Sony is requiring devs to offer timed game trials for PS+ Premium subscribers for games that cost more than $34 (Update: Wholesale Pricing)

Wait wasn't this already implemented? I remember some shitstorm here, how the time was calculated when you hit the download button. Or something, do I...am I crazy?

I guess sony gotta find ways to make the premium tier attractive. Did we really need 3 tiers though? It should have been just ps plus basic and ps plus premium.
With 3 tiers they can now say they have a more "diverse offering" than the competition offering their fans "more choices".

Surely this could effect games sales massively?
potentially in a positive way, as someone said - the people who pay for the highest tier are more likely to convert because they are the core audience.

People have the opportunity to try games that they would potentially ignore and purchase them based on a positive experience.

It could go either way tho.

Game pass doesn’t off all games having a 2 hour demo window if its not on gamepass.
Game Pass games ARE the full games. Right?
lets say a new game comes out, a lot of people preorder, a lot of people buy day one.
OK.

People will now just play the 2 hour demo and see how it is.
OK.

Ie: hurt sales
or don't. 🤷

Phill Said that game pass increases game sales. (sus to me but whatever).

Eons ago "game trails" were a perk of PS Plus, but no dev really bothered with it, and it was dropped like dead weight, and Sony kind of "forgot" they offered that perk to PS Plus users.

I guess a strict mandate is the only way to guarantee a perk to justify the higher price of the service.

Or...don't release games that suck?

It goes both ways. Something like this would've done wonders for games like Guardians of the Galaxy

It depends.

Bad game = less sales
Good game = more sales

Yeah, i also assume this will have the same effect microsoft claims gamepass will have if your game is good. If its good not only will people go on to purchase it to continue playing they will talk about how good it is.

I know if i had played the first two hours of guardians of the galaxy on a trial i would have 100% bought it right after. Could have gotten it a lot of sales right out the gate without having a big subscription day 1 deal

I like this better than the standard 2 hours refund policy since it's an actual trial and you don't have to try and get your money back.

Bought Diablo 2 Ressurected. Took ages to get onto the servers. Played for like 30 minutes, realized it was all nostalgia and the game doesn't hold up very well. Tried to get refund - denied because sitting in the main menu trying to connect was play time.

I'll still probably get the medium tier though.

Again its down to taste when you say games that suck.

For me God of war and I just dont gel. I can see its high production values but i dont like the game. I bought it and fair enough i dont like it, if i had the 2 hour trial they would never of got my money.

on the other hand i love the Spider-Man game but you may not, its all down to taste and with the 2 hour demo there’s a chance it can impact sales both positivly and negatively

They have 3 months to release a demo after release. They should be fine.
3 month window post release is when Dev's use to fix bugs and create patches for their game aka developing finish their games.

I love how you know so much about the game development process.

I'm not a stock holder...everything you say is positive for you a consumer. If you had this trial option you wouldn't spend money on God of War...a game you didn't enjoy.
Somewhere out there is a person that never played God of War that would have tried it and bought it right after the trial is over.

I see no bad thing for us consumers...

Agreed but as a company forcing this ain’t a great thing on developers is it?

we can at least agree on that lol

Again you are using his words badly, yes he said gamepass increases sales.
Ok
This is completely different and you know it.
Obviously is different, duh
NOT EVERY NEW GAME HAS A 2 HOUR DEMO ON GAMEPASS
But EVERY game pass game is the FULL game (new or old).

PSPremium and Game Pass are paid services = (not every one is going to have the benefits of the services).

Now. Let say that Every NEW 60+$ dollar game is on Game Pass.. Does Phil Spencer statement magically dosen't apply?..How convenient.

thmakeyou go made it clearer for you
Thanks.

A good idea.

Console makers should had required demos like the 360/PS3 gen where it seemed every game had a demo or trial.

That disappeared fast when Xbox One/PS4 launched and then hardly any games have demos.

It's not good. Just like it's not good for us to have to deal with bullshit trailers for 3 years and then having to deal with disappointing games that are released for 60 / 70 dollars or euros.

Also, this could be done simply by allowing you do download the full game and after 2 hours it locks the game not allowing you to go on until you buy it.
We have no idea how much work for developers this will be. Probably not much, unless you don't want users to play the first 2 hours.

It's a 2-hour countdown and then lock the game

I doubt that's difficult

That wasn't the point of my post either
There's a reason why demos had sometimes special content that you wouldn't see in the game.

Demo's are typically a "taste of everything and a tease of what's to come".

The first 2 hours of a game aren't always ideal for those purposes.

First 2 hours of any AssCreed game will get you awful story, boring gameplay and a little bit of fun.

A "first 2 hours" is a weird mandate, it's not as simple as you've stated. Developers don't design their first 2 hours of a 10-20 hour game to have all the elements or fun parts in it.

It's like if Netflix implemented a FIRST 20 MINUTES of EVERY SINGLE MOVIE RELEASING mandate, the first 20 minutes of a movie doesn't give you a great idea sometimes of what the movie is about.

With all the people glitching games to make the best speedrun many games without the right weird gates could be completed by those glitchers.

An open world game can't just be "gated to 2 hours" it'll have to have gates in the world to prevent being finished in 2 hours.

UNLESS they're saying there's a 2 hour TIMER on the game, but still people will figure out ways buck the system.

A Fucking Idiot
If I made a list of all the games I dropped in under 2 hours of gameplay over the years it would fill this page.

Now I can download and play every game for 2 hours? Do you know how many games I would have bought and now will not?

LOL this is such a huge L for anyone publishing on PS. I can't imagine the lost sales this will create. Sony will be the only one making money.

Ughhh how about just give your customers the right to return the game if they haven't played for more than 2 hours?
This is likely to avoid any back/forth that might need to happen — avoid any customer support calls asking why my refund hasn't posted yet, etc etc. Just a guess. I know Steam does it. But does it really matter since you get to try it out regardless?

Holy shit. if it's mandated and you don't have the time or want to put in the work to do a curated experience, then plop the timer on and be done with it. No, that's not difficult to do

And again before you go keyboard warrior mode, my post wasn't about whether it's difficult to implement. It was about whether it would hurt initial sales.

Issue there is people like me have no interest in paying for old games and streaming.

Extra is for people like me. It’s just modern games, downloads.

If they wanted me to get premium they’d fail to get my money, but with Extra they have a shot. (If the games are good.)
