Ok so it’s $40 now on PSN.

The upgrade is 10 to that smooth $50

The hard copies will def be $70

This is just more of a push towards digital. But you save money. Double edged sword videogame bullshit 🥳
You can get a PS4 hard copy for $20 making it even less. But also to that they've had this on sale for a while now, even down to $10 on PSN and at various retailers. People have had ample opportunity to get it for dirt cheap but they decided not to.

The only redundant version here is the original PC release. These are all ports to different platforms and I fail to see the word "REMASTER" on any of those boxes. So not sure how that relates.
Rent free in your head much?

It's the same game being "remade" for different generations of consoles and PC. How is it NOT the same as this?
Are we at a point where difference between a port, a remaster and a remake has to be explained on goddamn gaming forum?
I guess we are, because person I replied to struggles with the concept that RE4R is a completely different game to RE4, and as such fully deserves a GOTY nomination for being a brilliant 2023 title.

A PORT is an adaptation of the game to the new platform that keeps changes to the minimum, some QoL, maybe a select number of graphical changes if the new hardware allows for it.
A REMASTER is a complete graphical overhaul, often with a move to a new engine, but little to no core gameplay changes.
A REMAKE is a completely new game, built from ground up, that aims to capture the essense of the original instead of copying it.

Point being, this "remaster" has a shorter change list than a free Cyberpunk 2.0 patch. It's just a PS5 port with the kind of DLC we would've expected to be free back in 2020, sold for $10. Hell, we expected Factions 2 to be free DLC.

It doesn't matter if the word "remastered" is on the box. Several of the re-releases were marketed as HD versions.

Resident Evil 4 HD
Resident Evil 4 HD Ultimate Edition (PC)

They even released Resident Evil 4 on Wii and called it the Wii Edition because it took advantage of the motion controls.

Capcom re-released several Resident Evil games as HD versions. They also added additional content, one being Wesker Mode for Resident Evil Zero.

I wish they WON'T do this for their next big AAA game though. Give us at least one year before the game drops. No reason ND's game should only get 3 months' worth of coverage prior to release. Unless it's a Remaster, then that's okay.

I agree I don't like it, I prefer a good marketing cycle. But my expectations are set to they will reveal games when they have a release date set

What do you all think the LOST LEVELS will be? Three unfinished environments where we can play through and get a sense of how it might’ve been had they been in the the final game?

Do ya think there will be cut scenes ?

Will we be able to play em “right out of the box”, or do ya think we’ll have to “unlock” it (possibly by completing the game)?

I guess with the commentary - they will tell us where in the game they would have been inserted chronologically

Who expected it to be free? Every company doesn't give out content for free. If Nintendo can port RE4, 90 times, then Sony can make one remaster of a game.

...because they were HD versions of the game and not remasters. Why are you struggling with the notion that the word "REMASTER" has different connotations than "now this game is on this platform :D"

ND are free to port TLOU 120 times, just don't call these ports a remaster when they clearly aren't.

No. HD releases are considered remasters.

Resident Evil HD

The game that defined the survival-horror genre is back! Check out the remastered HD version of Resident Evil.

Resident Evil 0

Before the mansion, before the destruction of Raccoon City, there was Resident Evil 0. Now remastered with improved visuals and sounds, as well as the all-new Wesker Mode, there's never been a better time to experience the origins of the Resident Evil story.

Resident Evil 6

Blending action and survival horror, Resident Evil 6 delivers an epic dramatic horror experience. Resident Evil favorites Leon S. Kennedy, Chris Redfield and Ada Wong are joined by new characters, including Jake Muller, to face a new horror, the highly virulent C-virus, as the narrative moves between North America, the war-torn Eastern European state of Edonia and the Chinese city of Lanshiang. Resident Evil 6 HD Remastered is European version

Do I need to continue or do you need more examples?

And those RE4 'HD' releases were as lazy as hell. The difference though is that there wasn't an existing 'last gen' version which already ran on the newer system. You couldn't play the PS2 version of RE4 on a PS3, or the PS3 version on a PS4. You can however play the PS4 version of TLOU2 on a PS5 because it's backwards compatible. They're literally just reselling the same game.

