See it's stuff like this that shows Phil has no clue what he's talking about when it comes to making Xbox lead again, all it takes is a few bad showcases with no huge releases and for Xbox to have like 3 consistent good ones in a row with high quality game releases and they would be back in the game, it's a shame they have given it up to try and chase easy money trends because gamers are the ones who suffer :/. Earn our cash and we will show up.

You guys make this sound terrible. Heading home from a business meal to watch now....was it really that bad...?

What has Sony been up to?

People are saying "Welp, you just overhyped the event."

It's a *Showcase*. Not a State of Play.

In all years past, Showcases have been where there has been consistent heavy hitters, both in first and third party devs. It's become even more defined in the last year, where State of Plays were downplayed by Sony themselves in relation to a Showcase event

Here, we had CGI teasers for two games and an extended look at Spider Man. So, to my knowledge, after years Sony showed THREE games out of over TWENTY studios.

And they're GAAS. Like...why? It's obviously VERY much not liked by many people. Matter of fact, I'm pretty sure that's *exactly* why Suicide Squad got lambasted so badly.

I don't know what to think. Either they really just are that arrogant being top player or Microsoft busted out a fatter checkbook for more stuff at their show.

One can only hope for Microsoft to bring it, because they both NEED to and SHOULD easily beat this Showcase.

Comeback ? A comeback from what ? Winning ? Because in the competitive landscape of gaming, that's what they've been doing with PS5?

The problem, it seems to me, are your expectations. I'm not saying this to be combative, just to stress that you seem to be placing way too much emphasis on this singular showcase, when its just the start of the season.

Look at how the content was selected; it was a mixture of short term stuff (FF XVI, Street Fighter), far-off announcement reveals (Marathon, Metal Gear). Some AAA stuff from EA and Ubi, some indies, etc. etc. The commonality was that it had to be flashy and "cool looking", for want of a better description it took a "shock and awe" approach. Which was why there was so many cinematics and so little gameplay.

Its weird, do you expect Sony to show big titles/franchises that have been previously revealed at every showcase? Because that's absolutely not been their MO for a long time now. They reveal, skip a few opportunities, then spotlight again closer to release. The absence of Rise of the Ronin, or Death Stranding 2, or Silent Hill doesn't mean they've been cancelled or delayed.

If it was meant to "shock and awe", then someone should've told Sony that relying on mostly cinematics is not the way to do it. Did they not see the verbal assault Microsoft's taken multiple times since 2020 for doing the same thing at multiple events?

Ironically the best parts of the showcase were games that showed some decent amount of actual gameplay and stuff that looked like would be good showcases for the PS5 hardware. Phantom Blade 0 (which seems might be a console exclusive) was the best example of that. Alan Wake 2, Dragon's Dogma 2, AssCreed Mirage and Spiderman 2 were other examples of that, though to varying degrees not on the same level as Phantom Blade 0.

I'm just really, really surprised they had very little in terms of 1P games to show, especially non-live service/GaaS. Like how far off are some of those games, actually? Or is it more the case they just don't want to show them off quite yet? Not much way to tell right now.

What is the chance this was joke and we gonna have a showcase only for ps studios? What bend is doing in 4 years? 3 years from last nd and sp games. They have nothing to show? Guerrilla? Media Molecule? Asobi Team? There is something wrong really.

IntentionalPun

Ask me about my wife's perfect butthole
oh....these people exist here too?
What's that supposed to mean?

I'm not even the biggest fan of Sony's games.. but they are sort of objectively killing it as far as putting out games that review incredibly well and have wide appeal.

I just don't give 2 shits about seeing a game way before it's out... so I don't mind Sony's modern style of mostly waiting until a few months before release to show shit.

I gave the showcase a D BTW... but that's not really reflective of Sony's actual output, is my point.

So is Factions basically in development hell? Wasn’t launched with TLoU II, span off in to something bigger. Game play leaked online about, what, 2 years ago? Radio silence except for a bull shot last year on the official Twitter page?

WTF is going on with this game if it’s not coming this year?

if i dont see THIS LOGO NEXT im fucking losing it. COME ON
How you dare to ask for that in a PLAYSTATION showcase??

Let's just say the 1P presence was very lacking, especially for anything non-live service/GaaS. And not the degree of big 3P AAA reveals you'd expect (although there were a few strong ones).

Also Spiderman 2 looks good...great in some parts. But IMO was not a noticeable visual leap you'd expect from a PS5-only 1P AAA game, particularly since (IMO) Rift Apart looks better on the whole and is almost two years old at this point.

