ITT we rank the Star Wars Movies

Easy, love it or hate it Star Wars is popular. Some people only love the OG trilogy. The prequels have been redeemed to some extent. Disney era has been a mixed bag ending on a low point for some people. So please, rank your Star Wars feature length films. Remember this is YOUR ranking, this is the ranking of what movies YOU prefer. This is not an objective ranking of what movies you think are the "critical best". Ill start:

1. Return of the Jedi
- What can I say. I love Jedi Luke. I love the space battle at the end. I love Luke vs Darth Vader (my favorite light saber battle of all Star Wars). I love the rescue at Jabbas Palace. It drags a bit during the Ewoks parts but not enough to knock it off for me.

2. Empire Strikes Back
- Objectively the best "movie" of the trilogy. Incredible film.

3. Star Wars
- The OG, started it all, some people view it as number one. I can definitely see it but I love Luke and Jedi Luke over whiny Luke takes it for me. Han Solo is a badass in this movie for sure.

4. Revenge of the Sith
- Not a perfect movie by any means but its Lucas, its heavy heavy Star Wars, and it really serves as a nice bridge between Eps 3 and 4. Love the rescue scene of Palpatine in the beginning.

5. Rogue One
- Prequels for films in general can be bad and even worse if they have to go in between existing prequels (we call these Interquels). But this one hit it out of the park. I often hear a lot of people saying the beginning was whack and the ending was cool. I personally loved the beginning and the scenes on Jedah with the Star Destroyer in Atmosphere. They could have easily cut out Bor Gullet and it would have been even better. The last space battle was cool. I love how Space Jimmy Smits made an appearance.

6. The Phantom Menace
- You cant imaging how hyped I was for this movie when it came out. I was deep into the Expanded Universe buying all the books and comics. This movie was good and very Star Wars but a bit too convoluted to make easy sense. So many things could have been done better but it was solid for sure. Fans should read the novel Darth Plageous (not cannon in the Disney era) which serves as a sort of prequel to the movie and really explains and makes everything make more sense.

7. The Force Awakens
- The Disney era definitely started on a high note. The new characters were fresh. The "remake" of A New Hope seemed to work. Lots of small problems but Rey, Finn, Poe and BB8 all seemed like cool characters. Kylo Ren is also a high part of the whole Disney era.

8. The Last Jedi
- I konw some people hate this movie for what they perceive was as insult to the story which came before it. I agree to some extent but I dont want to be some toxic fan either. The movie took risks and tried new things which is fine. Luke being a loser definitely rubbed me the wrong way. he doesnt have to be Superman but they did him a bit dirty IMO. I liked the training scenes and Luke is somewhat redeemed at the end. If they were gonig to kill him anyways I dont understand why he didnt fight Kylo physically but that is nitpicking a bit. I like how they got rid of Snoke in a surprise move. I think the final film would have been set up much better with Kylo as the "final boss" not the Emperor. The casino scenes served no purpose other than to show cool aliens and could have been dropped easily.

9. Solo
- I like Solo. Its a fun movie. Casting another Harrison Ford is a bold move and not sure it paid off. The actor did a fine job but he isn't Harrison Ford that's it. I think Donald Glover did a much better job as Lando. As a fan of the books and comics this felt much more like a book or better a comic to show this heist and stuff. It didn't feel like a feature to me. I also hated how they just couldn't help themselves and had to explain every minute detail of Han Solo's background from the Kessel Run to how he met Chewbacca, how he got the dice how he got the Millennium Falcon, how he got his FUCKING NAME etc etc. That really hurt the movie and really smelled bad like Disney executives getting in the way.

Tie 10. The Rise of Skywalker and Attack of the Clones
- ok I am cheating a bit. Both these movies are terrible. Rise of Skywalker I might give the nod to because it has one of my favorite light saber battles between Rey and Kylo on the water. But this movie isn't good period. Attack of the Clones was also terrible. There were some cool parts like Obi Wan vs Boba Fett on Kamino and the intro scene trying to find Padme's assassin. But there were so many awful scenes like the droid factory. Not to mention it makes the Jedi look terrible they weren't able to figure out this super obvious plan. Like "oh there is an ENTIRE ARMY which I guess is ours to control, sure why not we dont need to check that any further?" the acting is atrocious just look at the sand line as an example. I dont blame the actors but Lucas should have given up directing as he did in the original trilogy.

