The better question is: is the gaming industry obligated to? If video games want to be expressions of "art", let the people creating the art decide what they want to do and for whom they want to do it.
Most video games are not about expressing art, they are about hitting the target audience as well as possible so they make as much money as possible.
The thing is just that the target audience for big console games is mostly still males age 20-40 or something like that. Mobile market has already shifted a lot more towards women and the console market could follow. People will cry about wokeness and whatever, but it's simply about money.
