Guys your quibbling is great, but it distracts us from the real question imo.
From your perspective ( :messenger_winking: ) what the hell did Tom Howard meant by "i'd had" ?
Does it mean something, or the dude just don't care anymore to even speak proper english ?

Edit : seriously is "I'd had" ever correct in english ?
"I would had" doesn't work, 'I had had" neither so what is this godforsaken conjugation ?

Okay so your whole argument was why can they not make a 3rd person Indy game without it being an uncharted game… right?. Conclusion was that they must lack talent?. Am I off or not?. I honestly don’t have time to peruse 20 plus replies, but I believe that’s the gist.. if I’m off I apologise..

Now my genuine question is in your opinion what will Indy lack by being first person instead of third.
i can see you're trying... which is a good start. but you do need to read further.

the entire 3rd vs 1st came up because someone was saying that the people who would have preferred 3rd don't know what they are talking about because 3rd means it can only be uncharted, nothing else.

So you see now how the response of "3rd person doesn't have to be exactly the same as uncharted" is something people are talking about?

and i've never said anything about 3rd being better or first being bad. I have however Criticized what MachineGames version of a first person indy has turned out to be, some call of duty style arcade shooter.

I don't know what the perfect indy 3rd or 1st person game could be, but either way we aren't getting it. I will play and enjoy this Wolfenstein indy game but it's not a faithful Indy game i personally want.

I want Indy to barely kill anyone, i want him to not be a super soldier acrobat, i want Indy to be what the original trilogy were.

The exhilaration of such a moment would be impossible to recreate using 1st person perspective. A 3rd person view is the closest you can get to the feeling you're playing an interactive movie. That's what you would want from a game based on the three classic Indy movies - but you're going to get a completely different experience in a first person perspective.

I don't want to watch a movie. I want to play a game. We don't need slow walking and talking bullshit. If a game director wants to make a movie, then grab an iPhone and go make one. Don't waste our time trying to be Kubrick with your games.

That's literally what this seems to be. They said it's puzzle heavy and a lot of it is options = exploration. What more do you want? Another 3rd person mass-murderer simulator posing as an adventure game?
yep thats what im asking for. All I ever wanted from a Indiana Jones game. the formula works. no need to reinvent the wheel for this one. I cant believe you are on this forum complaining about a mass murder simulator lol. I cant take you seriously.

I would be even more pissed if Doom/Halo went third person than I am about Indy being first person.
Nothing "went" 1st or 3rd. This is a brand new game from a studio that has literally only done first person games for literally decades.

I have just as much right to hold Marathon to this absurd standard you guys are holding this game to. The fact that you can't even handle reading my posts without discomfort shows me how much cognitive dissonance everyone here has. All I have to do to make some of these arguments sound absurd is just repeat them back to you guys with a different game inserted from a different publisher and it instantly sounds like a clown show.

My posts aren't aimed at just you. It's aimed at many of the absurd arguments I've just been silently reading for the last day. Multiple people are arguing exactly like I just did and they sound absurd.

After quick search on UT It kinda saddens me that not a single Indy trailer upload has gathered 1m views in 16 full hours. The franhise is clearly not the power it was used to be back in it's heyday.

Personally, I liked what I saw.
Art direction is spot-on, the orchestral soundtrack is there and the graphics, while not Naughty Dog/Sony Santa Monica/Remedy/Crytek levels are still A-OK to me, I mean, it does look like they're using the Wolfie engine so...it is what it is.

Regarding the 1st person thing : I hate FPV games and I'd take 3rd person any day of the week but, at least it won't be another Uncharted/Tomb raider reboot clone - maybe they did this on purpose for this exact reason or maybe 'cause they're a FPS company first and foremost which is what they're good at , either way, it sits fine with me and it looks like something that I'd definitely play.

Gameplay wise, it looks like a stealth -type game where you should (preferably) whack enemies from behind using shovels/chokeholds etc with some whip bits when those options fail sprinkled with some shooty bang bang bits in FPV using MG's etc...

The only jarring part to me is the friggin voice over for Indy - the character shares uses Harrison's likeness but not his voice ? It's weird to say the least.

Anyway, looked interesting and I'll most probably play it on my laptop if it can handle it.

Cheers

There's a few saying it shouldn't be 3rd person because of the uncharted comparisons but isn't uncharted literally the perfect template for an Indiana Jones game? It would have been great for xbox to have its own uncharted style game. Such a washed opportunity. Should have known Microsoft would fuck it up. Out of all the studios, they fucking give it to machine games? For the love of god Microsoft, can you do anything right?
Bethesda already acquired the license for Machine Games before Microsoft acquired them.

Agree. And then go play Doom or Wolfenstein. That should make it pretty obvious what the best format for an Indy game would be. Key word: should.
And then go play Vanquish so you can see how much Bungie is letting everyone down. Or hell, play Uncharted since it's also a multiplayer shooter. Key word: clowns

Regarding the 1st/3rd person dicsussion my wife has an interesting take: 3rd person games have way less motion sickness for general public and thus can be played by way more people. Part of the reason why so many top-selling narrative adventure games are 3rd person.

While this is pure personal preference I think it is importnat to highlight this. Both TNC and TNO had an agressive camera bobbing and postfx, so even for a perfectly nomal FPS guy it was too much at times. Add whip and jumps and you have a pure motion disaster for some people. It could be remedied by accessibility options tho.

