First look at Redfall gameplay on Xbox Series X

I really can't help but feel like this game is being pushed out the door. The game looks like ass AND only runs at 30fps at launch? That should have been an easy decision to delay. This looks like it's being sent to slaughter just for the sake of releasing a game in the first half of the year.

Because if that isn't the explanation then what is? Did Arkane lose key talent? Do they just not care?
Probably management set a final deadline. They already delayed the game from last year, so probably wasn’t realistic to keep delaying while costs kept raising. They do care, but this is the best they probably can do.

Coming from Arkane, this is just unexpected. I knew the game was in a bit of a rough shape but I didn't realize how bad until these videos that they've been pulling very quickly.

Not just that but also the way Zenimax is aggressively copyright striking any video leaks… for a game that’s due out in 24 hours. Feels like if they had confidence in the game they wouldn’t care about people seeing minor bits of it a mere day and a half before release.
I think most companies would do that though. I’m 100% sure Nintendo will go after all the leaks that’ll happen before TotK is out, no matter how confident they are in it.

I still have hope it will actually be good, people have hated on this game hardcore from day one but if it’s the team that made Prey I don’t see how it won’t have something worthwhile about it

This is how most coop games are designed.

That aside, carry on everyone. I will be disappointed if this game got middling reviews.

Metascore needs to be either in 40s or 90s.
Not at all. Offline looter shooters, like Borderlands, carry across progress, and online looter shooters, such as The Division and Destiny, also carry across progress. Games like FarCry don't carry across progress, but FarCry is primarily a single player game, not a progression-focused looter shooter. From the initial reveal trailer onward, Arkane has positioned this as their spin on online-only multiplayer looter shooters. And I'm struggling to think of any online-only multiplayer-centric looter shooters where anything like this kind of progress roll-back happens.

I agree with the thought that Starfield has a lot to live up to, but I have never felt that way about RedFall. I can't believe this is Arkane's A team putting this out seeing as how Deathloop released 16 months ago. It's a B level game from a B level team.

Be aware that because I haven't followed the development closely, I may have my assumptions proven wrong. I am just going off of typical development cycle timelines. I'm still looking forward to it as it is something new, and I generally like the feel of an Arkaney game. Here is to hoping they capture that
Come on. This is the team that released Prey.

If people are willing to defend this then there's no better summation of how far standards have fallen in recent times.

It looks bloody awful.
Standards have fallen for the top echelon. For gamers, it is just a trickle-down effect.

Remember, Phil Spencer revealed this game as the "before we go, we have one more thing to show you" special announcement.

(could only found this reaction video; there is no separate clip for this)

I don’t get why Microsoft’s teams don’t collaborate, id and Coalition could turn this into an amazing visual feast but for some reason Arkane has clearly been left on their own here.
In an interview Bethesda boasted about how all the Bethesda teams would come together regularly and have showcases for each other to show the state of their projects and to get input from other teams. Have they skipped that here? Even small things like the outlines make it look bad. And aggressive enemies doing the same jump attack over and over and you can just walk backwards to avoid it?

Because there does seem to be any direction from any of the management just a bunch of yeah do whatever attitude without thinking of the final product profits or reception

The Coalition hasn’t released an iterative sequel in 4 years now (doesn’t seem to be on the immediate horizon either). They need to get their own house in order before looking after other studios. Nothing is cohesive inside the house of XGS.

Just seems like they all work in isolation. The reason Sony 1st party games hold such high standards is because they collaborate, they learn from each other. I guarantee that Naughty Dog helped Guerrilla to get third person animation right for example. Who helped Arkane with anything here? Microsoft has so many first person shooter devs and this is what we get?
Makes me worried that Bethesda hasn’t even had a peek at Fable and Playground who’re trying to make their first RPG/Adventure might do all kinds of first attempt mistakes.

When you grow this fast and acquire teams that haven't been working with you for years and are unfamiliar with how you operate, these problems are expected.

For as many memes people made of Jim Ryan's "organic growth" comment, people are realizing how right that strategy was, and that's what Xbox should have been following.

Because they are not using the same tech. How are other studios supposed to assist with tech they're not using or familiar with? Also, getting "input from other teams" during a showcase is entirely different from assistance in optimization.

Grabbing smaller teams or companies you've worked closely with for years makes it so much easier to integrate and grow together.

4 years for a AAA game is nothing out of the ordinary and they’re working with UE5 exclusively now which is a mountain to climb.
But they’re talented in general when it comes to visuals and I just think they should help out more, they’ve had time to hold talks at GDC to outside devs but they don’t have the time to help their internal buddy teams? And id is making arguably one of the most competent engines for performance and here we have another Bethesda team releasing a 30fps game ???

This game is similar to Farcry. It's story focused.

Borderlands let's you skip future content if you have joined and played missions ahead of your save point. This wouldn't work in a narrative focused game.

Overall this game is designed to be played either solo or a group of fixed friends with whom you play regularly so save file wouldn't matter, who has it.

Looks incredibly “run backwards in a straight line shooting them as they funnel toward you” if playing solo :/

You can give input on how to improve the visuals without having to dig deep into the code. I can do it right here from behind a browser. - Drop the outline! Makes everything look like some baby mobile game.

Well, ID Software help Arkane on Redfall : https://www.pcgamesn.com/redfall/id-software-support

you need the "correct" people
This is what it seems to me. The B team had a pop at a game

This in no way looks like anything Arkane has put out in the past. The damn thing looks like it moves akin to Killzone on the Ps3, it's got that awkward stiff movement, for a start. And those takedowns? We know Arkane can do takedown animations as Dishonored exists

The whole thing seems off..

Some real bullshitery happening here.

The outlines are there to highlight intractable objects. It's there for a reason and have been part of games for a long time. I have no idea why you associate them with “Baby mobile games”. It's especially common in games that take place in environments like RF.

It’s an online-only multiplayer focused looter shooter, according to the people who made it. I’ll let you tell them they’re wrong.

Because that’s what it looks like when they’re that highlighted. Why not just do button prompts?

But it's not a trait of mobile games. It's a common feature of co op shooters. Halo 3: ODST does it. B4B and the games that inspired it do it. Aliens: Fireteam Elite does it.

The highlights show immediately what intractable item you're looking at regardless of lighting conditions, and shows it from a distance, so you don't have to check every single item to see if it's something you can interact with.

For 30FPS doesn't look bad. The game feels boring as hell though, and the enemies all look the same.
