EDGE: Why "increasingly frustrated journalists" need MS to reveal its new Xbox

Security systems do not check which network you are on because it's implicit in the fact you are ON the network when you are interacting with the security system. Why would you check which network you are on if you are on the network of the security system already?

What security systems do is authenticate and verify you, not check which network you are.

Sure they do.

I design network security that discriminates against specific AS and networks all the time.

Granted, I imagine this implementation isn't quite what you're referring to, but it's certainly possible, certainly happens, etc.

They have lost a lot of the core? I scream bullshit. The numbers from NPD suggest otherwise.

They haven't lost anyone. Maybe some folks here on GAF have prematurely jumped ship due to rumors but we'll see in the course of 8-9 weeks what everyone thinks.

They have lost a lot of the core? I scream bullshit. The numbers from NPD suggest otherwise.

Maybe not, but they've turned off some people, myself included. I need more than just Halo and Gears. Microsoft needs to tremendously step up their IP catalog.

depends on how sensitive the materials you have are?

you are thinking of a one way security system, not security on both the client and the server?

Those are two way handshakes using a private and public key and storing said public keys in the different system to verify comminucation send over the different networks are the real deal. The security of the network is garuanteed through the keys, not the network.

But it is just rumor. I've seen no evidence, only hearsay. Even the leaked XDK which went out of it's way to specify Kinect was required, didn't do the same for "always online". In fact the very term "Always online" and "online required" are to different things.

and with that you infer that every rumor is equally untrustworthy and that it doesn't matter how reliable the people reporting them have been in reporting rumors in the past or that it doesn't matter how many people are saying the same thing.

it isn't 'just' rumor. it's nonsense to argue that all rumors are equal and that no weight should be given to anything other than official announcements. if you had to assign a percentage of certain to this, what would it be? how would you figure out that percentage?

Assassins Creed 1 was announced after 360 was already released... It was revealed at E3 2006. Maybe she was talking about it for 3 years in private, but then that wouldnt make the situation different at all

(and as a ps3 exclusive)

Was going to say that.

It's funny she mentioned it, i distinctly remember the Whole AssCreed 1 incident, being shown behind closed doors as a PS3 exclusive (but journalists were reporting they were playing with a X360 controller and the console running the game was hidden under a blanket :D ).

Anyway.

So, if i understand this correctly, EDGE and journalists are frustrated because they know something, yet are not allowed to deny the rumors that are making the Durango sound so bad ?
That sentence has me cautiously optimistic.

Kinect tells me they can eventually win back the casual crown potentially.

But everything else rumored says they have lost a lot of the core.

Time will tell. I personally have never been this turned off about an upcoming next gen console. =(

Not even for the Xbox 360? I remember lots of negative views back then. Xbox 1.5? Not nearly as powerful at the PS3. DVD again? Games were running on MACs at E3 and poorly at that. 720p only? PS3 was going to be 1080p! Only the controller got any good press really. People didn't really seem to care about dashboard features that much. Chat was appreciated, but achievements were too new to understand how important they turned out to be and XBLA was seen as a way to sell us old arcade games again. This was stuff being discussed even AFTER it was announced too.

as I recall, Project Assassin had been announced (or leaked) as a multiplatform title before it was unveiled by Sony under the final name, but it was never said by Sony to be exclusive, they just had exclusive unveiling rights or some crazy shit. a lot of us never believed it was exclusive.

This is one of those "problems" that will go away as soon as the device is actually announced. I generally find Edge's reporting to be solid but at this point all they are doing is pointing out how awkward this brief window of time is, where rumors surface just before a new product is revealed. Three months from now the conversation will be entirely different.

So you believe the gaming media will be super positive after the reveal even if the rumors are true?

I honestly don't believe that. I hope they have more integrity than that and all this fuss over always online is in fact due to anticonsumerism and not because they haven't revealed the system yet.

I have a lot of concerns about the next Xbox, but sympathy for the poor journalists who thrive off tech reveals and blockbuster previews and exclusive interviews just aren't among them.

I would be perfectly happy if they did not exist, so I do not mind if they are starving. My distaste for the hype machine spans virtually all tech fields, from hype surrounding Apple's next iPhone to reveals of new televisions to the reveals of new gaming machines.

