Good. There's quite a lot I didn't like about the Starfield trailer, but the very fact this protagonist will STFU has actually rebuilt some of the hype for me. Fallout 4 was intolerable. The story was annoying, but it was my character's scripted blubbering that really cemented my displeasure and early departure from that game.

Voiced protagonists in an RPG very rarely work well when the character is player made. In Fallout 4 and Cyberpunk 2077 I sometimes felt like the inflection of some words or phrases said by the player character didn't fit quite right with the situation happening around the game. Voiced lines work best with games like The Witcher where we inhabit the life of an established persona. So I'm very happy with this decision by Bethesda.

I love how we are cheering them on because they decided to do something (which we want) that will actually save them some money and time.

Voiced Protagonist is not something that I want, and should not be by any means a must-have. Much more important are deep dialogue options. I really hope that Bethesda is looking and working on this because Starfield (and Gamepass) is a reason why I'm buying a Series S

Good, the FO4 VO was so bad that I genuinely forgot it was even a thing until now. And I played 60 hours of that thing.

FUCK YES. Some may not like this, but this is actually the best possible decision for this game. I totally expected a voice protagonist this entire time because I didn't know to NOT expect them to do one, but this is very pleasant news indeed.

Thank fuck for that.

Hard to immerse yourself into a game when the character responds in a tone you would never use. I never used the male in Fallout 4 because I found the voice actor delivered his lines with way more snark than I liked. The female voice felt much more toned-down. I mean, I also was running body replacer mods that included physics for both the front bits and the rear, but the voice actor being better didn't hurt.

Yes it's a really good news, but it depends on the dialogue options in the game. If it's as bad as Fallout 4 it will have been for nothing and it would be just another lazy choice.

I've only ever played two first person games where a voiced protagonist worked.
Duke Nukem 3D and Dying Light. Neither is a role playing game.
This was the correct decision by Bethesda.

Please be NV dialogue options and not FO3.

FO3 sucks because even with little to no competence in certain skills, you can still save scum your way into all dialogue options with skill checks.

FONV not only allows you to see the exact amount of skills you need, it is also deterministic. What's more, certain dialogue options change or is available depending on your main stat allocations.

While Starfield isn't exactly a Fallout game, Fallout type dialogue allows the most expressive dialogue that incorporates your character traits and skills. What's more, now that you can assign certain characteristics like the background of your character, it allows for more diverse dialogue options.

Elder Scrolls on the other hand makes you feel like a blank slate. Sure there are dialogue options that turn up depending on your character's progression but it's more about what you've done in game storywise and not what your background before and the skills you've developed that matters in dialogue.

Essentially, what I'm saying is FO dialogue if used on Starfield, allows for the more diverse and effective role playing experience.

It was pretty obvious from the showcase but regardless...

Silent protagonist was one of the first mods I've installed in Fallout 4.

Let's hope that you can see the entire sentence in the dialogue selection. That will be one mod less to download!

Next step, make 8 bit games with low definition and call it triple A but say they are "retro"

Why does devs do extremes ? we either go from over talkative characters to mute ones... why not a balanced version ?
For me, the choice between voice and non voiced can be boiled down to what type of character you're trying to portray.

Do you want the character in question to be shaped by the player? Silent protag.

Does the game director/writer have a specific character in mind while making the story? Voiced protag.

By going balanced, it already tips into the favor of director/writer because any role playing of what the player had in mind will be overridden by what the studio wants.

If in my mind, I always imagined my character to have a gruff voice, the illusion is broken once I hear his voice and he has a different one.

It's a role playing game where you ROLE PLAY as a character you created. Having a voiced protagonist would be a disadvantage.

How people fail to understand that? Jesus Christ.

I actually didnt mind the Fallout 4 character having a voice, the problem though was that having a voice meant there were a lot less replies available compared to a usual Bethesda RPG.
I mean after the success of Skyrim you would of thought Bethesda would of spent a little more time and money and had the voice actor voice some more lines so we could get more options.

Having said that, a silent protaganist always works better in these kind of games imo.

Did you know that it is tech is so advanced nowadays you can have let's say 4 voices to choose from and can even adjust their tone etc... they just do not do it, not because it is complicated, not because of disk space but because they do not care.
