the starting area. First site of grace you get to there, you also get access to the roundtable. I started an Astrologer to mess around with a pure mage build, and once you know where to go, you can beeline straight there as soon as you get your mount and powerlevel for as long as your patience holds out to get a nice head start.

when I got to Godfrey I was a little let down because he was just gold. I Googled it and it sounds like there’s another Godfrey boss battle. Kinda bummed I spoiled that for myself. My Greatsword does great on map enemies, but it’s just a giant swing. I’m wanting to switch it up.

You sure you are at the right tower? There are three towers. You want the one in the middle. You will never complete this side quest without looking it up.

so I unlocked a summon tonight which has to be the summon in the game

I’m having so much fun messing around with it

Yeah I was at the wrong tower lol

anyone else finding this to be one of the easier souls games? on ds1 and demon's souls, i'd be stuck on bosses for days.

on this and bloodborne, it doesn't take any longer than 30 minutes.

for reference of where i'm at, i just beat the Academy of Raya .

Overall, i am loving the game a lot. But some of the open world re-used bosses are getting kind of annoying. Doesn't really offer a whole lot to do.

Booted up the PS5 version after finishing platinum with PS4 version, and man the framerate is rough on that version.

But i also wanna do a mage build run for the PS5 version platinum.

Thanks, good thing I only paid $30 for it, I'd still like someone to show me the ropes. Kinda like in real life when you don't have go into battle completely alone. And then make that decision myself. I followed a YT guide to OP my character and weapons. I'm just really just looking for someone who's willing to walk me through the finer details and I'd rather it be someone from gaf than a redditor or rando from the xbox.
Hey I’d be happy to walk you through whatever it is you want help with. If you’re on Xbox and want to chat through anything, feel free to add my tag - Luc1fers Beard

My god, this game has GOT to be game of the year, maybe decade. I'm still finding things in the FIRST AREA that I'd missed and needed to get. All the little side quests and dungeons are great as well. I simply do not understand how they planned for and implemented all the things that they have for this game. It's unreal. I'm thinking it must be the results of a decade or more worth of notes that they finally felt the technology could handle packing in. That being the case, I totally understand why it has been said that they are not planning on a sequel to Elden Ring. I don't know how you could put a sequel together and pack it with the same level and amount of content. Just an amazing, amazing game. My friends and I just keep finding new things that we'd missed earlier. Just an incredible game!

Elden ring trashes all the soulsborne games from the highest highs
there's no going back for me now

Nah, DkS1, Bloodborne, and Sekiro are all better games.

Half the time this game is amazing, the other half it is just decent as you ride around samey areas killing trash mobs. In the other games I mentioned, there are no encounters to be bored of and half-focused on. Everything is premium and amazingly crafted (some unfinished areas of DkS1 notwithstanding).

Yeah that's the "worst" part of the game for me so far, just a gimmick fight where you ride around pressing Y to summon.

If people want to learn that thing 1v1 melee, power to them, doesn't sound fun at all to time.

It probably is. Exp scaling sucks ass in this game. Those god damn bears almost kill me yet give little exp.

Finished. Beat all main and trophy/achievement bosses, sure there is some overworld and cave/catacomb bosses I still need to find. Got Ranni ending.

Also a major optional end game boss broke on me.

I went into the Godrick match thinking Id stay here for a while but I beat him on the third try or something. With the jelly summon and the NPC, and a lot of jump attacks 2 handing the uchigatana. I swear that jump-attack is OP, both bosses Ive used this on have broken several times and been really easy because of it. Run, jump in and heavy attack. I like it, but im surprised how well it works.

A shame I didnt get to really know him, he seemed like a colorful and lively guy.

So who here actually played the game honestly and beat everything without Mimic Tear / Range Abuse / Finger Summoning? And what were you running?

My set up currently in NG+

Blood Uchigatana + 25 & Hands of Malenia + 10
Marionette Soldiers + 10 & Knight Kristoff + 10, switch depending on if I need range with stagger + consistent DPS or a tank with lightning damage.
Physick Flask is + Dex & + Half Heal
Talismans I switch up quite a bit for slots 3 & 4, but I always use Winged Sword & Great Jar.
Rune that gives HP, Stamina & FP.

I plan on respec'n near the end of this playthrough to setup for the next one, but looking for some cool ideas.

Boulder spot isn't all that to be honest, there are way, way better areas to farm. Caelid on the whole is quite a treasure trove of cheap runes, but there's one spot in particular deep in the undergrounds that's simply disgustingly good.

From Software logic: it’s so much easier to kill a fucking DRAGON, than many dungeon bosses and definitely more than the main quest bosses.
The dragon has a pattern that you can learn and exploit.
The dragon won’t pull a combo-extending hit out of its ass as soon as you make your move to strike.
The dragon doesn’t seem to have an algorithm that says “attack!” the very instant you press the button to heal.

I found it to be pretty easy until the last few bosses + late optional which are very hard. 2h starting katana no ashes. Most of the bosses I killed the first try and if not within 3. But if you use an ashe those few tough fights are easy. If you use the horse you can trivialize everything. Games balance is off.

Exception the final optional boss is a monster. Even harder if you use an ashe.

It why I never understood why people have as much trouble in DS2 with the Ancient Dragon or Midir in DS3 over the other bosses tbh

Also, is it worth keeping the Item from Godrick or selling for 20,000 runes? I'm doing a Strength/Dex build if that helps

Demons Souls is way easier, but it all comes down to how you play this games, they can get as hard or easy as you want them too.
Also "hard" is really a thing of perspective, some people have an easier time with execution heavy mechanics and some people have an easier time with strategy heavy mechanics, Souls games have always acomodated both play styles to different degrees.

Crap... there is a bug with upgrading weapons to +25. For some items/infusions, such as my Keen Nagakiba, you will LOSE damage when you raise it to +25 :( Found a lot of threads on Reddit about this.

Tried it yesterday and dude it seemed impossible to me. I guess it's designed to be beaten with help of the summons?
