The possible console PS5 Slim leaked? (Update: possible video)

Yes, current DE pricing and basically $400 being their main SKU going into the holidays vs slim pickings to get one now due to two different production lines.
I think it’s a pretty smart move by Sony, they really outdid MS this time , they are stuck with the Series S spec for the digital version , time for them to drop the parity clausule.

I don't think they will discontinue the regular PS5, just the DE model.
The only thing they would be making after this comes to market. Is this version. Both the digital and current disc versions would be discontinued. It literally makes no sense having this version, the disc drive add-on and an OG PS5 disc version.

This would most likely be $399,disc addon will probably be $100. If you were buying a digital PS5, you end up paying the same thing. If you were buying a disc-based PS5, you are paying the same thing with this too. For sony, it means they only have to make one console.

The drive will be $99. So if you want a PS5 with a disc drive, you’re still paying $500.

I never said that wasn't the case.

But plates that are not necessary to play physical games are going to be treated differently.

Some people won't even buy a PS5 if they can't play physical copies on it. Which was my case BTW.

And there are consumers that won't buy a digital only system.

I know many won't care about physical copies but there's still a market for them. Sony can't make the drive so expensive that many will refuse to buy a PS5 due to its price.

Now faceplates that's something else.
There are still so many games I will play through one time and never play again, why would I want a digital only copy that I just delete when I could get a disk and at least get something out of it return

And it doesn't matter to me if its $10 its the idea of it to me that means more

I usually get better deals with physical copies. Either with price reductions or buying one second hand. Also I like just collecting disks which I know sounds dumb to some people. I'm the same way with movies.

Yep. My Steam account is littered with games that I haven’t played in years.
Which is why I broke the habit years ago and no longer add "free" games from these services that I know I will never play. Packrat hoarding digital is still just that.

Well how popular is an all digital PS5 in the first place? If people don't want the new model and add ons typically fail like you said then that means many won't get it due to it requiring an add on to play physical copies.

I personally don't see it failing either way. I really don't see the PS5 + Disk Drive failing because people still want physical copies. This isn't like the situation with Sega where the CDs were not available since launch. Asking people to buy an add on to play them when they already have cartridges is a bit different than this situation.

I'm happy that you clarified things though.
Id have to know how many digital consoles vs disc versions were manufactured total. I actually wanted the All digital because i loath useless installation discs and useless clutter cases, but ended up lucky enough to get the disc version launch day.

Find it hard to believe if the manufacturing were 1:1 people wouldn’t have opted to save that 100 bucks.

Physical games sone exist anymore, they install to the SSD then only became clutter, pain in the ass physical DRM where you have to switch discs every time you want to play something new. What they SOULD have sone is made the original all digital model cheaper and offered an affordable add a disc drive for those minor amount of people who still believe they own physical games.

You can sell them and loan them, they are also cheaper most of the time. Savings > clutter.

I'm not a fan of the ps5 design or this new revision of it, I'd go so far as to say it's the ugliest playstation console.

Looks are obviously subjective, but the sheer size is what I can’t get over. I understand why they needed to make it so big, but I still don’t like it one bit.

I bet you would like it much better if it was 15-20% smaller

Well there's a reason why Sony didn't make the production 1:1. It's because there's still plenty of demand for physical copies if we are talking about consoles.

Missing out on all the fun because it’s not 100% unnoticeable is crazy lol. Guess you also don’t have a tv in your room. Hideous black object in the room. Can’t have a sofa too, somehow it’s too noticeable 🥹.

Good luck with your empty room while the rest of the world enjoys all the objects that make those rooms fun 😁.

I have a frame Samsung matte TV, the vast majority of my viewing is done in a dedicated theatre room however that’s black floor to ceiling.

I know, being a builder, designer by occupation and caring about these things just means no fun allowed in life.

Yes... is pretty normal for every adult straight male care more about roon fashion than their fun ...

Why are you assuming my sexuality? Labelling me as a straight male? Then labelling straight males as uncaring about their environment?

All these things are highly unjust.

😂

I don't get it... I really don't see what the issue is here. You are making something out of absolutely nothing..

If you buy a PS5 Disc edition, you are paying $499. Or paying $399 for the digital PS5, those are the two choices available right?.

