Is PC the best gaming platform this generation?

LimanimaPT

Member
Not for me. I have too many cons. Multiple store fronts, small monitor, the fact that you have to play using keyboard and mouse you need to be seated at a desk, game crashes because there aren't two PCs alike, PC is not suited for multiple users, high hardware prices, system resources wasted by the SO and so on, and so on...
So, no, for me, PC is not the best platform in this or any other generation and never will be. I like simplicity and a console can't be matched in that regard.

My history the past few months:

- Had a Series X, but Forza and Starfield were such big letdowns I jumped to PS5
- Bought VR thinking it would be someting cool, but no. Almost nog full games for it. Played GT7 a lot but had a feeling something was missing.
- Fast forward to a few weeks ago. Sold PS5. Bought a decent rig and upgraded the GPU.

I'm so glad I'm back to PC. Its the ultimate gaming platform for me.

Why?

- I choose exactly what I want. Do I want 120+ FPS on 4K? DLSS is my friend
- Modding/ reshading etc
- ALL Unreal Engine 4 and 5 games can be converted to 6DOF VR. Yes, I'm playing Trepang2 and Robocop in fucking VR!!
- No monthly subscription for online play
- Multiple storefronts to choose from (GOG, Steam, Epic, EA, etc, etc)

Anyone who tells me these aren't significat pros when compared to consoles is an idiot.

So YES pc is the best platform if you invest the time.
Tinkered for an hour with UEVR and 2 games in my library are comfortably playable in VR.

PC gaming is like a treasure chest of possibilities.

You dont get that on consoles.

All bullshit sorry.

- Multiple storefronts is a +. Seek the best deal and buy it there. No-one is forcing you.
- Small monitor: Your problem. Hook it up to a tv just like any console. Non Argument
- Seated at a desk....... Non Argument again.
- Keyboard and mouse is NOT mandatory for almost all games. You can use a controller. Another Non Argument
- PC IS suited for multiple users in the exact same way as consoles. Non Argument nr. 4
- Nothing is wasted if you know your shit and have the hardware. Non Argument 5

So pc gaming is not for you based on bullshit? Aight man, the exit is that way. ---------------->

People use pc's as console all the time. Mine is hooked up to a 42" LG 4K tv with a wireless controller.
I play from the coutch. Can grab VR when I want because its wireless.
I dont pay for online play or any other form of monthly subscription
I can use whatever headset or perhiperal I want. Im not limited to what Sony or MS accept as hardware on their consoles

I can go on and on to bedunk your pathetic reasoning, but I think I made my point.

Windows 11 support alright?

Can’t say from experience but peoples on Reddit I see are using it and I would be surprised that all reviews I watched would not mention it doesn’t work on win11.

Seen also in the specs that it is a supported OS.

Honestly was easy to install, right off the windows store.

If you have a mega size monitor, it could be a problem. There’s software to adjust but I’m just giving a warning. But most peoples have it working (including me) on bigger than the recommended size. I’m on ultrawide 34’’ for reference.

PC is even bringing Stereoscopic 3D gaming back. Looking forward to playing through Octopath Traveler 2 in 3D.

Dayum.. not sure I would sacrifice ultrawide….but have they announced a price?

It's a triple screen setup with a gopro to record it from his pov.

No, tobii eye tracker is for something else, it’s eye / head tracking.

I was saying I’m thinking of building a race rig.

There’s not much point into having an head tracker if you have a triple monitor setup, it’s already wrapping all around you.

100% it is and tbh I can't logically see how anyone could say it isnt. I was exclusively console for 20 years, but buying a gaming PC changed my attitude towards gaming entirely. Better performance, no monthly fees, ability to gradually upgrade hardware, cheaper games, better sale prices, due to keyboard controls the potential for games that have deeper mechanics and more complexity.

If I gamed on a small desk with a 20'' screen I would not be saying the same, but couch gaming on a PC is so easy nowadays. I exclusively game on a 65'' OLED, from the couch, and my Elite 2 carries all the profiles over from my Xbox with full functionality. The only time I will ever buy a game on console now is if it is exclusive.

