Yes they are, most devs nowadays have an agenda. And I suppose it doesn't hurt sales enough to matter, and the focus audiences don't complain enough, so it just keeps happening. Send mail into publishers and developers telling them you are sick of ugly characters, and perhaps even vote with your wallet and maybe it'll change. But as it is now, not enough people complain, and too many people still buy it for it to even change.

I appreciate it when there are also women calling out the bull shit happening in the industry. Women looking beautiful is not only for the benefit of the "male gaze", but the thing is...people like looking at beautiful people, and they like being beautiful. Obviously not every one because we have this section of people who like to...self insert themselves in fiction and games, but as a self proclaimed ugly person, I sure as hell would not want to play a game if the protagonist looked like me. If I could flip a switch and be a much more attractive person I could be, I would. That's why I usually pick female characters in create a character games, because I like looking at something I find more attractive. This is also a good additional point. It's not just that they're making ugly characters in games. They're making ugly women characters specifically. Men are fair game, and it's bull shit.

If I've learned anything from the nutjobs on twitter, it's that we have a big problem where sexism, racism...they're not being combated, they're being promoted and in very specific directions. I had been told specifically by the type o person who support these decisions in games, that you can't be racist or sexist if it's towards a white male. You can't be sexist against the patriarchy, or you can't be racist against the oppressors I was told, with no amount of irony. This is really messed up. My point is, that yeah let's make the women uglier to combat the male gaze, but let's make the men sexier because you can't objectify a man supposedly. That's the mindset going into these decisions.

They used to be artistic renders of how artist used to think hot people look but since Mocap got better and facial scans these ugly peoples are who we see on the day to day basis. I think its a mixture of game engines attempting and failing to look hyper-realistic which results in female models having weird man-like jaws and a result of western devs trying to completely 180 on the "sex appeal" that games had for a long time.

I understand making female characters in gaming less about their appearances and more about their personalities, but I'm going to be honest, that shit completely falls flat in most games too. Aloy is a good example, the Guerilla devs originally had her a bit more prettied up but then they said "she looks like she'd cry if she chipped a nail" (which imo is hilariously hypocritical of them to even say if they were trying not to be stereotypical) so they made her face look inhumanly ugly to the point where its distracting (like she looks like shes intentionally supposed to be ugly as hell). Then they give her a completely uninteresting generic hero personality. Its one of the reasons I dropped the first game after 10 hours, the plot is so goddamn boring lol.

As I see my child's drawing (she was really into Manga - then moved on) - and other young illustrators work at work - I think they see beauty in different aspect than normal folks, or older ones like me - than not being able to draw/model.... so even though it's not all - it does feel like times have changed, at least more rapidly in the West.

If you think most of these game models look like "average" people, I would not want to live in a world with your eyes.
I'm fucking sick and tired of hearing the word "woke", but I really cannot help but think that the devs just intentionally go over-the-top uncanny valley ugly with some of these character models. If you are going to make your character look weird, make it like Frank West and have them at least be a good character that people are going to remember. Most of the designs now are incredibly generic as fuck.

Uglier women make the female game designers feel better about themselves.

On the plus side, guys typically dont care. It can be a fat blob or dorky looking Half Life guy. Where's that image someone made years ago showing the box covers of 30 popular games and it was all the same looking kind of guy. Guys dont care. The better looking and stronger they are the better. It can those quirky Japanese shooter games from the 16 bit era with the muscle bound gay guys (I forget what that series is called).

For women, the stronger and uglier they are the better.