This is what happens when you don't have a real competitor lol Marathon and Phantom Blade the only cool things. It felt like a State of Play lol We all know they couldn't go crazy with FFXVI and Spiderman at the horizon but at least show Factions or something. They need a big Playstation Experience in november/december to give us "phase 2" because after Spiderman 2 (the trailer was baaaad) we have virtually nothing to be hyped for (wolverine?Factions?SantaMonica?Cory? all desaparecidos). Probably one of the worst big events of the last 5 years.

It's definitely arrogance/saving money while in the lead, Xbox did it with the 360, Sony has had it twice with Ps3 and our current era, and Nintendo has had it several times. The greedy mothers are always banking on an unbreakable monopoly instead of just playing it safe by making sure to keep making it an actual great ecosystem with great games.

What has Sony been up to?
yes. shockingly bad. (not necessarily a because of the games)

i wonder if:

A) Are they having issues in paradise?
B)Are they are holding on?
C) Are they just pivoting in messaging?

I honestly cant believe what im watching. This is worst than anything Philbo has ever given us. If this is the future of playstation then i want nothing to do with it. If this is the future of gaming then im clearly not the target demographic.

They said millenials spend more time and money on video games than gen z and gen x. And yet this trash is clearly not aimed at me. This is all indie trash or fornite nonsense. WTF. One game after another.

Now a minecraft game. Im done.
What is popular now amongst teens and kids (battle royal/FIFA aside) is stuff like Rust, Terraria & Ark.

I don’t get it personally. But yeah. That’s where we are.

It's social games, most mainstream gamers only enjoy gaming because it's a way to hang out with friends. Not to mention it's the groups that grew up on Minecraft and it's probably most of thier favorite games so they want to play games with those types of elements.

If that's the case then I hope it's a showcase they do for later in the summer.

Or maybe they gave Geoff their big 1P reveals? Would be a weird decision but weirder things have happened.

There's some trouble for sure. Naughty dog are a single player studio. Making a multiplayer only game was always gonna be a rocky road.

You only have a finite amount of minutes on this earth. Don’t waste any of them watching this.

Just YouTube the trailers for Marathon, Dragon’s Dogma, the Journey sequel, and Plucky Squire. Oh and Metal Gear if you like that.

The other 50 minutes of trailers?

Besides Spiderman 2 and FFXVI (possibly temporary), was there any other exclusive to PS5 in today's show?

Seemingly Phantom Blade 0 since in Xbox's dig at the Showcase for all the multiplat games, it and the MGS Collection were missing.

And you KNOW they'd of loved to rub those in as multiplat if they actually were.

Gave it a D as an average. There was some good stuff in the show I'm interested in, like the WiiU controller for PS5 with full Dualsense features, as that will be an instant buy for me to get more gaming time, but the delivery of the showcase was pure garbage and there was too much that shouldn't have been greenlight even for a development idea, never mind making it to a showcase

I think the biggest issue with the industry today is that they all hang out at that other place and it is melting their brains. Without the normal combative discussion we have here at GAF - to properly critique - the industry lacks the feedback to weed out the chaff from the wheat.

And the format/delivery of the show is so weak because without E3 they've lost the art of how to deliver under real pressure. Putting a few shitty games in a showcase video stream and them completely missing the mark has no live embarrassment pressure attached, so they don't check, double check and triple check that what they are showing is compelling - like they would for an E3 - to ensure they avoid that excruciating outcome.

Nowadays, they just chuck it in the reel, hit play, and react apathetically when we on gaf comment that what they are making and showing isn't good enough for PS3 pricing, never mind today's value adverse situation.

Some cool 3rd party games but lack of updates from 1st party puts this as a C. I really wanted to see TLOU online. That would have bumped the showcase by 1 or 2 grades for me.

But you need to view it in full. The mediocre parts make the few juicy morsels all the tastier.

It felt like there was nothing juicy though. Even spider-man 2 left me underwhelmed. The only thing was that ninja game. MGS3 was a nothing trailer so it doesn't really count for anything. I never expected such a bad showing from Sony. It felt like a Microsoft show. It's worrying for the future. When was the last time sony has a big show that was so bad?

It's like a Knicks game. Hoping to retain the lead only to drop it in the 4th quarter.

Twas a solid showing, tons of new IPs revealed, sequels to some amazing games, holy shit Dragons Dogma 2, Marathon revival, Alan Wake II and greatest game of thes show, aka GOTG, no GOTD, no...GOATG! lol METAL GEAR SOLID 3 REMAKE and remaster collection for those who love to cry

This showcase had a little of everything and if someone didn't find something they liked, you are jaded lol I'm not even buying everything shown, not everything is for me, I think gamers have a hard time dealing with that as they seem to have this view like every last thing MUST be FOR THEM. This is a solid, solid showing with games that I feel, folks would literally ask for at the end of these types of things, like "boooo, where is Dragon Dogma 2" or "booo where is MGS3 remakez" or "woooow just Destiny, where is Marathon" or "wooooowz /s just Alan Wake 2, where are the new IP?"

