Well, i'm prolly going for WiiU in a few month then for PS4 when it goes cheap... and if Sony doesn't act like Microsoft.
Just like previous gen i'm afraid.

The success of others absolutely infuriates me.
All that literature and I'm still seeing questions. This whole thing seems like a mess from the outside looking in.

Nice to see answers popping up. A lot of this sounds fair to me.

"fair" is only a word i'd use if i wasn't expecting it to play games at all...like hey, i thought this was just a bicycle, it can play games too? oh, lotta limitations....well, i mean, it's a bike after all, that's prolly fair

If Sony does the same, I think I'm done with console gaming.

Same for me!
How are people saying that this doesn't sound too bad?

They just ruined the hobby I've had for decades. I guess I'll start looking to spend my $$$$$$ on a different hobby.

If I won't own it, I won't buy it.

Highlights (lowlights?):

No renting, no loaning. No private sales (unless selling to someone who has been on your friends list for 30 days)

Console Checks in Every 24 hours

Trade-ins are up to the publisher and only at participating retailers

You can give a game to a friend only if they have been on your friends list for 30 days, and then it is stuck with them.

Up to 10 family members can play your games from any console at any time

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I swear I saw a thread earlier today which had some publisher or developer talk about how Game and some other store was "better" for trading than Steam.

It's all starting to make sense now.

I think that's all good except the statement about gifting games to friends. I think by saying you can only give a game once they mean the original owner can only gift it to one person. I'm not sure it means the person who receives it cannot gift it once they own it.

Another example of an issue that requires more clarity beyond this release from MS.

That would be so if there wasn't a several hundred dollar piece of shit piece of hardware required to play them on!
For many (including me) the hardware, literally everything about it, including the anti-consumer policies means that all the games in the world won't tempt me to buy into it.
Putting squirty cream on a dick doesn't make it an iced finger, tbh.

I'm not so optimistic. I really think people will either go along with it or even warm up to it. I won't and I'm not defending it, I'm just predicting what the general public will do.

Shit just got real...

Very horrible news for Xbone, great news for PS4. The only positive thing would be that you can share your games with up to 10 family members. But only if family members means normal friends and all people can play the shared game at the same time together. I doubt it though.

What really worries me is the sentence about used games, that the publishers decide, if you may resell your games. I have a strong feeling, that Sony will do the same now, which would be very bad.

I can see how this would rub some people the wrong way, but this all fits in with my current setup and habits, so I'm still completely on board (also buying a PS4; I get everything).

That said, an all-digital console seems like something that's about 10 years ahead of its time for most folks. Xbox One should have been more of a bridge. I think MS is going to lose a lot of customers going into next gen.

I reckon Sony will have anti-used games but they will leave it up to pubs. I can image EA blackmailing Sony by not releasing FIFA/Battlefield etc on the PS4 unless they have the same anti-used DRM as MS. I want to be proven wrong!

Man i wish everyone just stuck with online passes compared to this bullshit we are getting now, it was literally the perfect compromise.

If they leave it to publishers, then "they" don't "have it". There's no way they can block it.

They are completely and utterly deluded if they think that the average consumer will somehow understand that the disc can't be sold after they're done with it.

I don't know what planet they're living on, but forget about us hardcores for a second. There's just no chance any regular person will be okay with not being able to sell a disc once they're done with it.

Yup, Microsoft is out of their mind, if they are really going through with this, they better be DAMN sure people who are buying this console know about these policies before they buy it, otherwise MS is going to be in for a VERY bad time. The Xbone really needs to fail for the good of this industry. I swear this is the type of shit that can cause another crash. I really hope Sony isn't going to do this too. This is depressing.

Those things don't really affect me because I don't buy used nor resell games (I did it once in 5 years or something). I don't really lend games to others because I have no friends (I do but gaming habits are different) and other members of my family don't play games.

However, it's really unacceptable consumer rights-wise and I really hope Sony doesn't go that route. I also have others things I want my PS4 to do (region-free and PS3-like account system management).

I'm set to buy a PS4 for now...and I don't plan on buying a X1 at all. Then again, even without all those restrictions, I have a PS3 and a 360 and don't like playing on the 360 anyway except for N64-era Rareware games and Cave shmups.

There really must be a VERY, VERY GOOD reason to get me to support the X1 system. And even with that reason, I'll think twice or thrice before walking the plank and jump.

So good to see fellow GAFers taking a stand in this thread and not buying this utter bullshit console.

No amount of exclusives will change this.

Take a good look at this shit and then think back to how we have enjoyed games over the years. Certainly puts things into perspective, does it not? Drop your 'party' affiliation nonsense and look at it for what it is outside of that box.