Loving that the $10 upgrade path was confirmed. Time to stalk every sale between now and launch for cheaper copy of PS4 version. I skipped it at the end of last generation cause a PS5 version was obviously coming eventually. And was in no rush thanks to the leaks.

Is it confirmed you can upgrade from the digital version or are people just assuming you can? (A reasonable assumption to be sure, if it wasn't for the tweet implying it was only for physical.)

Given that the 'remaster' appears to look literally identical to the original game, it is disappointing that PS4 owners can't get this (ie. to play on PS4), and at least benefit from the new game mode which might provide $10 of value.

Just one question...

if say back in 2020, Sony had made both a PS4 and PS5 version of this game. Seeing how Sony has priced PS4+PS5 versions of their games, what do you think the prices would have been?

hint, you can look at the recent release of GOW:R on both the PS4 and PS5.

honesty I think these days people just complain for the sake of complaining. It doesn't matter if this is a port, remaster, or remake, if the only thing that makes it a PS5 version, is a higher rez, some QOL stuff, and higher fps and that's it? Sony still has the right to charge whatever they want to charge for their IP. And that they are charging $10, is not only fair, but consistent with the price differences between the PS4 and PS5 versions of their games all gen.

If you don't like it, you reserve the right to not spend your money and wait for when the price of the product is something you are comfortable with.. This whole gamer entitlement wanting everything for free nonsense just irks me.

I wouldn't consider it lazy because their objective is to just release it on another console. They're not going to spend a lot of time improving the graphics considering the budget is low and the sales aren't expected to be that high.

The point is that they're still called remasters and Capcom was looking to maximize the profit of their games. This is why they often re-release titles multiple times, even bundling them into packs.

Because so far you just listed a bunch of legit remasters like RE1. To demonstrate how Capcom frivolously calls their ports remasters, I guess?
Are you for real?

The only lifeline you've got have there is a cover blurb TRANSLATED FROM JAPANESE TO ENGLISH.
Which, when translated to other languages like Spanish, says "Updated version".
Take a step back and internalize just how deep you had to scrape to find one straw to cling on.

Can't wait to jump back in. Loved this game, probably more so than the first, so 10 bucks for some PS5-goodness is a bargain. Not jumping on the physical edition though. PS4 edition is more than enough.

No. Typically, publishers released HD versions of their games and they called it a remaster. MOST remaster releases only have increased resolution.

No, it's not translated as "Updated version." They use the same wording on all their remaster versions.

Resident Evil 1 was called a remaster when they started releasing the HD version, not when it was released on the Gamecube

Dude is definitely confusing "remaster" with "remake." Even in movies, remastering an old movie is always moving it up to HD quality and not remaking the entire thing. If anything The Last of Us Part 2 ps5 remaster could also be considered a director's cut, because of the added deleted levels. Part 2 is just really polarizing and some people will always find a reason to hate it.

This is one game which almost makes me wish I had a PS5. (Although I hate the story, the graphics and gameplay are very good. Playing with voices turned off makes it a lot more tolerable.) I wonder how long before it comes to PC 🤔

One of the worst things on PS4 is the loading times are terrible, which I assume the PS5 version will dramatically improve.

There are no loading times in the last of us part 2 on ps4.

edit: well i guess that's not literally true. but it it's pretty good about it, except when you're loading a save or something.

The resonance for this remaster is overwhelmingly negative in German tech and mainstream media and comment sections.

I thought that I maybe overly critical towards Sony and Naughty Dog, but it seems that it's actually a common stance here.

I think the fact that there's no way to stream HBO in Germany without proxy plays a role.

I don't think Sony is doing their PlayStation brand a favor by remastering the same game back to back to its original release.

And you can see everywhere that Naughty Dog as a brand took damage for going all in on the idiotic left vs right freakshow that the USA have been exporting into the world for the last decade.

It doesn't matter if it's 10 dollar or 100 dollar. It's a matter of principle.

Sony's message is: I'm going to sell you the same game multiple times and you can never be sure if you own the definitive version.