How is that different from this new version? You buy the new PS5 for $399.Which comes without a disc drive, but if you want a disc drive, you have a choice to buy the add on for $99. At the end of the day, your net spend is still $499. The choice is still there. Its just that now its been shifted from two separate consoles to just one console and you just buy a disc add-on for it if you want to play physical games.

People act like this new PS5 suddenly means the option to be a physical-only gamer is no longer there. Or like some sort of choice has been taken away when in truth, this is what they should have done from launch in 2020. Because this way, EVERYONE has the option to get a disc drive if they wanted to. As it stands, if you bought a digital PS5, you are stuck with that forever.

This is a better, more elegant way to do this. And they really should have done this back in 2020 when they launched the console. Though I know why they didn't.

If the Disc Drive is part of the cover now, then it definitely means there will be no more covers. We only got ONE special edition cover (spider man 2) which was sold out immediately, and not being restock, means they are really going for the new model.

It sucks! The PS5 was the first console to allow 100% customization and they get rid of it. The external drive should be that, a separate box. I imagine, like many have said, that this could've been their original vision but they couldn't do it. It's very obvious that they designed the Digital Edition first because it's symmetrical, and the disc PS5 looks like an add-on.

If the console of the video is real, the new model looks to be just a little bit smaller, but not something to call it slim. The PS5 slim term was coined by rumors, but definitely not the intended route Sony was planning at all. This will be a PS5 that happens to be a bit smaller. Sony's goal has to be to just make one SKU.

IMO, I think ALL Playstation versions since the PS3 have been uglier or worse than the original.

PS3 launch model was amazing, then the slim was more cheaper-looking. Still good, but definitely worse. The second slim is trash.
PS Vita redesign was also worse. No OLED and had the frame looking bad.
PS4 launch model was great. Slim looked bad, PRO looked a little bit better because it was the same size as the OG, but still worse.
Now, the PS5 is getting a worse version.

I’m not loving the continuous push to an only digital future for consoles. This PS5 refresh is another stepping stone towards that future. Unfortunately it seems inevitable…

U guys have it wrong here, Sony will still have disc version, it’s just gonna be digital slim, with disc add on included, digital slim is gonna be the with no drive included. The is just going to help manufacturing costs as they only have one console to make,

Are you comparing 2 SKU with an add on and still confuse?

If you're already confused, imagine the consumers.

what are you talking about/who is confused? What is confusing?

That consumers will buy the PS5 thinking it will play physical games.

But to be honest I think Sony will do something to make that very clear. Plus even if they do make a mistake it will provably be very easy to fix.

I remember the NVME was supposed to be a big headache for consumers but that didn't really happen. I think consumers will be fine understanding the purpose of the disk drive.

The detachable disc drive is an amazing idea.PS 5 digital edition costs Sony probably 300 dollars to make and ship max 350.The disc drive version 10-20 dollars more. Now to build the PS5 got even cheaper for Sony and every Console is digital. The ones who want to have discs must buy the additional drive which will probably be either 50 dollars or 100.The driv costs Sony probably a few dollars to make so they make major profits that way.And for the ones who stay with the digital edition better for Sony every game sold especially first party games whole money goes to Soney no shipping no producing no Walmart or other stores gets money for selling the game.Absolute win for Sony in every way.Incredible smart business decision.

But that is the beauty of this. Because the PS5 can play physical games. They just have to go out and buy the disc drive too. They have a choice.

Looks like a knock off that will be sold with emulators and roms.
You could be totally right. Rotating a ps5 with one hand so casually and fast isn't possible unless you got tree trunk forearms. Unless it really is that big of a difference but all the reports are that it isn't necessarily a slim model just a different one.

I wonder if the external disk drive will be future-proof and be compatible with PS5 Pro if they follow the only-digital single SKU, or even PS6.

