Shin Megami Tensei IV Review Thread

I own it, and I am constantly fighting the urge to trade it in. It's just such a PS1 game in every way except for the new character art, and it shows from head to toe. It's a damn shame, because they put so much effort into new content and new UI elements for P4G.

Obviously, it's a 3DS port of a PS1 port of a Saturn game, so some of that is to be expected, but man, that game has not aged well at all. They should've just gone whole-hog and remade it from the ground up.

That seems more like an issue with the game itself than the extra content (or lack of it) incorporated into the 3DS version. It added VA work, 30 new demons, demon compedium, and revamped the map system (which was a limited app/spell in the original, rather than a permanent second screen). I would have liked more story content like in the Persona ports or even Devil Survivor's 3DS ports though.

Leaving the Phantom Society plot hanging when they know they won't be making any Soul Hackers sequel is pretty annoying, but I guess they never expected high sales from it, due to being a port, rather than an actual remake.

SMT has always been less about character development, right, totally a different experience from the Persona series.

I'm still fairly a newbie to the series with SMT Strange Journey. Even that one had flat characters.

It's best to look at the characters as tangible representations of a specific ideology. While character development is minimal—most of them don't really have much of a personality to begin with—tracking the changes to their outward personality and mannerisms as they are slowly corrupted by the ideology they choose to associate themselves with is really interesting, and makes up for the lack of character depth.

Yeah I don't think an ATLUS game can ever get high scores/sales until they go all flashy and 3d.

Lot's of complaints from people complaining about "lazy graphics". It's a shame but I get that no 3d battles seems like a step back for some newcomers. I hope the Nintendo deal will offset some of that.

Fuck the "lazy graphics" argument.
People crying for a game that isn't SMT IV. These people need to get over it and just go play something that meets their demands.

Nocturne did have 3D battles heh.

The series took a step back in that regard and it is understandable some people are not that happy about it.

Are the reviews really calling out the 2D first person battles? I've only skimmed them for dungeon exploration stuff but it seems like most talk about how good the game looks (world map aside).

Yeah there are not really any complaints about that and Nags should calm down.

Not really. In fact everyone is pretty positive about the battles.

Is the criticism for the 2D drawings because they're apparently recycled? Aren't they redrawn?

Some people just prefer 3D models and that's the biggest issue, but some people don't like the new demon designs that much either.

Asset recycling in Megaten? Well I NEVER.

I don't really have strong opinions either way about battles being 2D or 3D, though from what I've seen the 2D artwork looks nice and clean.

Can't wait for this. I suppose I need a break from Animal Crossing at this point so thus, instead of simply collecting bells, I'll be collecting demons instead.

Plus, I am so anxiously awaiting my Amazon DLC. "Cardboard box with a smile" coat is amazing.

Nocturne went backwards in some ways compared to earlier games. The battle system was slow, and enemy encounters typically had few enemies for most part. The encounters with more than 5 or 6 enemies had minor framerate hiccups too.

And while I absolutely love Nocturne (probably my favorite RPG), it's not like the 3d models for the demons were all that great. I can understand Nags frustration because it seems like this topic comes up in every SMTIV thread, that or something about Persona.

isn't she just freelancing right now? though is nice to see her doing RPG reviews, she is one of the best IMO
I think so. I'm pretty sure I've seen an article of hers turn on on USGamer recently. Glad she did the review at IGN. I think she's a fantastic reviewer, and that one paragraph salivating over potential demon fusings highlighted one of my favourite aspects of these games.

Wow that sounds cool, sort of like the film 'I heart huckabees'

People still like physical things though

Of course. I'm just saying that because both titles are available digitally, that means some people who just want to play and don't care about physical product can buy digitally. That decreases the demand for the physical product, which hopefully will help prevent prices from getting unreasonable.

Although really, you can still get almost of Atlus' products from the last 10 years for at or below original MSRP. I think people worry more than is necessary about their products. Fire Emblem is a more valid concern, the wii and gamecube ones are ridiculously priced and even shadow dragon is rather pricey by now.

I do find it odd some people seem to care so much about graphics and worry about the 2D enemies, but if I were to make a list of important shit in a RPG, that would certainly not be high up there.

Great review scores though, was already super hyped for it but it's good to know its justified.

But I didn’t care about the human characters, even during the dramatic moments. They just didn’t seem to have much in the way of motivation; rather, they were sort of a traveling peanut gallery, there to comment on all the weirdness around them for the benefit of my silent protagonist.

I was also a little disappointed with the actual exploration, which is hurt by a very basic overhead map in which characters and demons are represented by simple icons. Everything is rendered in shades of grey or brown, so the paths are frequently difficult to distinguish from the buildings, and it’s easy to get lost. It stands in weird contrast to the rest of SMT4, which is normally experienced from a third-person point of view, and features plenty of detailed environments. I wish I could say that it's relatively inconsequential, but I spent a ton of time on that map, and it got old in a hurry.

These two sections of the IGN review have me worried. I would buy the game for its story and lore/world, since I am far from being fond of the battle system in the game, but hearing that the characters are pretty much all bland and uninteresting, that the world doesnt seem to be varied and colorful and that the graphics are unimpressive, sure didnt make me want the game more. :/

Barely. They don't attack or react to being hit, they just kind of float there in a single loop of animation, unless things changed massively since the last trailer I watched.

That's rather disappointing to hear. I saw a video on YouTube and the enemy just appeared to be in a puffing animation and just flashed during its attack. After playing Etrian Odyssey IV I was expecting something like that. I can see this as being a valid complaint actually.

Still excited to play it though,

I remember making fun of this system like a year and a half ago. Now, two of the best games I've played all year have been on it, and this may make 3. My apologies, 3DS.

The thing is that SMT4 has over 400 demons, which is dramatically more enemies than a game like EO4. If SMT were a bigger franchise that were guaranteed to sell, they may have put money into making 3D models for all of them, but they cut their losses and it was probably a good idea.

How sad is it that SMT is still not a guaranteed seller at this point? You'd think that Persona would've raised the franchise's profile enough to make it worthwhile.

Eh, most of the enemies in Persona are palette swaps. The number of Personas far fewer than 400(Persona 4 has 179 persona excluding side character personas).

Nocturne also had an extremely limited demon selection.

Even Persona doesn't sell that much.

Plus most of those 3d models and things were recycled from other PS2 SMT games which made it easier

Persona has raised the interest, but this isn't Persona. There's no guarantee that because someone likes Persona, they'll like SMT. As evidenced by this thread and every other SMT4 thread on this forum.

Is this your first mainline SMT game? The stories in the games are usually good, but they are delivered in a way that's different from what people are used to.

I played Nocturne on PS2 and quite enjoyed it, but in Kat's review for IGN she called the characters flat

Characters in SMT are definitely not presented in an overt fashion. I guess it's not for everyone, but I've always enjoyed how they do it.