10. Phantom menace (i kind of liked kid anakin and the whole podracing part, plus the podracing game was great so it makes me like the movie more i guess)
11. Revenge of the Sith (it was nice to see the story come full circle)
12. Attack of the clones (easily the least interesting of the prequel trilogy)

I don't really care about the others

1. The Empire Strikes Back - Compelling, dark, risky, iconic.
1. Star Wars - Changed cinema forever.
3. Revenge of the Sith - Brings together all the elements from the previous prequel films into a cohesive whole. Tragic and intense. Endlessly quotable.
4. Return of the Jedi - One of the coolest climaxes ever and defines Luke Skywalker in storytelling canon, as he surpasses the old Jedi ways and saves the galaxy with unconditional love.
5. The Phantom Menace - A risky change of direction for Star Wars, but expanded the universe and showcased a different time.
6. Attack of the Clones - Padme x Annie x Obi. George took his time building up his characters and their relationships, which pays off later. Great moments like Coruscant and Kamino.
7. Rogue One - A genuine, serious movie in the Star Wars universe that respects the source material and takes care to fit in well.

Unranked. The Force Awakens - Inferior remake of ANH, over-reliant on handwaving and memberberries.
Unranked. Solo: A Star Wars Story - A fun adventure but more akin to expensive fan fiction.
Unranked. The Last Jedi - Ruinous, contemptible ego project that should never have been made.
Unranked. The Rise of Skywalker - Putrid sewer water.

I don't want to rank the rest. These are the good five. For the most part, I still only care about the original trilogy.

1. Empire Strikes Back - Best of the best, by far
2. Return of the Jedi - loved the Emperor, Darth Vader, Luke drama with the space battle as a backdrop. Amazing stuff
3. Star Wars - Saw it in the theaters when I was 7 years old. Amazing memory
4. Rogue One - great movie all around. Ties into the original trilogy perfectly.
5. The Force Awakens - Enjoyed it. Rekindled the original magic in a lot of ways
6. Rise of Skywalker - Decent ending to the last trilogy.
7. Solo - Underrated, imo. I enjoyed the story.
8. The Phantom Menace - Introduced a couple of new compelling characters.....and then killed them
9. Tie between the other two throw away prequels. Poor writing, poor directing, just poor
10. Last Jedi - still want my money back

I was just thinking that the most compelling memory I have about Star Wars was the three years between 1980 and 1983 where every conversation about the movies was centered around "I am your father". Very controversial and no one wanted it to be true. Top-notch storytelling.

  • Pretty standard to have Empire and Jedi at the top. Not a huge surprise.
  • I rank Phantom Menace much higher than most, and do think it's a more entertaining watch than the original Star Wars, just barely. I think Qui Gon is probably the best Jedi in the whole series, and just thought he was a neat character. Obi Wan was cool as well, as was Darth Maul. The movie has lots of flaws but I think it's still neat when you get to see the first prequel, and see the Jedi Order intact, and see them using new powers in the first 10 minutes that Luke doesn't know.
  • A force awakens is better than Rogue One. The cast was great, and it felt like a breath of fresh air after the prequels. Kylo was cool. Even whatever his name is was cool, the Andy Serkis guy. Didn't do much but was at least compelling.
  • Return of the Sith is alright. It is definitely below Force Awakens. Everyone said 7 repaired the damage from the prequels.
  • Rogue One is pretty boring. Has 1 cool Vader scene.
  • Attack of the Clones is one of the worst movies ever made, but still more watchable than 8 and 9.
  • Solo is whatever. It's fine for one viewing.
  • Last Jedi destroyed the series.
  • The worst thing ever made in Star Wars is Rise of the Skywalker. Unwatchable.

6. Revenge of the Sith

I have a few issues with 2-6 (my rankings, not the episode #s) but mostly these films are great to excellent to me. I’m not going to specify more as quite frankly so many years of arguing with others over a bunch of movies about space wizards and intelligent trash cans has worn me out, and ultimately I’ve realized the best way to enjoy Star Wars is to just not bother with certain fans. Disagreement is fine, a two hour “video essay” or a similar length article or forum post designed to “prove objectively” the opposing opinion is wrong is just clown territory.

