Those new tanks Russia is parading would be burning like all the rest. You need something other than a Russian driving them.

It's coming but not officially

The war in Ukraine is unfortunate it’s understandable for Russia wanting land but war makes things more difficult.

I have to say your choice of words and logic to describe the atrocities being done to the Ukrainian people took me by surprise. But I'll give you the benefit of the doubt - for now.

Edit: So, it appears there was no good reason to give him the benefit of the doubt, so I take it back.

I have nothing much to add, I was just musing how fucking wild it is that as a species, a large portion of us are killing each other, shelling buildings, blowing up bridges, etc, and we're just so fucking desentized to it that the big news right now is people (on both sides) screeching about abortion. War is like a tiktok trend, after a week it's boring and we all move on to shit that's sparkly and fresh, while people are literally rotting in fields.

I know war has always been a thing, way before the era of cell phones, nukes, tanks and guns, but I think technology advancing and becoming as accessible as it is just really drives it home that we are privileged as fuck to be living in places that aren't battlefields.

Good for them, still they could try to leave all weapons and surrender.

I noticed a tweet with a text in that thread linked to this story which could help explain the sick culture among Russian soldiers:

If this article (an old article btw) is true they are basically indirectly conditioning soldiers (by tormenting each other) to commit atrocities even against civilians, and without giving a fuck.

And here's a small anecdotal piece of insight into how people inside Russia is feeling right now.:

This makes no sense. Who gives a flying fuck what Russia wants?
The Kremlin has no regard for it's troops, it's people, and fuck-all if they have any sympathy for a fellow Human Being, let alone the fucking meek, which they have slaughtered.

At this point, Russian people have 2 options, side with humanity or side with the in-human dogs that make up the Kremlin.

As a traditional anti-populist, Macron is just telling the truths people don't want to hear.
Yes it will take time for Ukraine to join the EU. For regular candidates without any complex situation, it usually takes around 10 years. Add to that the fact that Ukraine will be in an unstable state of war for an unknown duration. Also additional expansion of the EU probably won't happen without a change of its functioning status that is currently based on consensus ; it's already a pain to manage in its current state, it will only be worse with more members. Changing treaties also takes a lot of time.
Finally Ukraine being a large country, in population and (cultivated) surface, its joining will not be a formality since it will significantly change the balance between members.

As for not wanting to humiliate Russia, well that's what European history taught us. For centuries humiliated countries only had one thing in mind : getting back to their enemies once they've replenished their strengths. All wars ended with the prospect of the next one to come. Unless we intend to go back to the neverending cycle of European wars, we'll need to make sure that Russia as a country can accept living and working with its neighbours. Which doesn't mean dismissing the crimes that were committed, nor forgetting to judge those who were responsible for them, but one needs to think of what's coming next. And to guarantee peace with an opposing country, you only have two options : turn them into allies, or go full "delenda Carthago" and genocide them.

“I want to keep buying cheap gas when this shit blows over.”

The ‘don’t humiliate Russia‘ line is pure self serving bullshit. Dictatorship countries that commit mass genocide deserve humiliation and destruction… with their statehood eventually reset and restructured on a better democratic basis. Macron’s weakness only helps prevent that from happening, the worthless little snail.

I remember one historian making a presentation about Russia in WW1 and one of his sentences stuck with me.
Since Peter the great, that Russia has preponderance of claiming some threat to itself, as an excuse o invade it's neighbors and annex them.
It seems Putin keeps this long lasting tradition of playing the victim, to be able to invade other countries.

Macron is all in on nuclear power plus renewable energies. France is already not that dependent on Russian gas (around 17% before the war, main provider being Norway), and intends to be even less so in the future.

Sure. In about half a decade, minimum. He still wants that sweet, sweet cheap Putin gas for the time being, just like so many Euro countries that are propping him up.

In the case of France it's not about gas, it's about exposure. Their companies were very aggressive in expanding into the Russian market post-2010, so they have much greater systemic risk.

Why would they want to...

Nothing but an empty, vacuous talking shop designed to give Germany the economic means to do what it can no longer accomplish by military means.

All this tree hugging, EU brotherhood horseshit, is just that, superficial horseshit. Scratch beneath the surface and all the historic tensions are there, waiting to surface and as the last few months have demonstrated, Countries will only go so far, until it threatens their own, internal selfish interests.

Which is great, same happened to Poland. At the same time everything in our countries is owned by Germany, Netherlands, France and UK.

Your car manufacturing, electricity, telecommunication, oil, gas and pretty much everything else is not Czech-owned... congratulations.

That is true a lot of food has been outsourced to Turkey. However the problem with this is, that it's not those filthy western companies buying our shit. The rampant privatization "tunneling" meant that without foreign help, these companies would cease to exist. Let's not blame others corruption here is still extremely high. And it was much higher, when people in power during Bolshevik got in their hands companies which was state owned beforehand to their own hands.

So in other words Germany and other rich countries took over your country by economic means instead of military means. Exactly like Dr.D00p Dr.D00p said.
