Yes, I agree they got it cheap. But it's still a 4 billion dollar investment. It's not pocket change. For what it is, it's a great price, and it's probably a lower value because Lucas owned 100% of Lucasfilm, so they only had to deal with one guy who is already very wealthy, and old, and tired. Better than dealing with a ton of shareholders.

I dont think Lucas sold it to make a profit (Well he did, but i dont think that was his primary focus) I imagine he sold it because he wanted to let go of it and insure it went to a capable company to manage the brands. The man has money, I highly doubt this had anything to do with raising more capital, esspecially at his age.

This is a bigger shakeup than the Marvel acquisition. Disney is tearing it up.

-New additions to the themeparks
-SW Pixar films
-Marvel/Star Wars crossovers

Wow, this is megaton news to me! :0 Though I fell out of love with the series over the years, I grew up with the original Star Wars movies. They were a fond memory of my childhood and there'll always be a spot for them.

George slipped up with the prequels but with him passing the torch to new directors working with the material the potential is huge.

Plus, with Disney owning ILM that could be their in-house effects company for future Marvel/Avengers films, no?

Oh wow, so today must fucking SUCK at 20th Century Fox. They won't get to distribute a Star Wars film for the first time ever.

So like if we have a top tier Star Trek vs Star Wars battle and they raise the NASA budget.

This could be the best decade ever.

correct about everything
George Lucas: Smartest business man in Hollywood:

  • Direct the biggest cultural phenomenons of the last 40 years
  • Produce a bunch of movies with other director
  • Sit back and let the merchandising money roll in
  • Direct another 3 films after a 22 year break
  • Collect more money from merchandise
  • Sell out to Disney for another 4 billion
Sure there's also THX, Skywalker Sound, ILM and Lucas Arts... But yeah. This man has never had a money problem.

This news stills blows my mind... and more Star Wars sequels. I already thought the three prequels were needless, do we really need more?

he did in the mid 80s, after his divorce and howard the duck, the misunderstood masterpiece. sold pixar because of it.

Not sure how I feel about this. Happy we're getting new movies, but they'll probably end up shitting all over the expanded universe.

I do think its a big acquisition considering its all based on Star Wars being as healthy as it was pre-prequels...and that Disney can create something to pull people in compared to 'Vaders Genesis' which the prequels basically were in 2/3 after the gimmick of 'Star Wars is back' was over. For them to expand and buy in its a good move I suppose; can't think of any other acquisition comparable.

Disney got it CHEAP. The first film alone will bring in a billion dollars easily. I'm perplexed at how Lucasfilm was valued so low.

I think you need to go see what the last movie took in world wide. It did a lot, but not a billion dollars.

George Lucas is getting FOUR BILLION DOLLARS, man. Half of that is in cash. CASH. That's 2 thousand million dollars. Most of the world will never, ever see that type of money, and he gets to deposit a check that has 12 zeros before the decimal. What's cray cray about it, is that a large portion of that is going to be in Disney stock. What do you think is going to happen to Disney stock after this news hit? His lineage will that rockafeller money for generations to come.

Mr. Lucas is a stupidly wealthy man that got out right around the time that he wanted to, and has the capital to create absolutely anything he wants. I'm sure he's comfortable with what he's letting go.

Just read this on AICN

There's a whole new generation of STAR WARS fans, and they worship the prequels like folks my age worshipped the original trilogy.

This cant seriously be true

So when will we get Spider-man meets Luke Skywalker crossover?

And this is probably a good thing if Star Wars is kept away from George Lucas.

I dont understand why all of you people want the Thrawn trilogy.

Yes it was great, but its 20 years old, its over and done.

Lets do a brand new story.

Besides everyone would just shit all over a Thrawn movie trilogy anyway comparing it to how its not as good as the books.

I've read the Thrawn trilogy at least 3 times. I want something new.

A little ironic though that Lucas is so proud of his story as the "Hollywood rebel" who fought against the system and big movie companies but in the end he sells his company to Disney.

Disney is sitting really nice. I'm not upset by this news at all but actually excited. New life breathed into the franchise.

So, let me run this down real quick.

The Disney company now owns:

Jim Henson Studios / The Muppets
Pixar
Marvel Comics / Marvel Films
LucasFilm (Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and yes, Howard The Duck :p )
LucasArts (I'm assuming)
Industrial Light & Magic
Skywalker Sound

This is.. insane.

Mark my words, they might not be discussing the Indy franchise right now on the conference call, but I'm fairly certain they'll look into relaunching that brand as well.

Disney doesn't own Jim Henson Studios, they are still privately owned. But they do own the Muppets.
Also Disney owns ABC Television.

Nope. Only the core Muppets from The Muppet Show. Fraggle Rock Muppets and the Jim Henson Company are not owned by Disney, although if the Fraggle Rock movie does well they'll probably buy them up too.

If it's not Thrawn Trilogy followed by Dark Empire I will be pissed.

So pretty much I am already mad b/c you know there is no way they would do something that made so much sense.
