Will Smith slaps Chris Rock at the Oscars

Days like these...

Have a Blessed Day
Ok ...

I'm 47. I grew up in Mississippi. I left Mississippi 15 years ago to work at a magazine (which is now defunct) where I was deputy editor. Met Christian Audigier, Chilli from TLC, Roy Jones Jr and other celebrities. Been on location for photoshoots. Covered E3 twice (as in BEING there). Wrote and edited articles. So I'm familiar with actual office etiquette and dress codes. I'm used to dressing up and making myself presentable in company with wealthy individuals and and celebrities.

I haven't been part of that industry in AGES! Not since 2013. Why? Depression which lead me to doubt myself and just work blue collar jobs. I'm having to re-find myself and rebuild my confidence. At 47.

I'm working to get into a different business where I would be working with some amazing people (technically I already do but anyway...) and making good money again.

It's been hard but as I've mentioned BEFORE, I am familiar with work settings and have witnessed many black women professionals with hair similar to the ones in the pics I posted yesterday. Shoot... One woman on our board is a lawyer and she has locs!

I know you weren't trying to disparage me but I wanted to give you a bit more background on me since you think you had me figured out.

Oh, and I can provide proof to backup what I claimed was my former job.
don't try to convince a Central American that thinks he's "one of the good ones" that racism is real.

I think it Will was a white guy, it would actually be less of a discussion. They would just say he’s racist and we would never hear from him again.

OMFG, can you imagine the reaction of a white guy hitting Chris Rock? The media would have a field day pointing it out as proof that their cultish narrative is truth. They're having a hard time spinning this one though.

Not condoning what he did but people are way overreacting. Will is a broken man in a bad marriage and figured the lashing he would get from Jada is he did nothing was worse than the backlash he is getting. This one event should not destroy him.

the best would be a black actor doing a racist joke about the black wife of a white man, imagine the mental gymnastic on reee and twitter to understand who they have to cheer for and who they have to cancel...

Its not destroying him. He won best actor and received a standing ovation that night. People are just shocked by it because it was so unexpected for such a well-known public figure.

True but this is a man going through some marital stuff. He was actually laughing until Jada gave him that look and he knew what was coming if he didn't react.

People are reacting as much to the aftermath as they are to the act itself. The guy assaulted a man in front of millions of witnesses and security, then he went back to his seat, yelled profanities, and received an award from the people in the room a few minutes later.

Then the next day the same people who are the first to condemn others for “bad” actions and opinions made excuses for him. They were more worried in the moment about Will Smith’s well being and reputation than they were about the victim. The people that are among the loudest voices for every “moral” cause revealed themselves to be complete hypocrites in a way that doesn’t happen every day.

So while the act itself is getting a lot of attention, what really draws people to this goes beyond the act itself.

He is a grown man who is accountable for his own actions. It won’t destroy him forever, nor should it, but he is fully deserving of any and all backlash he is getting. If he can’t handle it, he should have had better control over his emotions. If the average person did this to a coworker, they’d be fired on the spot and their career would be ruined. Will will be fine. We should be much more concerned about Chris Rock who did not choose to be humiliated in front of millions, then Will Smith, the “broken man”, who made a choice to humiliate both himself and Chris.

In summary, I do not give a shit about Will Smith’s feelings. He has infinitely more resources to get help than any of us do and this is squarely on him. I obviously don’t wish him any harm, but it seems like he took care of that himself.

What a weird hypothetical... nobody should punch a comedian for doing their job.

It seems that comedians are under a great assault from humorless people lately... just look how they tried (and failed!) to cancel Dave Chappelle.
What's even dumber is most of Will Smith's fame comes from comedy tv shows and movies. And Jada Pinkett was on a Different World in the 90s. You'd think if anyone in the crowd can take a joke it would be these two. And Chris Rock's joke was a 2 second one-off joke.

It's not like he's roasting some 85 year old US military commander with cancer, or has an amputated leg from wars.

because all rules are off the table if that happens. dude made a gi jane joke...

See this is where Chris fucked up, he used a privileged white woman for the point of reference.

Instead of;

R-C.84197c97191168336febd4625f957a72

Where he would have made the most hilarious joke of all time yaas queen!

I don't even know if this is parody, because it probably would have landed that well.

Why are some people trying so hard to justify \ play down violence in this case? Seriously, what’s so special about Will Smith?
Its because many people can at least understand the position he was in even if they don't agree with what happened.

And what position was that?

Please be clear why this example of violence should be tolerated / not utterly condemned and prosecute? I mean, Chris Rock isn’t a Nazi, so why the need to downplay it?