7. A New Hope

It did date a bit for me. Hammil and Fisher are both far better in their performances in the other films (further evidence Lucas may not be the best at directing actors), I like R2-D2 or C-3PO interacting with the OTHER characters but their interactions with each other just annoy me these days, and the locations are just not as visually interesting as most of the other films to me. Still a great film.

8. Rise of Skywalker

Overall I liked it okay, but man should they have gone with the Duel of the Fates script (except Rey and Poe dating, that’s the most random shit ever, yeah even more random than her kissing Ben though that still sucked). Palpatine feels so shoe horned in. Also, the “Dead Speak!” in the opening crawl is one of the most unintentionally hilarious things I’ve ever seen, that feels like it should be in a Spaceballs sequel opening crawl. Did Elaine from Seinfeld complain none of the prior opening crawls had exclamation marks? The stormtrooper lady was introduced way too late to give a shit about. Hux being the mole was so obvious as we knew barely anything about the other guy, should have had Phasma survive and her be the other suspect. Lando bringing in a huge fleet out of nowhere is a pale imitation of “on your left” from Avengers Endgame. Also, lighting was terrible in the final fight against Palpatine, I could barely see shit.

9. Solo

Main actor was good enough in the role, Donald Glover as Lando was great. Woody Harrelson always rules. But the movie needed a tighter script and better sets. Harrelson’s crew dying meant nothing as we barely knew them. And the planet they were on in the second half was so visually dull. Still, ending with that “Han shot first“ moment was pretty damn satisfying.

10. Attack of the Clones

Look, I really enjoy all the scenes focused on Obi-Wan, okay? Ewan truly nailed the role from this point on, and the mystery of finding out what was going on was engaging. I loved the rainy ocean planet, such a cool looking place, I’m curious if any games and such take you there. Also, less Jar Jar, nice. But yeah, everything focused on Anakin and/or Padme sucks shit, and the romance is sometimes so bad and tone deaf I wonder if Stephanie Meyer was secretly a co-writer. Also, is Yoda jumping around like that goofy as shit? Yes. Do I still love it? Oh hell yeah. It’s a mid movie, but at least it has some sense of adventure and fun to it.

11. The Phantom Menace

So I won’t go into the MANY reasons this is the one SW bad film to me. Like I said, no more overly long essays. But at its core, I want a SW film to give me a sense of adventure. This film failed in that from opening act to end mostly. Having the two leads cut through the opposing army like Swiss cheese while the two enemy leaders piss their pants (“we will not survive this!”) completely destroyed any chance of suspense for me. The bland acting (even Ewan is kinda rough in Ep. 1) only worsens this effect. 4 and 7 both had actors actually capable of showing urgency and concern over their situations which is key to create a sense of adventure. This issue could have been solved with Darth Maul as he generates suspense, but oh, he’s in the film for like five minutes. Also, look, I love playing Episode 1 Racer, but I hate merely watching racing no matter how you spin it, so the entire podracing section just bores me to tears. Not even badly made, I just don’t want it personally.

Also, Jar Jar. Leave the actor alone, but yes the character is just obnoxious. Really all the Gungans, sad they wasted the cool concept of an underwater city on them.

So yeah, the only SW film I can’t go back to. I legit can’t keep my attention to it the whole way through anymore. Even AOTC I can finish no prob.

I cannot rate the Sequel trilogy and Solo.

Bonus TV show ranking

1. Mando S1
2. Boba fett episodes 5 and 6
3. Andor

Again, I cannot rate any others.

  1. Episode IV: ANH (Simple but effective, stands on its own and doesn't rely on the other films.)
  2. Episode VI: RotJ (I like the Ewoks.)
  3. Episode V: TES (It's a good film, but I dislike how the characters are split up and do their own thing.)
  4. Episode I: TPM (This movie has its own identity with all the cool droids, ships etc.)
  5. Episode III RotS (Not great, but it at least resolves the Anakin story. Palpatine is fantastic here.)
  6. Episode II: AotC (Dreadful film. Kenobi and Anakin's friendship should have been established on-screen.)
Anything else is garbage not worth talking about. Epi II is garbage too but I thought I should include it anyway for completion's sake.

