FINAL FANTASY XVI | Prologue DEMO

The only moment where english clive was a bit meh\cringe was in the very end when he screams for you know what, pretty sure that part sound much better in jap.
That was real.

I mean seriously. He lost his dad at that point during production and an emotional wreck. That was 100% from the heart.

Favourite bit of voice acting to me actually. Especially after having heard the backstory.

Yeah, I’m no expert but I heard their method was different than how they did with FFVIIR and they tried the AI for Japanese lip-sync but it didn’t worked out so they just scrapped it.

Oof game is preordered but this is lowering my hype quite a bit.

Why? Do you know Japanese? The demo didn’t show any glaring moment where the audio and lips are completely out of synch. If you are reading subtitles you probably won’t even notice.

I dont but I played ghost of Tsushima in Japanese it drove me mad that the lips didnt match.

I don't know, noticed that immediately. In the beginning cutscenes there are plenty of moments when animation already stoppped while voiceover is still on and vice versa, it's very noticeable even reading subs.

That's just what I was going to say.
It sounds awful in english. Japanese seems more consistent.

just quickly popped on that battle theme again to listen, im all sorts of hyped for this game. I hope it lives up to the grandeur it's advertising. would be bummed if it's a 10 hr game with some padding.

Just checked it out on YouTube. Didn't want to play the demo before the release. It's not as bad as GOT but it still drags the overall experience down. Iam thankful that I saw this before I actually played it. So I can experience my dissapointment before I play it.

Why not just play in English? It was recorded in English first and the devs recommend even Japanese players to play with English audio. Seems weird to play a European Medieval game in JPN when you don’t speak it lol

I mean other European languages are also from the table if English is the only one correctly synced.

Japanese is more emotional 9 out 10 cases that's the reason I prefer it tho.

Yeah, Ben Starr the actor (HUGE Gamer, spoke vividly about beating Yiazmat in FF XII back on PS2) mentioned as such in a press tour he recently did. Don't remember which specific interview it was though, sorry :messenger_anxious:.
His latest appearance was in the Friends Per Second podcast where he told about how he got the role and how he lost his shit after discovering it was for Final Fantasy. He said his first Platinum was FFXIII, one of the grindest in the series. This was his first job in the gaming industry and he seems interested in doing more gaming-related jobs in the future.

Yea, but GoT is set in feudal Japan. So it's understandable to prefer the Japanese audio for that authentic cultural immersion.
If you don't even speak Japanese why would you be concerned about this in FFXVI's case, with its heavily European-inspired setting?
It's not like you can properly appreciate all of the nuances in the performances in the Japanese dub. You'll just be reading the bottom of the screen half the time.

I mean I know where you are coming from but If I have to pick an european language I would go with my native language which seems sub par compared to englisch as well.
Anyway still wanna play it but Iam definitely dissapointed.

Played the demo several times-- Amazing!! The demo along is my game of the year so far. Blasphemous 2 and Armored Core 6 may change this for me, but as of right now, I'm pretty blown away (based on the demo).

After reading about the supposed "boycott" I decided to try the demo. I wasn't going to buy the game until much later but I'm reconsidering since D4 doesn't seem like it's going to hold my attention as much as I'd hoped.

Had to stop at the start of the goblin mission due to work but I'm liking it a bit more than I thought I would. Long intros with little real gameplay tend to bore me even if they're necessary to set the stage for the rest of the game but I never found myself wanting to skip past anything like I usually do. Voice work, dialogue and scene direction were all great and kept me engaged and I'm interested in where the story goes.

SQEnix has made it hard for me to support them for a while now. Seems Yoshi-P is the chosen one. FF14 is the only other thing developed by SQEnix that I've liked in a long time.

I actually like the second Japanese line more than the English here. It's more realistic, but both are good.
Arguably not though. That women is a giant flying WMD. Not something thats a surefire thing to go up against.

Its also the only reason she’s on it. They are not allowed otherwise. (Which I assume the original intent to hint at was, but again she’s fucking Shiva. What kind of gender you have or if you even are a person barely matters at that point.)

Edit: To give an example. It’s kind of like if in AOT somebody was saying *It’s a female titan. WE GOT THIS.* Which might have happened I don’t remember, but its why I actually kind of prefer the english line here.

