PlayStation 5 sales reach 20 million worldwide

They don't even have an incentive to show them if you think about it, that's why Sony seems much more restrained about hyping people up this time.

This situation where they only have like 3 games announced is very unusual, specially since they are bigger than ever as a publisher after all the acquisitions.
This suits me just fine. Hopefully when they see no drop in first party sales they realize you don't have to announce games more than 6 months before release and only have to give a release date a couple months before or so

Amazing!
And I’ve still not seen a single one on a shelf.
I still havent seen a PS5, Series console or non Switch Lite on shelves yet. Granted I dont go shopping in the electronics sections much these days but still.

And this is with me knowing Series consoles are now in stock on a daily basis in some places.

Xbox Series X can be bought here in Sweden for about $600 now. Series S is readily available for $300.

PS5 only sell at some weird shady sellers who want $900+ or at roughly launch price in small batch retailer lotteries minutes after they go show up in stock. It’s a mess.

It would be interesting to know the real official figures split between these two platforms. I suspect Xbox is much closer to PS this gen compared to previous gens.

The only thing that bothers me about this is that you still can’t walk into a store and buy one. It’s handled mostly as an online only thing.

Impressive numbers though. Glad I got mine at launch.

It probably isn't, the Xbox One sold pretty well early on. Even if the Series S/X is doing better (I doubt it's doing more than a couple of million extra units at most), it has a $299 SKU and the massive investment/push for Gamepass.

The PS5 is still supply constrained and in much higher demand world wide and that's before the launch of the new PS+. Sony is barely showing what they got as far as future games because they have very little incentive to do so while short on supply. The reality is that PlayStation is still dominant when it comes to traditional consoles and in a better position than it ever was (their consoles doesn't sell as much as the PS2 but it makes a lot more money for them).

This’ll be a longer generation but I don’t mind it, I feel like we still haven’t seen the potential of the ps5 just yet. Cross gen next to come to an end and the GE is still to be fully utilised.

Chill and drop the war hammer I’m just interested in what the split looks like right now since it’s so difficult to get a PS5 while XSX|S is available.
I know MS isn’t showing real figures but what’s the latest estimation? 13 mil?

Based on VGC the "source" MS used to promote that figure, it's like 1~2m units ahead of the Xbox One.

People usually underestimate how well the Xbox One sold despite being originally a $499 console (then $399 once they dropped the Kinect about a year later). It helped the Xbox One a lot that it was following the 360, given how well it did early on despite all the setbacks.

Over time the Xbox One wasn't able to keep pace with the PS4 and MS stopped giving the numbers.

Isn’t VGC pure guestimates? Are MS using them now?
Then I agree with your previous post that it’s likely worse than assumed. So lower than 14.43 mil then based on latest VGC figures, MS would use a more professional tracker if the numbers were better. So maybe 2:1.3?

Everyone I know who wants a PS5 has a PS5. Some had to wait for maybe 8-10 months after launch (I got mine 4 months after launch with zero effort except for preordering in August or something), but I feel like if you REALLY want one you have one by now.

Maybe it's easier in a smaller market like Sweden (although we also get much smaller shipments obviously), but I feel like those who still "can't get one" are probably not trying that hard?

I think that is the source of the 13m number that is thrown around, someone at MS rewetted the VGC estimate and that's it I think. Why would they do that instead of making an official statement is beyond me.

There is also the difference between shipped and sold to consumers. Since the PS5 is pretty much sold out everywhere it doesn't matter but the Series S is widely available for a long time now (everywhere as far as I know, don't know about the Series X and how it's doing worldwide).

i'm waiting for a PS5 Slim. i'm not having that thing sitting beside my TV. they need to slim it down and get rid of the glossy shit.

the wait is made easier due to lack of any meaningful PS5 exclusives. i've kept my PS4 to play HFW, GT7. hopefully in 2023/2024 there will be exclusives and a Slim model :messenger_smiling: i know this is a concept but it looks so much better:

Some countries get more consoles than others, I'm certain we don't get more than a dozen a week.
Yup, this too.

Thats what made the articles about PS5 and Series S in Japan for that 1 week funny:

For weeks Sony was supplying 20,000-30,000 consoles to Japan, no articles.

The one week when they provided 2,000-6,000 "For the first time ever Xbox sold more consoles than Sony in Japan"

Context doesnt matter for some ppl tho.

Now that Sony is supplying more consoles to Japan again.....crickets.....

But I thought people have no reason to get a PS5 now that their late ports of their 1st party games are on PC.....

Or

The only reason PS4 sold well was due to the weaker competition. This time, it will be different and the competition is tougher.

Team concerned on suicide watch.

Hmm thoughtful, wouldn’t surprise me if MS are pulling some shady shipped numbers tactics here, and I’ve seen Series S on shelves since launch.
Sorry for going off topic anyhow

PS4 hit 20 mil in 15 months.

So the ps5 is 4 months behind the ps4, and it will not catch up until 2024 (according to Sony).

The Xbox has been selling nearly the same or more as ps5 this quarter. So the gap in units will remain around 4-5 million units.

That’s a much smaller units sold gap compared to the 8th generation. Where it was around 2.5:1

This generation is much more competitive. Hopefully that gives us better games and deals.

I’m looking to get a second one for the living room. I signed up for invitation emails on PlayStation Direct and Amazon. Fingers crossed it doesn’t take too long.

This argument is kinda silly imo, a part of 'newsworthiness' around a story is related to how typically or untypical the event is.

If the ps5 outsells the switch in japan for a week, you will get your article. But as of now the switch outsells the ps5 5:1 in japan.

It’s all about what’s interesting.

The real story is the software sales tbh. Microsoft first party comfortably outsold Sony first party in Japan last year. Unprecedented.

Once again, lets not latch onto the 2024 part.

By definition "PS4 momentum by 2024" would mean it has to gradually get there...by 2024. Not start in 2024.

I mean...according to the thread you're posting in...the momentum is gonna start this year, according to Sony. And will pass it by 2024.

Again, what is context.... it only happened because Sony didnt supply the same amount as the previous weeks.

You can check current Media Create sales threads for the amounts....since Sony is now supplying more PS5's to Japan again....crickets....
When Xbox gets second in a territory, it's all about Xbox vs PlayStation. But when PlayStation is ahead of Xbox, it only matters if It outsold Switch.
Exactly.

Not sure no one said that it wasnt a supply issue but it was still a newsworthy story, right?

That’s really good considering all the supply issues, very close to the PS4 still. It always baffles me to think about where they could’ve been by now without the supply issues, maybe 30M? It just fly off the shelf.

I’m in no hurry to get one yet personally, will wait for the Slim/pro model. Hopefully it’ll be easier to get by then.
