Just look at early 80s 90s anime... There are tons of perfect - idealized - portrayals of men and women. Yet we have these topmodels roam as protagonists. Tifa is also on the we must sell this game spectrum, just like this mentally handicapped looking Fable girl that was linked above (who will surely turn into another topmodel).

How big snd how do you know?
There are here and there polls and stats about this. Ff14 for example has almost a split of 50:50 male vs female player base. I think Rebirth had similar results published by famitsu for their market. But in general jrpgs always had great appeal to women, like most of Japanese media like manga novel etc.

Let’s stop with this backward take please. A big chunk of the FF fan base is actually made of women. There’s one fact and applies to all: beauty sells to anyone regardless of sex, gender or sexuality. Also Cloud, Barret and co. are “hot” and I’m pretty sure no straight man would like to play consciously or not with an unattractive man in a game, right? Most male protagonists are after all good looking men (Geralt, Nathan, Snake ecc). Same expectations come from female players and the rest of the community — except the one at RE that is. Beauty sells to everyone. And thanks god!
Exactly, if Cloud started to flirt with me, then I'd knife him in the neck.

In other news, the game industry is set to rebound in 2024 after realising they should be making games their audiences want, not what internet activists want to see.

Could you provide a link to the famitsu poll? My skills at searching for it seems bad.

Tell me, how is that different than putting beautiful actress in movies?

The fact is people like to see beautiful people on their entertainment.
Because Japanese/eastern game characters tend to not look realistic? Most look like Anime/Manga characters made in 3D, they are stylised/fantasy cartoon characters whereas western games tend to (mostly) strive for realism in their character designs. Western studios could go for this 3D anime look but then they'd be criticised of copying off Japan/cultural appropriation rather than creating western looking characters so damned if they do and damned if they don't.

But the realistic look is also part of the problem as then you walk the uncanny valley tightrope whereby small flaws in realistic characters are more prevalent because our brain knows what faces look like.

Yeah, thing is ...

For every retard like you who will boycott/wait on this game due to Tifa being hot as fuck, there'll be ten thousand people who will pre order for that reason alone.

So boycott to your heart's content, you pedo marxist cunt.

Will like to see how this poster look like in real life, how he interacts with those women 'he knows'

Western developers pandering to white knights, what a waste of development time and costs.....

Glad that Sony new COO is taking a stance...

I still honestly don't get the hate for Aloy, she's sunburnt due to the environment (pretty impressive effects in the game have her actually sweating in the desert regions) and wearing no make up. And that screen shot is cherry picked using a close up camera.

Abby is rather meh, but again, lifestyle, environment etc. I can see why the Devs chose that direction as they have gone for a more realistic look in a post apocalyptic world. But I do kinda understand though when people say she isn't that attractive.

The other two no excuse however.

Yeah I also don't get the hate for Aloy. She's not a supermodel, but she is fairly attractive for the environment she's in. She's fit while not being overly muscular, and if you really want you can actually put warpaint that is basically makeup on her. She's even got long hair, which for reasons that I can't fathom, is rare among western games.

They don’t have go “anime” to make their characters good looking….

Most western devs make their character look old and beat up because in eyes that’s more “grounded”.

So the only FF I’ve played is 13 for about 2 hours.

Couldn’t get in to it.

Is this game the same style or is it more of an action game now?

I can’t lie, I want to support this.

Well I didn't mean all games of course, but that is still heavily stylised. Part of the issue is that as western Devs strive for this realistic look where possible they use scans of actual people to create their characters and that then causes the uncanny valley effect, eastern Devs mostly don't do that, they hand make those characters or heavily modify scans so they are more stylised. You can see this in games like Final Fantasy, Stellar Blade, pretty much any eastern fighting game.

Which is right? Well, for me both are, I have no issues with the look of either but then I personally don't see an issue with many western game characters that others deem to be ugly (I see way uglier people in the real world on a daily basis)

I think she grew fat for no lore reason.

Western devs can do whatever they want it’s their game, I take issue when western devs and journalists start criticizing Asian devs for making their characters good looking.

freedom works both ways, if western devs are free to make characters ugly then Asian devs are free make characters beautiful.

this shit is unacceptable….

It's more action based and it's mainly a real time system like a typical aRPG. However there are elements of crossover.

1. You still select abilities from menus during battle. You can bind some of them to trigger +face buttons
2. You will have to do materia micro management in a lot of cases if it's like ffvii remake. Materia is like an augment jewel you put into your weapons and armour. So if you're fighting enemies weak to wind, you'd put Aero in a slot.
3. You can hack and slash on easy, except the bosses
4. Although Cloud will be your main, you'll have to switch between party members during combat to build efficient ATB

Watch this for a sim combat

Oh that I agree with, like I said, I like both eastern and western games. But whereas you take (legitimate) issue with people criticising eastern Devs for their mostly beautiful characters I take issue with the generalisation that western Devs make ugly/uglify on purpose their game characters especially when cherry picking specific screen grabs when normally the character looks fine.

Sure, some western game characters are made to look older, more worn etc. (Returnal, TLoU etc.) but I don't have an issue with that either so long as it fits the game/scenario. Like I don't have an issue with stylised eastern characters with sometimes over the top proportions (eg. Dragons Crown, Stellar Blade, cannot wait for that game)

Final Fantasy characters look perfectly fine to me, they fit the style the game is going for and they are instantly recognisable even they they use the typical 3d anime style.

