I think it's really amusing how much of a visual mess the OC character designs are. Just... terrible. Fucking horrific. Even Kaguya. Flop flop.

I think anything with a grid map can be viewed as a tactics or strategy game. If I could try and fix the "strategy" part I would:

I like that you thought about this. Kudos Here's what I thought:

-Make maps smaller and slightly decrease movement speed maps are generally pretty small, given movement range
-Give everyone their own Cross Points and maximum XP (to make units less homogenous and prevent hoarding of XP) with regards to XP shared XP discourages hoarding of XP and makes XP items relevant, especially considering skill use and super use. I used to share your view but I came around
-Either increase XP gain or decrease XP cost of skills (to balance individual gains as opposed to mutual)
-Diversify skills (skills are too generic, Range +2, Heal 30% health, First Critical etc.) I guess, they have their moments but once you're playing chapters with all units it does feel same-y, I also worry that there's nothing else they can come up with
-Make successful criticals generate more XP and deal more damage criticals deal more damage, if successful criticals generate more XP it should be super minimal like plus 1 or 2 per attack
-Weaken Special Attacks and subsequently modify Special Attack cost and damage per pair (far too powerful which makes players only spend it on bosses or minibosses) well yeah they are powerful but they come at the cost of 100 XP - lower ability to defend future units/counter attacking units, use healing skills from future units, etc. They are generally about as strong as a full round of Normal Attacks, given the cost I don't feel they're overpowered. Also Special Attack finishes come with EXP bonuses if you kill a unit with it so there's that
-Remove multi-attacks from some units (give some pairs some hardcoded weaknesses to promote group synergy) and change cost and damage of the rest (to balance with individual XP bar) Pretty interesting idea. I think it may be worth having multi-attacks with specific ranges also
-Make solo units add more to the pair (like additional range/attack range, move speed, number of attacks, strength and defense and tech) they come with passive skills and skills with cost, ideally you equip a solo with a unit that has skills they benefit from
-Weaken boss health (they're too tanky and don't pose much of a threat when isolated) I agree with the latter but weakening boss health seems counterintuitive to what you're saying
-Allow sprinting which doubles movement but disables attack interesting idea that I like a lot but can't think of when you'd want to disallow yourself the ability to attack, even the limited turn stages aren't all that restricting IMO
-Add stage hazards definitely
-Add teleporting and mobility skills like momentary flight teleporting perhaps provided a certain range and with only the opportunity to attack as many times as you do when Countering a unit, momentary flight that reduces your movement range but allows you to take less damage if you're attacked, loving it
-Increase support unit damage to 1.5x the damage of a single attack from the pair why not
-Increase basic enemy damage (keep their durability the same, promotes smart positioning to reduce enemy dogpiling) i can get with this
-If a pair falls, they are removed from the current battle (will return in the next battle) definitely
-Moving out of an enemy's/ally's ZOC gives them a free immediate attack (makes positioning more important) sure I guess, but escape ZOC skills should negate this if so else the skill is useless
-Decrease item drop rate most of the time you're getting self-target 10% HP or 10%XP, Panacea Bottles and such, I mean I think they could stand to give you a little less of the stronger items like Party Heals but don't think drop rate is problem. Perhaps they don't need to give you an item if you break shield as it seems to be with plenty of enemies
-Remove the +1 attack for using all attacks in a fight and add in skills/equipment that increases number of attacks/counterattacks. definitely
-Add flanking (+15% damage from the side, +25% from behind) why not
-Damage drop-off from attacking at longer ranges (0% at 1 space, -10% per space after, can be nullified by skills or equipment) in conjunction with the decrease in movement range I can't sign off on this, if one or the other then maybe

Also change the UI so you can easily see enemy attack ranges and add a list of skills available and in effect on the bottom screen when hovering over a unit. I think if you use Free Cursor you can see enemy attack ranges but the skill display would help

I think it's really amusing how much of a visual mess the OC character designs are. Just... terrible. Fucking horrific. Even Kaguya. Flop flop.

I just find them generally unlikeable, from their voices, to their designs, to their personalities, to their attacks. I don't hate them but I would not care if they weren't in this game.

Haken though, I like, and Kaguya I don't mind except for her design.

I love those bottom screen team images. Wish there was a place ta grab nice clean pics of 'em. Should be prime official site material but no luck lookin' on those.

I'm always thankful that my Tedium Resistance stat is high when it comes ta stuff like this! Things are still fun & fresh on my end 30+ hours & chapters in! Feel bad for all ya peeps that're burned out!

