Now you're actually catching up to the conversation from over a year ago, and I'll give you credit that you're actually the only person in the thread that seems to actually be concerned about a potential monopoly and lack of competition.

So now, how do you fix the unusually sticky hyper market consolidation if traditional competition metrics no longer work? Price cuts and cheaper system doesn't work. PS raises the price and sales go up. Cheaper games day 1 on GP doesn't work. PS raises the price of games and sales go up. What would you do to save the gaming industry from being locked to the PSN digital storefront almost exclusively? I propose (over a year ago) that you allow the Activision merger. PS will always have Call of Duty, but now MS has secured enough revenue that they will be profitable without question and they aren't going anywhere. They can keep experimenting to see if anything works and the console industry will still have competition.

We were that close to the edge of the cliff, but the gaming industry was saved with the Activision / MS buyout. Jim Ryan nearly had us all.
Why can't Microsoft make games games people want to buy? Why is the answer anything but that?

So your idea would be to force people to buy a product they DON'T want otherwise it's a monopoly???

Do you know how the FREE market works???

It's not Sony's fault if there is ZERO demand for Xbox hardware and software. It's their own fault

Really bad reading honestly, not trying to insult you. Xbox isn’t losing market share to just PlayStation, they are losing market share to Nintendo and Steam too. Some of this is down to releasing games day 1 on PC, some is down to the failures of Xbox One, some is down to the failures of Series X because we are three years into the gen and Xbox Studios still haven’t released the kind of hit game that makes people take notice.
Wait :lollipop_yum:
Playstation, Nintendo, Steam..... ??
All of them are Xbox 🙅‍♂️
Xbox's market share and engagement is increasing at an accelerating rate💍🙆‍♂️

mmmm but how many times did Nintendo Switch and XBS beat the PS5 in monthly sales during 2022?

I live in the UK and own a Series X but I think it's time to trade it in against a PS5.
Does anyone know when the slim version arrives in the UK?

"Compared with September, overall market sales are up nearly 16%, PS5 sales are up 11%, Switch sales are up 10% and Xbox sales are down just under 20%."
Am I stupid and don't see something obvious here or do these percentages not stack up??

Is that the dude from Vsauce?
Which video is this from?
lol yeah I don't remember where I had it from. Could be a shoop

This is no where near a monopoly.

A de facto monopoly is what Microsoft enjoys in the the massive and important PC OS and office space. No one says anything about that any more since that's just the way it's been for a very long time.

Forza Motorsport (No.42)

Forza bombed hard. Number 42 in its launch month. ALso, Starfield vanished with zero legs.

Also, how the hell is Xbox down -52% YoY when last year was supposed to have shortages of supply? Such bullshit from MS. Remember all those claims from MS fans that the Series X was sold out and the main reason why sales were low? LOL

The best selling Xbox console last year has always been Series S that NEVER had any shortage of supply in 3 years

Of course they are not gonna tell us about it

Most of us knew this but it was funny seeing all those damage control in the sales thread. The Xbox fans claimed that having enough of Series X consoles would boost Xbox sales. Now it is the opposite of what they claimed with a decline in sales.

It's the same with Starfield. They thought the game was supposed to boost Xbox sales somehow. Yet, sales are much worse than last year.

You mean when PS5 wasn't on shelves???

Great metric considering that Series S has ALWAYS been available
It's just to put those crazy 200-400% rise in year-on-year sales into context. If every month of 2022 PS5 had sold twice as much as XBS, they would be talking about sales of 8 to 1

Microsoft fail over and over again because they simply don't get it. They think sizes matters: price, power, convenience, but what really matters is how the games make you feel. XBOX is the dude who thinks having six-pack abs and a Ferrari will make him a hit with the ladies; in reality, they're going home with the less toned guy, with a beat-up Ford who can make her laugh, feel special and doesn't constantly brag about himself.

You mean how many times Xbox sold more than a console that's not on sale? Talk about having your sales expectations in the dirt.

If PS5 ends up selling 25M this year alone it'll equal Series sales ww overall...you do know that right? It's tragic.
I am not doubting that PS5 is killing it and the only reason why XBS sold more in some months of 2021-2022 was because PS5 did not have stock, I simply think that knowing how the podium was during each month of 2022 would help interpret better data to explain the rises and falls in sales of the 3 consoles

How does Xbox ever even begin to fix this?
I'm so glad it's not my job to rectify this issue.
When Nintendo was in the same position, with the Gamecube sold for peanuts and loosing against Sony and even Xbox, they put Iwata in charge. One of his first actions was asking for a study of the gaming market. From that he gave us the DS and the rest is history. If Xbox does the same, they can work out something for next gen. Or continue using Microsoft money, and that will at least please their fans who can get a cheap console and cheap games with Gamepass. Better than nothing, even if we can now see that it does not work outside of the USA.

Xbox dropping like a rock.

Super fast.

The worst drop YoY for Xbox yet. Truly attrocious.

How on earth do MS expect to keep selling this hardware until the new generation in 2028? They couldn't keep it selling for 3 years.

There's zero chance the Xbox Series consoles sell anything post-2025. They have 2 more years to PROVE the Xbox brand is worth saving. If Phil doesn't turn it around in 2 years, he will be fired and Xbox will "START" the 3rd party process.