S Tier: The Empire Strikes Back
A Tier: A New Hope, Revenge of the Sith, Rogue One
B Tier: Return of the Jedi
C Tier: The Phantom Menace, The Last Jedi
D Tier: The Force Awakens, Solo
F Tier: The Rise of Skywalker, Attack of the Clones

The only amazing movie in the series is Empire; Rogue One probably comes closest to matching it overall, but lacks the incredible highs of Empire. Revenge of the Sith actually matches (and in some cases) exceeds the highs of Empire, but it also has some really low lows like the rest of the prequel trilogy. A New Hope is the original, it's very good, no criticism for it.

Return of the Jedi is a bit mid on average, and good at best. And then everything after that is just...

Phantom Menace and Last Jedi are both movies where I can see they have good ideas, but the movies suck. Force Awakens and Solo are the worst kind of nostalgia pandering. The Rise of Skywalker and Attack of the Clones are a joke.

1. Rise of the Skywalkers -- I love that it took the bold approach of throwing away almost all the setup in the previous two movies in order to bring even more excitement to the Star Wars universe. Bringing back the most beloved character of all, Palps, via a Fortnite cutscene was a masterstroke of genius and a complete coup in solidifying the Ninja generation as die hard Disney Wars fans who'll send the Mouse's stock share price to the moon! Diseny stock flies now? IT FLIES NOW!

2. Han Solo Star Wars Stories -- First of all, it's hard to believe that the guy they cast as Han Solo (whose name I totally remember just choose not to type) in this film didn't originate the role. When you watch the dated crappy movies with that Harrison Ford guy it's like... what were they even thinking but I guess it was the 70s and there just wasn't as much talent... and they were harder to find because you couldn't comb through their Insta. This film made me ponder the very serious issue of Robot Rights in the Star Wars movies, which has always been highly problematic... and it was so brave of them to address it here. It also cleared up glaring continuity problems. We definitely needed to know exactly how the Kessel Run went down. And it never made any sense how in the New Hopes movie how there was this whole rebellion but we never saw the rebellion being founded so I'm super glad the rebellion got founded here by Han Solo.

3. Attack of the Clones!!! -- Everyone who's ever been to the beach has wanted to say if. Fuck sand! It *does* get everywhere. Natalie Portman's sexy outfit getting torn up and even sexier was highly problematic and probably the only thing that kept this masterpiece from being higher up the list.

4. Last Jedi -- Finally knocked Mary Sue Luke off his pedestal to be the disgusting milk-swilling incel we always knew was there on the inside. Finally they put a woman of color(ed hair) in command of the Rebel Fleet to unleash hyperspace Al Qaeda tactics that are totally plausible in universe and certainly never would have been thought of by anyone else in the thousands year history of the Resistance... New Republic... Empire... Old Republic.... etc -- Emperor Snokes completes the greatest villian arc in Star Wars history in this film. Like in the first one it's like whoaaa this dude is really big... and in this one we found out that he was actually normal sized.

5. Force Awakens -- An intriguing reboot that just makes everything better! Rey is the character that Luke always failed to be. Her girlboss journey truly shows that the force is female. Bonus points for Han Solo being a sad loser with no development over the past 40 years. This is what happens when you fail a strong and powerful woman like Leia. You end up sleeping in a race car.

Speaking of Leia it was a stroke of genius to plan the trilogy around how great she is. Just a swell decision. Mark Hammil? Harrison Ford? Can't rely on those losers. Carrie Fisher kept herself strong by downing pills with booze, the kind of Hollywood starlet you can rely on.

6. The Phantom Menaces -- Is there anything more exciting than a trade dispute? I think not. The Gungan stuff was so good it inspired an entire generation of James Cameron to make Avatar 2, which still didn't quite live up to TPM. Darth Maul was kind of a dork but thankfully he was killed and chopped in half and tossed down a giant death star hole. I remember when watching the original Star Warses I was always asking myself "Wait, did Darth Vader happen to build C3P0?" And I'm so glad they answered that question here.