I have the official artwork (the stuff they use for those bottom screen team images) but can't find the images themselves.

And I consider myself someone who hates tedious things but haven't gotten sick of PXZ yet. Maybe it's pacing? Maybe I'm biased? Who knows, I generally don't have a problem with grinding in RPG's =P

I love how utterly contrived the cut-in for Sakura during her (and Ogami's) special attack is.

Doesn't feel that contrived, I don't think. Not exciting but this applies probably more to their skill set and I can think of others who aren't super amazing with cut-ins (Ryu and Ken, Chris and Jill) and those that are interesting (Zephyr and Leanne/both of Leanne's cut-ins, Dante and Demitri, Soma, Erica.) the only ones I think that suck are Pai's and Yuri's, but even then I don't find those all that bad.

It is probably pacing. I happened to be on a moderately dull family visit when the game released. I got it and spent a lot of time just banging through the levels without break.

I like Kaguya. I wish she wore more clothes, but this is a JSRPG. What can you do?

Good thoughts, I also thought of the nullify ZoC thing but was worried I'd be taking it too far. However the biggest change I would make is to add in a lot more unique skills to support the other changes, and would ideally differentiate pairs from each other (as well as representing the particular traits of each pair/solo) using the new skills.

I think the reason for the homogeneity of the characters stat-wise is each company doesn't want their characters to be eclipsed by the other companies' characters, so to settle on the power level debate they just spread generic skills to everybody.

No I mean contrived for fanservice. It starts off at her ass, curves up towards her boobs then shows her face. The brazenness is hilarious to me.

Well I agree with the homogeneity problem which makes ranking teams difficult here after the top few. I'm just acknowledging I don't have any ideas on that front as far as differentiating them, it doesn't seem like there's anything else to give.

As for fanservice on Sakura, then I totally agree. Sakura, like Leanne, is one of the girls I think would be hard to sexualize since she's so demure and her outfit is so conservative, and they went with an ass shot =P

I lied. I'm at chapter 34. I fired it up at lunch.

It's a fun, meaningless game. My joy comes in the ridiculousness of the attacks, the great interactions between characters, and the music. The plot doesn't exist.

That, and it's the closest thing to Endless Frontier Exceed I'm ever going to get, so...

I'll probably play some more tonight while I watch some Breaking Bad.

That's pretty much what the game is for me. While some people have pointed out some of the spelling mistakes in the script, I think that's missing the forest for the trees. The sheer amount of references kept intact in the localization is really impressive. The attack names for most of the franchises I'm familiar with seem to follow localization conventions instead of being straight up translations.

And some of the references seem pretty specific to localization quirks for each game. There was a reference to a mistranslation of a Darkstalker character's line, even, which gets lampshaded by Xiamou.

I just finished up chapter 38 and I'm still enjoying it! Loving how every solo unit seems to have unique text with each regular unit. You can even go into training mode to discover different bits of specific dialogue between units.

Is it a GoTY? Definitely not. But I'm really glad this game was localized. The localization was such a longshot. I can only hope that the signs pointing to surprisingly decent(?) sales mean a sequel may be possible in the future. They could probably polish up some of the game's rougher edges in a sequel. This game seems to have improved on Namco x Capcom, after all.

Oh man Stage 35 and now 36 are a pain in the ass. You only have like 6 units each and the stages are huge and it takes forever to get anywhere. So annoying. Stage 35 took me like 20 turns, and the only reason is that it took forever to get around.

Played 2 hours

Yep this game feels like namco x capcom .. but much much faster .. i think it'll get slower at some point , but for now the game seems "better" .

why did the delivery man made me wait so long for this game ?

I am 30 hours into the game and I just realized now that your XP gauge is shared among all characters.

I feel like the dumbest person ever.

Don't feel bad. I didn't realize that when playing the demo numerous times. Someone had to point it out to me.

Got about 8 chapters left. Rather annoying having to re-assign units when your team splits up & then they join back again. At this point, I've tried experimenting to see what works and if the special dialogue is humorous.

I'm now starting to take my time with this game since I'm starting to feel a bit burnt out on it. I just beat Ch.21 and it kinda made me wish they had put G and Rogan in this game. Would've love to seen there reaction at coming back to Curien's mansion and their interactions with Chris and Jill

I didn't even think of this.

Hah. Yeah, that was a missed opportunity for sure.

Would also like to see some more Endless Frontier characters. A Kyon + Henne team or a Aschen + Suzuka team would be fun.

Hear that? I'm talking sequel here, people. Make it happen Capcom! And Namco! And Sega!