Here is the thing….most criticism of western game’s character designs is among gaming forums or other social media but Asian devs have deal with the fact western reviewers can give poor score just because they got triggered by the character designs.

my issue is western gaming media thinks everyone needs to follow their mind set if not they get shit on like example I showed with my last post.

True, cultural imperialism by western media is also a turn off.

If you are more into gameplay and action, I recommend Lightning Returns. It is my favorite post SNES FF game.

Oh, very true, and DF (well, one individual) went down in a lot of people's estimations due to comments about Stellar and rightly so, those comments were just so blinkered and unnecessary (the other two did seem to wince slightly and try and change the subject though to be fair, but they should have just said he was flat out wrong imho). It's going to be a fun time when that game is released.

it is amusing that people behaving like some caveman discovered fire over something that should be already common stuff everywhere

this is show the changing of entertaiment landscape in past few years end up leaving the audiences in 'thirst' over something that should be norm.

this and Stellar Blade reception is good example. well atleast so far we see asians developers doesnt follow the western movement YET and i hope it keep that way. this level of receptions might be what they need for that to happen.

in the end things are simple. no need to complicated things with unnecessary sentiment or political propaganda. gaming is part of reality escape for real life stress relief. all it need is 'soul' poured over it by developers. it is no need pour something that born out of inferiority feeling just for something that constantly reeks of validations.
Its cultural differences. Younger generation in the west are being radicalised into political movements, and thus those people will have an influence in newly produced games. Unfortunately for the big companies pushing for this, the target audience aren't buying it and DON'T want more pandering/preaching in their games. Hopefully westerns devs/publishers wake up and actually look at what their audience(s) wants.

It's about time. The comic book industry seems to be realizing that also. I've picked up some comics recently and there's definitely a move in some series to make the both male and female characters hot again (ex. most of the girls in the X-Men).

It has taken a couple years, but I finally think companies, whether gaming, comics, or other media, have seen sales crater so badly that they've caught on that crazy extremists on Twitter, whether left or right leaning, are an infinitesimally small audience who don't actually buy the products they criticize, nor do they have any actual intention in ever doing so.

See also people who whine about the WNBA or women's soccer not getting the same recognition or salaries as their male counterparts. You want those women to make the same money as the men? Then fix the underlying problem and buy merch, buy season passes, and watch the games live on TV, but they don't actually do any of that.

IMO this argument has three angles that should not be mixed up.

1 - Games/movies do not need sexy characters for the sake of it. The appearance of a character must fit their respective roles (unless its FANTASY). Say whatever you want about Abby, Aloy, or the woman from Returnal, their designs make sense in the story. You can argue with their respective roles, but their looks are on point.

That is VERY different from point 2.

2 - Purposedly designing ugly characters for crazed ideologies: this is the case of MJ, the Fable ogre, the new "nerfed" Lara Croft, or the MC of Control. This is a problem and needs to stop. Creators who do this deserve to be pushed out of business.

3 - Estern developers creating beautiful characters in FANTASY/anime-inspired games: Beauty doesn't get in the way of the story, so it should be celebrated. Everyone loves beauty, even the wackos who claim otherwise and won't say it publicly.

Superheroes, androids, and fantasy characters are SUPER human, so they MUST be beautiful too, for fanservice AND narrative consistency. People asking for these characters to be more "grounded" are clueless, if not straight-up stupid.

Eh, being superhuman doesnt really make you are pretty, Nobody ever had problems with super villains being ugly

If you are superhuman, the minimum is that you are very fit (strong, muscular, lean). As for facial features, an ugly person contradicts the idea of being superior. It would be a weird choice to portray Superman as some random guy instead of Henry Cavil. That applies to supervillains too. Making them ugly is for a kids show (pretty - good, ugly - bad) but they tend to be beautiful, too.

The fake controversy around Stellar Blade or Nier back in the day is even worse because none in his right mind would design an ugly android. More so, a squad of androids which are regarded as "angels" or superheroes. Wokeness aside, it wouldn't make any sense from a narrative standpoint.

At the end of the day, both dev groups cater to a specific group of people. The 'problem' is that one group is FAR bigger than the other, yet it is treated as a niche audience, which is insane.

I DO agree, however, that if a character fits the story to be unattractive, then yes, go for it, no questions asked. Bryanne of Tarth in Game of Thrones is one of the best characters in the story, and she's purposefully unattractive, and the characters around her ACT ACCORDINGLY, which adds to her arc and her character. What those retarded ideologues do not understand, is that by making EVERY female character look like Bryanne of Tarth WITHOUT having an arc and the appropriate context/responses, the whole point is lost, what makes the character special is lost, and it's all done to appease a generation of mentally unhinged individuals who don't have the money to buy your product anyway.

imagine being a normal woman at work, just trying to get your job done. When some sweatlord mi'lady neckbeard with pink hair flobbles over with pictures of semi naked animated women to ask your opinion in the name of social justice.

100% that story never happened and 100% this is a lonely loser fuckhead who has never left their home let alone actually interacted with a woman. the fact they say "women i know" instead of just friends like us normies would say tells you all you need to know about this creep.

Soon enough in cosplay events, half of them would be tifa in swimsuits and the other half would be eve of stellar babe in her sexiest costumes that would come out soon.
It's amazing how the prudes don't understand that everyone loves hot characters. When given the choice of any characters to cosplay, you see a hell of a lot more Slave Leia, Black Cat, Cammy, etc than ugly characters like Abby.