This is how tech journalism deserves to be treated:

My goodness this was hilarious.

Personally no. I wanted a 360 despite all of that.

ITT: People in denial.

Seriously why don't you all just admit that you can't just wait anymore? That you are just so curious to know right now what the deal is with nextbox? I can accept that, even I want to know.

What makes me angry is people talking nonsense. I don't know if Microsoft is runned poorly - they might as well be, I don't know if nextbox will be always online - it might as well be. The thing is, all these stuff have nothing to do with microsoft not revealing anything yet. Just because Sony did doesn't mean Microsoft has to. Just because people thing the situation doesn't look good for Microsoft right now, doesn't mean it will be the same when the time comes. We don't know what their plan is, why they are being secretive etc.

Deal with it.

After all, a day will come that we will know.

I think they must announce it as soon as possible. Because as of now everything is devs saying that PS4 is so powerful and easy to develop for, talking about its promising features, that now they also have the Halo guys. And that the Xbox is only said that has mandatory Kinect, mandatory always on-line DRM, that is moving more its focus from core games (or from games), no second hand, that devs are going to have less RAM available than in PS4, is expensive and is less powerful than PS4.

They must start soon to highlight their pros and to minimize their cons, and to show hyping games until it's too late or most people will be too excited with PS4 and will already have decided that they are going to skip this Xbox.

OrthGate is the first time I've ever thought MS needs to hurry up and start their marketing and promotion train, even if its just for the announcement.

Rumours are rumours and never matter until the actual final product comes out, but a gaffe of that sort and the mainstream media looking on now is making this especially a bad look.

But then I think, the May announcement is actually beneficial for them because it lets OrthGate cool down a bit. And by then people will be presumably starved for leaks again.

At this point, pretty sure everyone is just fed up with the rumours and wants the shit announced so we know how the DRM works and where to direct our hate if it is indeed a shitty solution to a non-issue.

This is not a good answer to the question/problem at hand. Microsoft is currently being run very poorly and all you can do is post a picture in response?

Microsoft needs to create some momentum for this thing and start creating some good press.

Tough titty man.

The point is, when the reveal happens, these vague, generalized speculations about what "always connected" could possibly mean will be thoroughly explained. A lot of the fuss about these rumors is rooted in confusion about what it really means for us in the end, and when they start hyping this thing up, they are going to have to spill all of the beans. The narrative in gaming "journalism" will finally reflect facts.

In the meantime, they are surely enjoying watching us absolutely freaking out about anything remotely related to it.

How do you win the casual crowd at that price?

It's incredibly annoying when journalists chase after this stuff in interviews. If you're going to ask me about unannounced stuff once... fine, I get it; we can play that song and dance. But when they keep pressing after I make it clear I'm not going to discuss unannounced things and try and trip me up to make me unintentionally leak something... just fuck off. That's not journalism, it's straight up unprofessional.

WONT SOMEONE PLEASE THINK OF THE GAME JOURNALISTS!

why not confirm that the next console doesn't require a connection to the internet to work? people keep saying it's just rumors without supporting evidence but it's not is it? someone working at Microsoft belittled people worried about such a thing, and in their attempt to damage control that public display of stupidity they very carefully danced around the issue.

that plays completely into the rumors and if they AREN'T pursuing such a direction, I don't see what a comment along the lines of 'If we are working on a new console I assure you we wouldn't be going in that direction' could do.

I'll be happy to be wrong, but when you have people who work for Microsoft defending such a direction and other people who are pro Microsoft saying that they've heard the same things and don't see what the fuss is about... the degree of certainty for these rumors is pretty high, and climbing.

Aside from the journalists "wanting stuff to write about", overall the situation looks gloom. I'm sure MS has at least something that'll be great and interesting, but if the rumors are true, are they too significant to overcome? Are they going to put far less focus on gaming, and make it more of a living room entertainment box overall?

With how horrible these rumors are, I do have to say that I would believe MS would come out and shut them down if they were false considering the staggering amount of negativity building against them. They're letting Sony absorb so much mindshare now it's shocking, especially considering MS isn't usually the "wait and see what we got" company. Their silence is pointing more to me at least, that they are taking all the time they can to spin something good from the negative attention they're getting hammered with. The fact that they haven't yet, is shocking.