Fuck this noise. I almost exclusively buy used games, and resell all the time. I have no interest in being stuck with a $60 purchase that I end up not being pleased with, as well as having to buy any used game at Gamestop (because really, what else does 'participating retailers' mean in regards to used game stores?). At least there's hope that the PS4 will continue offering free games every month on PS+, which will make up for the fact that they're almost assuredly going to have very similar restrictions, and if there's no free games or cheap as hell sales prices then Sony can fuck off too.

With Xbox One you can game offline for up to 24 hours on your primary console, or one hour if you are logged on to a separate console accessing your library. Offline gaming is not possible after these prescribed times until you re-establish a connection, but you can still watch live TV and enjoy Blu-ray and DVD movies
Nope. I want no part in this system now.
Thank God we are still allowed to watch TV though. Or play any system that came before this steaming pile of shit.

Yup. If Sony follows suit I'll tell both of them to shove their consoles where the sun don't shine.
Agree 100%

Why are people now thinking Sony will do the same? Sony has not done anything to even hint towards this. They have denied many questions regarding some of these things already. Do you want Sony to do the same thing so that you can justify purchasing a Xbone?

I'm listening to this madman. :)
Spot on. The bolded part is what baffles me the most. I jokingly said that the Xbox One was a console that EA would create if they were hardware manufacturer. Looks like I might have been right...

I agree with both you and Stumpokapow.

To your point, I could be wrong but I think one of the Sony guys(?) even tweeted during MS' conference that it was the system that EA always wanted.

That plus Sony not getting any favors from EA and them seemingly being highly interested in low-internet markets and talking up that internet will not be a PS4 requirement is now my thin thread of hope that even if they do have some form of DRM, so as not to entirely piss off EA, like the return of online pass, it will be far less draconian than Microsoft's complicated mess.

At least I hope so.

And even after you get passed comprehending the complicated used policies I still hate the internet check-in and the Kinect must be plugged in thing (if they want to put in the box so that devs will know everyone in the userbase has one, fine, but don't make me plug that thing and it's always-on camera and microphone in to use the system at all). Also digital rules for retail, ugh.

They're not as bad as this, I assure you.

I hope you're right. :)

Lol that's ridic. It probably means accounts on the same system.

(How does it know that?)

Still think Sony is itching to add that feature?

MS after shooting themselves in the foot has given Sony the same gun. Tell's them 10 bullets in the clip, one for each toe. MS asks Sony, "How many shots do you want to take?"

Letting the publisher handing the reins for used game sales will suck though.

"Hmm, haven't checked GAF in a couple of hours. Oh hmm, this topic looks interesting, I wonder what's going on in this thre-HOLY GHOST ON A BOOGIE BOARD!"

Wow, when I said this was going to get worse before it gets better, I honestly had no idea.

Im thinking something like this:

-I buy an XBO
-Up to 10 members of my family has to create their account on my XBO
-They are then free to go over anyone elses house and, using their account credentials, they can log in.
-MS servers with check their account against my XBO and let them the games registered to it.

I dont know for sure but that kind makes sense to me. Theyre careful by saying "family" which makes me think theres going to be something there to verify family members.

But this isn't really a check at all. Unless they're going full Orwell and using Kinect to do facial recognition or something, I can just make accounts for my friends on my XB. Worst case, my friends need to come over one time to make accounts on my XB. They need a major downside to declaring someone "family". Probably making access to particular games exclusive is not enough; they may go all-out and just say that only one person in the family can be playing games at one time period.

So I guess the question for Sony is, do they need the big publishers (most likely EA and Activision) more than the big publishers need them? I would imagine most of the Japanese companies are fine with used games staying the way they are. I'd even imagine Ubisoft being fine that way.

Would EA and Activision be willing to leave money on the table by not supporting the PS4 just because it allows used games? Or does Sony feel like they need EA and Activision more than the good will towards consumers?

Activision despite all their other faults have actually been one of the better pubs when it comes to DRM, EA is the one pushing this

Give your games to friends: game publishers can enable you to give your disc-based games to your friends. There are no fees charged as part of these transfers. There are two requirements: you can only give them to people who have been on your friends list for at least 30 days and each game can only be given once.

I do not understand this sentence. Does it mean that if I give my disc to a friend, he can't give it back to me? If so, can he still transfer the game to another friend of his?

Sooooo... if you want to sell your game to someone, you just add them to you friends list for 30 days, then sell the game. Why all this overhead?

So I just want to double check something.

When I sell my games, I do it through Ebay, Half.com, or Amazon... Would I still be able to do that? No?

Negative. "We designed Xbox One so game publishers can enable you to trade in your games at participating retailers." Most likely gamestop/ebgames and maybe bestbuy. Maybe.

From what I understand you give it to him permanently. I might be wrong this though.