TokTK and Starfield realizing there's a new contender in GOTY town:

Melting Hot Dog GIF
Even if it doesn't end up getting as many awards & accolades, it'll likely be my personal GOTY.
I know this year is packed with great titles, but I haven't been this excited the week of release in a long time.

Having said that, the demo seems to have been well-received by a lot of FF fans and newcomers alike, so FFXVI won't go unappreciated.

Geez, this game is filled with content, NG+ at launch, lots of side quests, lots of hunting, i may put at least 150 hours into this game.

This level of content and polish is something rare nowadays, day f one

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
I said 95, and I will stick with it.
95 for a Final Fantasy, what the fuck

Edit: I mean, don't get me wrong. I personally would rate many FF mainline games 95+, but this is Metacritic we're talking about. It's not going to get 90, let alone 95.

Yea I agree. It could be the best game ever but the this isnt ff guys are gonna be slamming it down. It will still review well tho.

I mean some of the FFXIV expansions did get around 92 metacritic which is absolutely insane for a FF-game today. So let's hope it'll be reviewed around there!

Awesome expansion but it didn't had all the mainstream media go above it. I predict high 80, no matter how good it is.

I've been playing the demo in Quality mode and am shocked people are talking about input latency on this one for a jump of all things that requires latency for crouch, leap, airborne. The animation lengths and transitions seem so snappy the game in Quality is a match or better than Demon's souls remake for input latency in 60fps performance mode from my experience, and Demon's souls remake is in GOAT level gaming IMHO.

I've only every played the FF7 remake before, but this looks like another buy for me.

What are u talking ? Its not like FF games dont get 90+ on MC.

FF9: 94
FF7: 92
FFX: 92
FFVI: 92
FFXII: 92
FFXIV: 92
FFVIII: 90

FFXVI could get over 95 without any problem and i think a 90± is guaranteed

So I feel like the game has pretty clearly telegraphed...

Plot speculation below:

That Clive was the out of control Ifrit at the start and killed his own brother, right? Like how he wasn't instantly incinerated like Rodney, you don't actually see him again in the scene even when he's talking at the end, weird shit happening in his head just before.

If that's supposed to be a big reveal much later I'll be disappointed, lol.

All of the above are OLD games with only critic reviews from times of the past when Sakaguchi held the reigns. It's no surprise FF games were rated 90+ when they were held as the DEFINED games of said genre.

The only game on that list that isn't part of my statement is FFXII and XIV.

Here, let me help your jaded mind what Final Fantasy games usually score around in todays era. We ARE in 2023, not 2002, right?

If Final Fantasy XVI scores a 90 on Metacritic, that's fan-fucking-tastic. Trust me (I've been playing games of this franchise longer than the majority of people on this forum have existed), I would be the happiest guy on this planet. However let's not jest ourselves by thinking Final Fantasy games (even the solid ones) are immediate 90+ on Metacritic. There is for example a reason to why people were exhilarated with joy when FFVII Remake reviewed the way it did; simply put because FF games don't get 90+ today - and a 87 was WELL above what people were expecting. Set your expectations around these parts, not fucking TotK-levels.

Anyone going to replay the early hours of the game when the game launches?

Excited Season 3 GIF by The Simpsons
I'm considering it, but if the Trophies pop for any early game stuff then I might just try continuing straight off of the demo progress, which would be my first time doing so. I know it might seem petty but I like getting Trophies and Achievements and don't want to miss them. I also played through the demo twice and was glued the whole time so the story is still quite fresh in my mind. If there was additional story beats or something then I might but otherwise I'm leaning towards no.

FF VII Remake not being +90 MC is criminal, imo

Incredible, polished game

Oh and FF XII has 92 MC.

You posted the Zodiac Age version for the PS4, kinda not fair

Because it looks anime as fuck? From the direction to the characters, to the writing? Yes it’s inspired by medieval fantasy, sure, but it’s very clearly a Japanese game and story written and developed by Japanese. The casting in the Japanese VA destroys the English VA, as it blends with the aesthetic and tone of everything else while the English VA sounds miscast at almost every turn.

It is absolutely fair because 1: he included the GBA version of FFVI and 2: Zodiac Age PS4 is VERY MUCH relevant here because it was reviewed when Metacritic actually was ’relevant’ in comparison to the old days.