And I agree. But most normal people can imagine being put into a position where their Wife/SO is being openly insulted and reacting badly to that situation. It's why Will is getting sympathy. If this had been at a Oscar party literally no one would care. It would be celebrity drama. But the fact it happened live has made an otherwise forgetful moment more than it needed to be.

People need to move on. It's celebrity BS. There is no need to waste this much time on this.

Garbage excuse to be frank. Just about anytime someone is insulted there is a loved one who would prefer they weren’t. Do women need to be protected by men from bad words? Is that what ‘normal’ people believe?

edit: Just saw your edit. This seems to be another common line amongst apologists for his violence ‘move on, it’s not a big deal’. Why try so hard to play it down?

Have you ever been to a bar or a club on the weekend? This shit happens all the time. The only reason this is notable is that it happened at the Oscars and the people involved are famous. Chris was wrong for making the joke and Will was wrong for losing his cool like he did. Neither are the devil incarnate. Chris is not a heartless monster. Will is not insane. He does not need to be behind bars and he is not going to have his career ruined because of this.

It's time for everyone to move on and quit trying to drag this meaningless drama out.

Trying to make this seem like a bar fight situation now? Sure, I mean if Will Smith at a publicly broadcast, professional event should be held to the same scrutiny as some dumb drunk fuck at a bar at 2am, why not? Imagine trying to put telling a joke about someone and someone physically assaulting someone on the same level. What if it was Amy Schumer who told the joke? I mean drunk idiots at bars hit women all the time for insults? She would be wrong for making the joke, right? Will is still defending his wife’s honour, so move on, yeah?

There is nothing meaningless about normalising violence. So I really struggle to understand why people (including yoursel) are trying so hard to do so.

Yeah I don't care enough about this nonsense to debate it. If you wanna treat this as some major event in our times then go for it. I'll be paying attention to things that actually matter.

I wish you the best of luck in whatever point you are trying to make though.

I was just asking a question that for some reason you don’t want to answer. ‘Move on’ seems to be the order of the day for violence apologists, so be it.

I wish you the best in restraining yourself from assaulting people who offend your SO in future, as a normal person of course.

You for real?

Yep you get a slap back in a club.

What clubs you go to?

It's assault.

Yep you caught me. I am a apologist for violence.

Let's just ignore that the very first post that I ever made in this thread was condemning both Chris Rock for his inappropriate joke and Will Smith for his ridiculous response. Yep just apologizing for violence and endorsing it in every way that I can every chance I get. That's me alright.

This is exactly why I usually do not bother with these celebrity drama threads. 🙄

But that’s the whole point, you’re equating jokes with physical violence. Stop trying to squirm your way out of it. Maybe you just don’t want to bother with this particular drama because you’ve been called out on a shit take.

You seem to be doing a lot of bothering for something you don’t bother with. Why do you care so much that someone gets criticised for striking someone?

To be honest it doesn't sound like you've actually seen how this plays out in a bar. I'm not trying to come at you or make you feel bad, I actually like you and your posts man, but this shit does not happen in bars all the time, or at least it does not happen in that manner; I'll try to lay out how it actually goes down in a bar, as I've, unfortunately, been involved in numerous incidents of this nature in bars and clubs when I was much younger due to the company I kept. Dude makes a crack about Guy's girl, Guy approaches Dude, Guy hits Dude, Dude then proceeds to either hit Guy back or yell something along the nature of what the fuck or fuck you very loudly then start posturing, regardless of Dude's choice bouncers fall on both men and choke/beat the shit out of both while "restraining" them, then both Guy and Dude are "escorted" (read: dragged) out of said bar or club and tossed the fuck out front on the curb, and if either are dumb enough to try and get back in they get about three or four 250 pound bouncers throwing them around like rag dolls for a bit in front of the line out front.

In short, Will Smith's idiotic assault of a comedian over a harmless, mellow joke has little to nothing in common with the average dust up at a bar, if only because he fucking got away with it scot free, and no I don't consider his fucking "resignation from the academy" as a proper punishment. Can't figure out why people are taking up for him for being a virulent idiot out here throwing hands over a fucking mild ass joke. The joke was not too far, it was not inappropriate, it was grade school level silliness that resulted in hands that just weren't necessary on any level. People taking up for Will here are just fucking embarrassing themselves man, and honestly it shows me that you guys probably have some twisted, toxic ass relationship beliefs; the ironic part here is that it's mostly the people who pride themselves on being "progressive" who are taking up for Will here, in an instance where Will has portrayed perhaps the most regressive and antiquated behavior I've seen on public display from a celebrity since Jack Nicholson hitting paparazzi's at Lakers games, and at least Jack fucking warned the pricks to get away from his kids before going into full blown assault mode.

Goddamn celebrities and their fucking weird ass apologists are out of touch and disconnected.
