Sony and Microsoft Console Qualify

I have to say, both Sony and Microsoft did a great job with the quality of their respective consoles this generation.
The PS5 is a big step up over the PS4 and PS4 Pro. Much quieter and heavy duty. Very little complaints over reliability other than some coil whine.
They certainly addressed the cooling concerns coming off the back of the Pro and the higher clock speed of the PS5 APU.

Microsoft on the other hand is following on from the awesome build quality of the Xbox One X, and actually outdoing it with the XSX.
The cluster fuck that was the red ring of death has been well and truly made up for.
The XSX is a beast. It's even quieter than the One X, if that was possible.

Sony is one of the leaders of consumer electronics, so you kinda expect them to know how to build a box that doesn't overheat, breakdown or sound like a 747 taking off.
Microsoft on the other hand doesn't have that level of expertise, so what they have managed to do over the last few generations is very impressive.

But all up, hats off to Sony and Microsoft for putting out the reliable and quality boxes that they did.
There was no early adopter risk this gen with either.

I had to return my wifes launch PS5 because of pretty bad coil whine, little did I know it was likely a paper tab in the fan coil but it got replaced.

I just recently had my main launch Xbox Series X fail with part of whatever screen it was hooked to would be all green

But I do agree their quality is really good

I've had both side by side. It's quality. I tend to prefer online more with Xbox and Sony more for 1st player.

I agree with you. Both platforms are great. I spent the better part of the day on my PS5 and thoroughly enjoyed it.

One thing, though. Microsoft has been designing and building their own hardware for a good while now. The Surface line turned 10 years old this year. There really would have been no excuse for poorly designed Xbox hardware at this point.

We caught em all.
I got lucky with my PS5 as I've never noticed any Coil Whine, but it does make some creaks and pops when it's cooling down after turning it off.
The Series X is truly silent, especially now that I can turn off any beeps and startup music.

So far my XSS is super quiet and always works perfectly. My X1 VCR had horrific coil whine, especially on menus, I always figured it would break but it too still works just fine.

Xbox systems are rock solid since Xbox One. All super quiet. Xbox One was too big almost like a VCR, but One X and Series X (and S too) are compact. One X and Series X have a very good feel to them when you hold it. You can tell it's good build quality. When they are turned on you cant even tell.

When I unboxed my One X I was surprised by how heavy it was. The Series X looks like it would be heavy. The One X is surprisingly dense.

Yeah, the Xbox One X is still my favourite console.
For MS to release that after the OG One was incredible.
The compact size, the looks, the build quality, and the power. Ridiculous how good it was.

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
I sometimes wonder why I never get many controller issues, maybe it's because I don't play online shooters or something
my first dualsense drifted in 6 months, i personally fixed 4-5 times by cleaning the module, it helps to delay the drifting issue.
I just got my 2nd dualsense few months ago, so far no issue, hope it stays until the edge is out.

I don’t play shooters or fighting games. I don’t play anything that requires a lot of button mashing or 360 analog movement, yet it keeps happening. It’s even worse for the joy-cons, i bought one brand new in the package to play triangle strategy and before i finished the game it started drifting

No issues with XSX as a game console.
A bit loud as 4K Bluray player though, it’s the drive, there is a hum there that I can hear in silent scenes.

As for PS5. Unfortunately I have one of those squeeling PS5s people talked about around launch, no idea if it’s coil whine but it’s annoying.
Other than that, zero issues.

No controller issues on either one.

As someone who has owned 2 Series X, Series S, and a PS5 these are my impressions:

Series S is my favorite design its just a quiet little power efficient box. Lacks the disc drive and stuff so it's kinda bare bones, however. Most traditional console like of the 3 imo. The black fan grill kind of sticks out imo would look better all black.

Series X is my second favorite design it's sturdy, it feels rugged, it has a high build quality feel for me. No stand to bolt on and it can be turned either sideways or stand up easily. SUPER SUPER QUIET! Disc drive is also quiet... which leads me to PS5.

I got a Horizon PS5 1100 series with Disc drive and my first impressions were... wow.. its comically big. My next impressions were wow... it's comically loud. It's as loud as my old PS4 Pro was during gameplay imo. It has a horrible loud fan noise. Maybe I got a bad one but it's stupid loud and obnoxious. Next thing is the disc drive... which sounds like a barber shop pair of clippers. It's SO much louder than the Xbox Series X in comparison when reading discs. Which it does every single time you turn it on if you left one in.

I feel like Sony took cheaper parts and super overclocked them to the point where they run hotter than a pizza oven and then shoved liquid metal in and a fan that was designed to run at like 100% most of time... Rather than go for the safer route like MS did. I wonder how MS loses 200$ per console but sony is making a profit?

You def have a defective model then, I’ve never heard my ps5 outside of the beep when it turns on.

