Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered Includes Racial and Ethnic Stereotypes Warning From Crystal Dynamics

WARNING: This NeoGAF post contains words which are made up of letters from the English alphabet. English is a language that many people speak, including harmful, dangerous, racist, xenophobic, misogynistic, transphobic, and otherwise "literally ain't even it, chief" people. In addition, this language contains LOTS of scary and dangerous words that are deeply troubling and offensive. It is recommended that all people who don't like hatred and villainy STOP reading this post immediately and retreat to your nearest Amazon® or Microsoft® sponsored inclusionary safe-space or non-yikes friendo forum.

Rather than edit this post, we/them have decided to retain its original content in its purest form so that future generations may observe and learn from its hateful and evil nature. We/them are deeply and truly sorry, and will strive to do better in future posts.

The content of the post is as follows:

haha that's dumb CS is stupid

You should be banned just for this text color you monster.

kruis

Exposing the sinister cartel of retailers who allow companies to pay for advertising space.
While a warning is stupid to begin with, my main gripe is them asserting outright to the player that it is "deeply harmful" and "inexcusable". That's for the player to decide.

If they regard it as deeply harmful and inexcusable they shouldn't be making money off it. It is neither of course, but I won't support their lack of consistency.

Yep. The text in the disclaimer makes it seem those "deeply harmful" "inexcusable" depictions are an indesputable fact. Nope, they're opinions.

So they're NOT editing the game, just putting up a disclaimer?

WTF, so many triggered snowflakes ITT.

Press x and move on.

literally what was problematic in the original games? someone must have went out of their way looking for problems because I sure as hell dont remember any. and even if they were just average stereotypical depictions of whatever ethnic persons.. big fuckin deal, stereotypes exist for a reason. go bitch about saturday night live, that show was insanely racist 20 years ago.

Blocky characters of color, no doubt. Not enough blocky trans bulges. Etc.

Okay so if someone decides to play the original games or any game that might even remotely be racist , do they need to post on social media each time to let the world know that "Hi all, I am currently playing this particular game and I very sorry about it. The game contains offensive depictions of people and cultures rooted in racial and ethnic prejudices. These stereotypes are deeply harmful, inexcusable, and do not align with my values"
If they don't let the world know before booting up the game then they're racist?

Sure- super sensitive world we live in. Def soft
But i also see alot of complaining about a warning screen. Devs protecting the very games we love from being tarnished/softened/ruined.

Healthy balance in this modern world

Who gives a shit about a 5 second black screen? Are ya'll really that fragile?

Bunch of crybabies up in here.
That's like being cool with the constant reminders Nintendo had for their 3DS games(Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D/Metroid: Samus Returns) about taking a break after playing for like 2 hours. Yeah you can just glance away from it but it is silly it's even there in the first place.

This also highlights a problem this forum loves to do, this thread is currently the most active Tomb Raider Remastered thread on NeoGAF, not the review thread which is full of positive reviews, not the tech thread where DF have praised how well this package is for players, etc, no, this thread about a disclaimer that appears when you start the game and can easily skip. Nothing has been removed or changed in the game, they're presented as is, yet people here want to complain about it.

always chasing the next thrill
same shit disney does.. you can cry about it or.. see it for what is really is.. corp not giving a fuck and spending zero point 1 seconds in fixing it by saying sorry in a jpeg

Yea because if you make a big delicious sandwich and I really want to eat it, but then you fart on it... it kind of ruins my appetite. How bout quit being a pushover when stupid things are put in otherwise solid products. Not to mention this whole trend of being overly sensitive about past norms, does the opposite of what they want.

This whiny self-excusing shit is so pathetic. Same with Ubisoft debility. I don't care about your sex orientations and gender beliefs, morons!

That said, the remaster looks great otherwise so thank fuck for that.

Sadly certain people these days will complain about anything and no doubt there is stuff in these games that they'd scream about, just like with the MGS Collection, it's called protecting your ass by NOT altering or cutting any original content and just waving it off as "it's a product of its time, if you're offended that's on you". I thought most of us agreed years ago this was the best way to handle things? Don't cut anything, just put a note somewhere about possible offensive content by todays standards then put it out as is. That's what people wanted with films and old cartoons back when they used to edit them instead.

This is the most hilarious and insincere content warning I've ever seen. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

This game's content is just awful, it will scar you for life... Anyway, enjoy the game.

Sure, we all know the warning is there to give you the option to not play it if you are overly sensitive with regards to the related content. But still.

A skippable warning screen is the best compromise that can please the sensitive parties on both ends.

Also, these devs aren't on GAF. If you guys want to 'push back' you know where to go.
People are critical of a lot of things on GAF despite the creators not being a part of our community. Welcome to the internet, March Climber.

This thread is just proving that sometimes we really are just coinflip Era. How many of you are planning to boycott this game? :messenger_neutral:

That message is pretty much a copy and paste of a message that appeared before Aladdin started playing via Dianey Plus.

Yep and that turned into labelling everything potentially or remotely offensive, and even things not offensive at all. Are you canadian or something, always apologizing for things nobody was hurt by? Like someone said earlier, just ignore those screamers, capitulating encourages their crusade of retardedness... and also ruins the moment of booting up the game expecting some fun action, only to have some harpie warning about EVIL RACISM. Its so tiresome.

Devs: Here's a brilliantly detailed remaster that gives players multiple options to enjoy these games without any cut content at all, we should cover our asses though and put a disclaimer in case certain people throw a fit.
