Playstation does the same thing on your non-primary console.

You can't download games to a 2nd machine w/o expecting online DRM... that's across any system.. Steam, Xbox, Playstation..

MS/Sony both have the same method for 1 of your systems to work offline, but you can't feasibly do that on more than 1 system without inviting exploits.

Ah I see, SonyToo™.

The issue was beyond it being for just people who hadn't set their console to being primary/home:

There were also a few people in this thread who reported the same thing:

The good news is that Microsoft are looking in to rectifying it.

If these were games I had *purchased*, then I would be livid. But this is an online “pass”. Of course you will need to check in online to maintain access. Otherwise people can fill up various hard drives full of games downloaded and “turn off” the service, never paying a dime past the initial month.

The people that couldn't play, were people that don't have their console set as home, we got news coverings off it and loads off misinformation even from the likes of MVG, claiming some DRM nonsense.

It got massively blown out of proportion (like everything now days)
Except it isn’t. My console was set to home but I couldn’t access any gamepass game. I feel shocked that so many people want to swipe this under a carpet. I don’t mind logging in once a week, or month, but in this case I couldn’t access any gamepass game, even when I played some of them the day before. At least Sony lets you play for minimum one week if they’d be down, which is infinitely better already than, just nope.

This was already kind of part of the terms of PS Now (though 14 days IIRC), I think I'd be more shocked if it wasn't there with the tiered system as well.

Phone reception is more important to me than human rights
So, it used to be 14 days, and now it's 7... I guess if this affects you then you'll need to seriously re-evaluate paying for the premium tier of an online gaming service. Or switch services...

Only once every 30 days
Hell, I had no idea it used to be 14 days....

PS NOW HAD A SIMILAR REQUIREMENT

It’s also worth keeping in mind that you can access the games offline, so long as it’s within the first seven days of your last login. PS Now had a similar requirement, however, that service required you to login every fourteen days and not seven days.

The PS Blog post clarified: “When playing a downloaded game from the game catalogue in PS Plus Extra and Premium plans, you’ll need to connect to PSN every seven days to validate your PS Plus membership and maintain your access to the game.

Please note, this step is only required for game catalogue titles in the PS Plus Extra and Premium,” continued the post. “It does not apply to the monthly downloadable games available through PS Plus Essential.

I see now, I never had PSNow...and the normal Plus is business as usual.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
So it checks that you are still subscribed and haven't disconnected after downloading all the games?
seems legit.

Im more surprized thers no authentication needed for the normal PS+ games. I always tought the console did regular check ins from time to time to validate the licences.

Expected to see this in a rental service where game go in and out of the service.

That isn't surprising that people are trying to slide this under the rug.
However, I do think the time for check-in should have been more than a week.

I see. How many people subscribed to PS+ or GamePass are only able to log in every 30 days? These are home consoles.

The search for reasons to be outraged are getting pretty pathetic now.

I wouldn't be outraged. It would kind of suck if you were taking a 2 week or longer summer vacation to a camping trailer with no internet access or something like that.
I've bought TVs and consoles for that specific purpose before. Being inconvenienced by a login requirement would be a bummer. 30 days is arguably much more sensible, since the service is usually sold as a monthly charge anyway.

Kids looking to be entertained at night, lugging their Playstation around, getting denied access to their games. I can sense parents collectively reaching for a Tylenol bottle already.

Okay, I think I understand what this means, but I could use a little clarification. Let’s say I went on vacation for 8 days (which makes me wonder why they wouldn’t make it 14 days as 7-8 day vacation trips are not that rare), does that mean I’ll simply have to re-download the game?

isnt this like a no shit situation?

why would you expect anything else from a subscription service. this is such a non issue. if they didnt do this. Id just take my ps4 that i never use, since i got my ps5. sub for a month, and download everything i want onto my hardrives. Never connect that fucker to the internet again.

You wouldn't have to re-download it. It won't delete the game. It just won't let you launch it until you log on to confirm your subscription.

Nah you'll probably get a padlock symbol next to the game if it can't confirm your subscription

Yes, but we've clearly run out of things to be outraged over and we can't let all these pitchforks and torches go to waste.

It's a matter of convenience.

Playstation customers will just need to login via piggybacking their cell phones with tethering once a week, worst case. It's a pain in the ass, and something nobody should be thinking about for a "monthly" subscription.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if I have auto-login on startup configured, than this doesn't actually affect me right?

9/10 you should be able to do that with your phone’s hotspot.

So you're taking multiple week long vacations, going to places with absolutely no Internet, yet somewhere you think bringing a PS5 is a good idea?

I'm sure this happens all the time.

That wouldn't matter. It will just check-in automatically whenever he comes back.

Thanks. Then who does this affect actually? If you're someone who doesn't have auto-login set up, that means you're entering your password every time you turn on the PS5 anyway. So whether you're gone for 3 days or 3 months, you're manually logging in anyway.

That was already known and it’s understandable since the games are not yours, they’re rented. Can you play gamepass games offline indefinitely? And Nintendo Online games?
Now open the gates for the fake outrage and CONCERNED CITIZENS.
They need to change it to check in every thirty days. Same as game pass. Seven days is ridiculous. Wouldn't be an issue for me but for folks in areas with poor internet it could be a problem. And Sony sells a lot of consoles in those areas.

Couldn’t you just hotspot on your phone for a second to re-extend the 7 days?

I've already said that above.

It doesn't. Which is why this is a non issue and inconvenience at the worst. As implied above.

Dumbasses, the whole lot of you.