Let's say I want to buy PS5 "slim" + the external drive, and one day I decide to keep the latter, sell the console and buy PS5 Pro, or wait and buy PS6. I'd really like to use the external drive with the newer console(s). Realistically, PS5 Pro compatibility is very possible, PS6 maybe not as a digital-only future for gaming is unavoidable.

people who want to use discs will have to cough up another $50-100 :messenger_tears_of_joy: if you want a PS5 and in the year 2023 still want to use ancient technology then you better grab a PS5 asap before these models disappear because with this new model Sony is making physical game buyers pay more. good strategy to push people to digital and prepare them for the all digital PS6 lol
It amazes me how people like to be scammed with the prices of those digital stores, it amazes me even more that people is fine having less choices.....

I will repeat it again, with all the money I've saved buying physical copies of the games compared with the digital prices I could say that I got my Ps5 for "free" since I've saved more than 700€.... But hey stay with your overpriced games with your all digital console while I still use "ancient technology"

Disappointing. Guessing the pro will be similar to the current model in size. Think I’ll stick to my launch console until it breaks or there is a complete design change

Just try imagine what you said in the consumer pespective.

'Hey, I want to buy a PS5 to my kid.'
'Here'
'This play disc games? My son have a bunch of PS4 games.'
'Sorry sir, you need to buy the disc drive separately.'
'Do you sell this too or what?'

For the best solution, the PS5 slim will come with disc drive, but this time have an option to remove if you wish. Only if this is the case I can see they replacing both the regular PS5 and the PS5 DE. If they gonna sell the PS5 slim without the disc drive, imo just the DE should go because both PS5 slim and DE share the same fate of not having disc drive, having option or not would fool the consumer in the moment of buy the console.

They will probably sell them with or without. but The drive will be bundled in a separate box

You are overthinking this. I am sure it would be clearly written on the box, and promoted/advertised in store...etc how it all works. I am also sure that any retailer that has the console in store, will no doubt have the disc drive add-on as I am sure the disc drive add-on required would be boldly printed on every physical game box going forward. I would even go as far as saying that most retailers oud even bundle the drive at a discount if you buy like two or three games along with it. Retailers need you to buy that add-on, as physical games are how they make their money.

This makes absolutely no sense. If every PS5v2 comes with a removable disc drive, then they should just make the console with a disc drive and discontinue the digital version.

But doing that forces EVERYONE to pay for a disc drive even if they do not want one. Furthermore, whether you would like to admit it or not, physical media is going out, as it stands digital sales edge physical sales currently and digital storefronts make more money for platform holders and publishers alike. Not saying digital is better, just that you shud expect the industry to always follow and/or push consumers to what/where makes them the most money and for the lowest risk.

All that aside, the absolute best strategy is what they are doing. Its the least complicated, cheapest, and easiest to understand. Every PS5 going forward will come without a disc drive. With the option to every new PS5 owner to get the disc drive for their console if they so choose. The disc drive is now basically a peripheral and would be treated and sold like every other peripheral before it.

And I don't know how you see this, but do you really think people outside of paces like GAF/ERA....etc care about a disc drive in their console? I am willing to wager (not really obviously) that 8 out of every 10 people that buy the PS5 would do so because it costs $349/$399 or whatever and completely forgo the $100 disc drive add-on even though they are aware of it. I dare say most people would sooner spend that $100 on an SSD expansion.

There's a pretty big symbol on the front and top of the PS5 DE box that makes it very clear it can't play discs, I imagine they will have a similar one on the new model:

Mine only has the scandinavian languages but I assume it's the same everywhere.

Again, you guys are confused and trying to confuse.

What you showing me is the PS5 Digital Edition BOX, if someone buy this by mistake the PS5 DE they can simple back to the shop and buy the regular PS5 and pay the difference. This happens A LOT, more in the Xbox case than the PS5 because Xbox have a bunch of SKUs.

Now, what about the PS5 slim? Will come with disc drive or not? If not, are they gonna sell another SKU with the disc drive or the shop will sell a bunch of separete disc drives with the Playstation logo? If so, why do we need to buy the official disc drive if everyone could replace with generic ones? What the box of the PS5 will suggest?

Those are the questions. There will be no more 2 SKUs (PS5 + PS5 DE), instead you guys are suggesting replace 2 SKU with one single SKU that have the ability to replace a disc drive, but are consumers asking those question before buying? Is easy for us from a gaming forum to understand those questions, but in a consumers pespective this can be very confusing.