There is one gripe I have with PC gaming though, and that is Early Access on Steam. It's ludicrous how many games are in that category, it's tiring to see a new release that looks like my kind of thing only to see it's an EA title and will probably be years until the full release, if ever. If its done right it's great, but it rarely is as far as I can tell.

Basically all this.

And I concur on the Early Access bit. Allthough you can filter them out. ;)

Bodycam
Gunman Contracts

Both in Early Access, but not accessible. Will have to wait until they release....

PC is my main platform. Higher frame rates, customizable graphics, option to use kb+m or controller as I wish, tweaking or modding games, etc.
But there are also a ton of problems. Hardware has become extremely expensive. Windows 11 is a piece of crap full of spyware and bloatware. There are too many stores and launchers. May games with issues with stutters, especially using UE4.

Nah, the amount of games I care about ( plan to play multiple times ) this generation is same as for previous ones. 5-7 tops. + occasional bargain bin stuff. Does not justify building even midrange PC. GeForce Now assured me it is not worth it, too - did not have a jaw-drop for Cyberpunk

The way to go is PC for all PC games / Game Pass and switch emulations and PS5 for PS extra and good exclusives.
Having these 2 you have everything

yes

super low latency with nvidia reflex

much higher per pixel quality with DLSS, theoritically getting more performance per pixel. for example 480p input with dlss will produce similar clarity and much stable image than 960p input with FSR/TAAU:

and this is relevant even for a lowend rtx 2070 GPU. Practically playing at 1440p dlss balanced/quality on any low/midrange RTX GPU will get you better image quality than most console games' performance mode that uses regular upscaling even if the upscaling is not aggresive, it simply can't hold a candle to DLSS.

full control of VRR/VSYNC, not weird limitations like PS5 where you're forced to use 60 Hz containers with 30/60 FPS games and <48 FPS is not supported for most games. it is completely arbitrary, on PC, even with a super cheap freesync screen, you can have full LFC and cover everything from 0 to 144 FPS
full control of arbitrary framerate caps (no need to beg to developer for 40/45 FPS mode, you can do it much better on PC, with much less input lag)
full control of gamepad, much better flexibility through Steam Input or DS4windows that allows you to use endless macros that you can use to take screenshots, captures like a console and than even better, you can use touchpad to assign keyboard functions for games per profile (admittedly some 1st party games do make use of shortcuts for touchpad. but they're not the norm. you can make your own 'shortcuts' for any game on PC)
endless backwards compatibility
full emulation flexibility
more tools to play with: being able to play path traced old titles like quake/half life is such a joy and more will come. even being able to demo-experience path tracing, even though at 30 fps, is still a huge win over console because it is simply not something you can do there even at 30 FPS. (im talking about oldgen RTX GPUs being able to barely pull 30-40 FPS with path tracing in alan wake 2 and cyberpunk. For me, it is still a win. It could've been not there, or performed even worse. The fact you can get 30+ fps with decent per pixel resolution quality with path tracing is still a win and if it were to happen on consoles everyone would lose their minds.) practically even lowend RTX hardware allows you to peek into nextgen which is something I'm quite happy with

I can go on and on, I would never able to go back to consoles. I also play games from 2004 to 2010s. Being able to remaster them with DXVK layer, pushing them with high resolution + occasional modding and bringing them up to date is simply not something I will able to do on console.

PC giving having all these advantages will cause me to stay on PC indefinitely. I have a PS5 right now but it is just collecting dust.

The whole "driver bad, crash" thing is an overhyped thing. Only relevant and valid concern is unreal engine shader compilation stutters but precompilation helps it a lot. And I believe UE5 games are bit better in this regard as I didn't have much of a problem with Jusant or Robocop

When I saw PlayStation versions of some Japanese games being censored compared to Switch and Steam that was a signal to me to focus more on those platforms. I like that Steam/Valve does not endorse or favor any particular approach to entertainment and doesn’t disallow even 18+ content, which shows they understand in an honest way what PC is used for by actual humans for their entertainment haha. with PlayStation it’s clear their first party and the officers and developers of their first party games have a single approach to entertainment that pressures creators to conform to their counterintuitive approach aesthetics. It why Stellar blade is very interesting to me to see them endorse and promote since it does go counter to their counterintuitive approach to aesthetics and could be an “olive branch” to people like me who defected.