7. The Rogue One -- X-wings? TIE fighters? Walkers? Space battles? Barely any space wizards? What were they thinking?

8. Revenge of the Last Sith -- Not gonna lie I only ever saw this one the one time in the theater, but I don't think it had a single trade dispute and I fell alseep. Only good thing I remember was Vader doin' the robot shuffle and going NOOOOOOOOO! It's like poetry, it rhymes, with Frankenstein.

9. Return of the Last Jedi -- Leia in a metal bikini? Highly problematic. Otherwise just a bunch of boring boring action sequences with some of Star Wars's worst characters. The emperor guy was way too subtle in this one and should have been doing cool flips and shit instead of just being tossed in a hole. I do give this one credit though for having another Death Star.

10. Empire Strikes Back -- What is there even worth talking about here? I think most people agree that this is the worst one. I'm pretty sure they forgot to put in a Death Star. Is this even a Star Wars?

11. New Hope -- What is going on here? Why are the sword fights so slow? Why is Luke all angsty, he has legal guardians? Rey was left all alone to raise herself and this goober is crying about not getting to go the Tosche Station?

Uncle Owen?

edit: tfw you proofread your post a day later and realize you forgot to finish your snoke joke.

It’s really hard for me to watch the prequels now. It seems like time has had the opposite effect on me with them than most people nowadays. Acting, cgi and Dialogue just kills them for me. I feel like I’m watching the twighlight movies. I’ve always loved them and still do but nowadays I find it hard to sit through them. They’re the best for younger kids though.

Star Wars -The universe they were able to deliver in one movie on the first attempt is insane. It has everything that makes Star Wars, Star Wars. And is the only one that works as its own complete story.
Jedi- I'm with the OP on this one., on everything
Empire- It's objectively the best movie, but IMO, it's just not truly awesome without 1 and 3. It doesn't even have a space battle! Still love everything about it, Hoth, walkers, good guys losing, Luke vs. Vader.
Rogue One -Goes to show how strong the OT setting is -this is a cobbled-together, badly paced movie owing to all its last-minute edits and reshoots. And it feels like an essential addition. I wish we could keep getting OT stuff like this forever, but as a one-off, I wish they had ironed it out more to stand with the other 3 a bit better. It could have.
Revenge of the Sith -The least bad prequel still suffers from lots of corny, bad CGI effects of the time. But this is Palpatine's movie.
Phantom Menace -The issues with this movie are staggering, but it has the best lightsaber fight, and Jedi Liam Neeson

II is necessary viewing for story links and eye candy, I don't regret paying for my theater ticket, but there is too much plain bad in the movie to dissect, way too much to sit through on repeat viewings, what a mess. Somehow as bad or worse than TPM, but without that lightsaber fight.

HOWEVER, all Lucas movies are head and shoulders above the Disney ST, at least the worst Lucas movie has an original idea in it. They are the phone game version of your favorite Konami franchise, it doesn't even exist.

7. The Force Awakens

It blows my mind how badly Disney dropped the ball with the Sequel Trilogy.

If you had told me in 2012 that the new ST would end up being worse than the PT I would have laughed in your face......then give you a backhand for the disrespect.

Yet, that's how it turned out. Absolutely fucking trash.

  1. Star Wars (A New Hope): Its not nostalgia that makes this my favorite, as I watched it when I was an older teenager and the new movies had stopped coming out. I just love the practical effects and Luke's journey to become a hero. Same reason I love Zelda games.
  2. Empire Strikes Back
  3. Return of the Jedi
  4. Revenge of the Sith: Ian McDiarmid chewing the scenery is enough to make it worth a watch.
  5. Rouge One
  6. The Force Awakens

I’ll go off the beaten path and list my favorite moments in all of SW..
1. NH - Luke’s Death Star Run
2. ESB - Luke and Vader’s Duel at Cloud City
3. ESB - Luke training with Yoda
4. RotJ - Luke vs Vader/Emperor (Anakin‘s Redemption)
5. RotS- Obi Wan vs Anakin on Mustafar
6. RotS - Anakin vs Count Dooku
7. RO - Darth Vader rampage against the rebels
8. ESB - Empire attacks Rebel Base on Hoth
9. RotJ - Lando and Wedge take out 2nd Death Star
10. TPM - Darth Maul vs Qui-Gon Jinn & Obi Wan

Honorable mention even though it wasn’t a movie…but still bloody well done!