I feels like people like this simply look to complain about what wasn't shown or have some exact game they are looking for or something and then try to judge the whole event based on Xenogears remake not being shown, folks....if it was shown like MGS3 remake, you'd just find another thing to complain about.

Not shocked the full meat of it was for Spiderman 2, they will market other stuff as they get closer and closer to Spiderman 2 release before they start the next huge marketing window.

Death Stranding 2, Concord, The Last Of Us MP etc.

SantaC SantaC lol yesssssssssss! 100% this. The fact that someone was already to complain about no Spiderman 2, edits their post, then goes on to complain about some other shit proves our point completely.

Pantz Pantz It was super necessary to show Concord like this as a teaser. Many asking "whats the point" are the some ones that would cry about a downgrade or complain about development time. I'm fine with how that was revealed.

Its a new IP, get the teaser out to generate interest, focus on its full reveal after Spiderman 2's marketing campaign is done following its release or Death Stranding 2 (as that could be the next game they start to market more of). What I don't want is development time spent forcing the team to make some build if the game isn't ready, only to have many changes based on it still being early, then to have folks cry about a downgrade.

Reveal it when its ready, tease it when its time to generate interest. New IPs take longer to market, they are new, they have lots to convey vs something like Spiderman where its an existing universe where we get the hunter character, Lizard man etc For example, you couldn't even fucking show a trailer 100% like that if Spiderman was some brand new concept, lizard who? why the fuck do we care? They'd need to tell you Spiderman got his powers this way, Lizard man is a Scientist that knows Peter that tested on himself to regenerate his arm etc With it being known, its smoother to show such a trailer like we saw. So this makes sense to show a teaser, drip feed info, generate info until a full, 100% reveal is ready.

Just watching it, but the comments here don't bode well. Why is it so hard to develop a new Sly Cooper, Ape Escape or proper crazy SSX game for this console?!

I am so happy that I skipped the PS3 and PS4 gens so that I have plenty of past games to enjoy on my PS5, but not having anything super exciting next gen on the near horizon is rather poor.

I don’t think Fairgame$ is being ridiculed enough. Fucking Champaign Socialist drivel. Bland, generic, thought up by some rich stuck up idiot. Is this really what Sony’s first party wants to be?

When’s the next counter culture scene coming our way? Christ. We need it.

The team and I are super excited to finally unveil the project we’ve been working on here at Haven. Our first new IP, Fairgame$, is a fresh, modern take on the heist genre. In a nutshell, this is a thrilling competitive heist game where you join an underground movement to rob the ultra-rich and rebalance the scales.

I’ve always been passionate about creating new IPs that offer a sense of mystery and a window into different subcultures of society. In many ways, I feel like my own experience, and the collective experience of our entire team, creating new IP and working on captivating multiplayer games, has led us here. Fairgame$ will give you an opportunity to break the rules as a modern-day Robin Hood, a thrill seeker, or just someone who wants to collect cool loot. Trespass inside forbidden locations around the world, fill your pockets like a kid in a candy store and unravel the nefarious plans of untouchable billionaires.

We founded Haven with the goal of making the kind of games we all love to play. As huge fans of competitive multiplayer experiences, Fairgame$ came from a desire to create a new type of PvP game with emergent sandbox gameplay. We want to deliver a fresh multiplayer experience that rewards creativity and mastery and delivers surprising stories each and every time you play.

Every member of our team shares our vision to create welcoming and inclusive multiplayer experiences that glue communities together. This shared enthusiasm is the driving force behind our heist fantasy – how it really encourages you to work together in crews to plan and execute epic heists in the style and fashion you want.

Fairgame$ will be coming to PS5 and PC, and we hope you are as excited about the game as we are. For now, we are heads down and focused on bringing Fairgame$ to life and we will share more as soon as we can.

I would like to send a special shout out to the entire team at Haven for their exceptional work and the passion they bring to everything they do.

Wow. A lot of anger in this thread.
I haven't watched the showcase and after reading that there's a lot of CGI I will NOT watch it.
These company should stop using CGI and just show the game in it's reality and not what you wish it could be or want people to think it will be.

I agree with what you're saying. But I can't help but to feel we semi overhyped ourselves as well as insiders making it sound like this was going to be a gold star of a Showcase. I don't recall Sony ever saying we were seeing any of the games we were looking forward to hearing updates from. All in all it just means that even as hype as a Showcase can be, you have to go in with low expectations.

I still believe some of the big games have been reserved for Summer Game Fest. Even though it wasn't much, TLOU Multiplayer and TLOU Part 1 were announced there.

A Sly Cooper announcement would have gotten me to buy a PS5 tonight.