Even i cant wait - i love this Boss like "i dont give a fuck" attitude by MS. 360 finishing this gen on a high...and they're taking advantage of that with their next console.

Is 360 and XBL one MS most successful project in the last decade? They're making money from the damn thing..outside of Windows and Office that must be huge for MS.

I think Microsoft vastly underestimated consumers and developers expectations for their next console in terms of raw power and online features.

I think Microsoft vastly underestimated Sony and their humble and open approach to the next generation.

I think Microsoft delayed their announcement to refocus their message because of the above.

But I don't know.

Yes I know cheeky thread title but interesting article. Although a lot of it is trying to get devs to trip over themselves and reveal something they shouldn't. Nice attempt at least on the part of EDGE. And I thought they had a solid source for news of this machine? From the tone of this article that source must have dried up.

http://www.edge-online.com/features/the-long-silence-why-microsoft-needs-to-reveals-its-next-xbox-and-quickly/

Why would these "journalists" be so concerned about making sure that Microsoft's message doesn't get lost or that the public perception of the next xbox somehow needs to stay positive?

So the games industry and game journalists are pissed off that Microsoft is making them wait. This is not going to filter out into the mainstream audience in any way that is going to hurt Microsoft or the next xbox in any serious way. I thought people would know this by now. People might think they know better than Microsoft when it comes to their own product, but they don't. Folks really don't realize how easily these console manufacturers, particularly Microsoft, can command attention. Why should they feel the need to rush when everybody is going to be paying attention to what they announce and show regardless whenever they choose to do it? E3 hasn't happened yet, May hasn't even come yet, and already people are somehow convinced that Microsoft is in trouble and needs to respond quickly. No, they do not.

Microsoft, simply with the unveiling of the next Xbox, will get the kind of press that will ultimately matter most. If after that game journalists or forum goers still want something to complain about, then so be it, but the juiciest and most interesting information will filter through all the noise. These are, after all, most of the same game journalists that pretty much all predicted the 360 was going to be demolished by the PS3. What seems to annoy people, and to some extent I feel it, too, is that the announcement of the PS4 didn't seem to open up the next gen floodgates like some people anticipated it would. I suspected in the back of my mind something like this would happen. The train really hasn't left the station without Microsoft. If anything, Microsoft are holding up the train, which doesn't necessarily hurt them as long as E3 hasn't happened and May isn't even here yet. When one of the two makes a move, people naturally want to know what the other's response is going to be. Microsoft, for whatever reason, didn't feel the need to rush out a response to the PS4 announcement. Hell, they even pushed back their event. Microsoft obviously feels they have nothing to worry about, and here's the interesting part. They may be right. People complaining on forums and game journalists getting pissed off from the anticipation isn't going to mean much to Microsoft, because they can "fix" things as easily as the day they announce.

People who already weren't interested in anything Microsoft had to offer will still hold their opinions of whatever Microsoft's plans end up being, people who were already very excited will likely become more so, and then there will be the people in the middle. This is how it always is. If E3 passes us by and Microsoft has no next gen announcement made, that's when Microsoft can start worrying, because then and only then would they truly be in all the "trouble" that is being exaggerated right now. The worst thing Microsoft could ever do is issue some knee jerk reaction that ends up falling on its face. Microsoft has every right to take their time to get it right. The PS4 event was successful and I loved it. Microsoft has to bring it. Why are people opposed to Microsoft taking their time? Just because people are pulling their hair out on forums and sites are reporting rumors still not yet confirmed by Microsoft?

I'd bet it's not so much the console that isn't ready to show - it's probably the games. MS may have gotten a little rusty making games and maybe they've formed their new studios a bit too late. Meanwhile a lot of big 3rd party games for the end of this year have already been revealed, so they can't use those.

They haven't lost anyone. Maybe some folks here on GAF have prematurely jumped ship due to rumors but we'll see in the course of 8-9 weeks what everyone thinks.

Oh no, they've definitely lost some people, as people genuinely don't like what they are hearing. We all have very strong opinions on this. I don't see what the big deal is, other people think Microsoft is destroying gaming itself. So they have lost some people, but the real question is will it be enough to even matter?

We hardcores tend to get it wrong sometimes. Is this another one of those cases? I think so, because no way does this stuff strike me as anywhere near as risky as Kinect was and is on the whole.