If my ps5 sounded like my ps4 pro i’d return that shit asap

It could be. I don't know anybody else who has one to see what theirs sounds like. Also worth noting that I have them on my desk with my PC so they're all right beside me while I'm using them. I can still return it to Walmart until January so maybe I should return it and wait for a slim.

One X is still the most sexy designed console imo. Just a tad more sleek than the Mega Drive 2.

Series X is a brick without any personality.

PS5 looks best from the side or behind a TV.

Doesn't have to be a defective model. PS5 currently has a fan lottery going on, and certain fans are much more quiet than others.

My brother in law and my friends PS5 are really quiet. I haven't had them side by side with my XSX but when playing the PS5 I didn't even think of if it was noisier than my XSX, so that tells me they were pretty close.
You might want to see if some thing is wrong with yours.

Only have a ps5, but the only issue I've had is sometimes I have to reinsert the USB cable in my controller to get it charge since it won't take the first time.

Startup music can be turned off?!

It looks to me that Sony really overcompensated in terms of cooling and size. Which is basically confirmed by their 2 revisions and also rumoured smaller model for next year. Also, there is a coil whine, which is not great.
Microsoft on the other hand did not have a badly build console from Xbox One S. Both Series X and Series S are excellent in terms of size and cooling. There was only one time I heard my Series X, while playing Metro Exodus. And even then I don't know why since it was in one exact spot and game was not rendering anything mindblowing.

Let's hope the eventual slim units follow this baseline.
Reliability issues and annoyingly loud is hopefully a thing of the past.

I wish i could say the same about the controllers. I’m on my 3rd dualsense
Yeah, while Sony did innovate their controller compared to Xbox... I feel the quality of both took a step backwards.

I went with the Series X and my brother got the PS5. He's on his 3rd dualsense as well. My Series X controller is still like new, but only because it has maybe 10-12 hrs on it at most as my elite V2 is still working so I've been using that. The one that came with the console feels significantly cheaper than even the standard Xbox One controller though.

My PS5 is loud. Well, not compared to a PS4, but it is very audible. Coil whine and some weird fan noise. The whine was there from the start, the fan has started sounding weird lately. Anecdotal of course, but from what I've gathered issues like this have been a lot more common with the PS5 than the XSX.

I am having drift issues.

I was as well on the right stick. I did get it solved though which I'm pretty chuffed about.

I sprayed some WD40 and turned and spun the stick around for a bit and it works like new. Must have been some dirt in the mechanism.

That's rough. I actually kinda hate the Xbox controller. The shape is fine, but the buttons are so clicky my girlfriend gets annoyed in a totally different room. Haven't had any issues with the Dualsense. DS4 was trash though in terms of longevity and I went through 3 of them.

I’ve had PS5 since January 2021 and it’s been silent the whole time. I had a PS4 Pro and that thing was a jet engine. It’s a huge upgrade. PS5 is the first system I set up vertically because it just looks better that way.

However, the build quality of the DualSense is abominable. I got my system in a GameStop bundle and was forced to buy a 2nd controller and both of those white ones have had issues with the joysticks. It’s just completely unacceptable considering I could plug in my DualShock from 1997 and It works flawlessly.

PS5 is Sonys best console to date, hands down. Great build quality, I've had no issues with coil whine or stick drift, no hardware failure or Dualsense breakdown. Everything's been smooth sailing since the day I got it. It's got great BC with PS4, enhancing damn near my entire library of games. And PS5 has a solid lineup of its own, with Demon's Souls, Returnal and Ratchet, along with cross gen gems like Death Stranding, Horizon, Final Fantasy 7 and GoW. I've had a blast two years in and it's only getting better.

I agree but Xbox series X design is boring. PS5 looks great but i'm not a fan of the black and white color thing, i guess they wanted to try something new but bro full black is just so much better.

My launch PS5 has a bit of coil whine but its not loud or bothersome. It is audiable when a couple feet away, otherwise its close to silent. Only the disc drive revs up like mad when starting up a game. My only caveat with the hardware is that due to its size and heft, it can cumbersome to move around and not the easiest one to maintain. To do stuff like upgrading internal storage or trying access all its IO at the back can be a little of an an annoyance. Also, thankfully never experienced any issues with my DS controller. What do you guys or gals do to your controllers to break them? Lol.

Other than that its a slick console with a ton of features. Probably up there with the PS2 in regards to build quality and reliability. Big step up from PS3/4 and its popping plastics (when playing a game) and their jet engine fans. And some excellent games despite only being in its second year. My only big gripe if that I would have liked more 'next gen' games on it rather than the crossgen we're still getting; from the big studio's. But it looks like we're near its end of PS4 support with that so things are looking even brighter for the console. Bring on 2023.

I feel like the only person who has never had stick drift with a controller before.

That being said with the launch Xbox one pads (before the S revision) I broke quite a few RB buttons, thank you free repairs though!