You're clearly making excuses and using early 90's mumbojumbo to NOT use a pc.

All which are total BS. If you come with some legit reasoning, sure! But this isn't it. ;)

And I'm not offended, but all your objections to using a pc as a platform are thin and negatable. It's your choice and power to you.

But don't come with lame excuses why PC cant work as a console in general.
That's my point. :)

He is just pointing out that all your reasons for preferring a console are not factual. Just because you say "for me" doesn't give you a pass to make up bullshit reasons for it.

PC was always better to be fair.
Not really. Only when MS switched to day one with PC and then Sony followed few years after is when the PC became really the ultimate platform. Then steam deck helped that with getting your games on the go.

If MS and Sony were not on board with PC gsmes I would be playing console mostly exclusively.

I am not a fan of RTS games, cheating is much more open on the PC, and in general usually high quality gsmes are the the 1st party games. So I would be 100% on Xbox and ps5.

Now ? I sold my Xbox,I barely play my PlayStation ( only own it for final fantasy 7 rebirth and I love gt7 plus the exclusives I get to play first on ps. Just like how I enjoyed and finished ff16 and don't have to wait for PC release. )

It is the minority of games that have issues. All of the following were fine on PC when launched:

The only games truly broken on PC when released for 2023 were Jedi Survivor and The Last of Us. Hogwarts Legacy and Dead Space both have some microstutter issues as well, with the former being patched.
They may not be widely known issues but i bet if you go to ANY pc games forum you'll see "how to fix stutters". They never make a perfectly running game across all types of graphics cards and PC set ups. That's just a fact.

Nah

To me what makes a system great are the exclusives. And PC relies on Microsoft for that. And MS output has been dreadful. Not only that, but the PC ports were not great/terrible (Forza, Starfield etc.)

PC is great for older games, but I would never have it as my main hardware for the generation. Waiting months/years to play a bad port of an old game, not many high budget exclusives like it used to have ... and some games will never be released for it (TLOU Part II, Bloodborne, Driveclub etc.)

This is one terrible generation so far. Switch is the one with the most fun exclusive games, and its 7 years old, not even from this generation. Xbox is dying and Sony is sleeping.

Absolutely.
Best performance (if you've got the hardware), high customization, every first party MS game and increasingly more Sony games as well as more indies than any other platform, way cheaper games, free multiplayer, backwards compatible with decades worth of games (even more if you go into emulation), usually instant gains when upgrading your hardware without having to wait for devs to hopefully update their games, etc

The one thing that kept me away for a long time was the somewhat underwhelming support from Japanese developers, but in the last 10 years we've seen a major shift in this regard with most notable japanese games now launching on PC too and companies like Capcom even labbeling it their main platform.

I'm still on console because I'm kinda broke, but I'll switch over to PC as soon as I can afford it.

What do you mean "this generation"?
When has that NOT been the case in the past 30 years?

More choices, flexibility and options available than on any other platform, basically infinite retrocompability, top performances if you can fork the bill... Hell, even entire genres that are barely available (if at all) anywhere else.

For the price of a decent gaming pc you could buy a PS5, Series X and a Switch.
And they still wouldn't cover HALF of what a good PC can do for you, incidentally.

It is and it isn't, PC gets the most games these days and they obviously look the best with the right hardware, but then there is the crazy amount of stuttering affecting a lot of modern games and that's just annoying as hell.

Anyway, my favorite device this gen has been the Steam Deck even if I use it mostly for smaller scale games and older titles.

People still look at PC’s as important machines to pay their debt on, there’s still a crowd that assumes PC’s are for checking emails, interest rates and assume you’re IT.

"just get a pc instead!" isn't really an option for a lot of people.
But consoles are more expensive when you want to get the most out of it, some people just don't like the idea of buying dirt cheap games, I understand the ethics behind that, but if you wanna collect most new games the dirty way, you still got the choice on PC, just cause it's not practical to build cheap rigs, same thing with consoles, you can't rely on sales and services to get the most out it, the experience is massively different when pay a lot on games especially in their early days.