1. empire strikes back
2. return of the jedi
3. star wars

i hope one day we get to see them make episode 1-3 where we get to see the heroic ,kind, just starfighter and jedi anakin skywalker get seduced to the darkside with one tiny flaw in his character in a very othello style tragedy that spans 3 movies. Where the jedi are already a rare and mythical group of knights, the remnants of a long gone ancient order. It would be great if they made those....and of course at the end you would see anakin fight his master and be killed at the hands of obi won as he plummets into a firey pit. Then near the end of the film we would see the emperor choose a new apprentice, a dark clad man named darth vader. Anakins wife would die in childbirth, but her son would be heard but not seen crying as obi won is seen rushing from a doomed ship carrying a large bundle ( larger then one child)...no child is seen.

yea hopefully we get that trilogy someday...there hasnt been a star wars movie since 1983

of course we dont need anything after 6 since the redemption arc is complete.

1. Return of the Jedi
-just a satisfying ending to the classic trilogy

2. Revenge of the Sith
-easily has the best lightsaber fights, great music and some of my favorite characters and set pieces. i do agree its not perfect but its definitely up there as one of my favorites

3. A new Hope
-yeah its really good, probably the best example of how to start a new sci-fi franchise.

4. The Empire Strikes Back
-has some of the best character development and set pieces. Plus a lot of iconic moments like darth vader revealing to luke that he is his father.

5. Rogue one
-the one great disney star wars.

6. Phantom Menace
-i dont care what people say about the pacing, i legitimately enjoyed this moment growing up, as a 90’s kid, it was actually my first star wars movie

7. The Force Awakens
-decent, fun, but clearly a safe retread of ANH

8. Attack of the clones
-this is where i cant say enjoy these movies. AotC was boring until the the ending battles

9. Rise of Skywalker
-just meh. I agree with many others that this was easily one of the worst star wars movies but it had something that TLJ didnt have…NOT focusing 40ish minutes on a pointless casino chase that ends up nowhere

-10. Han solo
-only managed to get through half of this one, bland and boring but par the course

11. The Last Jedi
-character assassination and boring af. I actually fell asleep here and there on this one. The mehest of mehs

Without going into a 5000 word rant what baffles me is the utter lack of vision and continuity regarding the "new" trilogy.

While basically a safe reboot you can feel Abrams' love for the Franchise in the Force Awakens. A lot of fan service. The X wings are dirty 😁

Then Rian Johnson steps in and shits over everything. Imagine sending your child to pedophile daycare.
The disrespect (and hate?) permeates the screen.

Then Abrams tries to mop up the mess but it's too late.

Sad.

Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones have to be bottom of the pile. Jar Jar, fart humour and b-movie acting for Anakin in Menace and B movie acting Anakin with an unintentionally funny script in Clones have to be as bad as it gets no?

Solo is such a forgettable movie it has to be the next rung up.

Last Jedi's casino planet detour and sourpuss Luke are pretty unforgivable as is the Palpatine returns and inexplicable title of Rise. That completes the bottom 5 for me.

1. Return of the Jedi
2. Star Wars
3. Empire Strikes Back
4. Rogue One
5. Force Awakens

Watched the OT 100+ times as a kid. Rogue One and Force Awakens I watched twice. The others I’ve only seen once. Seems a sensible way to rank them

Days like these...

Have a Blessed Day

Don't hold back Boss tell us how you really feel. I completely agree but I could never be as scathing I'm just not good with words.

My favs are the original and Return of the Jedi. Just fun and epic in equal measure.
Revenge of the Sith is cool. That’s enough for me to get third place in my “I’d rewatch this anytime” list.

Empire Strikes Back, I never got why it’s so revered. First part is slow and boring as hell. The rest has ridiculous pacing and the direction and writing of a sitcom, except of course for the father-son duel. But in the end, it’s a good movie.

Rogue One is fine, but the last 30 seconds do tend to obscure everything else in my memory.

Attack of the Clones and Solo are in the “so bad it’s almost good” category. Italian Anakin makes wonders to make the character at least a bit believable vs the complete disaster of the original.

Phantom Menace isn’t terrible, but there’s little reason to rewatch it.

The sequel trilogy looks amazing and that’s where its pros end.