This will of course create buyers remorse among those who spend 70 dollars on the PS4 version. And if they do a PS6 version, it will create buyers remorse among those who got the PS5 version.

Another important factor is that Europe is a strong PC gaming foothold. You can't sell graphics updates to people who play on PC. They're used to just install a new graphics card and turn up settings.

And most the people I see complaining had no interest in the series to begin with. Last of Us Part I received far more backlash and likely sold a good amount based on the budget of the title.

Why doest suckerpunch get this level of anger they havent released a game since 2020 either just put out dlc and a graphics update. Or all the versions of resident evil. Why dose this particular instance of dlc different from all the others.

That's where you're completely wrong.

The average gamer has a very high digital media literacy. YouTube reviews, metacritic, Amazon reviews, Twitch, Neogaf, Reddit etc exist for the mainstream. Not everyone is writing, but there are millions reading and watching.

There's an amazing book called "Diffusion of Innovations" which is to this day the blue print for product cycles. Someone at Microsoft got famous for saying "The first one to sell 20 million concoles wins the generation". This statement is based on the key concepts of this book.

If you don't make sales with the hardcore fans, you will never make sales with the mainstream.

Social media algorithms are designed to push awesome or outrageous news to the top. If the hardcore fans are unhappy with Sony approach to remastering games, the mainstream will learn about it and they will not spend their money on it even though they don't know exactly what's going on.

Resident evil separate ways didn't piss off people and it was similarly priced.
That's 5h of new content for a game that debuted 18 years ago.

Naughty Dog's output in the past 4 years is TLOU2 -> TLOU1 Remake -> TLOU2 Remake.

If you can't see the difference then that's your personal problem.

a Rougelike mode and cut levels for ten dollars is a fair price point for dlc. Also once again suckerpunch only put out dlc for ghosts in the last 3 years as well were people pissed at that too?

This is wrong.

The average gamer isn't roaming in the comment section and that's why you see only thousands or hundreds of comments\likes and not millions. This game is even targeted by people who have no interest in the game and they will hate it regardless.

Someone like The Critical Drinker who has been critical of this game would comment on it via Twitter. His followers (most whom have no interest in the game) will downvote the video and leave a negative comment. You also have gamers on competing platforms who will also downvote the video or leave a negative comment because Sony has always been criticized for releasing remasters.

YouTube reviewers are far more level-headed than a lot of people you see leaving angry messages on Twitter. They will leave an honest review about the game. Amazon reviews? Yet people will leave a more positive comment if they actually bought the game. Twitch is going to be people who actually bought the game and are playing it, which is different than people who have no interest in the game and just leaving negative comments.

After episode 3 of the HBO show, there were thousands of angry people across social media leaving negative comments and refusing to watch another episode. And guess what happened? The viewership increased.

There are always people online who want Sony to remaster other games more than The Last of Us 2 with far more positive comments. The reason why they don't do it is because they have far less interest.

I have not yet played Ghost of Tsushima which is a shame because I loved every single second of Infamous Second Son.

From what I've seen online, Ghost of Tsushima got a lot of praise globally for staying true to Japanese culture and not falling into the culture war trap.

Naughty Dog on the other hand, infused TLOU2 with identity politics. This probably seemed like great idea in their Californian bubble, but it definitely caused irritation in other parts of the world.

Some people simply don't want to buy a 70+ dollar video game only to be confronted with the US left vs right clownshow.

So my answer to your question is that I think Naughty Dog is paying the price for having stepped down from the meta level in order to fight with pigs over fotm politics.

Even though we disagree on many things in many threads, I think you're a very valuable member of this forum because you always take the time to answer in depth without targeting other persons personally.

But in this case your language exposes a big problem in your thought process.

People don't hate Naughty Dog or TLOU2. There's more nuances than love or hate. This world isn't just black or white and dualism is a universally wrong concept.

There's no need to declare war on things you dislike. I never hesitate to criticize Neil Druckman for TLOU2, but I also think of him as one of the best and most skilled devs in the industry.

Only a complete idiot would not listen to their critics. Hubris will bring about everyone's downfall.