Personally, I think RE8-like way of doing it (optional TPS mode, tho not stellar) is a way to go, especially when the game implements a lot of 3rd person animations and interactions already.

I'm not even arguing with anyone that a third person Indy game if done right wouldn't be amazing and a lot of fun. I'd love to play that game if it existed.

Luckily, I like first person games and I really enjoyed Wolfenstein and I think this Developer knows that they are doing. What I saw looks good to me and I can't wait to play a first person Puzzle action, Indy game.

If it's good, It's good. I'm just glad a new exciting game is releasing this year. It's a shame it's not ticking the boxes for you guys, but it doesn't make it "SHIT" just because it's not what you want.

Who cares? Would I think first person Mario is a great idea suddenly because it was given to a studio that only makes first person games? I simply happen to think it's a bad idea for Indiana Jones. That's my opinion. Deal with it.

You say nothing "went" first person, yet use a FPS game going third-person as some sort of equal example?

Some of the points for hating on the first person perspective are pretty shitty and I find just as dumb for liking third person. I still have my own reasons for thinking it was a bad choice so I agree with their final conclusion anyway. Most people making these points probably are just drive-by dunking and will never play the game. I'll probably still give it a chance on PC, at my desk, and take it for what it is, while being 100% aware of a missed opportunity. Because it IS a new game out of nowhere -it's simply (IMO) not reaching it's potential. On the other hand, if Halo "went" third person, I would never even look at it again. 100% dead franchise

Cannot help yourself with a jab ......

Anyway, I got my answer it's your preference... Cod is known to be bombastic and have massive set pieces, yet it manages to do this while being first person. I only argue the point because I honestly love games and only judge each to their own merit. I do not believe there is one way to convey a vision and cinematic feel. If all you got out of that reveal was Wolfenstein but indy I question your personal preference towards such perspectives. For instance we saw indy bring out a gun once and shot three rounds.

There are plenty of Indiana Jones games, none is 1st person view.
In comparison with previous games, it went 1st person.

Well, just watched the 4k feed for the reveal and it certainly looks really nice, the streaming quality was not on par. Really excited about it, I can see this being released on November, I guess MS will reveal the release date during their summer event.

This is a horrible example and frankly makes you look bad. The only Marathon that exists is an ancient first person game. It's Halo's predecessor. Marathon, as concept, as a IP, only exists as a FPS video game. The same is not true of Indiana Jones.

Absolutely bizarre that this thread is blowing up because of the first person view. And a lot of it has to do with console wars indeed.

Machine Games are amazing and they are doing what they know how to do best. The trailer for the game looks awesome and yes, it’s refreshing to see a first person Indiana Jones. It’s giving me Dishonoured vibes with the stealth segments and puzzle sequences. Why would you not want that? The game has so much potential to be good that it’s breaking some people. The whole vibe and atmosphere is closer to the original film trilogy than the latest films. It’s what we want.

Were people crying like this when RE7 was announced? Insanity.

As I said, @kruis provides the best explanation.
uncharted is great do not get me wrong but from my personal view that gif does not really scream indy must be 3rd person.. I say this because I am bored of 3rd person games, they seem to all feel samey and stick to a certain formula. I honestly do not understand the push back to a game doing a hybrid style which shakes up the standard third person action-adventure style of modern gaming.

Watch the trailer. It's 100% shown off as 3rd person with detailed character models and the game will probably sell tons of cosmetics to show off how you look. And doesn't Destiny even cut to 3rd person a decent amount? I don't honestly know but I thought I saw that on super moves. Are you sure there's no 3rd person at all in Marathon? And furthermore, why wouldn't 3rd person be better? Why would it ever make me "look bad" to just say I think Bungie is letting everyone down by not being 3rd person since it's a superior perspective? I figured we'd all be in complete agreement. Weird!

Wolfenstein but indy has nothing to do with the perspective..

I have played and finished ,multiple times, each of machine games wolf titles (except the terrible youngbloods) as well as their respective DLCs

My wolfenstein but Indy comes from knowing exactly what those games feel like and play like and asides from a gimmick being a whip instead of extendible robot legs, they look almost identical to me. What they have showed (which is all we can base this upon) looks exactly like their prior works... which for me never gave the impression of "this need to be Indiana Jones game."

Again I don't think "hurr hurr punch a nazi" when I think Indy. all I get from what I saw is that you are going to be doing insane things while killing everything that moves like you do in the wolf games and most first person shooters.

I don't think huge massive setpieces with Indy. I think small intimate setpieces where Indy has to use his brain to survive and outwit.

We've gone from flapping an umbrella to bird strike a plane to jumping from two moving planes in the air with call of duty action all around.

I'd be worried that you struggle with basic concepts but it's obvious you're just being intentionally disingenuous. I already clearly addressed everything here and you simply ignored it all and asked it back again.

I love and i mean love Resi 7 and Resi 8....I completed resi 8 about 12 times.

No one can tell me that would be better in third person.

That's because there is nothing dictating that the game "must be" anything. But I don't get the push back on the suggestion that third person would be better either. Look.....I hope the game is great in first person, but I can't help but think they missed an opportunity here to make a truly great cinematic game with this choice.