I don't know what this means, get the most out of it? Buying every possible game?
Even if I bought a ps5 +10 ps5 games at full price, I'd still be out much less money than just the pc; I don't even own 10 games on my switch.
And sales on console are pretty good and frequent nowadays, at least on xbox I see sales almost all the time when I boot up the console, and I make use of them, so at sale prices I could probably double the number of games and still not hit the price of a pc with no games.

Yeah, but Alex bagagagalinns isn't your typical pc player. Most of us are more than happy with it looking like a high res console game with better performance. That guy expects every pc release to have the absolute top tier pc support the platform can provide. While support is getting better, it isn't always needed but welcomed when it is.

I just think if everyone gave pc a go they would come around on it. Yes ita a large investment but with clever planning a PC can last you two generations with only the need to upgrade the gpu and that's still a maybe.

I'm playing helldivers 2 completely maxed out on ultra settings and getting 120 to 200 fps on my 4090. It looks a lot better than the ps5 version my mates on. So if devs spend the time on pc it's always better.

It’s just not for everyone. It can be a headache. I spent a whole afternoon one day trying to get Arkham City to work. The error was a common one and I read through several reddits and steam forums to try to get it working.

Using a controller wirelessly is a pia. It doesn’t work as well as it does on consoles. Mine disconnects like once a month. Before that it was disconnecting constantly. Purchased a new controller and adapter and that helped.

One day my trophies notification just stopped. Another common issue in steam big picture mode.

Hackers on pc mp is insane. On rainbow my score was being adjusted every single day for me and my cousin I couldn’t believe it. I was watching my own teammates shoot through walls.

I haven’t even listed half of the little quirks and things that popped up during my time with pc gaming. At first it’s not a big deal but it all starts to add up and I just said enough.

I don't think most console owners even notice the poor image quality.
Meanwhile PC gamers go ballistic if a game has minor issues.

It's not just bad IQ. Anyway I actually think that devs nowadays shoot not as high as they could on consoles because they know the thing you said is kinda true. They know they have to put more work into pc tho.

I love PC for older games. Fully patched and discounted. Sole exception is online as some games like older CODs are flatout unsafe and leaves your PC open to hacking and potential loss of personal information/documents.

Newer day 1 games seem to be more stable on console.

I’m slowly migrating more to PC but console still is generally the most reliable way to game.

3.23 patch for SC is gonna be enormous and a good portion of the features showcased at citizencon will be in. That means that truely, most of the devs have switched from SQ42 to work on SC to add the features they worked on SQ 42 to SC. There's no going back except polishing phase. This year? That would be a stretch, but early 2025 I wouldn't be surprised we see SQ42.

Are you blind to the numerous negatives associated with PC as a platform or do you just like to pretend they don’t exist? There have been many times when console has been the superior pick when compared to PC over the years.

Pff, not at all. Which exclusives?

  • The quality of the ports have been for the most part great
I dont agree at all

  • The wait for ports have been getting shorter and shorter.
Wake me up when you can play The Last Guardian, Bloodborne, Infamous Second Son, Killzone Shadowfall and many others on PC

No release date for TLOU Part II (game from 2020) or GOW Ragnarok yet (2022)

  • The list of console exclusives has been rapidly dwindling.
This I agree

Tho I wouldnt wait 4+ years to play TLOU Part II or more than 2 years for the new GOW game

This is the reason why I'm keeping my PS5, despite not being all that happy with it

"just get a pc instead!" isn't really an option for a lot of people.
With things like the Steam Deck and Asus Rog Ally being a thing, it looks like PC gaming is more accessible than it has been. I can see a few years from now there will be newer PC handhelds that will be able to run most current gen games with the help of upscaling and frame generation tech. Of course, it won't be anywhere near top end PC performance and graphics, but it is a great starting point for PC gaming if you don't care about all the bells and whistles.

Well, I'm not retarded, for a start, so I don't sit in a corner crying and making a mountain of a molehill because a couple of ports a year for games I hardly care about sometimes, UNDER SPECIFIC CIRCUMSTANCES, may have a couple of instances of traversal stutter.

Especially when the "glorious alternative" people like you have to offer is "butter smooth, very stable 30 fps in fake 4K" on an awkward trashbin the size of a bathroom water boiler.