Forza makes sense if you look at Steam numbers, for some reason people only care about Horizon.
There are some decent sim racers on PC/Steam, but fun arcade racers like Forza Horizon (at least good ones) are pretty rare. Plus Horizon just works better for general audience so will always sell more.

Oh and new Forza had bunch of technical issues and content limitations at launch.

From InstallBase

Europe October 2022:

"367,821 games consoles were sold across European markets last month, a drop of 33% over the same period the year before. This data does not include Germany or UK figures, for UK data click here.

In a rare twist, PS5 was the best-selling console of the month, just ahead of Nintendo Switch. Switch suffered a steep drop over October 2021, due to the fact that the Switch OLED model launched during this period last year.

It's the first time since September 2021 that Nintendo Switch was not the No.1 console across Europe.

The Xbox Series family of consoles is the only platform to post a year-on-year increase in October, with sales up over 26%."

PS5: 135k
Switch: 130k
XB:100K

October 2023

"Over in console hardware, PS5 is comfortably the No.1 console in Europe (across tracked markets, UK and Germany not included). PS5 sales are up 143% over October last year, driven by the availability of stock this time around. Nintendo Switch is at No.2 despite a 20% drop in sales compared with last October, while Xbox Series S and X sales continue to struggle in Europe, down 52% year-on-year.

In total, 481,000 consoles were sold across the tracked markets in October."

PS5: 320K
Switch: 110k
XB: 50K

YOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! This is just sad man. One month after Starfield releases and the SAME month Forza 8 releases. HOW? Just HOW?

Considering Sarah Bond went out there and told the world Starfield was the most important rpg ever tells you all you need to know. They are trying to convince you of something through words and not through actions.

Will be interesting to see Xbox sales for November in the UK. Microsoft have some good discounts going on. The Series X was available today for £329 and Series S £190 with Game Pass.

I have still not made the upgrade this Gen, still rocking a PS4 Pro and Xbox One X. Tempting to get a Series X during the sale this month and wait till next year to pick up PS5 Pro.

By possibly launching a new generation much sooner than 2028. I've just got to wonder if this would still work on their customers though. The longevity of their consoles have been kind of bad. I still remember people trying to say X1X wasn't going to be a short lived console because it would become the new S for the current gen but it was sidelined for the next gen.

Right.

So...which Series console gets discontinued first?

We kinda know its gonna be the XSX, like the One X was.

Unless they plan to hemorrhage money to slash the console prices how do they turn this around in two years now? They took their best shots already, and the only real difference maker in Activision can’t be exclusive for a decade. It’s time to embrace being 4th party (1st and 3rd combined) while making sure their games are first or better on Xbox to salvage the brand while making money off these massive investments (without damaging the acquired IPs by limiting sales to chase a boat that keeps drifting further from shore).

Right.

Of course, you drop the console that sells worse than the other and it's more expensive to make....

Why should they keep making it, if the units already made keep collecting dust on shelves?

I think the whole acquisition drama has put people off from the Xbox brand. It put me. I immediately sold my S when the whole shitshow started.

Xbox has just weird vibes all over since then, like mostly everything from Microsoft. There’s so little inovation. They failed with their phones, their laptops are ridiculous compared to Apple hardware, they just live from government and corporate negotiations to sell OS OEMs. They can buy any publisher on earth and gamepass/xbox will still look tainted and kind of corny. Azure, Office and AI is where it’s at. They’re a trillion dollar company for a reason anyway.

PlayStation isn’t looking much better these days with making their console a potential Marvel/Horizon delivery service.

We had black friday last week and the ps5 standard was selling for 430 euros. Usually it costs 550. But all bundles had similar discounts including spidey.
I've finally got one for xmas. November numbers will be huge if this was in all Europe.
I'm in portugal by the way...
Same in Greece as well. Since today, one big retailer, if you use a credit/debit card form a specific bank (Eurobank), gives you 15% money back to your credit/debit card. Effective price for a PS5 with a disc drive as well: 365 euros. It will be gone by tomorrow.

Playstation has much more variety on offer than just Marvel and Horizon.

So Europe and Asia Xbox massively trailing PS.

NA slightly trailing PS but the gap is widening and lots of big games still coming to PS exclusively either 1st or 3rd party which suggest the gap will widen more.

I was expecting a closer generation between the two but it seems by the end of the gen it will be the opposite of this.

In 2023 in North America, the PS5 has sold 65% compared to Xbox Series Consoles selling 35% of all HD Power consoles. It's starting to get worse, even in Xbox's best territory.

This is not even funny at this point...how is it possible that a console that's on sale for 300€ in an entire continent, with 2 big AAA releases recently can't even sell 50k units? (here in Portugal there's deals at 200€ for Series S right now lmao)
Bad exclusives, bro, its all about good games/aka exclusives, even outdated and weak af switch is smashing xbox series left and right just on the very simple basis- it provides its owners quality games/entertainment.
Here in europe when u compare what xbox series has to offer vs ps5 its such a no brainer choice, almost every1 go sony at this point, i follow gaming podcast with most dedicated xbox fans i know, and even all of them this year went either pc or sony, barely playing their xboxes(some even hated starfield lol, not to mention redfall), its really dark and big struggle on those xbox streets :p

Wow that's awful. I didn't know the gap was so big for this year. If they lose more ground in NA then they might as well pack it in.