On stage 39. So close now. Well, close in stages, probably still got 6+ hours left haha. Current time is 48 hours, so I guess 54+ is what it's gonna be for me.

Finished the game yesterday and I enjoyed all the way through. I just wish there was a little more to the ending. Finished around 60 hours but it would have been much quicker had I started using items earlier. Now on to Etrian Odyssey IV.

Noooo I accidentally used my 1 of a kind heal/cure/full xp item!!!! Did anyone ever mention how bad the 3DS dpad sucks?? Even between lotsa hours with this game an DKCR it still feels so stiff! The tower chapter (36?) woulda been pretty cool if not for having to backtrack to battle baddies. Why'd they make a bunch appear far behind you?? Alternatively they coulda just made it a "defeat named baddies" victory condition instead of the standard wipe 'em all out one.

Ya know they gotta add a big new company with each sequel! What all JP companies with many well rounded and known characters we got left? TecmoKoei? Nintendo? Squeenix?

in before Lightning joins the fray and everyone gets costumes of her and the storys focus is all on her!

Crap, just got my first Game Over. I countered recklessly with an episode-critical unit, which then got ganged up on and KO'ed.

It's pretty funny, this game is so easy that after a few dozen hours in, you start being lazy and eventually make a fatal mistake.

Seraphis Cain

bad gameplay lol
Man. Chapter 16...I realized ONE turn before it would have been too late that Ichiro & Sakura have a skill that gives everyone Range +2. If I'd have found that one one turn later, I'd have been screwed. Really dodged a bullet there, heh.

Also I had no idea what the Range + skills did before this chapter, either. They could have named them better, honestly. Like, Movement + or something.

50 hours and eleven minutes, completed.

Solid game, although the last chapters were like the mother of reinforcements, damn.

I'm in chapter 9 now the game still rocks

NOthing else to add.

Screw the reviews i knew they were bogus .

I honestly loved the game until chapter 25 or 26, I cant remember now, it almost made me lose all the motivation to play it. As I said before, the moment you have no more character to recruit, the game loses almost all its charm. Its a shame. Dont get me wrong though, I still had lots of fun with it.

Boss Doggie

all my loli wolf companions are so moe
Man, New Game+ is a killer. Enemies suddenly having more barriers and you levelling up slower because of less exp is hard...

Nah, levels start over from the bottom and the whole team stays there.

But items and equipment do carry over and the equipment found in NG+ is better.

The late 20s and early 30s are the worst chapters. Actually a lot of large stage chapters are annoying.

Anyway almost done with chapter 40. Will finish the game tomorrow, so just as I wanted, the end of the week.

Did I just witness a freakin'
Dreamcast VMU
being shown in Chapter 35? Man, part of me wants a sequel just to see what other references & cameos they can insert in.

They put everything they could really ...but the first game , they tried to be serious in their plot ...

Finished yesterday at 55 hours. While before finishing it I was ready to beat it, I kind of want more. Would definitely like a sequel.

Hard to pick favorite units because they're all so awesome, but I think my overall favorites were Ichigo/Sakura. Criticals all around with them. Least favorite unit was Kos-Mos/T-Elos, didn't care for their attacks at all.

Definitely a solid 7/10 game, could have been a little shorter but oh well.

Oh and Fetus of God stage was awesome/weird/creepy/crazy.

Having a good time with this. The constant appearence of new characters keeps things fresh. I have my doubts about its ability to hold my interest for 60 hours though, we'll see.

Done!

Just a couple minutes & seconds short of 62 hours. I know it coulda been much shorter had I not missed/misinterpreted the way a buncha mechanics work for a good chunk of the early parts of the game... and not taken the time to jot down all .hack moves/skills/items/monsters & their stats! Anyhow thats some good gameplay for your dollar value right here. The fact that its by far more gameplay then anything else (no cutscenes, minimal dialogue by rpg standards) makes it all the more gamey & good! Fun from start ta crazy ass final chapter end!

Best Team: Kite & BlackRose cause I am biased
Best Solo: Arthur cause peoples reactions to his armor loss never gets old

Worst Team: Yuri & Estelle since cause I flubbed chaining their attacks way more often then not... nevermind going for criticals or cross hits
Worst Solo: Juri since her lifting baddies up outta reach was way annoying when paired with most anyone

But items and equipment do carry over and the equipment found in NG+ is better.
Now I have ta play NG+ to see if theres any new .hack related equipment @_@

Oh and Fetus of God stage was awesome/weird/creepy/crazy.
Ya mean gross right??
